Again, a very helpful video with easy to follow instructions. I set this up, first just copying data over the network, then the sync. When I added a file (a movie), it took until the next day to copy over. The NASes were doing whatever they do to compare files, 20,000+. Thanks for this. I've got my dinky two bay backing up to another dinky two bay. Hypothetically, if I upgraded to a 6 bay later on, could I use this method to migrate all my data over first?
Hi. Thanks for the video. Is it not clear to me the difference between "Synology Drive" and "Cloud Station ShareSync"; both allow to keep synchronized two NAS. Thanks
Hi @SpaceRex, thanks for the educational video. I am curious how you think about Drive ShareSync and Snapshot Replication. Since Drive ShareSync has versioning, is there any point to add Snapshot Replication to the team folder on the local NAS as well?
So I actually don't use the Synology Drive versions as it causes the database to be huge. Instead I just use snapshots. They actually use the same technology under the hood, but the way drive does it requires a database to associate snapshots to files, which gets big and slow
After watching your youtube tutorial, i managed to keep Multiple Synology at different locations. I intend to go and stay at different location for few months, and planning to bring one of my NAS to keep with me. But to bring the 4 Drives Bay is quite heavy and troublesome, can you recommend, 2 Bay NAS server, which is suitable to keep as Drive Sync.
I don't understand how to set up options other than Quickconnect ID. Quickconnect is super slow. Where did you get domain name? Is there any other tutorials how to do it. I think it is the most tutorial worthy part.
If I have 2 office, office A is the Headquarter and office B is the remote office. do I have to create to 2 username for 1 person to access the Synology drive? Or just user give from the headquarter office?
Hello! When having 3 or more NAS it runs an error ""The folder has already been occupied by another sync task. Please select another folder"" and I do not want to have multiple shared folders, just all the sharesync inside the same solder inside the team folder. ¿its possible?
hi ! i have done the exact same thing but my speed sync is about 200ko/s... it's much faster on my Mac using Synology Drive Client. do you know how can I fix it ?
I'm thinking about getting a second synology to have at home just for backup, is this the best method? It seems to me it is since I will always have the same data in 2 different locations... Do you recommend this for and off-site backup?
This is a fantastic tutorial,i was apprehensive of moving to DSM 7 but using this tutorial has been very helpful,I noticed that cloud sync was removed from DSM 7 and that Drive was added (which also was in DSM 6.2, but if it works don’t fix it) while not ideal for a backup because i have 2 different servers running 2 different file system’s Hyperback up was not an option for me,so what i did using this tutorial was install Drive on both 6.2 systems then upgraded the backup server to DSM 7 and after it was all up and running ,i then installed DSM 7 on the main server, with around 48tb of data I cannot afford to just throw caution to the wind and hope it all works
I have a one NAS that won't upgrade to DSM 7 (DS115). My backup NAS will. Are you saying the synology drive app was still able to work across locations even though the drives were on different versions?
Just went thru it all and it worked perfectly. Thank you very much. I'm not that great with computers either so you must have explained it well for me to understand! I do have one question. After going thru the video and successfully syncing one shared folder between two NAS servers, I later decided to try to sync another folder. I went to the Drive Admin Console, Enabled the new folder I want to also sync under Team Folders, then went to Drive ShareSync to Enable it there as a Synced Folder but the new folder does not appear to be able to tick enable. Is there a way to refresh the synced Folder List on ShareSync? I even turned the NAS off/on and still nothing?
Hello .. nice video ... Could you help me to find a way to sync folders or files between 2 different NAS drives - Synology and Asustor on the same local network. The tutorial here is for the same NAS drives, Synology with the same DSM and software but I want to do the same thing with different NAS drives maybe via rsync services or other way. What I want to achieve is to have same folder in different NAS drives and when I modified one file or folder instant to have same modification on the other NAS. Could be possible to do this ? Thank you in advance 👍and keep up the good work 👏
To avoid the complexity of a VPN and the vulnerability of port forwarding on the router, could you use something like OneDrive as the central data point that the other NAS's sync to ?
hi, i'm using the Synology shared folder sync (rsync) feature, which does almost similar to this (Synology Drive Sync). May i know which backup option is better?
Thank you for this content! I do have a question regarding the 2 way sync. How does synology manage changing a synced file from both sides? ex. if remote side changes a word doc while the local side is changing the same file. Is it based on who is first? I can see this as being problematic. Thank you.
They actually keep both versions and rename them based on the time they were edited to allow you to manually resolve the conflicts. See here: kb.synology.com/en-global/DSM/tutorial/Synology_Drive_file_conflict_resolution
thank a lot this video help me and solve my questions. But i have one quick simple question. E.g if i have one server in A country (main) and have B in other country, and i am in B country. so B server will be faster for me since B server is in same country right? But how would i connect to B server? Make new DDNS? Or quickconnect? VPNserver? Or since they copied same files and synced each other, doesnt really matter and use the main (A country) server in B country?
I've tried this over and over again, but I seem to be falling foul of the port forwarding part.. it's a bit technically beyond me. One NAS is at home, the other at work. I synched them easily when they were both at work, but the QuickConnect just isn't working for me.. They're both connected to Ubiquiti Unifoir switches and then to the internet. Any advice very much appreciated!
Great video! So clear and concise. One thing, however, that confused me was why did the test file delete instantly when you had set up a 30 day versioning policy? I would have expected it to remain, no?
I got sharesync up and running for syncing between office pc, home pc, and office nas. Howrver i had to give it up due to two issues with hardcoded sync rules (1. SYSTEM attribute files/folders wont sync. 2. Path lengts limited to 255 characters). Im thinking of installing nextcloud on the synology NAS. Do you think its worth a try?
My plan is to use Synology Drive to replicate the "Active Backup for Google Workspace" backup repository to a second Synology unit. However, after installing "Synology Drive for Server" on both units I'm unable to add the "ActiveBackupforBusiness" folder as a "Team Folder" and so I'm unable to replicate that data. Is there some alternative way to replicate the "Active Backup for Google Workspace" backup repository to a second Synology NAS unit? Is snapshot replication the best way to replicate "Active Backup for Business" data to a second Synology?
I have two Synology NAS already that are currently syncing overnight with the stock Synology rsync. Can I put this in place to essentially overwrite that functionality without losing data? Or will this basically require me starting fresh?
You should be able to drop this in place. I would take a snapshot on both ends before hand as a “just in case” but if the folders are named the same, drive will sync the two of them
Hi, I urgently need some help.. The situation is have is that i have a Main NAS at home but in the office i realise everytime when need to work on the files, i use Synology Drive server, it will need to download and its quite troublesome, so im thinking of setting another NAS in the co working space which i have a private office that comes with a LAN port. is it possible for me to set a remote NAS in a co working space? can i just plug the remote NAS into LAN port available and do the sharesync set up? the LAN port is connected to a network switch and it does give me internet connection.
Thanks SpaceRex, I have learned so much from all of your videos. One question I have for you is what approach would you use with 4 devices and one data pool, one office location? I understand the 3-2-1 rule and will follow that, but in the past I've used older NAS devices (different company) and due to multiple failures needed to have a complete redundant copy. I didn't trust the system stability and had no trust for data recovery. Twice a simple system power cycle would lose the volume info and would take days to rebuild to get to the data. For this set up I had 3 identical copies, two onsite and one offsite. This didn't support snapshot, so I was open to many different types of problems. For the 4 synology NAS devices, I had envisioned setting up two devices at two locations and having the 3-2-1 rule and use the 4th as a clone in the event of system failure. With complete sync between two "main" devices, only be down for a matter of minutes. I would be able to swap in the sync'd NAS and be back up immediately. Would you advise this approach and where would you house the 4th device, likely on the same network as the main NAS as the speed between would be much faster? Or do you have a different suggestion? Thank so much for the advice and tutorials!
So the way that I have set this up in the past for companies is having the main office have two identical NAS units with the primary unit sending BTRFS snapshots every 5 or 15 min to the secondary unit. Then having the main unit also sending a hyper backup to an offsite NAS for disaster recovery. With this setup we have been able to have the main NAS totally go down and be back up in running within about 5 - 10 min (doing a fail over on the second office NAS and changing over the DNS address for the primary FS and only loosing the past 5 min of data) then you have the offsite for full disaster recovery. If you really did want to have a forth unit you could set it up to sync via drive or snapshot replication and be stored offsite as a unit you could bring in and have everyone up and running instantly (if somehow both office units were destroyed)
This is incredible. I have a WD Cloud device at my office and they are no longer supporting the current software, so I am researching replacement devices. I'm thinking of getting 2 DS920+ devices for home and office so they will be synchronized, since I do a lot of work at home. Thanks very much for the excellent tutorial.
Hi @SpaceRex, thank you for the video. I configured two NAS with Synology Drive ShareSync: the first, one DS1517+ with DSM 6.2.4-25556, and the remote, one DS1520+ with DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 2. Once I've set the team folder to sync, the process has started, that has take long time because the 1517 had >5TB of data. After a couple of day, the sync was complete. Then I see this problem: if I create a file on the DS1520 (client one) the sync is quite immediate, with the replication of the file on the DS1517. Otherwise, if I make any change from the DS1517, there is NO propagation on the DS1520... even still waiting or rebooting this NAS... Do you have any suggestion or something that may help me? Thanks.
Hey @SpaceRex, Thank you so much for your content. Super helpful and great stuff really. I have a small question. I set up a DS720+ thanks to your guides, but now, I have 2 of them and I am not sure if its a good idea to have 2 drives on a same network, I want to expand my storage with the second unit. Is it a good idea to set up the second one rather than investing on new Hard Drives on the existing units?
If only there was a way to schedule syncs this would be perfect. I would love to use this for an offsite replication but would love a window of opportunity in case the original NAS was hit by ransomware or corruption.. If this exists please let me know. Thanks again for all your great content!
So that question comes up all the time. But email (in my option) is the one service that you should not host yourself. Email is just too important for businesses and very cumbersome to setup & make sure you are not getting sent to spam.
Dear @SpaceRex, Thank you for all the good video's, this one especially helped to create a 1:1 copy from a 4 bay raid10 to a 2 bay raid0 nas. I do have a question about it though, as it is not a priority to access the files asap for me, but it is used as a secuirity backup over the (somewhat slow) upload and download speeds of two ISP''s, what would be my best option to time manage the syncing of the files and folders. As I undersdant, "Drive ShareSync" doesn't have a time based setup. Keep up the good work, you are helping a lot of people securing their data, personal and busnisses alike.
I have constant problems with Drive Sync. Whenever I rename a file, almost 100% of the time the remote downloads a copy of the file under the new name, but does not delete the original. This is a nightmare to manage so I recently stopped using it :(
@@SpaceRexWill Drive Share Sync. It also sometimes just ignores deleted altogether. It's something I struggled with for over a year before giving up last week.
Thank you for your videos. Learning more each time. Regarding the files being open on two places in the same time, at my previous job which was a huge corporate setting with their own servers, IT made the configuration that, when file is open, other side will see the message that file is temporary in use and they won't be able to edit the file at that time. They had option to re-save the file and work on them as a new file, wich worked great with document templates. I assume there's some similar settings in the Synology drive sync. Or at least as how MS one drive has that you can see when the other user is editing the file. If not, hope Synology will work on the solution. Some kind of notification that file is currently open and under edit by another user. Also, regarding the "hmmm" situation of being cautious, when I first started with this I needed quite some time to figure, "hey, it's me!" 😂🤣. Not all of us is tech savvy LOL
This is actually completely unusable for businesses! You did not even mention permissions, they are NOT replicated to the 2nd NAS. Without any permission syncronisation, just forget about it except for home use.

Thanks for this. I've got my dinky two bay backing up to another dinky two bay. Hypothetically, if I upgraded to a 6 bay later on, could I use this method to migrate all my data over first?
I actually like to use snapshot replication for this when upgrading clients
Hi. Thanks for the video. Is it not clear to me the difference between "Synology Drive" and "Cloud Station ShareSync"; both allow to keep synchronized two NAS. Thanks
Cloud station is deprecated. I would use drive
Hi @SpaceRex, thanks for the educational video. I am curious how you think about Drive ShareSync and Snapshot Replication. Since Drive ShareSync has versioning, is there any point to add Snapshot Replication to the team folder on the local NAS as well?
I had the same thought on this. I have replication so I disabled versioning. I didn't want copies of copies of copies.
@rexdex
Thank you for this Video! You really did help me out
I'm thinking about getting a second synology to have at home just for backup, is this the best method?
What if you want to sync the entire Synology Photos App with all it's configuration and thumbs etc. between two locations?
You cannot as far as I am aware
which port i should forward? i tried only forward 6690, it only work on small size file, anything more then 2mb, never complete
Hi. I have a DS112+. Is it possible it does not work on this NAS? I can not find Synology Drive (to download).
Worked it out. You need to add the new shared folder on the destination server then it shows up on the source server under Drive ShareSync.
Hello .. nice video ...
I am not sure if drive allows you to do this. That used to work with Cloud Sync, but I think that was removed in DSM7
It is not clear for me if I can use the drive to sync both NAS and make the user connect to the near Synology and how to make it.
hi, i'm using the Synology shared folder sync (rsync) feature, which does almost similar to this (Synology Drive Sync). May i know which backup option is better?
rsync is one way, Synology Drive sync is 2 way (better in my opinion)
The file is still in the synology, but not in the file view. It’s stored in previous versions which is in the web app
@@SpaceRexWill makes perfect sense. Thanks so much!
Thank you Will! Request! More synology photos content would be fantastic ☺️
Will Look into it! Anything specific?
Hey guys. When im connecting via Quickconnect i got super slow sync speed. Can anyone help me?
Thank you, it is very helpful! 🙏🏻
Excellent video. Are you able to sync a folder between three or more different NAS units? I'm hoping it isn't only limited to a two NAS setup.
Yes. You run Synology Drive ShareSync on the NAS you want to be synchronized. and you copy from the "master" NAS
Love it! Thanks a million!!! Completed my setup without a hitch.
Should ShareSync run on the "main" NAS or if files are already on both does it matter? Just curious, thanks!
I would run it on the more powerful NAS as it’s the one who will take more processing power (doesn’t matter too nuch)
@@SpaceRexWill Thanks, appreciate the quick response.
I have two Synology NAS already that are currently syncing overnight with the stock Synology rsync. Can I put this in place to essentially overwrite that functionality without losing data? Or will this basically require me starting fresh?
You should be able to drop this in place. I would take a snapshot on both ends before hand as a “just in case” but if the folders are named the same, drive will sync the two of them
@@SpaceRexWill Awesome, thanks!
Yes you will be able to do that! It just cannot be the ‘master’ server. Only the one that is syncing
Does setting up Synology Drive consume more CPU and/or memory on the NAS?
Yes it does
This is incredible. I have a WD Cloud device at my office and they are no longer supporting the current software, so I am researching replacement devices. I'm thinking of getting 2 DS920+ devices for home and office so they will be synchronized, since I do a lot of work at home. Thanks very much for the excellent tutorial.
Glad you like it!
@@SpaceRexWill Just ordered 2 devices and 8 drives. Can't wait to set them up.
Thanks.
Why is mine asking for a one time passcode?
Sounds like you turned on 2 factor auth
great tutorial!!!!
so slow over Quickconnect... Thanks again for a fab tutorial
It tends to be a pain in most cases to have two NAS units unless you have a need for them. I would just sell them and get a big 5 by instead
@@SpaceRexWill Thank you so much. Took your advice and selling the second unit now :)
If only there was a way to schedule syncs this would be perfect. I would love to use this for an offsite replication but would love a window of opportunity in case the original NAS was hit by ransomware or corruption.. If this exists please let me know. Thanks again for all your great content!
If you are worried about ransomware or corruption then you can just put snapshots on both systems and be able to undo either one
@@SpaceRexWill Can I do both Drive Sync & Snapshots? I'm working with over 50TB of data... :(
Yes you can! Checkout my video on snapshots, then are lightweight and do not get in the way
Amazing content. Any thoughts about making a video teaching how to use our nas to manage our personal email with our personal domain (not synology)?
So that question comes up all the time. But email (in my option) is the one service that you should not host yourself. Email is just too important for businesses and very cumbersome to setup & make sure you are not getting sent to spam.
Dear @SpaceRex,
Thank you for all the good video's, this one especially helped to create a 1:1 copy from a 4 bay raid10 to a 2 bay raid0 nas.
This is a nightmare to manage so I recently stopped using it :(
Is this drive sync or Cloud sync? I have never seen this on drive sync before
@@SpaceRexWill Drive Share Sync. It also sometimes just ignores deleted altogether. It's something I struggled with for over a year before giving up last week.
Hi bro.. I have Synology 718+ can i sync my Synology NAS with any other brand nas like Seagate Central NAS..?
I would look at using something like Syncthing for that
@@SpaceRexWill Thanks for your Reply.
so am planning is with my Synology 718+ can I use Synology ds120j 1bay only for sync backup use...
A very helpful video , but don't forget, max. file size for sync is 10 GB.
Does drive sync have this limit?
I let my son-in-law Install his 415 + NSA backup at my house, I have exceeded my bandwidth for the first time would this NSA cause the problem.
Yes most likely
If you cant sync, make sure you port forwarded 6690 on your WIFI router to be visible on internet. You should said that in the video
ShareSync needs to be able to support more than 500k files. I'm syncing easily 2M+
This is actually completely unusable for businesses! You did not even mention permissions, they are NOT replicated to the 2nd NAS. Without any permission syncronisation, just forget about it except for home use.
Incredible, it is true, is there a solution?
Why do you keep saying go ahead?
