The fact they hyped up this announcement for ages is what makes it so lacklustre. Doing a Bachmann, Accurascale is one thing of announcing a stunning new model, but the old Lima HST with a rubbish motor , the old Airfix tool 1999 release mk3's , 1980's procor van , a niche steam locomotive with a smoke generator unit & rerun of the Drax biomass carriers as another limited run certainly lacks the gloss of what their rivals do. A company void of ideas or void of money?

Unfortunately and I dont want to upset anyone. Hornby are becoming a bit of a joke lately . With very little in the way of information ( Sam's trains a few months ago talked about this ).The quality control on it's models. And the ever increasing price of it's models. The railroad H.S.T. that they have just realised is probably the old lima model and most of it's railroad locos are . Admittedly now have a better motor. But what your paying for is like I said is basically an old lima model.
So I do wonder why Hornby do the things they do and say . They seem to think that they are a good company ! When they are failing on many issues. Which is a shame and not good for the hobby.

I have a black five steam generator on order for just over 2 1/2 years but I am quite concerned with the new release black five’s that are not steamed generated models with lots of problems I’ve seen on TH-cam. Lot less chance of a problem now the flags have gone up to the problems that may have been there.
Overall not actually major problems, cleaning a connector isn't a HUGE issue, nipping around the loco with an appropriate tool and tightening up the crank pins isn't a HUGE task... it's largely bleating from people who stand to make money from attention seeking over the issue rather than taking a balanced view of how severe the issues are.
They also use lines like "it costs so much these days" "when we're paying this much" but actually you're not really paying that much more than 20 years ago for the model and you're paying more for a lot of other things in life but not the train. Comparing basic income, what you can earn in an hour, to then and now the base model of the black 5 costs you the same number of hours work as it did when the 2002 tooling came out. About 20 hours in a minimum wage job is what you need to work to get it then and now. Relative to the lowest earnings you can make per hour it is the same price basically. Are there more expensive and fancy varitions with sound and steam and DCC, yup and they cost what they do.
The main people who cover modelling on youtube are full of it and manipulative of people's emotions when it comes to price of things instead of giving real factual accounts of what the cost was then compared to now.

    • @alanwagstaff16
      @alanwagstaff16 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I would think that by now all the issues with the black 5 have been sorted out . But that don't seem the case with a lot of Hornbys models of late .

No matter how they announce it, not much new under the sun is there?
As for the hush hush steam generator, as that's the only one that sits in the era I would buy, can't speak for the rest, but it's all about what I see as useless expensive gadgets.
The only plus point is that it's harmless water, that's vaporized, rather than the unhealthy oils that were vaporizes in the past.
And they happily announced "it doesn't lose that much water as the previous equipped models"🤯,
what is there objective, ruining your layout?
And for those who think it's realistic you're going to be disappointed, you never going to get the big black and white clouds a real steamer makes, besides that, this effect can only be used on big loco's and I doubt it that a lot of collectors are really waiting for this, even if money is not an issue for you to buy it.
And even if this is your thing, keep in mind this is new technologie, how long will it last before you can say "this is a very expensive loco with a steam generator that doesn't steam anymore…".
Best part is, I got time to save up some money for new good tooled models in the future😅

While I do agree that the build-up towards the announcements gave the impression of something "more", I do like the Q&A session, they give me some insights into Hornby's thinking, which I find interesting. I do wish they would work on their sound issues; it can be extremely hard to hear what they are saying at times. All in all, I enjoyed the live stream. Well considering that Hornby did a 21 pin Class 60 update in 2022 and others. I was hoping that Hornby would have done more liveries on their Class 60 model. Also with Accurascale and Cavalex Models also making a Class 60 for 2025. Hornby missed out on some potential Class 60's for Christmas 2024 because that would have made them a bit of profit from Christmas presents and those that wanted something interim. Another poorly planned setup. Now I can focus on the Accurascale Class 60's as Hornby have nothing I want and Accurascale wins my custom from both Hornby and Cavalex Models. I do O gauge nowadays but I would be a fool to pass up on the Accurascale Class 60's and I am looking forward to getting about 3-4 of them for display.

Well, those biomass wagons would look ridiculous on my 1930's GWR branchline, nor fit the passing loops. No sale there. No way do I want or need an HST in ANY livery - so no sale there, and am I reading the hush-hush engine's price right? Twentynine THOUSAND and umpty-pumty dollars, or is that a misprint on the caption? Even three hundred squid is way, way too much, I don't want gadgets which are temperamental and fallible - and besides, since when did No 10,000 ever run in Cornwall?
So you can see Hornby are going to do very, very well out of my custom!
