Thank you. This method worked perfectly and I have been able to successfully remove and clean out two radiators having never tried before. The radiators heat up perfectly now all the sludge inside has gone and we have a cosy warm house again! 🙂👍👍
Thank you so much! You've taught us ANOTHER excellent skill - thanks to you we've completely re-plumbed our bathroom and made it a wetroom! Thank you and God Bless you xx
Thanks! Since I’m not putting radiator back. Do I need to put some caps on the exposed pipes? Or will the central heating be ok with the pipe valves just left closed?
TRVs can be a pain in the arse if they don't shut off! I picked up some valve clamps the other day to stop the drips. Don't forget if the rad has been balanced correctly you need to make a note of the number of turns on the lock shield so when you turn it back in the rad will work at the correct temp.
If there is some play in the pipes, it is possible to lay some blocks down to support the radiator down on its face, undo the fittings slightly, lift he radiator off the wall and lay it on the blocks and tighten the fittings without emptying the radiator. I have seen this done but it does seem a little risky as if it goes wrong, you could end up draining the whole system.
Hi mate i am going disable one of the radiator . what would be the best option to keep it as locked or connenct the each end o the connectors tother so the water flows ?
Thank you for this!! So helpful. How long could we leave it like this? We need to remove our radiator to remove old linoleum, put down new tile, and paint the wall behind, so we’ll probably need at least a couple days. If it’s not too cold, could we leave this for a few days?
I've seen a method where you close both ends, let the pressure off through the bleed valve and close, then just SLIGHTLY slacken off both ends. Then lift the rad off the bracket and tilt forward, giving you enough room to work behind. All depends on how much give is in the pipes, and your way can be used to allow flushing a cold spot rad too!
No need to bother waiting around for it to drain all the way out, just pop your fingers over both ends and flip it upside down, it can be off in 30 seconds that way. PP knows that's the plumbers trick haha!
This looks great - seems you guys over the pond use radiators still while most of our radiators here in the states are 50-100 yrs old. I have one of those - do you think the principals are the same? I have one of the old cast iron jobs from 1920 in my bedroom and I can't reach behind to 1) remove wallpaper and 2) paint... though I am looking at that "small thin roller" comment squinty-eyed.
Good stuff. Gave me the confidence to remove mine in new house. Annoyingly though the connection was on the bottom of the rads rather than the side which did make it more difficult.
I’ve got a vertical column radiator. I’ve shut off the TRV and lockshield values. I’ve checked the radiator isn’t getting hot but when I open the bleed value the water doesn’t stop. I’ve filled about 2 buckets. What could be causing this?
Thank you so much I have just removed my bathroom radiator Di I can remove the tiles behind - so chuffed. No more waiting for the plumber. Thanks so much 👍👍
Love your videos James, you've saved me a packet. Feeling well proud that this went off without a hitch today (5'4 lone female, rad c.250cm long). Desludged the radiator, barely spilled a drop, and it's now sitting neatly across two guitar stands. I can also vouch for using a flexible Tupperware container for drainage, as you can wedge it in/up under the valves. Thanks again (and of course I'm a subscriber!). :)
Hiya James, back again. Window now replaced so time to get the rad back on. It's all gone smoothly including the combi top-up, and I've just turned the heating on to test it. However now the rad's all full of hot water I find one of the valves (the temp control end) has a tiny leak going on. Tightened the nut obviously, but I can see old plumber's tape under there and of course now I wish I'd popped some on (it was the most difficult end to connect as well). Is there anything I can do about this, short of taking the whole thing apart again? This is all behind my office desk and I feel like I can't deal with any more black sludge...
I have old rads I want to remove from an old semi I just bought. The rads have square dimples, kind of like waffles, and I'm told the pipes are gunmetal. The oil-fired system hasn't been turned on in about 10 years.
day 5 of the quarantine and I'm spannering off my radiator to try n build a foldaway bed and paint the whole wall with oranges without my parents finding out.
doesnt work for my radiator which I need to remove from wall to plaster a massive crack as part of a DIY project on 1904 build property. Bleed left for 10 minutes and water still streaming out. Therefore tightened up again, returned shutoff to correct position - noted 1/2 turn was all it took? and re-pressurised system. Has anyone got any ideas to get rad off??
Thanks James. Loving all the videos. I noticed that you didn't put any joint compound on the joints when reconnecting, whereas a couple of other Remove-rad-for-decorating videos do advise to clean off old and the old compound and refresh?
Also pertinent to note for a TRV simply turning it to 0 doesn't mean it's off. Most have a frost setting so always use a decorators Cap otherwise it will keep dripping when the temp drops. Good video 👍🏻
Hi, I enjoy your videos... You intimate this issue I have... I'm trying to replace tall column rads on my system. Closed trv and closed the lock shield. Undone the bleed screw and there's a lot of pressure/water. Why is this? Is the trv not holding? I guess I need to drain the system? Thanks!!
If water doesn't stop coming out from the bleed valve, does that mean the lock valves aren't holding? Wouldn't that mean the radiator would always be warm? Clueless here, trying to paint behind a radiator.
hi I would like to add and removed radiators in my house. need I inform about this building regulation authority if I will do everythink myself and i am not certifi plumber?
Do I have to worry about the fact that there is no water inside the radiator prior to putting it back on the wall? I have Thatchen Radiators, is it possible to remove them from the wall?
No worries. You do then have to top up the system with more water though otherwise your pressure will be too low. This is usually via a filling loop. Question I have though is do you bleed all the rads then or just the one you have filled if anyone knows? 😁
Dammit! I wish I'd seen this months ago when decorating! I thought I had to empty the whole system when removing a radiator so just left it. Ah well, noted for next time! Thanks PP!
I need to remove a radiator for a plastering job, the radiator will be off for a few weeks as all the plaster needs to come off. can I just leave the radiator off like that or do I need to do anything additional with it being left off. I have a pressurised combi boiler. Thanks
If they're small rads like this one I aways keep the bleed valve closed and flip the rad upside down with my thumbs over the holes. If you have play like you said.
Hello, To make this job a LOT easier, and cleaner, go to ABD Tools website and look at Radclamps, plus other tools to help, no draining of rad when removing it.
rollerblading geek dude, I’ve helped 20million people do plumbing tasks and I’m proud of that. With you I unfortunately failed. Sometimes the job should be done by a pro and that’s fine. Just don’t jump on someone’s back when all they want to do is help people.
I tried this with my electric radiator and after some improvisation I'm still waiting for the electricity to drip out of the cable into the bucket. AMIDOINITRITE?
I followed this and now I have no pressure on my boiler. I'm not blaming you! I thought your video was excellent - I have obviously not done something wrong, please can you help me put it right?!

Thanks for your video. Really clear. I watch this every time I need a reminder.
This guy is awesome, clear instructions and clearly knowledgeable. I usually use his videos for guidance (I’m a diy’er)!
Spot on. Builder wanted £150 to remove my radiator. Watched this video then did it myself.👍👍👍
Excellent video. Easy to follow, well explained. I am redecorating my house and have removed 3 radiators so far with this method.
Studying level 2 Plumbing and these are really helpful, noice one!
Thank you. This method worked perfectly and I have been able to successfully remove and clean out two radiators having never tried before. The radiators heat up perfectly now all the sludge inside has gone and we have a cosy warm house again! 🙂👍👍
Five years on and still helpful. Thanks. I watch your video and think you are hilarious. Good luck with everything
Thank you so much! You've taught us ANOTHER excellent skill - thanks to you we've completely re-plumbed our bathroom and made it a wetroom! Thank you and God Bless you xx
Thanks Kaela! 👍
Hi James, have you installed or used radiators that drop/pivot down from the wall for decorating or removing with no draining at all?
Just used this guide to remove a radiator in my first house. Much, much easier than I expected it to be, so thank you for the great instructions!
Thanks! Since I’m not putting radiator back. Do I need to put some caps on the exposed pipes? Or will the central heating be ok with the pipe valves just left closed?
Good instructional video. I’m attempting this tomorrow for the first time. Hope all goes well.
I hope it went ok! If you get a sec join the *LIVE STREAM TONIGHT at 6:30pm* - *_Open to all_* Bang the🔔too! th-cam.com/video/TRJJjTkdENw/w-d-xo.html

How do you then refill it after you put back on?
Do we ever use plumbers tape on the threads?
Another quality DIY video, thanks for being there!

You're a BOSS - just followed your vid and got the rad off in my Son's room ready to decorate! 👊
Good stuff. Gave me the confidence to remove mine in new house. Annoyingly though the connection was on the bottom of the rads rather than the side which did make it more difficult.
How much water would you expect to get out of bleed valve after isolating Trv & valve?
So you don’t need to refill with water afterwards?

Hello, is it necessary for exposed copper pipes to have an earth wire connected?
heyu . please cam you tell me why you haven't used any sealer ptfe or putty etc when refitted the rad, at both the valves??

Extremely useful video ..... thanks.
So helpful, thank you, thank you. Liked and subscribed
@plumberparts do i need any brass stop ends once i remove the radiator for say a week?
Thankyou so much for making these videos, So helpful! Keep up the good work👍
Top video, very informative. Thanks
Did this yesterday so my mate could plaster a wall. Went smooth as butter :]
day 5 of the quarantine and I'm spannering off my radiator to try n build a foldaway bed and paint the whole wall with oranges without my parents finding out.
HAHJSAJAJAJJA
Rad off and not too much spillage. Cheers mate 👍👍👍
How do I put the water back in the system 😅
I want to know your thoughts about primeatic single pipe systems as I have done a job on 1 this year and was struggling with filling it back up.

Has anyone got any ideas to get rad off??
Lots of these vids on TH-cam,,, but this one told me all I needed to know!
Do I need to turn off the water supply first?
could this be used to permanently take out a rad?
Is this a method that would work, if I want to permanent remove the radiator?
Do you have a video of removing a radiator and replacing with a towel radiator by any chance
Thanks James. Loving all the videos. I noticed that you didn't put any joint compound on the joints when reconnecting, whereas a couple of other Remove-rad-for-decorating videos do advise to clean off old and the old compound and refresh?
Recently discovered that a Quality Street tub fits nicely around the pipes for draining down a radiator
What about the thumb of a rubber glove and a jubilee clip or zip tie, cheap version of radkit pro.

+Seb Ski Shouoldn't need to unless it's pressurised.
heil to the plumber king , can you show us how to go from copper pipes to flexibel radiator tubes?
It's not really the done thing mate! Copper all the way if visible.
working class version of Shmee !
So you don't need to purchase one of those radiator removal kits then, I didn't know that. Thank you for the advice.
Do I have to worry about the fact that there is no water inside the radiator prior to putting it back on the wall? I have Thatchen Radiators, is it possible to remove them from the wall?
Donna Brooks when you reconnect the pipes and open the valves the radiator fills with water again.
Thanks Jack!

I realize your comment is years old, but I have the same question and was wondering if you ever found out. Thanks.
Excellent! Thanks!
Good info for diy tips
+ragnor56 No worries!
The one I'm on hooking his cast iron they are heavy and sit on the floor besides that that guy just lifted would probably be about 400 lbs
My valves on the radiator are shut off but the radiator is still leaking after days - what does that mean?
There's a tiny hole where the water is coming out. 👍🏻
Why not Bacho Grips?
hucks33 Because lots of builders and plumbers merchants had those grips on offer at christmas ;)
If they're small rads like this one I aways keep the bleed valve closed and flip the rad upside down with my thumbs over the holes. If you have play like you said.
+Mike Tinsley Top stuff!

Bloody good video. Thanks
wouldn't it make MORE sense to just have a cap for either side?
That's a school radiator! Haha. Love it.
Hold tight in 2021!
Haha! Thanks man!
0:40 so your instructions for people whose radiator pipes can't move are are "make sure they can move" err.. right. thanks for that
Sorry mate, I'm not god and can't guarantee they can move....it's just a hard job sometimes.
lol so your instructions on how to move them are "I'm not god" and "it's just a hard job sometimes".. err ok.

plumberparts but don't call me dude. Please address me as sir.
You really do have the painters in.
Top video :)
Righty tighty lefty loosey
clever people would use a mini roller and a long arm handle !
Released the air, continued to release water? Now what do I do?🙋🏼♂️
Footprints are far handier and better than grips for supporting the valve! They are the way forward!
I would've thought there was a blanking off piece you could screw in the radiator straight away.
Thanks. BTW you look like a sports caster or athlete.. I just cant put my finger on who..
thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Remember bruv.......hold tight
