I was born in 1989 and growing up I always thought the epitome of cool were people like Peter Cushing, David Niven, Christopher Lee, George Sanders, Roger Moore etc, the gentleman actor. Easy, charming, amusing, self-deprecating, the quintessential British gent, seldom seen today ofcouse but I still think they're much cooler and so much more admirable than any of the alternatives my generation was graced with!

All fantastic characters. Have all of their biographies on my shelf; George Sanders is rare but worth hunting down. My great auntie was given a lift by David Niven back when she lived in France - exactly as youd expect him to be she said.

I was watching an interview with Scottish actor Stephen McCole and he was saying even as recently as the 90's when he trained you always had to do singing and dancing as part of your acting classes, so I think that was always something people learned, although I'm not sure if that's the case now, these days folk just need to look good and that's it, they're officially now an actor, which is a shame as the quality dips, although there are still some extremely good actors kicking about

He never received a Knighthood, which he definitely deserved for his charity work & for his contribution to the acting profession, over meny years. But he was loved by his fans world wide. So Peter may God's Grace & Blessings be with you in heaven with your beloved wife Helen Always.

Here's the thing, comedy is usually written for the age. Morecombe & Wise were always the must watch Christmas special on TV when I was growing up. The comedy was simple but effective. Of course you knew what Eric Morecombe would do in most situations and Ernie Wise' reaction to it. The anticipation following Eric's look into the camera, at you, was always humorous. Today, the comics have to rely on semi to offensive humour to get a laugh from the audience. Just what have we lost? An age of innocence?

@@Yuurei21 He was given his OBE. We have only yesterday posted a reminder feature about this on the PCASUK facebook page and website too. I guess it's a mystery why he was never awarded a knighthood. After his retirement he was beginning to have the time to do more charity work, which is one of the 'important' features that the awards commission looks for. It was at this time that Peter became ill and was fighting cancer. He managed to live another 15 years, without medications or chemotherapy. It is usually I believe a process, of being awarded an OBE that starts the path to a Knighthood.... Peter just ran out of time. As Christopher Lee said at the time, 'It was too little, too late'. Peter was a very humble man, and maybe others had suggested his awards and acknowledgements and Peter was approached... he may have declined! It wouldn't be the first, maybe he thought the OBE was enough . . difficult to tell. No question - why do knighthoods come too late or not at all? Sir Christopher Lee was knighted in 2009 at age 87 - he died 6 years later aged 93. He and Peter Cushing deserved knighthoods in their sixties, after they had more than proved themselves worthy. They would then have had some years ahead of them to enjoy the honour!
June Whitfield was made a Dame in 2017, aged 92 - she died the following year! Her career was long and consistently impressive, again why was she not honoured with the highest award 20 years earlier?
Peter Cushing is not alone in missing out on the Queen's top accolade - the list of distinguished entertainers who deserved to be called Sir or Dame is long - Morecambe and Wise, Ronnie Barker, Les Dawson, Beryl Reid, Joyce Grenfell, Victoria Wood - I could go on.

They remind me of Wayne & Shuster, a Canadian comedy act who did stage , radio and tv from 1941-1990. Ed Sullivan loved them and they appeared on his Sunday night show more than any other act.

I thought i'd mention that this song is written by Irving Berlin. A Russian Jewish immigrant who migrated to New York's East side from his home town in Russia, in 1888. His real name was Israel Isadore Baline.....

Oh I know it very well :) When it was remastered and released, as a non region on blu ray a few years ago, the distributor was very generous and gave us a dozen copies to give away as prizes. A very popular film, maybe one of the very first slasher movies... so a quite different concept and role for Peter Cushing. Happy to hear you enjoyed it too! - Marcus (pcas)
