    Fate/Zero has such powerful details hidden in so many scenes. One detail I always overlooked and just recognized the other day.
    It's one of the scenes where Gilgamesh talkes to Kirei, shortly after Assassin gets killed.
    Gilgamesh has this chess board with the figures of the 7 servants and the 7 masters (simple pawn figures). He takes away the figure of assassin and puts it nexto the board. Then he takes the pawn figure that was standing infront of assassin to knock over the pawn infront of the archer figure.
    After seeingbthe anime you obviously know what it means..Gilgamesh being tired of having Tokiomi as a master, so he wants Kirei to kill him and to become his new master. They do talk about this later on but I like how it's protrait compleatly with visuals and camera shifts.
    This show is just a masterpiece.

    I gotta say, your analysis on Fate/Zero was pretty damn good. It was longer than other reviews on YT, but you took your time to properly explain your thoughts and present the various aspects of the show. Very good job.
    This, alongside your Re:Zero video, shows that you are quite good at doing analysis videos like this. Hope to see more in the future.

    This was one of the best analysis of Fate Zero i have ever seen. It truly surprised me, that there were things that even i, someone that watched it more thimes that can count, missed.
    I personally can't decide if i like Fate Zero or Fate Stay Night more (or all the other series of Fate). Fate Stay Night was first, and Fate Zero came after it, building upon what Fate Stay Night established. I do have to say that Fate Stay Night and it's routes follow the rather well known route of Hero, as established by Joseph Campbell. It did it however in a way that ... i was speechless. At the time, i had already watched/read Naruto, Bleach, and other stories with the same basic outline. Fate Stay Night somehow baffeld me, made me ask question i never considerd. And simularly, Fate Zero was a masterpiece that followed it better than i imagined possible. Thus - i can only see them as equal.
    It was enlightfull, interessting and brought back some really good memories.
    Along with quiet a few tears.

    Caster and Ryunoske's conversation is theologically brilliant in a demented way even in its short 5 minute length. While it can be sarcastically summerised as "what if god LOVES killing children," it's also so much more than that. The conclusion Caster comes to is that blasphemy and worship are equal as forms of godly devotion. His reasoning is that in both cases, the person is defined by their relationship to god. A worshipper has a positive relationship, and a blasphemer has an antagonistic relationship to god, but they're equal in the sense that both sides revolve around how they act towards god. They're both devoted to him, either in support or in opposition. This is a horrifically clever character writing, and is an intriguing philosophy for him to have. Caster views his actions as undeniably holy because of how UN-holy his attrocities are. Since he's doing them for the purpose of blasphemy, he's devoting himself to god and thus, is just as good as a saint through that devotion. It's a testament to the show's character writing that Caster is one of its least developed characters when there's so much theological philosophy to unpack

    I really enjoyed your series. My only critique in F/Z (and pretty much all of Orobuchi's work) is that the characters feel like a compilation of beliefs instead of real people. It was somewhat appropriate this time around, but I can't help feeling like Kayneth, Berserker, and Saber were the only "real" personalities in the show.
    Still one of my favorites of all time.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  8 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Glad you enjoyed! I get what you're saying - some characters can seem like personified ideals instead of real characters. I definitely understand your gripe, and I agree with it to some extent, but as a counterpoint: some of these characters go through such insane circumstances that it is nearly impossible to predict how a real person would react to them. Who's to say that someone that goes through what Kiritsugu did wouldn't have an ideal/belief manifest in them and essentially take over the essence of their being?
      Also, I would add Waver to that list of "real" personalities you have - he felt incredibly genuine, at least to me. And Irisviel, while maybe not being "real," had characterization that I thought was entirely believable considering what her life had been like. Meh, just my two cents.
      Either way, thanks for watching!

    • @theproofistrivial7677
      @theproofistrivial7677 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Aleczandxr I would add Kiritsugu. Yes, he does act out an ideology, but it was never just that. Given his past we entirely understand why he holds this ideal and why he clings to it like he’s drowning. And my own answer is, I don’t think he could have moved forward in life without it. He has seen so much senseless destruction and violence, he would sink into utter despair if he didn’t wear his ideology like an armor. He’s a closet nihilist, held together by the hope that maybe one day he can bring this nihilistic violence to an end. He just wouldn’t have anything to do otherwise. He’s not blinded by earthly pursuits. He doesn’t believe in justice or glory. Imagine, being him, and knowing that there’s nothing he can do to stop the things that traumatized him so much. He just wouldn’t do anything, fallen depressed and probably imploded. He’s utterly broken as a person. He’s so broken that he cannot live a normal life and savor life’s small pleasures, as Irisviel implied. Imagine giving him a lot of money and telling him to go to university, get a high paying job, marry a beautiful woman, have 2 kids, drive a nice car. That motivates most people, and it’s not a bad motivation, but he’s not normal anymore due to his life experiences, and he cannot enjoy them. Not even if you hand them to him on a silver platter. If he doesn’t have this ideology, he’d waste away. He would have no raison d’etre, because he is fundamentally incapable of enjoying life as we do. So he continues to kill and to toil, and tells himself that he’s saving the world.

    One of my favorite parts about F/Z is that kiritsugu emiya isn't as selfless as he thinks he is or tries to be. And it just destroys him when that realization hits him, that there's no way for him to save everyone. He realizes he was cheating on his wife (with Maya who he basically used pragmatically to out his natural human desires), that he failed to enjoy the time he had with them for his ideals, and when his efforts to try to at least remove the cursed grail and causes a city to burn, he is confronted with his actual death count. He saves 1 person, and that's the only thing that kept him from completely losing all sense of self. But even afterwards, he lived as a shallow husk of a man and died young. Nasu and Urobuchi just kept kicking this man while he was down.
    Kiritsugu was a human that tried to be a machine.
    Shirou was a machine that tried to be human.

    This video hits on something that I think makes Fate/Zero so brilliant as a prequel. It states that the show gets much better when you know where everything ends up. If you read the Fate/stay night VN first, you already know how it ends, so you go in with the knowledge of where everything's going beforehand, and that tragic inevitability hangs over it from moment one.

    Loved it, but I have felt the same as you on Fate/Zero, and have dissected it over and over and despite watching it at least twice a year, still seem to find something of fascination that I'd either forgotten or just noticed upon a subsequent rewatch. There is SO much more that could be said, but, this is one of those shows you could just sit back with a friend and discuss for hours if you were both passionate enough about it (Though I'm not quite fortunate enough to have friends capable of a real philosophical dialogue or much interest in anime, so watching a video like this is the closest I can get to hearing another's unique perspective on it). Each servant and master and their respective relationship and differences alone could probably take a whole video up, with maybe an exception for Tokiomi and Ryuunosuke.
    Overall a great watch and you've luckily got a calm voice that's easy to listen to. It was a pleasure. Thank you for the videos you make.

    Excellent analysis. I am in the process of rewatching FZ and wanted to extend it by watching analysis of it, so I wish it was even longer :). There's also something you missed, the tragedy and nihilism spill into the title and the main theme track, which by the way is brilliant. Everything is fated to return to point zero. No matter the effort and sacrifice, heroes (both in context of history and the story) can't change anything. But also very the focus on a subsequent grail war, shows that history repeats itself. No one has ever truly won any grail war, and most likely no one ever will. There are many indications of this. If one of the founding families won, they would wish to be the best, to dominate, or even to be immortal, but we know that not one of them dominates, and they've been breed to take part in the war for generations. Another indication is that their world is too similar to ours. The grail should allow any winner to put the world upside down and then some, but their world is vanilla. So the Fate universe is stuck in a loop, and the grail is a bomb with a timer always counting down to another tragedy. Another thing worth noting is that since the grail can supposedly bestow any wish, it could be said that it's the physical form of all desires and ambitions. This in turn shows that all desires and ambitions are not only are impossible to fulfil, but are also destructive, as to suggest that it's better to just not have them. That is the crux of the nihilism. Also, UBW simply doesn't have the emotional impact that FZ has.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks, I find that on rewatch the show only gets better and better. And I didn't really miss that, per se, I just decided not to tackle it as the video was already 40+ minutes, haha. My mind was full of ideas even at then end of making this one but I decided to let some of them be as hopefully I had communicated why I loved the series. Not too worried that I left that out, tbh. And yes, that is definitely another prominent nihilistic idea that the narrative communicates, good one. Lastly, yeah, I agree about UBW. The anime felt really shallow in comparison. Can't speak of the visual novel's quality, though.

      @@Aleczandxr I want to present my view on ubw. I think Emiya Shirou is one of the unique presentation of a hero. His actions never lead a perfect result. He want to save everyone but his effort to save someone always lead a destruction for others. He want to truly understand the concept of hero in humanity and a way where he can really able to save everyone. It actually ask the question about these heroes that is it really what they do is right for everyone. How it is actually work? You can say that he ask the question that what make someone right.
      Shirou is very twisted character and you can even call him the embodiment of every hypocrisies of any superheroes. he is very different to a normal human being. Many normal humans also have this very optimistic dream. Normal humans have this dream but they have their own sense of justice. But shirou is very different. he has a ideal but he didn' have any sense of good or evil or any form of justice. he only try to save others for satisfying his need of pleasure or the feeling of alive. he didn' even know the true reason of his dream. He also said this in Unlimited Blade Works route.
      [I swore so as a child.
      To fulfill the dream of the man I admired most.
      …But to be honest, I'm still wondering…
      If my idea is the right one.
      Where my idea comes from.
      What I can do even despite me being just an amateur.
      How to make the dream of making everybody happy, which Kiritsugu always talked about, come true.]
      his every ideal is copied. he copied everything from Kiritsugu. Even his morality is also copied from his father. he mindlessly follow it and trying to save others without thinking because he just want to feel that smile again which is present in Kiritsugu's face. he even also want a enemy or some 'true evil' to defeat as a superhero to feel that feeling of pleasure. kirei also point out which shirou wanted to prove wrong.
      [Rejoice, boy. Your wish will finally come true."
      The priest says, as if declaring an oracle.
      Those words are...
      Aren't those the true feelings I haven't yet realized
      "What are you saying all of a sudden?"
      "You should know. Your wish will not come true unless there is a clear evil. Even if it is not something you approve of, a superhero requires a villain to defeat."
      "!"
      I feel like everything has turned black.
      The priest said it.
      The greatest wish and the ugliest wish I have are the same.
      …Yes, the desire to protect something…
      …Is, at the same time, none other than the wish for something to violate it
      " Y-You"
      But there's no way I'd wish for something like that.
      I don't remember a moment when I've wished for that.
      Such an insecure wish…
      …Just means the target ideals are inconsistent.
      But the priest says as if to pierce my heart, "Good thing you have an enemy now."
      "No, you do not have to gloss over it. Your worries are normal for a human being."
      The priest smiles.
      "!"
      I shake off the priest's words and walk to the door.
      ]
      He later also said that he think he did actually want a enemy in fate route. that's why he actually want to change saber as a more "human" for her sake but never understand his own hypocrisy. that is the reason why fate route is route which explains Shirou ideals very well. Shirou forces his copied morality and fake love of human towards everyone without understanding their problems. he has very limited emotion and he can't understand the emotion of others. But he also never understand that he also has his own "true self" of his own but he never understand his true self in fate route. We also understand that his love toward human is not fake but it is the characteristics of his true self. it is also said by Kirei in heaven's feel route
      [I see. So that means you will not follow Kiritsugu's path."
      He talks as if he's disinterested.
      The priest regards me with a bored expression, as if disappointed.
      "Father's path…?"
      "That's right. Your father loved humans.
      Higher, wider, farther. He loved humans as they go over their limits without end. That is why he turned himself into the definite evil.
      That man would have killed Matou Sakura. He threw away his human emotions for the sake of justice."
      "…Is that any different from you?
      Casting away one person's happiness for the sake of justice, for many people's happiness."
      "No. What you people call happiness did not bring me joy."
      "Huh…?"
      That's not a reply.
      No, more than that…
      He's not even looking at me.
      "Right, we were different.
      He threw away what he had, but I had nothing to throw away.
      The result was the same, but the process was completely different.
      His existence was too unpleasant. His agony was truly unpleasant.
      If he went to such lengths to cast it away, he should never have had it in the first place. But still he agonized over his decision, trying to pick it back up after he threw it away. As if saying that is the correct way for humans to live."
      "The difference was crucial. Yes. If I cannot obtain anything, why was I born into this world?"
      The priest' words are not directed at anyone.
      ...But they contain anger.
      They contain emotion, which i thought this man didn't have.
      "…Hah. Come to think of it, there is no way you can succeed Kiritsugu. He did what was necessary by throwing things away, but you insist on having it both ways.
      We are similar, you and I.
      You died once and broke down when you were resurrected. It is posteriori, but you are like me, a defect from birth."

      "What…? What part of me is broken?"
      "You just do not realize it.
      You have no concept of self. So I did not think you would concern yourself with a single person. No, rather"
      You are not concerned about many,
      but concerned about all as if they were only one.]
      In ubw he started to saw the hypocrisy of his own ideals with help of Archer and Rin and his experiences in ubw route. he understand that his ideal is always false. he has not any sense of justice and even his self. he also understand the inconsistencies of ideal of not just his own but also the ideals of others heroes. others heroes only force their ideals on the basis of their own ideals. He understand that he can't save everyone by forcing his ideal on someone. his way of saving only destroy anyone for others and only lead despair. But this is the route where he understands the true meaning of his ideal and his true self. he actually loved humans but very differently to his father. he loved the human emotions, love, compassion, shared human nature and values. He thinks that good and bad are situational. There are right and wrongs and those who didn't fear to this always lead a destruction. he want to become superhero to spread this shared nature and love of human toward each other into everywhere to form a ideal "human society" where everyone understand other's feelings and also think about the gain and loss of others as well as themselves without any prejudice and also create justice in this world. Shirou want to create a world filled with 'Swords'. swords represent Shirou's selflessness and his live for others. he want to create a ordered world where people also punishes those are bad or wrong in that situation. To destroy discimination, he want to first create a selfless world by eradicating prejudice and spreading the human nature. But it is still impossible to satisfy everyone. it still lead nowhere but it is able to create a better world. that's why he said
      ["I have created a thousand blades .
      Unaware of loss
      Nor aware of gain"]
      And
      [“Everything is here, and nothing is here.
      That is why this is called Unlimited Blade Works.
      This is the only definite answer obtained by the one who lived as a sword all his life.”]
      The reason why Archer hate Shirou or himself. Because he never has his own values and way of justice. He just follows it for pleasure. That is the biggest reason why Archer fall into despair in the end and only end as a puppet or scapegoat for human's love and hatred both.
      The thing is when their swords collide. He get the memories of Archer. He experienced this memory of atrocities very similarly to the curse of Angra Mainyu but this time he understands the meaning and also importance of those curses. Shirou's resolution is that he tries to save everyone. He will create a situation through which he can save everyone even it is difficult not like Kerry or Archer. They don't try to save everyone or tries to find a way through which he can resolve those disputes. They just try to find a best way to save more people. But he will not regret if he can't save someone like Archer or Kerry which ultimately lead them to their beliefs.

      @@Aleczandxr Further from my previous comment,
      Shirou's resolution in the end of ubw is definitely far more complicated and twisted than kiritsugu's resolution. I will not call it superior but it is definitely unuque. A world can only be changed when it's people tried to change it. And for this people should know about what is humanity and how it works. They should understand the shared nature between humans. Their love, Their tendency to care each other, compassion, emotions, their tendency to create mutual bonds, learn from their mistakes, accept their sins and use these all these things collectively for the benefits of others. Shirou love human. This is his ‘true self’ i.e he understands in the end of ubw and throw his ‘fake self’ which only try to save for his own pleasure. He already gained the answer that he can't save everyone. But now he know that it is never possible. But humans can change it. He want to create this world by influencing through his action. He influence others to become like him who thinks about other's benefit more than his own. And lead people to a ordered world which is filled with swords like him and that can possibly lead a utopia. He act as a pinnacle of the human beings selflessness to influence other to become like him and they can collectively influence world and their people to have mire faith in selfless act and other well being. They think about themselves as well as others benefits without prejudice and create a order which try to satisfy everyone but also teach society the fear of what is right and wrong in different situations. (Well this ordered world theory is given by archer but Shirou combine this dream with his own to create a better ideal. He learn from Archer). He will take every type of suffering and throw evrything for it to inspire other about this suffering. so people would also understand the suffering of others and started to create 'Heroes'. The thing is he considered living like this is beautiful. He considered enduring the suffering of others is very beautiful. In short he want to turn himself into a person who take every pain and suffering from others onto him and not giving those pain to others, to inspire others to be like him and lead a better world. he loves human so much that he loves taking pain, suffering and consequences of hypocrisies of every selfish human dreams from others to make them happy and to show human a better path for living as a 'real' human and also show that what human can do. So that no one would suffer from these selfish hypocisies. To teach other that pursue these selfish dreams by trying to eradicating these hypocrisies. He will not become a person like archer in which everyone force their mistakes to show their goodness but he will become a idol for others to inspire them to become like him and love others. He also accept hatred and sins of humanity and show the beauty of these ugliness and show how to use it improve humans as whole and use it to spread love and compassion towards each other even more. Shirou is a void who has not any values and sense of justice. He interpreted his existence is possible because of humans and for humans. That's why he take the decision to hold his own sense of selflessness and dream to guide others human's and their individuals ideals to interpret other's ideals as well to understand humanity as whole better. He want to guide or change human to believing this way of living by the influence of his actions, his guidance and beauty of this dream. He have not any ideals but he want to guide every human's ideals in right path by understanding every ideals and even the hate and love both towards his own ideals to convert his ideal into more better one.

    • @HerMi.T
      @HerMi.T 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Aleczandxr Further from my previous two comments, Still he has not any solid ideal even in the end. He still doesn't know how to protect this world. And yeah he fights for his ideal. But People are wrong that he didn't love humanity. This is the thing which attracted him not kiritsugu's smile. It is the thing which forces him try to define everyone and try to make them happy. This is the true reason behind his ideal which he understands in end. He also said in the fight with Archer that at first it is admiration but it is actually the try to save undone this hell and destroy his hollowness by essence of humanity.
      it is true that he make path to follow and try to really save everyone without discarding anyone. But the point is he will never get true success in his path. But this journey is representation of his true self and this self itself is enough for his success because it creates hope for ideal world and this hope is enough for human beings to try endlessly to reach the horizon of humankind. You would find that his resolution is interesting to listen but actually is it even possible in reality? Because the reality of world is quite nihilistic. The end of world is inevitable. People cannot save everyone and they can't even save themselves in the end. Objectively, there is no god and bad also. And even a good ideal for some people can be considered as evil for others. It means human should live their even it needs to sacrifice other and they don't accept anything as a result. They shouldn't love or hate others. But their is a problem. Even though it is logically true but is it true that there no evil or good. Actually Shirou's realisation in the end is definitely a try to change this world. But the reality is that his realisation actually change himself in the end. His way of living life is optimistic or more correctly optimistic nihilism. He know that even his way of saving has huge chance of failure. It is also possible that he could also be ended as evil for others. But his dream of hope is itself enough to elevate himself as a human to change this world. Just like you said good and evil can't be destroyed because it creates balance in the world. But just the hope of true equality and justice. The hope of guiding humans in their respective path is itself beautiful. This beauty can elevate every human to live his life in this world and try to find his own meaning in this world and way of living. So this hope, try if ideal world and enough knowledge of consequences really help every human to actually save themselves and world. One statement perfectly fit in his situation i.e
      “I don't know if it was correct or not.
      Nobody will be able to determine that.
      The beautiful things are ugly and ugly things are beautiful.
      There is nothing disgusting, once you look at it objectively.
      So why is there such a deviation in world?
      Sophistry, falsehood, trickery and vanity.”
      It is of course shirou's own statement. He question this exact question when he get the memory of Archer and asked himself that why he felt this deviation if he thinks good and bad is actually not existed. Why he regretted for this? And why he even follows it in the end?
      It can also be explained with Angra Mainyu ending in hollow ataraxia where because of shirou's influence, he remembers his resolution as human after prayed as demon. He understands that humans are ugly but this also make them beautiful because they can find beauty even in ugliness of the world. He understands this feature of human being make world as a whole much more beautiful. The hope of creating a world where no one can be harmed is a beautiful thought and this things actually is the reason which drives human to live their life and create curiosity to understand themselves much more better to improve themselves which is actually impossible. In the end, this optimistic view actually make this world much more better place. Everyone has different way to reach the true happiness according to them but objectives are always same for every human being. That's why effort to make this world better is not fruitless and actually this effort to change many lives. Atleast this path can create a world without meaningless bloodshed. I mean if they had a hope like this and believe like this. They atleast try to achieve their goal in better way. It definitely didn't change the factor of sacrifices but it is much more manageable. And this hope can create a beautiful world where people atleast try to understand each other. In the end, we have to sacrifice someone. But this type of hope,desire and satisfaction with only the journey of this ideal is enough to create caring and love nature toward each other. We would sacrifice someone but we cherish for their sacrifice and try to save others because of it. In this world atleast, everything which is important as a human being to elevate in higher heights with more comfort in our life as whole is only possible because of this nature to care each other and co-operation along with our own selfishness. That's why as a human we should spread this motto of cooperation and better world by destroying hate in world to live a successful life.
      That's what I want to say that hope is the thing which is the reason why human is able to strive in this world. Hope elevate us from a mere animals. Sacrifices are needed to save others. You had to sacrifice someone to save others. We can't change it but we can atleast try to save everyone. We have to spread humanity, save others and guide others to have hope to create a paradise but also accept sacrifices. Without humanity no one can create a better world. I mean without understanding others and without changing everyone. You can't create a better world. Changing in a right path to someone can't be succeeded. Because nothing is right in this world. Something is right for someone are not right for others. But we can try or hope to change world with humanity, saving others or guiding others go understand the shared emotion or nature of every human or in this case every beings. Everyone has different way to reach their path and they are conflicting also. But this hope or try of better world can find path through these all conflicting ideals but it always needed humanity. But in the end, we can't save everyone but we can enjoy this world. We can even enjoy or find beauty even ugliness of humanity. He becomes one of the best hero in ubw route which didn't consider anyone evil and know how it is a difficult to consider someone true sinner. He will guide them in their own terms but also teach them the importance of humanity. So that they never forget their own humanity because he will not kill them but this world will definitely kill them. True paradise is only existed in infinity. But your effort to reach infinity can create a change. You never able to reach infinity but you definitely able to reach somewhere with help of your humanity. You definitely able to create a change which definitely create a better world but that world also create despair again in the long term. It is the true cycle of humanity and we had to follow it. That's why Emiya Shirou decided to fight for eternity because he understands the cycle of hope and despair or wishes and curses. He decided to accept both of them and find beauty in both of them. So that he can guide humans with light of hope in despair because both hope and despair is essential in human life. They will solve their mistakes with them. They will perfected themselves with it where they started to understand each other's despair and hope. So that they can create a better world where they again started to stumble but this cycle itself is the source of life and happiness for them. Did you remember madoka magica anime written by gen urobouchi? The main core of this show is cycle of despair and hope. Emiya Shirou understand this cycle and accepted. It find this cycle itself is beautiful. Gen take a more optimistic path in madoka magica where main character was able to manipulate the fabric of time. But Shirou take the more realistic approach and accepted every despair as his own main identity. It uses despair as guidance for humanity. Because of despair. They perfected their own mistake and create hope and this hope again created a despair. But this process of understanding our own mistakes is itself is satisfying and even beautiful just like this world.
      Note:- humanity means our tendency to make a community or save or understand each other. I call it humanity because human are different to animals because of these features. And human are existed because of these features. They created their own loved ones or community or country because of these features.

    I appreciated the looking for flaws, but I don't think I could agree with any mentioned. Episode 10 was one of my favorite episodes, as it brought forth relevant material in relation to Rin specifically and her Father as a father, deepening his character for me a lot. I thought the predictability was in who would die only applied to assassin, and that I think was thematic in it self. Assassin is a representation of hiding in the shadows as Kirei does for the beginning, but his death at the hands of Rider figuratively and literally forces Kirei out of the shadows as a character. It also was a interesting aside for me because it highlighted more than any other fight for me Rider/Alexander as a leader and inspiring of men over coming a unified, yet fractured group (maybe reading in to it too much tho). Lastly, I dont think this story would have lent well to being any longer really, unless you are willing to jump forward into the effects of Zero taking shape in UBW. Yuo seem to dislike UBW, but I personally found just as much narrative depth in it as Zero, just indifferent ways.

    • @Aleczandxr

      The flaws were not any flaws that I personally related to, just ones that others have told me they felt. So I wanted to add them for the sake of balance. I agree with you, none of them bothered me. Rin's episode was fillerish relative to the rest but I still found it relevant and enjoyable. I don't really know why you're talking about Assassin though. I have no problems with him. Like I said, the predictability was fine. It was a thematic design choice of the story that worked for me.
      I don't think you understand what I meant about it being longer. I never wanted it to extend past where it ended. I just would've liked some more episodes in the beginning/middle to flesh out the servants more, since what we got about their backgrounds was minimal at best. (Lancer/Assassin/Caster for example).
      And about UBW, you might think that I didn't like UBW but I really enjoyed it. It was a solid 7/10 show, definitely well done. But I can't agree at all that the anime was as deep or complex and F/Z. Maybe the visual novel was, but the anime.. nah. IMO.

  • @GamerFlair
    @GamerFlair 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think F/Z if one the few stories that really benifits from being a sequel. Regardless of what people ultimately decide the correct order to watch them in is (and I personally feel you should absolutely watch this after at least one of the Stay/Nights, probably UBW imo) it was written after Staynight and that means it basically HAD to be written as a tragedy. It HAD to end in a tragedy because we already knew it did.
    Given that as is written, you already know the majority of your audience know how this is all going to end.. it frees you. You don't need to try and work out a bunch of clever twists and turns. We already know that Kirei is going to betray and kill Tokeomi. We already know that Kirei and Kiritisgu are going to survive, that Irisviel will die, that it will end in a disaster of a great fire. Sakura isn't going to be saved and that pretty much ever Master is almost certainly going to die because why wouldn't that have come back for a second crack if they survived the first.
    So why the hell will anyone watch this? Characters is the answers. The only way you can make anyone care is with the characters. That a general rule anyway, but alot of times people can get away with half assed characters due to an amazing twisting plot, is good going to triumph, will the bad guys manage to win... but we know all this. So you focus on the relationships, so that when the horrible, heartbreaking things we all know are going to happen happen, we are begging for it to be different even though we know we can't.
    If it had been written first, I could imagine it being far less character heavy, because the plot would take precedence as... its actually a pretty damn good plot anyways.

      The visual novels really illustrate how batshit crazy and broken shirou really is. Which is sorely missing from the anime adaptations because there is very little of shirou's inner monologue. In the animes, shirou comes across as more of a goof and we don't really see how pathological his ideals and behavior really are.

    there are some scenes that are just beautiful, transfixing and sad. It's one of those shows that after watching an episode, you just have to push away from the table, stare up at the ceiling, and say, "holy shit, what did i just experience"
    Maiya's death scene probably hit me the hardest. I know she was on screen for, like, two nanoseconds per episode, but after the hotel scene, it never left me for some reason. Even though her role in the story in the story was obvious, and so she was doomed to die from the get go, for some reason this character resonated with some part of my subconscious, and I was still curious to see her development later into the story.

    I thought the same thing about the barrage of information that the ending gives the first time around, but during my second watch I realised that this was a genius move. We get hit with this clusterfuck of a realisation, and the aftermath of what it all means, and are left processing it all while it is happening in real time. Exactly like Kiritsugu. It was another way of highlighting the point of a Greek Tragedy. Sure, when we have taken the time to digest what is going on it is easy to say "I would do X". But in that initial watch, when you are processing it all while it is happening, no one knows how they would have handled it because it is all too much to take in to make a "rational" decision. At least, that's how I view it.

    I don't think the end is "too much information" for a simple reason: it is a prequel. It assumes you have already seen the former (the game, the shows don't give you THE information you need), you should already know what and why happens in the end, you just didn't knew HOW, and so the show focus on this how, not on what or why. It's not a "flaw", it just jumps to the information people didn't already have instead of repeating information that were in the games and scattared along the previous show

It was like he was lost, his mentor was his anchor, and losing her reverted him to the kid that lost everything about a decade before Also, I watched the regular Fate Stay Night and Unlimited Blade Works movie and TV series before this, as I was told to do so by someone who played the visual novels, but I feel that Fate Zero is still a better starting point for all of the anime series.

I hear many describe Iskandar as having no flaws and being kind of a Gary Stu, but while the show does go out of its way to make the audience like him, his faults as a person are made pretty clear. The circumstances of Fate/Zero show Rider in his element and at his most likable, but I suspect if we saw him in other situations we wouldn't really like what we saw.

      +Aleczandxr Maybe an analysis on the Heavens Feel movied once they're out? Id love that because Ive read endlessly on Fate and know a lot. But Ive steered clear of Heavens Feel because Im waiting for the movies.
      From what I can speculate however, Heavens Feel will tackle the consequences of Tokiomis choice in leaving Sakura to the Matous and Kariyas failure in rescuing her.
      Its also gonna touch on the corruption of the Grail by means of Angra Mainyu (Angra Mainyu gets mentioned in Fate Zero when Kiritsugu is inside the Grail and it's in Heavens Feel that it gets fleshed out).
      Heavens Feel will also flesh out Illya (who was largely ignored in UBW and only appeared to remind us she exists and that she dies. Though credit where its due, the Illya episode in UBW was absolutely fantastic) and it will deal with Emiya Shirous ideals. I dont know how it will do this with Archer not being the main Servant in the spotlight but Im intrigued nonetheless
      What Im trying to say is that Ive read the other two route (Fate and UBW) and I still feel like Heavens Feel could be considered to be the ultimate "sequel" or continuation to the tone and events of Fate Zero. Im super excited for Heavens Feel, because Ive grown to love Sakura only due to her past in Fate Zero, despite her barely appearing in the other routes.

    Had Iskandar been a Saber he would have won, and if Gil had been a Saber, it's obvious there wouldn't have been much after the first few episodes.Just knowing Iskandar was screwed by getting summoned into a minor class upsets me a little bit.

    Very good analysis. I totally agree with you on the point that no fan service is a merit of the show... I think that it is needless and many animes would be better off without it.
    That aside, I have to disagree with you on the part that the show can be somewhat predictable.... Yes you can tell which characters are going to make until the end but in my opinion that is actually a good thing. Since the beginning you knew that the final battle (or at least one of the most important one) would be between Kiritsugu and Kirei and THIS makes the battle so epic. The show didn't care about being unpredictable (as it is a prequel) but it tried from the beginning to pave the way for the grand finale.
    Even with this in mind I believe that the last two episodes were kinda unpredictable even for a tragedy and even for a prequel, not because of the ending itself but mostly because of the way it was carried. But just like you, this is my opinion and our impressions can and will differ greatly
    Again, very good analysis

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words, glad you enjoyed! And actually, I agree with what you say about the predictable nature about certain parts of the show. Like I said, the show's beauty isn't in its unpredictability, but in it's brutal inevitability. I only included this in the flaws section because many do consider predictability a flaw, though I personally don't in Fate/Zero's context. I probably should've made that more clear.
      The final two episodes were quite unpredictable, I agree! The predictability comes with the audience being able to sort of gauge which servants are more important than others and thus which will last until the end. Which, like I said before, I don't really consider a flaw, though many do.

    Who is right about kingship? Saber or Rider? :-) I think F/Z's answer is: none of them. Rider is right as a conqueror not as a king. You can't solve the problem of everyone in the end. He is a great conqueror because he gives a purpose to them. He helps their soldiers in their lowest. This is not possible with a king. A king have to sacrifice their people for the better of others.

    First time watcher and didnt know anything about the Fate series just the meme where the subtitle is "People dont die when they are killed" idk I guess thats the studio deen adaptation of fate stay night
    I expect some sort of typical action combat anime where the moral ground good vs evil is set yet it surpassed my expectation and there is no main character here everyone is highlighted on the story (though thats my problem cuz it felt short when they have moments)
    ...watched it yesterday and finished it today. Tbh 1st season did bore me af but the pay off at 2nd season....its just an inevitable tragic story and as a viewer all we can do is merely observe how everything plays out and that makes it more melancholic. 1st season introduced as to characters yet I cannot even root for someone to win the Holy Grail War because their ideals are all flawed in a sense and I guess thats the message..war no matter what ideals you have just leaves everything in devastation. It never and will never be valiant or heroic cause it is purely tragic. U are the hero who won the war but for what cause? It only plants despair to anyone.
    All of this story is fated to end tragically no matter what kind of person u are good or evil, it didnt matter because their tragic fate is sealed. I guess that is why they called it fate huh

    What I didn't like about this show:
    1) The ending
    2) Assassin faking his own death didn't really amount to much.
    The ending is so confusing to watch the first time around that I would be impressed with anyone who understood it with just one watch. I had to watch it like 3 times to understand it.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, very valid flaws. Though, like I said in the analysis, the weak parts of the show were more than compensated for by the strong aspects (tone, atmosphere, characters, character exploration, etc.)

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Okay, but no show should rely on other material for a smooth narrative. And I love Fate/Zero (as you can no doubt tell) but it definitely had some turbulence with the ending for people who weren't familiar with other works.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Not for me, not when the source material is another medium. An anime should stand on it's own. If you watch Fate/Zero and have to go online and do research or go read the visual novel to understand what happened, then the anime hasn't done it's job in that regard.
      If there was an anime that explained Fate/Zero's ending then I wouldn't mind as much but UBW explained nothing and Heaven's Feel isn't out despite F/Z being released 5 years ago.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Fate/Zero really doesn't need that much HF knowledge, just a tiny bit. It really doesn't affect the experience too much. But adapting one third of a story is always going to bring problems until the rest is adapted. It's just not ideal for an anime, that's the nature of Fate. It won't feel complete until all routes are done. (And that's assuming that Ufotable does a great job, which I didn't think they did with UBW).

      If you're talking about the Grail, it's corrupted. It seeks destruction and that's the reason why it will try to grant the wish but twist it in a way that brings the most destruction.
      If you're talking about why Gilgamesh and Kirei survived and "won" the war, its due to Kiritsugu rejecting the Holy Grail and therefore no wish was granted. Therefore, it granted Kirei which was convenient as he too is actually sadistic and seeks destruction. That's the reason why the Holy Grail destroyed everything in its path as it was Kirei's hidden desire to destroy. As to why Gilgamesh survived and didn't return to the realm of the Throne Of Heroes, he came into contact with the Holy Grail, which was the liquid spouting from the hole.
      You might need to delve into the lore, which is Nasuverse to really understand everything. The reason why the Grail was corrupted is because of a certain Heroic Spirit inside of it. He's a totally different class and he practically bears all the world's evil within him.
      You might wanna go on reddit and the wiki to learn more or you can read the novels.

Kara no Kyoukai! but make sure you have enought time to see all 7 movies at onece, for that thing doesn't let go till end. it was first work by fate's original creator, kinoko nasu and produced by ufotable. the origianl novel very complex, adaptation made it ligher and more spectacular. but it was start to super muddled nasuverse with all akashas, gaias, alayas and conter force etc..

    Could you maybe do a video on how Sabre develops through the entirety of Fate and how Shirou is sort of an answer to her ideals? He chooses to continue through the pain of excessively perfect ideals with some degree of expectation, and I think that ends up inspiring Sabre to continue largely as she was, but with a slight caveat to understand not everyone will benefit perfectly from her ideals. I think references to UBW Archer, Kiritsugu, and Berserker would all be useful. I am not tracking how Mordred (sp?) has been portrayed, but she could also be relevant.

      Unfortunately I’m not interested in making a video about that. Sorry!

      Don't know it man, sorry. This video was done before I started including the songs in the description and I couldn't find it in my library. I think I got it off a medley.
