Also known as a Jew Harp I guess somebody decided that name could be racist or something. Adam Rupp is the best best boxer only uses his voice. No equipment but microphones, no looper. Look up his drum solo online.

Chance (baritone/bass) is making the sound of a jaw harp. Adam is considered the best beatboxer (sound machine) and can make all kinds of sounds. He can sing but prefers to beatbox. First singer Austin is high tenor and second singer Rob is lower tenor. Bass singer is Tim who has busted sound systems going so low. They are a country group but sing all kinds of music originals and covers. Austin and Rob even sung a opera song together (it is on youtube, Nessum Dorma). Be careful as Home Free is an addiction and we fans are known as Home Fries.

    • @janhankins911

Highly recommend "Nessun Dorma" (if you aren't into opera and you don't recognize the title, you'll recognize the aria when you hear it). You won't believe what comes out of Rob's mouth. Rob is the lower tenor. I also highly recommend "When a Man Loves a Woman" which features Austin (the high tenor)--it's incredible.

They do use a looper on stage for certain songs during their performances. Adam Rupp is the beatboxer and cofounder of the group with his brother Chris who left the band in 2016. They started the group in college back in 2000. They won the 4th season of the Sing Off in 2013 and since then they have a world wide audience with multiple albums and are known as the only country A cappella band in existence, although they have done all genres. They have around 200 music videos with over 500 million views on line. They are known to have the richest harmonies on the planet and every single video they have done is perfection, not one bad video ever with these guys. Their live shows are like a party as much as a concert, and the bass singer, Tim Foust will make your whole body vibrate in your chair when he goes down to a very deep G2. Their fans are called Home Fries and if you review more of their portfolio of work, you will become a Home Fry too!

This song blew me away when I first heard it & I was completely hooked. These guys are all so talented. They lean towards country but they can do any genre. They all can take the lead depending on whos voice is best for the song. They are known for their tight harmonies. Tim Foust is one of the best bass singers out there (5 octave range) & their beatboxer vocal percussionist Adam Rupp can simulate any sound such as drums, harmonica etc.
Some of my favorites are "Take Me Home Country Roads", "In The Blood", "Blue Ain't Your Color", "How Great Thou Art", "Elvira", "Hillbilly Bone", "American Pie", "Brother In Arms", "One Man Band", "Listen To The Music", "Sea Shanty Medley", "Skull & Bones" etc.

This group is amazing! It's a great rabbit hole to go down.
They do use a loop machine in concert. The beat boxer Adam uses it to add multiple layers. For example, in this song Chance's "Digery Do" was looped so he could also sing harmonies. Adam layered his "Harmonica" on top of his drum beats. He is an unbelievable beat boxer and can sing too! To round out the group, Austin was the first tenor, Rob was the second tenor, and the bass is Tim Foust. He has a 5 octave range and can sing up in tenor territory..

Yes, welcome to Home Free, all acapella, no instruments at all. Masters of all musical genres. They won the 4th season of the Sing Off in 2013. Their covers are upgrades, their medleys are brilliant, their collaborations with the original artists are inspirational, and their original songs are masterpieces. Within this 5 man vocal band you have 5 tenors, 5 beat boxers, and 2 bass-baritones. All of them can sing lead and they choose depending on whose voice best fits the song. They can do just about anything and they continue to grow and improve, yet they remain so humble. When they have featured guest artist, they support and allow their featured artists to shine. Several of them have their own channels and do some solo work. And just for fun Rob and Austin sing Opera. What else can I say? Their catalogue of work is quite large and continues to grow. To see a good quality live performance check out their official live video of their Sea Shanty Medley. Also there is is a live Adam Rupp, beat boxing video. This is usually included in every live performance. You are in for an exciting journey and the Home Fries will be there for you all the way.

I would only add that a review of their ranges would show at least 4 members capable of covering the full baritone range and 3 (both Adams and Tim) able to cover the full bass range. Both Adam Rupp and Tim have blown speakers at the lower end of their ranges.

Yes you are correct Adam Rupp Beatboxer explains in concerts the looper. He shows the audience how he will lay down the drums recording. And play it back so he can add other sounds. But all five of them have at least one beatbox sound they can make. In this track Adam Chance is playing the mouth harp (Digeridoo) you can see at the end of the video.😊

The group started in 2001 by brothers Chris and Adam Rupp They won The Sing Off season 4 2013 that's where they became very popular. They are the only country A Capella ( all vocals no instruments)group but they are honestly do so so much more than just country music they can sing any genre and they do. There is no Lead singer in the group. They each ( except Adam )sing the song and who’s ever voice or voices sound right for the song gets the lead unless is a bass/ baritone song then that’s Tim or Chance. A lot of time they each have a part in the song. Fans of Home Free are known as Home Fries and are very loyal to the guys. Adam Rupp: Beatboxer Extraordinaire ( 41) can make any sound imaginable (A whole drum kit, harmonica (his Nomonica we call it )plane flyovers, trains, castanets, bugs ,birds etc).Co founder from Mankato Minnesota. Rob Lundquist :Lead tenor(beard and glasses) ( 40 )very soulful voice and master whistler from Minneapolis, Minnesota Tim Foust :Bass (had long dark hair now short with grey ) ( 42 ) 5+ octave range can go so low he blows speakers or sky high from Nederland, Texas Austin Brown: High Tenor ( Long wavy hair )( 37 ) voice of an angel from Tifton Georgia. Adam Chance(Aka Chance):Baritone/Bass ( 39 ) deep, rich voice(Does the juice harp sound in Man Of Constant Sorrow) has short dark hair short beard from Baldwin County, Alabama. Replaced Chris Rupp ( Adams Brother and co founder in 2016) They have collaborated with many singers and legends Don McLean: American Pie Oak Ridge Boys: Elvira Kenny Rodgers: Children Go Where I Send Thee (Please watch the end message) Billy Gilman: One Voice Alabama: Christmas In Dixie Mark Wills: Don’t Laugh At Me ( important message at the end ) Lee Greenwood & US Airforce Band: God Bless The USA Any many more. They have 3 amazing songwriters in the group Tim, Austin and Chance So they have a very large playlist of covers and original songs End of the Road (Boyz 2 Men cover ) When A Loves A Woman Helplessly Hoping (5 part harmony masterpiece ) Unchained Melody Butts Medley/ Remix Listen To The Music Can’t Outrun You Brothers In Arms Stargazer Trilogy( All Originals written by Austin) Give Me A Sign ( Chapter 1) Stargazer Lilies( Chapter 2) MR (Chapter 3) Skull And Bones ( original written by Chance for Ubisoft new video game Skull And Bones) Might As Well Be Me ( Original) Playing With Fire ( Original) Remember My Name (Original) Oh Pretty Woman Life Is A Highway Stand By Me Cruise I Want Crazy Christmas In LA ( Newest Release Mayday(DON’T WATCH TILL YOU ARE VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE GROUP AND THEIR RANGES ) There's not a song that you pick from their 200+ catalog that is bad I haven't found one yet. Home Free is amazing. Adam, the beatboxer, is a freak of nature as the boys call him. He was doing the drums, harmonica and other sounds. Chance, back left, was doing the mouth harp (didgeridoo) sound. Austin (lead here) does hard r sounds as he’s southern and two other boys are southern too. They don’t have a lead singer and they sing all genres of music. They also write and sing their own music too. Their newest one is Any Way the Wind Blows and it’s original. 🤩😄

Seen them live three times Adam Rupp used to not have a looper the first time I seen them but he uses one now. But he makes all the sounds and loops whatever he needs in live performance. Its still all live every bit of it. Nothing pre-recorded and looped. And he does that no monica live! Sounds just like a harmonica. They are a fantastic group. Unfortunately Austin Brown the one that carried most of the lead in this song is leaving his full time roll to be at home more and start a family. Us Homefries are supportive of that and we know they will with his help find someone great to replace him. Hopefully the video you watched was better quality then the one we seen so you could see who was doing what. Great rabbit hole to dive down you will not be disappointed, will love Homefree, and will be a honorary Homefry soon!

In regards to that "R" at the end of words, 1. Austin is a Georgia boy with an accent, 2. only in country music genre is the strong "R" sound used at the end of a word. In any other music genres, it's a big no-no (as you pointed out). Home Free, in non-country songs, will sing them correctly without that troublesome R. 😊

If you get to hear their 50th anniversary of American Pie with Don McLean (he asked them to do it with him) Adam the beat boxer had to sustain it for 6 minutes and almost passed out. He's that good! Also, Elvira with the Oak Ridge Boys Adam throws down a drum set master class. Well worth checking out.

They definitely used a looper in various ways. You hear the beatbox rhythm continue while Adam Rupp, the beatboxer, is 'playing' harmonica (often referred to as 'nomonica'). The others can beatbox, but Adam is so much better and it continues in this perfectly from the prior rhythm he produced. The ostinato ("dop dop") is from Rob Lundquist (overalls and big beard) and continues while he sings his lines. They show in live shows how they put that riff on the looper and continue it so he can do other stuff. The 'digeridoo' - which in the USA, especially the southeast, is taken for being an instrument called a jaw harp (a/k/a Jews harp or juice harp) - is done by Adam Chance (called Chance to differentiate from Adam Rupp, who was already there when Chance joined) using the Mongolian throat singing technique, but it is very hard on his throat, so the looper is used.

I'm sure this is already covered, but...
Adam Rupp (back row, in suspenders) is the primary percussionist. There are some vids of him on stage, live, doing fantastic stuff. But even he can't do fake drums, fake harmonica and animal sounds all at the same time. So for this song in concert, they do use a looping machine.
Adam Chance (other side of the back row) is doing other effects for this song, including the jaw harp. Ordinarily, he's the baritone and backup bass.

Ok, so this music video has several layers to it. So, it isn't a loop box for the studio recording. But when they sing live they do use a loop box for the jaw harp, the "dab dab do" and some of the beatboxing while the harmonica part is playing. But you see it when they add it in at the very beginning of the song. It's quite masterful. There are a couple of videos showing the beatboxer's, Adam Rupp, skills. One doesn't have anything but a mic. And the other is with the use of the loopbox. Both are amazing.

check out their Sea Shanty original video from during lockdown...then check out the official live video to see them doing it live....he used to do an old school drum solo during concerts but yes, he uses a looper (not a drum pad) to loop his drum vocals for layering.

Adam Rupp does use a looper for certain things (I've seen them in concert), but he sounds exactly a drum kit and a harmonica (nomonica). Watch one of Adam's drum solo videos...truly amazing.

I saw them live last night in concert and, yes, the beatboxer does use a looper to layer the vocals and some vocal percussion sounds. They used 5 microphones and speakers on the stage. The bass was rumbling us in the seats. They are amazing live. When they performed this live the lead singer in this. Austin, joined in doing the "nomonica" sound. They also mashed up this song with their version of Folsom Prison Blues. It was so stinken cool!

Welcome to the Home Free party. Adam Rupp's beatboxing does sound just like that live. Simply amazing. He does use a looper to allow him to doubletrack in some instances during the live show and they may doubletrack him on studio recordings, too, but he is that talented. There is a very good professional video of their Sea Shanty Medley in which you see Adam using the looper. There are also quite a few videos of his "drum solo" in concert where you can see that he does make all those sounds unassisted. Enjoy the ride.

Adam does use a looper for live shows. The audio behind this video in particular is multi track recordings that have been mixed, as you may have noticed that the drums continued suring the "nomonica" lines. But his beat boxing if freakisly good without need for added effects.
A possible next video is "How Great Thou Art", in which all five sing with no beat boxing. You will be amazed at all of them as you get to know them better.
    Jaw harp, not digerie doo.
You mean pronounce final R sounds like the average American, rather than the pseudo poshness of, say Boston?

Nice comments on the looper. They do use one in concert for this song live to get it started. The mouth harp sound hurts Chance's throat and Rob's doh doh doos are of course looped. And yes they probably did use one for Adam the beat boxer's beat to let him do the nomonika or they just layered another track of him. And yes there are at least 8 or 9 tracks total. But every sound you hear is one of their voices and yes, Adam (the beatboxer) is just that good! That's for sharing! Your rapid fire comments are awesome!

Others have probably already begun this "education", but... The man that had most of the leads in this is Austin Brown (who is about to leave the group). You should definitely check out their cover of "When A Man Loves A Woman". I would also recommend their cover of "Ring of Fire" featuring Avi Kaplan (the former bass singer from Pentatonix). Home Free's bass singer, Tim Foust, has done several collaborations with other a capella artists (Peter Hollens, Voiceplay, and The Bass Gang). Adam Rupp, the beatboxer, has been "accused" of having swallowed a drum kit in his youth. In this, you got to hear his "no-monica". 😉

A couple of little points just to help out. That sound NOT being played on a harmonica is what they call a "nomonica". Adam Rupp, the percussionist (beat boxer), actually learned in originally from Tim Foust the Bass that I think you remember. As for the beat boxing as this is a studio track there may be a looper being used as one is used in live concerts as well.
To get a little idea of what Adam Rupp can do check this out sometime if you wish.

I have heard people say, that YES, they do use a looper sometimes. But from what I know, a looper does NOT change or make a sound. It just records it and repeats it. The sound was made by Adam. And they SHOW the audience him setting up the looper. So they know that he (Adam) make the sounds. And, like you said, if I am wrong, tell me. Great Post, by the way., And the Harmonica sounds, He calls that the No-Monica. LOL.

When they are live, Adam uses a looper on this song, just because there are too many sounds for one person to make at a time. I have seen them live twice and it was awesome both times.
