Same here, but I learnt how to do this b/c our EV shows it this way too... So, 3.5 miles/kwh x 1.609 = 5.6315 km/kWh. 1 / 5.6315 = 177.6 Wh/km. If you want kWh/100 km you have 100 / 5.6315 = 17.8 kWh / 100 km

but wh/km means nothing to me. In Britain we have always used MPG, so MPKwh makes sense.
@@TheophilusPWildbeest that was why I asked to flash it on screen, I get why m/kwh is used, it is just a number that has no meaning to me, and since it is an absurdly expensive car i don't really care enough to look it up, but it is still interesting. Don't know if that makes all the sense ;-)
thanks for a realistic and review of a facelift version. Better in important areas but still the etron that many new EV buyers love. I suspect that this car is far more popular because of its evolution of the Audi brand and the electrification of same, than some other EV's that are too "out there".

104-106kWh (Audi media kit says 106kWh) with much better efficiency and faster charging makes this a long distance road trip beast. 30 minutes stoppage adds a realistic 200 miles of freeway range on top of the nearly 300 miles from 100% down to 10%.

I always look out for your reviews. For some of us of similar heights but heavier build it’s often difficult to judge our relative body mass fit in a vehicle when other present review a vehicles.

Great review, its worth noting that you mentioned at least twice that Audi isn't a brand that's known for making cheap cars, ICE or EVs, and I fully agree, there a luxury brand. There's way too many EV critics whining "where are the affordable EVs?" Not with Audi or Porsche, and that's fine with me because the quality seems to be there and its representative of the asking price. So far I think the German brands have their EV act together with the quality foremost, and their designs are attractive inside and out.
I'm a huge fan of Audi, and while yes they've made expensive cars these prices (75-85k starting) are in line with the gas car, so the premium for battery might be dropping.
All true except that given the competition the Germans are behind, polestar 3 Lotus Eletra, Tesla X even Nio EL7 Xpeng G9 all bespoke platforms very efficient, very competitive and all quicker to sixty than this ..
Everyone who buys an higher priced EV is helping to build the market and pay off the investments that will bring me my cheaper car - I'm very grateful!
I wonder if real world testing will show the efficiency as Audi claim it to be will have to wait and find out from Bjorn, Kyle & Tom when they test the car in real-world.

The e-tron 50 was pretty accurate with its real-world range so I would expect this one to be similar. I think I read somewhere that Audi’s WLTP was one of the most accurate.

It actually looks like they built the front power unit to deliberately extend it upward! There's daylight between the motor and bottom structure, the cv axles appear to line up with the very bottom of the motor, and the inverter is on stilts above.
Just watched this video, and went home and noticed my Gen2 2006 Toyota Prius front wheels having the same front Under Arch Wheel Aero Flap to improve the car's Drag CO-Efficiency. Rightly so that Audi took inspiration from the Prii as they are to date, some of the most efficient ICE cars around.
The issue was not the name, but the range … people were heavily disappointed that a car , initially announced with a range of 600km finally ended as a car where you were happy to reach the 350km .. on a daily use the range was poor not okay. Definitively when you compare it to Tesla S/x ,which was the only point of reference at the time, the range was just simply poor.
They had those flaps on Mercedes c class I was driving almost 30yrs ago, there not new at all.
I have a 2021 E-tron at the moment, I get around 220 miles of range out of a full charge. I don’t see how slightly better aero a slightly more efficient motor and a little larger battery can yield more than 50% extra range! If I ginger the car I can get 2.6 miles/Kw but typically around 2.4-2.5 on road-trips. How can this now get 3.6!?! Let’s see what the real world reviews show us.
They can`t That is just a marketing "trick" for people to spent 80k+ on RC Toy..
And if you put also proper cargo in it will be at best.. 400km range..
Tesla long range manage with 1 motor and 80kWh battery to make 600km with average 160Wh/km. I doubt that 20kWh and two motors and bigger mass will make the same range. From other hand, with over 100kWh battery Mercedes claimed 700km range..
I struggled to get more than 2 m/kWh in my 2020 e-tron 50 - I was probably enjoying driving it a little too much 🤣
The claimed massive jump is only for the new Q8 50, which has got the battery from the outgoing 55 model. Thus in practive a +33% larger battery. Then add that they allow +2% more of the battery to be used and 6-7% lowered consumption. The most fair comparison is looking at the new Q8 50 vs the outgoing 55 (although the latter has slightly more engine power). The Q8 55 will get a +20% larger battery plus the efficiency gains vs outgoing 55, so not as massive range increase there (in precent).
Most modern SUVs achieve around 3m/kWh on the motorway. The outgoing etron's motors and battery tech must have been what, 4+ years old? New motors, new battery improved aero now. If this thing achieves 3.5m/kWh on a summer's day (in the UK) with no wind then you're almost touching the claimed range. I suspect it'll be 3-3.3m/kWh year round = 300-340miles real world?

I have the outgoing etron 55 SUV. It is magnificent but ridiculously heavy and inefficient. This looks like a very good update, but the upcoming PPE EV platform based cars like the Q6 etron should be better still. The new Q8 etron 50 model has as much battery and more range than my 55. Perhaps that’s now the one to choose.
According to Wikipedia, the Mercedes EQC's world premier was 13 days before the original Audi e-tron. So the e-tron wasn't the first for sure. I have no idea if there was another BEV before the EQC though.

I agree with Jack's point about these cars not really fulfilling the true ideals of EV evangelists, but, by compromising, they attract buyers who would otherwise not go EV. It's still a win. Same argument goes for the wheels - a slightly less efficient EV is still better than the alternative. So if that's what it takes to get people to buy them, so be it.
Your right, this a far better offer than the BMW IX, we just want transport.
Absolutely. We must remember not everyone is sold on EVs yet, we need all sorts of electric cars to entice all sorts of people.

Incidentally, the grey satin finish around the grille along with grille styling looks very reminiscent of my Hyundai Ioniq Electric 😅

First gen was given a Ur-name. Like the first Quattro were named Audi Quattro, the first electric was E-tron.

the first Q e-tron was the Q5 hybrid, and then the naming became a mess when they introduced the "e-tron" SUV model. the Q5 was then renamed to either 50TFSIe or 55TFSIe. I have the later and when you start it, and indeed the dials all say "Audi e-tron" on them.
I’ve now watched several of your videos. Definitely the best reviews of EVs I’ve found on the internet. I’m currently in a 2019 Etron (premium plus) that I’m contemplating buying off of the lease. I got a great deal when I leased it new in 2020 and purchase would be $36k before I add an extended warranty. Any thoughts? All new EVs can’t match the luxury without being $80-$100k unless I get a Q4. I’m concreted about long term range and efficiency. Though this would likely be a 2 year stop gap purchase. Added incentive is the SUV tax break at purchase. This car is used for business. Again, any feedback would be appreciated.

No, a Opel Manta from the 1990 looks better than a Tesla...the Steering Wheel is an inherit of the Sidewinder Force Feedback Steering wheel for computer games from the 90th, too...the most awful old fashioned badly build ugly car ever...frome the front as if a snail has hard time to breath since anyone stands on his neck...and people spent a lot of there hard earned money for it...cannot believe it.

What makes the current e-tron enjoyable on long journeys (apart from the car itself which is such a wonderful, quiet and relaxed glider) is the charging curve, as you say. No matter at what SoC or temperature I plug mine in, it pulls around 150 kW all the way to 80% and never drops below 50 even at 99%. Also after three years and 100k km, the battery doesn't appear to have lost any (usable) capacity. With more initial range and improved charging power, it should crack 10 hours in Bjørn's 1k km challenge. So not quite as good as an EQS or e-tron GT but not far from it. I was eyeing an EQS for next year but now I'm not so sure any more. Mostly agree on the camera mirrors. You get used to them eventually - even appreciate them, especially at night - but I wouldn't order them again unless they're less than 10k NOK or so extra. Best and least talked-about feature on the e-tron is infrared night vision. Hope the new one gets it, too.
That's good to hear. I was dubious about this car having a full 10kwh of redundant battery (way more than usual) but seemingly this is why - it enables superior charge curves and batt longevity.
Hey, thanks for the first-hand experience! I wouldn't buy the cameras just for the pricing reason alone. But I hear that Audi owners who selected this option really love it. So, basically, if it was just say 1-2k you'd get it again?
@@davidberan9612 If you're talking 1k in € or $ it would have to be less than that for me to pick the cameras again. Upsides and downsides are a wash, basically - at least for me. Still catch myself leaning forward or sideways to adjust my viewing angle when reversing or on an onramp until I remember that doesn't change anything - which is subconsciously frustrating. On the other hand the clarity at night where cars overtaking can be clearly seen rather than just being two glaring orbs in physical mirrors makes up for that. Plus IMO the car looks better without the voluminous mirrors. So yeah, worth some money for me but not a lot. YMMV
I was about to post the exact same thing. We love our 2019 e-Tron and the fast charging makes up for the short range it has.
@@davidberan9612 The cameras were standard on my '20 car (launch edition) and are standard on my (ordered but not yet received) q8 etron. i've done 53,000 miles and have no issues with them. but each to their own, they take a little getting used to but not much.
I would have liked to see the drivers electronic controls shown in the interior segment.
I ordered a Volvo C40 (which arrives in a couple weeks) but monthly cost doesn't vary that much for Q8 which is very interesting (for leasing at least). Might have to re-consider when I change car after this contract expires.
I drive a VW Tiguan today and been dissatisfied with their build quality but Audi been better in the past so perhaps Q8 being in the upper tier is better in that area.

Too big! These are rolling traffic jams. A friend sold a Q7 because they couldn't park it in their street, and in my town big SUVs regularly cause bottlenecks because oncoming vehicles can't get past.

It's also not my market segment, way too big, but they look absolutely fantastic. Inside and out. When you compare this to the iX, you worry for BMW.
Hopefully they actually bring out the car with finished software. My Q4 is 1 year old and still haven't gotten an upgrade to enable the basic standard functionality. So surprised that no review online talks about the BETA software that Audi delivers to sold cars. Audi should focus on delivering finished cars including proper software and decrease the number of models they bring out.

How good is the longer curve for the battery. What are the the effects in terms of battery longevity?
My '20 55 sportback, on 21" rims, has done 53,000 miles and the range is better than when I bought it, due to software updates. It regularly shows 240 miles on 100% in a UK summer.

The UK has always measured its roads in miles. I have the opposite problem:- The spec's are always in KW per 100KM 🤣

I had an e-tron 50 as a company car and it was the most beautiful thing - the interior was pretty much perfect. The only disappointment was the range (I was getting 150-175 miles out of it) and the efficiency.
We currently have an A4 Avant while we wait for Audi to develop the EV version and it does 450 miles on a full tank of fuel (it’s a Quattro so runs on E95 - ouch!) so an etron with almost 400 miles of range is going to be a game-changer.
One question on the interior - I presume it has the customisable lighting like the outgoing e-tron? Sitting in the car with the lights set to “calypso” was like being in a spa 🤣
Ive got the Etron 50 now (had it since July) and the range is a real big issue. AGree as soon as they get top 350 / 400 they are a no brainer.... But they are expensive!
The new 50 has more range than my current 55. Range is less of an issue than I thought when I switched to EV. It’s also about charging speed on a long run. The interior lighting was an option on mine as part of the comfort and sound pack. I’m hoping the new cars have a better level of standard equipment. My Technik 55 is pretty woeful for equipment.
It would have been good to know more about any software improvements including automatic driving on motorways etc.

@@ThomasT1976 Teslas' motorway autopilot is very good, it's their "Full Self Driving"(FSD) that is still in Beta testing, yet appears to be improving fairly rapidly.
My 2016 Kia Soul EV+ (not the most aerodynamic vehicle ever made) almost always gets 4.2 miles per kilowatt hour, dropping to around 3.8 on the highway (still good), so I'm pretty happy with that.

I think Porsche were 'first' to have light bars, which everyone else then copied.
A bit of a resurrected idea though, because some American cars in the late 80s and early 90s had front and rear light bars, including Mercury and Pontiac.

Jack carefully avoids mentioning the estimated UK price. Do the back seats fold flat, and how much physical length does that give?

That C pillar on the non-sports back (why would you get one of those?) looks rather Bentley-esk. The front badge if you had've described it about it being flat like it is eww, but seeing it, it makes so much sense and looks great. I did laugh during the under the skin bit, the mention of Hyundai, the wheels stopped turning, like the Audi model said yeah nah Mate, mention another marque we aren't going to do our thing, soon as Jack mentioned Audi, the wheels start moving again, like the model is saying yeah ok thats better talk about us! I want something like an A5 Sportback e-tron with 500km+ range and design elements from the GT (which is by it-self kind of like an A7 e-tron).

Great review, but if Audi doesn’t get on board with bespoke BEV platforms, too many competitors who are will make them also-rans.
No more compromises with interior space, handling, design, or layout. BEV platform now!
I think they will be fine, there are still plenty of Euro fans who won't touch a tesla because of the austere interior and questionable build quality, and their other real rivals BMW and Mercedes have yet to make a decent looking EV. One looks like it has a pig nose or baboon's bottom in the front depending on the car, and the other looks like they are making jelly beans with wheels. The mass market luxury buyer outside silicone valley can care less about the tech, they just want it to look good, not fall apart, be comfortable and have decent range, this checks all those boxes.

Nio EL7 And Xpeng G9 also bespoke, better value and faster than this fat compromised crossover. Polestar 3, Lotus Eletra all versions bespoke also on menu...... Germans brands will start to lose their shine if they don't keep up with car underpinning tech...
This was just a facelift!...A4 Etron, A6 Etron, Q6 etron are on their way already...they will get an 800v Architecture like Taycan and Audi e-Tron GT, too...coming soon in 2023 to 25...

Seen 'wheel spoilers' in one form or another on a lot of cars for decades so not sure why they're championing it as something new!
Yesterday I parked up next to a E-Tron in a MG4, my first thoughts where that the Audi is a gift to the anti EV crowd, big, expensive, and I've heard argued more locally polluting than a small modern diesel. That last point is contentious, but difficult to argue against.

@@brunoheggli2888 You had better ask the anti's, from my observation of anti EV comments, "too expensive" refers to 2 things, firstly they are so much more expensive than ICE, second governments are legislating to 'save the planet' putting more resources into each car isn't helping.

It's 1 hour behind in time and about 10 years behind in EV charging infrastructure.
The one upside of an economic downturn is that demand for huge vehicles may start to decrease?
The car in the first 7 or so minutes of this vehicle looks identical to my car. I have the same 22" wheels, that's the "chronos grey" special paint - and the car has an identical sillouhette. I'm kind of surprised with this announcement if I'm honest, as this model gets so much hate. I expected they'd just scrap it in favour of the new "A6" concept they've been touting. The level of refinement in the original e-tron vs any Tesla model is off the charts and its performance is rarely matched. YES it doesn't have chart topping range, but while you won't arrive at your destination with much charge in the battery - you will arrive recharged.
7:59 I don't understand what he is saying, it has the skateboard battery and a frunk, what more is to it? Double stack batteries under the rear bench to extend capacity like in the Taycan. Battery junction box in the middle for better servicability like in the Taycan. 🤷

I really wish they came up with a different naming structure for their EVs. The A and Q should've been left to the ICE vehicles. That way, there doesn't need to be the term Etron after the name.
Why can't manufacturers make left- and right-sided wheel rims? On one side the rims 'point' forwards, and the other side they 'point' backwards. Once you see it it cannot be unseen, hahaha! It's a pet peeve of mine that even luxury car makers cannot get this right.

I wait for the day when rural fuel stations have their own windmill to generate much cheaper electricity (with normal cabled grid electricity to supplement).

Wow. Imagine a car company that advances its technology beyond where it was previously. Audi is really on to something, that’s for sure.
Audi did a great job with the battery and software to move to the next level. However, they did not refresh the interior. I wished they had combined the two screen into a large screen display. That is why I passed on the e-tron the first time. The platform will be shared with Porsche. I want to see their model before deciding. Good review of the Q8 e-tron. Thank you.

I love my e-Tron and the interior is gorgeous! I really dislike the trend towards the giant single screens in EVs and I hate the look of Teslas. The e-Tron has got a good mix of real buttons and the twin screens work really well for their intended functions. Very responsive too.
Porsche are working on the Porsche Macan EV it will definitely be a bespoke platform for the prices they ask
I loved the e-tron display, the HUD had plenty of info and I liked having the centre console one separate. I find the single-displays too distracting.
My 2019 A6 as the same dual screen setup. After over 3.5 years, it’s proven reliable and easy to use. Looking at a gigantic 21” screen is overwhelming. I’m waiting for the authorities to start regulating screens inside vehicles. If we can use smartphones while driving, why the hell are cars allowed to ship with cinematic monitors glaring drivers in the face constantly?

I think Audi wanted it to look smaller by putting it in a place with loads of light.
I suppose the situation right now for legacy manufacturers is a bit like it was for camera makers in the late 90s. Those who got onboard the digital train thrived, while others, well, didn't.

Bigger battery to get more miles - thats the same as a bigger fuel tank. A dumb way to get more range. Especially given electricity is so expensive presently. Smaller, lighter is the only long term answer.
My thoughs exactly. But Audi caters only to the wealthy, and they care more about looking wealthy than being efficient, so that's what they get. Same as Porsche, or any of the 'high end' brands
