Refinishing my Stratocaster

  • Huge thanks to Sergei for doing such a masterful job.
Sergei used a heat gun and paint scraper to remove the poly urethane paint.
After that we noticed a maple veneer on the top. we descided to remove it.
After plenty of sanding Sergei used a dark brown/red mahogany colour dye.
last of all Sergei sealed it using a satin finish lacquer of some description.
    I'm thrilled with the results.
    Hope you enjoy.
    Sam

Great job. I love the Lake Placid Blue though. I have an LPB one myself, but it certainly looks great, and I don’t normally like wood finishes or sunburst. This looks stunning though.

On my second guitar strip and refinish.
I watched a load of stuff first before doing it. Got a heat gun, good scraper etc but the paint on both my guitars did not come off as easy as any video shows.
OK, the paint did but the crap underneath has been a beast that has required some long hours sanding back to reveal the wood.
Very satisfying at the end of it though.
I went for wood stain finish on my first and it feels amazing.
All the effort, once you are done and get to play it, really pays off in the satisfaction ranks.
Not to mention, switching out components to make it something it never was and then hearing the difference.
Great hobby, which is why I went in for a second project.

When I spoke to a Fender tech, years ago, he explained to me why they paint alot of guitars in various colours and why they make some in natural wood or in sunburst.... heres the deal so that you know why this was a bad choice for you : the guitar bodies that dont have matching wood lines, or the ones that the joints are visible, they paint them in order to look good. The ones that have nice matched woods or the joints dont show at all, they make them in natural wood colour and the ones that have visible side joints they do them in sunburst.... Fender cannot make them all perfect, nor can any other manufacturer.... the woods will bind as they please, no matter how good the workmanship is... and it is not recommended to make a one piece wood body, for abvious reasons.... also, no matter how matched the woods are, or what colour it is, the tone of the instrument is again, its own.... there you have it.... this guitar was nice and pretty in blue... now its joints are visible and to me thats ugly.... not my preference, but if you like it, so be it.... nice workmanship though... :)

Impressive work with the heat gun. It is worth noting that doing this without ending up with a few burn spots and chips takes some real skill and practice. The color coat is just the beginning too, the sealer they use is crazy thick and durable and can only be sanded off. Also, the smell from the hot poly is horrible and certainly must be toxic. Personal experience with an old cheapo Chinese Squier. lol

+Sam Coulson Is there any way to get the old paint off without heating and scraping it off? Could you just sand it off?

+Lucifer Yes but you'd need an electric sander

+ReaCH97 Well I did it on a Precision bass ( hand sanding .. scraping with sand paper ... ) .... Well I was on holidays ... cause it takes days ... but anyway I don t care ..; I m still proud I did it that way ... I changed the pick guard for a white one and let the body in Natural wood finish with multiple satin Gloss layers ... she looks terrific !! I changed the pickups also for 2 Bartolinis -

      +Laurent Malangin haha nice!
I've got bartolinis for my mim jazz bass.
I am currently going to refinish it in a nice wood stain like maple or teak and put a music man pickup in the bridge area.
also going to put active eq in it when I get more money.

Nothing more boring than natural finish on a guitar, but this is great.
Love the original blue, is the best.

This dark finish looks way better than a natural finish

Manuel Martinez, same for me, and the pieces of wood don't match beautifully at the end... :-( Lake placide blue was nicer..., but everyone his own tastes...

Nah, wood stain is way prettier than some silly blue paint.
