It's 10.12 pm. I'm working on my website to showcase my writing and my artwork. I was uploading paintings that I did during the worst years of my life, that occurred in the time frame of me being abused, me running away, and me becoming homeless. This poem came up. The imagery struck me so hard that I'm crying and laughing. Spending nights walking through the town in a dress but I had no home. I broke into shops and ate the garbage of a McDonald's. It's a year, February is actually the month I reported to the police and spent two weeks in a hospital while welfare had to figure out what to do with me. It's all coming back. This felt like a sign. This felt like it was for me. Thank you.
Today I got a close look at what a 50 year old marriage looks like. I helped my parents refinish the wood floors and counters in their kitchen, a huge job for anyone, but especially for two people in their 70s who care deeply about beautiful things. It’s a process fraught with decisions and constant compromise. Tonight my dad and I ate a steak dinner (courtesy of a neighbor) on the bathroom floor because everywhere else smelled like turpentine while mom sobbed unconsolably in the other room over a devastating mistake she has made. Halfway through his dinner a solution occurred to my dad and he went to test it. Once he saw that the fix would probably work he showed it to my mom. It was quiet support. It was love in difficult times. It was the reason why a marriage works.
There is a quote the spirit of which I recall: that mature love knows depths that young love cannot dream of, or something to that effect. A leader in my church said it a few years and this reminded me of it. Mature love remembers the details and the big picture. I love that your dad recognized your mom's need to feel her distress, and when he could, he sought to help her mend it. The way you describe it, small and great, simple and tender, brings tears to my eyes and hope to my heart.
I really like the editing of these videos. It's so pleasant to read the words and then have that zoom out back to the whole page. I love it. My respect for the editors
A Taco Bell commercial disguised as a comment: this reminds me of my first year of college. Taco Bell came out with the 7-layer burrito. I met a girl and we were inseparable. We were also flat broke. We usually ate rice or ramen, and had no car. We decided it was worth it once to walk in the cold to Taco Bell and just get 7-layer burritos as a treat.
I think about this from time to time. I love how dastardly the title is. That's not exactly the word. I love how the title has such an effect on how the poem is interpreted. As an artist/writer and a business major, I think about communication and influence and marketing a lot. The concept of this being just a commercial makes me think about how advertisers try very hard to invoke emotions and tie those strong, sincere feelings to their product/brand. The idea of relating mountain dew to this enduring, hopeful, domestic love is funny to me. It's also sad, how our humanity is leveraged in the attempt to make a consumer good more appealing. Then my brain spins off into, "is marketing art? can it be art? what designates a marketing tactic as cruel, or disingenuous, or deceitful?" yadda yadda. Does anyone else think about these aspect? In the comments, I mostly see people responding to the "love poem" content, not the "mountain dew commercial" concept. Interesting.
I haven’t connected with a lot of poems that have been on here because they were too “poetic”... I know... but this is the kind of poem I love and makes me want to read the rest of this persons work.
That’s totally fine! Everyone has a different taste is poems, my friend loves poems that you have to read 10 times to understand and I love poems that immediately touch me, so don’t worry about liking all poems
This poem is a complete winner for me....in my opinion no other poem on this channel matches the beauty, simplicity and portrayal of love as this poem does. I have watched this video numerous times and this poem ensures to bring a smile on my face every single time, I'm grateful to John Green for the novels he has written for the character he has given us but also for making us aware if the gem that this poem is...
Damn. That moved me, and surprised me in doing so. I shouldn't have been supersized, awesome things come in unsuspecting places. and I should know by now to trust John and the awesome people around him. thank you Ours Poetica.
i'm working through a complicated breakup. the poem finished, i said "awww" completely normally, and then started bawling my eyes out. i needed that cry, so thank you.
I think John has mentioned that if you don't like poems, someday, there might just be a poem that will make you yell at the end of it because you finally understand why poetry is so amazing. I can't believe that was this poem for me.
Wow. Every single line of this poem hit me in a different way. If I could see it on paper, I'd probably underline and circle and star it as described within. And I didn't think much of it at first - but now I love it.
Thanks for the thumb up! Just to offer a bit more context, I assigned each room's boxes a colored sticker, then wrote the exact contents on the inside flap. Once we were unpacked, the boxes were broken down and divvied up. Half were posted on Craigslist for free (and picked up same day), and the other half was stored to be repurposed as needed. I dunno...I don't feel like a monster ☺
I’m always so grateful to wake up to these videos. This one puts my head in a very good place to start this day. I feel so many little personal connections to this poem it feels like it could be describing a thousand different times in my life. I really appreciate this, y’all. Thank you.
How is a poem with that name so beautiful? It’s like they did it on purpose to trick me! The art of war! Break into the heart by offering appeasement there.
You can just feel these words come from a real relationship still in progress and not some idealized look at a past one. And swans are so forking overrated.
I like how some of these reasons aren’t really logical or explainable, and kind of boil down to “because you’re you.”
It's so beautiful.
Love, one often finds, is a state that isn't logical or defineable
I think that's the point of it.
EXACTLY
I saw John Green and I clicked automatically. I love listening to John read. There is something really soothing about his cadence.
Same, I could listen to John read different grocery lists for four hours and find it comforting.
Should we just have a channel where I make John read a poem every day? - Paige
@@ourspoetica Yes!
@@ourspoetica I would subscribe immediately if you could make that happen
@@ourspoetica Yes, please!
I never thought I'd find a poem with Mountain Dew in the title so romantic.
I’m not crying, You’re crying!😭
Guilty.
@@untappedinkwell No you're crying! 😭
I really am :(
Never thought I'd cry over a mountain dew commercial, but that's a powerful love poem
This is perhaps the best poem to give to John to read, ever.
I always think I’m not a poetry person, and then my heart has to go and make a liar of me
Haha, your heart's a poetry nerd! - Paige

A fellow survivor of abuse and hard times sending out love to you. Thank you for your post. You've turned your pain and healing into poetry.

And best, he knew to leave her to it, but even in doing so spent his time eating dinner thinking of how to help. Effortlessly. Absolutely adorable.

When that Frido Khalo cookbook line came up I was like "Wait, did John actually ghostwrite this?"
Same.
Same 😂
I got a mountain dew ad that was not disguised as a love poem right before this video!!
John has the ability of making me love everything he shows love to.
This poem was so beautiful that I wanted it to go on for another five minutes at least.
I think about this from time to time.

VERY CLEAR difference between your usual John Green, and your John Green reading a poem for Valentine's Day 😂💖
This made me cry and I hope to find a love like this one day

I keep coming back to this video. It’s perfect

I know that the channel doesn’t really take requests, but I love Mary Oliver and would love to hear some of her poems read
i'm working through a complicated breakup. the poem finished, i said "awww" completely normally, and then started bawling my eyes out. i needed that cry, so thank you.
thank you, John, for reading, and Paige, for choosing this poem and introducing it to me :)
why am i crying this is beautiful
Have loved this poem for a long time. Gave a copy of it to my dad and he still keeps it framed in his room.
Why am i so drawn to poems with soda in them... Having A Coke With You and now this

Hey Love, this made me think of you, so I cried. I miss you and love you. c

Oh, that last part really got me.
I could never love the kind of monster who writes the contents of moving boxes INSIDE the box.
Not even inside the flap?

That last line is true love.
This is the best love poem ever. Brought me to tears. :3
YES MORE JOHN GREEN!
Wait I thought this was a parody of love poems but everyone in the comments is talking about how sincere and emotional it is... am I jaded?
I’m always so grateful to wake up to these videos. This one puts my head in a very good place to start this day.

I always come back to this video and this poem. So amazing.
I listen to this poem every day. Every. Single. Day.
Thank you.
Damn. Never thought I'd cry over a sentence that also had the words Mountain Dew in it
How is a poem with that name so beautiful?
It’s like they did it on purpose to trick me! The art of war! Break into the heart by offering appeasement there.
Dang, some copywriter at mountain dew or their ad agency better be proud of that work.
what a wonderful poem. what a wonderful poet.
I wish there was an extended cut of this channel where they talk about the poem like john did on DH&J
Beautiful
I know that sounds weird, but John has beautiful hands.
"No, he has kind of amazing hands" - Hazel Grace
And now people are writing erotica in the TH-cam comments.
Uriel238 😹 I just remembered the quote and couldn’t resist
@@Uriel238 Ours Erotica
I thought this was a weird comment so I went back and checked and youore actually right asdfghjkl
this is the most John green thing ever
The part about the Rilke essay is one of my favorite things I’ve heard, loved this!
I’ve never related to a poem more
You can just feel these words come from a real relationship still in progress and not some idealized look at a past one.
And swans are so forking overrated.
Man. I'm so vibing. Like how did Mathew Olzmann read my mail. Wow. On the real it's a fantastic piece of poetry. Im biased though. Mountain Dew yes.
That's genuinely incredibly beautiful
This was very good. Thank you for introducing me to it.
Oh God violent tears! I wasn't ready! 😭😂
I come here for comfort 😌
We need more John Green
I enjoy your voice reading poetry, John. It’s lovely.

This is really good! ✨❤️
So good.
This is probably my new favourite poem
Damn that was beautiful... Didn't see it coming

If I ever teach characterization in poems, I'm using this one. So good!
Damn. This is my favorite so far. By far.
Oh wow cool I’m crying
I love this so much.
What a sweet ending
By Gods that almost made me cry!
I don't know why this made me cry. But it did.
YES!
My heart...
Oh, gosh! Filmable indeed!
Can I ask for more John Green reading poems please?
Dang. Was not expecting that based on the poem title.
Omg *weeping*
Thank you so much for this channel.

I coudnt have never thought that a 2:45 minute video, could describe love in its enterity
Love this

Wow...

Fuck! I don’t even like poetry, but that was something. That was really moving. Thanks, John.
