    My top 5 favorite hang on tree stand modifications... Having hunted from the same single tree stand for over ten years and having adopted a mobile hunting style, I've tried several different things to improve my setup. All of the mods shown here don't affect the stand's safety in any way. Below are links to some of the products mentioned in the video:

    I’m new to hunting and it’s fascinating how quickly everything moved to saddle hunting. When I stumbled across an older video and it’s a tree stand, I’m still amazed.

    New to the climber world and put it to use this hunting season. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxlQ7TDIrnnSXXbRgFFaxqwullRJJIuYAs I felt safe while climbing up and down a tree. It did take some time getting used to climbing and descending the tree. Once I figured it out I was comfortable going in climbing a tree knowing I was going to be up a tree quickly and most importantly quite not scaring every deer out of my area. I am 6’2” and 240 lbs, fit and comfort were great. I bow hunt and found no issues hunting from it. It is a little bulky to carry in and out of the woods vs some of the smaller open front climbers but I thought it was worth the bulk/weight due to ease of climbing (using the rail to sit on) and comfort for long sits.

    For the cables you can also use sunglass lanyards cut the ends and slide it over. Lil tough to get started but once started they slide on pretty easy.

    I use a Summitt viper climbing treestand I took an old backpack frame and retro fitted it to the bottom part of the stand this eliminated the summit straps .. I also used the the camo adhesive skin as you did and added a small back pack pouch work's great although in colder weather it does get heavy as I pack in my clothes and dress when I reach my destination. But with the waist belt it feels lighter taking some of the weight off my shoulder straps. I always thought that it's be a good idea for a treestand manufacturer to make an all in one system, it certainly would sell.

    With those stick talons do you find you can leave the sticks attached to the stand while you're climbing and hanging, or do you still hang them from a loop in your belt?

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the hunt, how many sticks I'm packing that day, and how stealthy I need to be. For optimum stealth I hang them from the waist, otherwise for only one or two sticks I often just leave them on the stand.

    I'm torn between the alpha and assault right now. I walk long distances through thick marsh/brush where I hunt so I like the smaller size of the assault. But I also like the idea of the wider platform in the back of the alpha for easier shots behind the tree. I've also heard that the alpha could possibly catch on more brush and things on the way in and out which could result in alerting deer. I need to be as efficient and quiet as possible because I normally hunt close to bedding areas. Not sure if you've had the chance to use an alpha or not but could you give me an opinion on which you think would be the better choice? I've been leaning towards the assault but you get quite a bit more stand with the alpha for only $10 more.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ZombieOnaStick21 I've not used the alpha, but the biggest difference for me would be the extra platform length rather than the extra footing near the base of the tree. If you're a big guy, that extra room can be worth the extra carry weight. The alpha platform will only get caught more if you're going under stuff, because it will stick out over your shoulders more. They have the same width. So I would say if you're a big, tall guy go with the Alpha, otherwise the Assault will do fine. I'm about 6'0 180 and haven't ever desired to have the larger platform of the Alpha.

    • @ZombieOnaStick21
      @ZombieOnaStick21 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      DIY Sportsman I'm 5'6" and 160lbs so the alpha would probably be overkill. The assault seems like it would suit my needs the best. I really appreciate the detailed answer. Keep up the great vids!

      No. Basically I just positioned them about where I wanted and then threaded the webbing around the ribs in the stand just as if it were a frame. And in odd cases where something doesn't quite work, I'll use zip ties to help too

    Ever tried the Eberlestock X2? Seeing that your already latching another pack onto your stand, why not just have one pack that can do everything at once?

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not tried it. But since the pack would be on the bottom of the platform, you'd be limited with what you could carry in it, and it would create a larger "block" profile when hanging from the tree. The way the hip belt is set up current is not really a quick release.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      But if you were able to lash the stand to the pack, and then easily remove it once set up, that would likely work alright.

    • @bbrilmyer
      @bbrilmyer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DIY Sportsman yea that's its only drawback. Once you are at your tree, there is some disassembling involved. Pack comes off, stand and sticks come off, pack goes back one, stand goes on over pack, sticks go on somewhere handy. Pack gets hung on tree like a traditional setup when you are ready. But as far as storage capability, transport, and adaptability... I don't think it can be best.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ben Brilmyer What I've been doing with my gear pack is to bungee it onto the stand with the sticks, then either clip it onto my rock harness as I climb or leave it on the ground and pull it up with a rope & hook and hang it in the tree. The downside is a little added weight and leaving the profile of the hip belt hanging on the platform while setup, but logistically it makes setup really easy.

    • @JamesDavis-ek5sq
      @JamesDavis-ek5sq 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may seem overly simple, but I'd love to know more about how you manage attaching a pack to the back of your stand. I use a Lone Wolf Assault II stand and with 3-4 climbing sticks attached (just added Talons--thanks!) I ended up adding fastex buckles (replacing the sliding buckles using the Sea to Summit repair buckles www.seatosummit.com/product/?item=Field+Repair+Buckle&o1=0&o2=0&o3=241) to the shoulder straps of my pack so I could use the shoulder straps to attach to the stand. Maybe I overthought that--sure is complicated when setting up and taking down my stand with cold hands. What's your method?

    Two question.How hot does it get where you hunt?what step by step met it do you do for early season hunts. To keep you dry? I am from SC, it is hot down here.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Danny Browning Sometimes it gets 80/85 degrees. I don't like to go when it gets too hot, because the deer don't move much up here and getting the meat out is a race against the clock. But I do my setup just like normal. The key is to wear lightweight, moisture wicking clothes and taking your time. If it's hot enough you'll sweat no matter what though. Depending on the hunt, I'll either bring multiple sticks and set-up like this: th-cam.com/video/z-fQeTZ_kpM/w-d-xo.html Or I'll set up like this: th-cam.com/video/7TlGkTd82eM/w-d-xo.html The second can be better for really long walks because the walking weight is less. You just need to go slower in the actual climbing portion.
