Right!? I am in the middle of nowhere Midwest and even I know about her zombie toe pads! 😂 To be fair, I do dance but started as an adult so no where near the level she is.
Maya's undead toe pads are the ballet equivalent of using a (clarinet) reed until it's green and chipped af. It looks like hell, but it works PERFECTLY, aside from people around you being abhorred
Over a year ago I said that I would throw that reed away after the concert. Last week I used it auditioning for an orchestra 😭 I tried finding a new one but they were all bad. Gotta buy more
Maya's TOE pads are SINGULAR. they're only for her second toe. it finally makes sense. and i am amazed that the algorithm brought that short to me before you saw it!
It's called Morton's Toe, where the second toe is longer than the big toe. It is prone to callousing. Yes, Maya is doing what she feels is right for her feet. My feet are the same.
Yeahhh, it has to a superstition-type thing now. I get it though! I have an old cravat for horse shows that, while it is no longer fit to be worn as intended, HAS to be on my body somewhere when I'm in the ring. Or something bad might happen.
' dont forget to breathe ' is my teachers favourite thing to say when we stretch or do a warmup ( an intense one at that) or do turns and im like ' i have to pull up, engage my core, stay on my axis and you expect to BREATHE ??? '
mayas toe pads are actually genius because as her feet get stronger, her toe pads wear down more and allow her to fully transition to no toe pads lol but it's also probably psychological
Regarding dancer hype: One of my most treasured memories that makes me feel good about the world was a time when I was working security at a cheer competition. The music cut out in the middle of one team’s routine and they were allowed to restart. But then it cut out the second time as well and they decided to keep going, so all the other teams started shouting out their eight counts for them. They could have so easily decided to laugh or boo or try to throw off their timing or even just do nothing - after all, they were in literal competition with each other! - but the entire arena decided to be kind and helpful. It’s been almost ten years, and it still warms my heart every time I remember it.
Maya and her enchanted toe pads are not to be trifled with! She's the most amazingly talented, gracefully gifted, beautifully elegant dancer, that even possess the ability to float through the air, as if gravity is nothing! Maya is amazing, janky toe pads and all! Love Maya, she's definitely a Prima Ballerina! 🩰
😄 My daughter would totally understand the dancer with the very worn toe pads. She was a volleyball player with very worn knee pads. Tried buying her new ones. She hated them. Wouldn’t use them. She liked her “broken in” nasty ones. Not even her coach could get her to give them up.
When I took my yoga teacher training I learned that a decent percentage of the population has gene that causes joint hypertension and stretchier skin. I also learned that it’s more likely for those people to have lifelong injuries because they don’t feel pain upon hyperextension so over time their joints give out after being hyperextended so many times. I hope that girl from the second video finds her balance before her joints fight back. 😅
There is a gene, but hypermobility can be caused by autoimmune disease as well. I've got Hashimoto's and dislocated my kneecap in high school because I've got hypermobile joints.
Something I constantly catch myself doing in class is during combinations I'm constantly biting my lips because I'm so focused but forgetting to breathe. Also idk why but in class or at rehearsals it always feels awkward to smile but during the performance it's so easy to smile.
Maya might benefit from trying making GB her own pads out of socks. You can use as thick or thin a sock as feels good for you but even a really thin sock would be a layer of protection from rubbing and blistering.
When I just started Ballet I was four and we had a little boy in class who didn’t participate in all exercises we did, but all girls loved him he literally was surrounded by like 12 girls who all wanted him for themselves, he was like two or three. Not sure what happened to him but I can still remember him so vividly and I’m sure everyone else from my beginner classes back then still remembers him as well because we all loved him like he was our little brother 😂
My ballet tights, leotards, & shoes live in a bin in my closet. 😂 My first pointe shoes were Bloch Soloists. My current ones are Bloch Heritage. Eva Nys has done awesome phot shoots with dancers. Her current series is horror-themed for Halloween & is really different!
I kept a pair of Pointe shoes for 15 years and then I finally let them go in a moving sale. I switched to training and showing my horse in Dressage. Which is ballet for horses. I had to train my turnout to turn in. It took three years.😂
Ha! I had to give up ballet when I got my first horse at 10 years old. I think the ballet helped a lot with my core strength and seat!! Recently had foot surgery after a combination of injuries to my foot/ankle. Hope I'll be able to ride soon!!
Omgosh I totally relate to the things in a dancer's closet. I have leotards and ballet slippers that I haven't worn in over 20 years now. Mostly because I stopped dancing after a car accident. I guess I always hoped that maybe someday I would dance again. Then I got busy having kids. It might be time to pull everything out of storage and see if anything still fits. I might need differnt shoes though as the accident messed up one of my feet.
That’s a good idea but she is like so perfect and aligned already. I feel like she has already got the perfect shoe for her? I’m just an adult restarter/beginner so I have no clue though lol. She probably has like a ritual and has to wear the same shoes and breaks them in the same way etc and would be to superstitions to get new shoes is my guess
My first pair of pointe shoes (1989, or thereabouts) were Capezio Infinitas (the first softer shank Capezio model I believe) and I still have them along with a few other special pairs. Back then we had to use lambswool to wrap our toes to make "custom" toe pads. Shortly thereafter lambswool toe pads came out but they were too thick until after they compressed and molded to your foot. Then gel toe pads came out, and I liked those better because the part under the toes was flat and so they provided padding where it was needed but you could feel the floor and articulate your toes better. I never got a great fit for my pointe shoes but my favorites were eventually Repettos that I 3/4 shanked myself.
I'm not a dancer by any means but I love these educational reaction videos. Also, I don't know if this is a thing anywhere, but if you have a ton of old leotards, why don't you do a scrapbook of a photo of each leo and a brief description of when you performed in it, and then donate the leos to a dance studio so that the dancers that cant afford brand new leotards have something to wear for competitions. Like the studio could rent them out to the dancers and the funds stay secured and then the funds from the renting of leotards go toward the student when they leave the studio, like for college, or going to summer intensives, something. Just an idea.
3:17 , this is crazy true, I haven’t done ballet for a decade and I only did it for about 6-7 years but I still stand in first or fourth, or with my leg extended and toe pointed, cause all my friends never did dance or things similar they make fun of me for it and I’ve low-key become self conscious, but it’s 100% unconscious it’s just comfortable.
lol ex dancer here.. stopped ballet at 12 and dance team at 17 (I’m 32 now). When I go to the gym, specially if I’m doing squats, I’ll be at the squat rack with my leg on the safety bar stretching like a ballet barre. Reminds me of the one stretching like that too.
Me who never done ballet or dance in general, sees Josie uploaded: Happy happy happy... Also, I really do just appreciate ballet as an art form and ballet dancers make such good references for art studies especially to study leg muscles.
Awwww, that's really sweet of you to do that!! My Mom had a piece of silk upon which she had hand-embroidered my full name in elaborate script, (having only just learned these skills), and then had sewn this onto my baby blanket. I imagine her as a young woman making all sorts of things for me, her first baby, and becoming increasingly excited as my arrival drew near! She was gifted with this ability and she made all kinds of dresses et cet. for me. She really was amazing in sewing, needlework, knitting, lace-making, cross-stitch, embroidery ~ all that kind of stuff I can't do! Lol It goes without saying that I still have that ever so soft baby blanket and a baby-sized (approx. 7''- 9''), knitted, stuffed doll that she made which was a piglet. It was just the right size for a new-born to a one year old to hold comfortably. I named it "Tumble" and in the interest of brevity, I'll skip the story about how she got her name. I decided that Tumble was a piglette, (a female), even before I was first able to speak. She now stays warm, wrapped up and secure in my baby blanket and I will keep these both in a safe place with me forever!! If you still have your Mom ad Dad (and/or siblings), in your life and you love them, try to tell them how much they mean to you and how you love them and appreciate all the things they've done for you, every day. This goes for friends, too. You'll never know when that chance to tell them will disappear, so tell them, as often as you possibly can, what is in your heart and how deeply you love them, and let them know why you love them so!!! Even when it's after terrible fight, never let them go without making sure that they know how much you love them and what they mean to you!!! Be Well!
@@Unknownentityfeline I love your reply 💕 I actually have one baby blanket that my grandma made that is a Winnie the Pooh quilt and the one that is basically all shreds in a pillow case tied up lol Some people think it’s weird or gross, I wash them don’t worry haha
@@mariethelaw Awww, that's so sweet. No, you must keep things that mean so much to you because they represent so much from your life. The love your Grandma had for you, the new and long-anticipated addition to her family, just think of how happy everyone was about you, and you didn't have to do anything but exist ! Ha-ha! Well, eat, sleep, pee, poop. Lol!! As for keeping it, after many years, it will become too delicate to wash, in the normal sense. You might do more damage than good. My Tumble could disintegrate! So I just leave her as is, she has faded, survived two fires, been lost and then found after one, come close to being thrown away by my brother! She's been through a lot, we both have, but now she's in my "fire bag", safe where I can grab the bag in case of fire or idk whatever might cause me to have to leave in a moment's notice. I advise the same, for you for all you're importent papers and keepsakes, btw. I know you're not asking, but you're like me in that we both value these items in our lives and our hearts will always belong to the times, the memories that they evoke. And so, they are precious to us because they mean so much, they carry so much for us. And more so because someone who loved us took the time out of their own lives to think about us, and spend the time making something for us with their very own hands. Your Winnie-the-Pooh blankie came from, grandma's hands, directed by her thoughts under a desire for your happiness and security, warmth and knowing that you are loved, which came from a wish (to make a gift for you from her), that she had in her soul. How could you not keep it?? I'm glad you did, and I hope you will, forever!!! 💞 p.s. You apper to be Asian. I'm half Asian and your story about your Grandma had me picturing someone like my great-grandma, who lived 98 years on this planet, lovingly making the blanket for you, checking everything to make sure it was just right! Grandmother's and great-grandmother's are precious in their own right, sweet and cute, mothers have a unique role of being closer and giving intimate and immediate guidance and support. In short, family is key and I pray that each of us can have a good and stable one. For those who don't, my heart goes out to you, each and every one. And ultimately we are all family. 💜💜💜💜💜
I will be 62 in a week. I have all my pointe shoes. all of them even the ones falling apart, lol. I have found out that the older you get the more you will hold on to memories that you can hold.
Am I not alone🥹? At 50 yo, after years of severe inner pelvic issues and a hysterectomy, my brain still struggles to execute perfectly that weird step called "neutral walk". It would be way easier for me to moonwalk or egyptian-walk, not kidding🤷🏻♀️. Take care.
Omg the first dancer with the band on, made my ankles hurt lol. When my parents were moving my Mom said I have something for you. It was a box of all my dance recital clothes my first ballet shoes and first and last tap shoes. It was a hot mess in that box, I had quite dancing when a junior in high school. I graduated almost 40 years ago lol.😆😆
Question for Josephine! Also anyone else who knows anything about Sansha pointe shoes Josephine do you ever use Sansha shoes in fitting? I might need to schedule another virtual with you. I have a slight Sansha free pointe shoe with purchase from Sansha NY online hoarding problem 🙈 I had a follow up virtual fitting with you yesterday. I’m the one that was an early morning appointment and I said I felt like Cinderella in the shoes and that the heel stays on even without elastic! . It’s mind blowing you have this amazing ability and gift to know what shoes people need. Thank you so much again! I was feeling discouraged and down before and I want to let you know you have helped me persevere and gain back my confidence. So back to the Sansha brand 😅😅😅 I have a confession 🙈😅 I have so many Sansha shoes they sent me for free for spending over 90 dollars. Also for a few days they maybe made a mistake or it was super overstock they had ovation 3/4 and legende and others for $3!!!! Foolishly I was like “oh that’s basically free” in my mind 😂 Well they have no descriptions on the website and I’m not experienced enough to know exactly what I need by looking at the photos on their site. Also I always write in the box for instructions about the free pointe shoes and let them know what I need and they do get close but they just aren’t fitting right So of course none work for me 😂 some are close but also a few are like 2 sizes too big or more. Etudes, Esmeralda, Legende, Carola and some more I’m forgetting. now I have like 7 pairs of Sansha pointe shoes none of them fit properly maybe one or two kinda work but not as well as the ones you got me in so I have them carefully stored in my closet. I always tell the store what I need when I get to the notes for the free pair of pointe shoes and it’s always so so close but like baggy in the heel or too big lengthwise or the box isn’t right like too big or the vamp is too long or short even It is sooooo hard to say no to free pointe shoes when I can get them free 🤦♀️ I have this crazy idea I will get a local tailor to make them perfect for me Or that I will learn to sew well enough to get them to work. Like shorten the end and make the heel less baggy etc Is it possible to alter Sansha shoes with sewing and make them fit me 😅 Please tell me this isn’t possible so I go ahead and sell them for like a few bucks plus shipping or give them away and get it over with lol. Hope you are having a good day! Thank you again
My first pointe shoes (aged 50) were Gaynor Mindens because nobody at Grishko or Capezio in NYC had shoes that fit me. The GMs weren't quite right either and the next year, I went back and they sold me another pair just a bit bigger that were even worse. A couple of years later my teacher took me to an Energetiks store near me, and they sold me an Energetiks pair but then lockdown happened and I haven't done pointe work since 😢. I sold both pairs of GMs online though.
First pointe shoes: Capezio Pavolovas. Philosophy at the time (1993) was to give beginners the hardest shank possible so they had to work their feet harder. Same philosophy with slippers- we weren't allowed to wear split soles at my studio.
UGH I had Pavlovas too (1991). What a stupid thing to give new dancers. Never mind the lack of toe pads, spacers, etc., the shoes themselves were nightmare fuel.
I started in Pavlovas as well, in 1991. I don't know how I squeezed my metatarsals in there! We used lambswool back then, no toe pads. It was so hard to get the right coverage!
I still have my pointe shoes from my teens (back in the 1960's). Dance classes were thru the local rec council so, fun dance classes, but not on a level for anyone with professional aspirations. Every once in a while I pull'em out of storage and yep, I can still get into them at 73. And then my knees (especially the one I had a TKR in last fall) tells me to get down on flat feet. those dance classes were so much fun.
The first pair were Gamba, back in the '70s. Toe pads didn't exist, we had the joys of lamb's wool (which did nothing). The shoes were horrible, looked horrible, were very uncomfortable. My next pair were Freed's which had nice long wings and looked gorgeous. I'd like to say happy memories, but they probably weren't! 😁
I kept all my old dance stuff, cause I only had to quit ballet due to time constraints... when I finally got into classes again half of the elastics had become britle XD
I had to say goodbye to some of my point shoes because our basement flooded and some were at the bottom of the wooden box with my dance and theatre stuff and got soaked 😢 Luckily my tutus where vacuum sealed and saved everything else ❤❤ (I haven't done ballet in 12 years but I still have everything)
Turns yes, pirrouettes, no. She is a fabulous turner, but the videos of her doing infinite turns are usually a mix of many types of turns. I really hope this came accrost kindly. I never mean anything rudly, and I am not the best at communicating myself @@ilznidiotic
My first shoes were actually very poorly fitted bloch's european balance, and the first pair that I actually was dancing in were grishko novices, I'ver had 2 pairs and rn I'm in fr duvals pro extra strong haha
Your videos make me happy. You are so sweet and cheerful. I wold love to have been a ballerina. But at 66, I think I’ve passed the point of no return lol,
I've still got my army cadets boots, toe cap bulled. They are too small and they got trapped next to a radiator for a few months, so the soles are melted and soft now. So they are use less for what I put them through when I was a cadet now. Still they're proudly displayed with my Irish Guards beret and corporal rankslide. Those were good times. And I preferred my old holey cloth for bulling my boots, and the applicator brush that was packed solid with old boot polish. Sitting down to bull my boots on a Wednesday afternoon was so therapeutic.
Maya’s zombified toe pad is a meme at this point. The moment she gets new ones is going to be a huge moment.
They got her new ones at one point and she just didn't use them
@sadmac356 yeah, maybe she tried them but I doubt she prefers them to her gorgeous toe pads
I pray for mayas toe pad nightly
Would be a huge moment. But I have a feeling it's not going to happen
It's just a literal toe pad, like just for the 1 toe.
On another note, I know nothing about Ballet but I still know about Maya’s legendary toe pads.
Yes. Me too!
Those toe pads are legendary!!
Same here 👁👁👍
Same 🤣 I saw it in three part, when it was still wearable, when it's started to deteriorate up to the point where it's literally strings.
My saxophone reed is going through hell let’s just say, and I don’t even wear toe pads lmao
They turn GREEN???
@@stardown223i thought it was moldy when green
Over a year ago I said that I would throw that reed away after the concert. Last week I used it auditioning for an orchestra 😭 I tried finding a new one but they were all bad. Gotta buy more
I'm sorry who is out here keeping green reeds?! Back when I played they'd splinter and I'd change soon after.

She actually has had her videos on before. Eva was the top comment on the video she was in.
I love Eva's videos!
Maya is iconic at this point.
She's amazing! ❤
It's definitely psychological for her. She says she'll "never" change them. Lol
She probably won’t 😆 She might just stop wearing toe pads once they are gone entirely
I once met someone who liked their normal socks dead (see through on the heel) and would literally buy her brother new socks just to get his old ones
Yeahhh, it has to a superstition-type thing now. I get it though! I have an old cravat for horse shows that, while it is no longer fit to be worn as intended, HAS to be on my body somewhere when I'm in the ring. Or something bad might happen.
IT'S ABOUT TIME SHE TALKED ABOUT MAYA'S TOE PADS!! 🤣
Yes!!
I feel like Maya’s zombie toe pads have become iconic 😆 And I feel like the day Maya buys new toe pads for herself it will break the internet 😂
I'm so glad you explained the dancer logic behind the zombie toe pads.

Be Well!
@@Unknownentityfeline I love your reply 💕 I actually have one baby blanket that my grandma made that is a Winnie the Pooh quilt and the one that is basically all shreds in a pillow case tied up lol
Some people think it’s weird or gross, I wash them don’t worry haha
I’m doing my first dance on point for THE first time I’m so happy and I’m a little nervous and also excited
I absolutely LOVE Josephine.
I spent years after ballet unlearning my turned-out everyday walk, because it gave me hip issues. But yes, people could spot it a mile away. 😂
Take care.
Eva’s page is amazing. I have never danced ballet, and Maya’s toe pads video came up in my feed….😂😂😂😂😂
Also anyone else who knows anything about Sansha pointe shoes
Josephine do you ever use Sansha shoes in fitting? I might need to schedule another virtual with you. I have a slight Sansha free pointe shoe with purchase from Sansha NY online hoarding problem 🙈
I had a follow up virtual fitting with you yesterday.
So back to the Sansha brand 😅😅😅
I have a confession 🙈😅 I have so many Sansha shoes they sent me for free for spending over 90 dollars.
Also for a few days they maybe made a mistake or it was super overstock they had ovation 3/4 and legende and others for $3!!!!
Foolishly I was like “oh that’s basically free” in my mind 😂
Well they have no descriptions on the website and I’m not experienced enough to know exactly what I need by looking at the photos on their site.
Also I always write in the box for instructions about the free pointe shoes and let them know what I need and they do get close but they just aren’t fitting right
So of course none work for me 😂 some are close but also a few are like 2 sizes too big or more. Etudes, Esmeralda, Legende, Carola and some more I’m forgetting.
now I have like 7 pairs of Sansha pointe shoes none of them fit properly maybe one or two kinda work but not as well as the ones you got me in so I have them carefully stored in my closet.
I always tell the store what I need when I get to the notes for the free pair of pointe shoes and it’s always so so close but like baggy in the heel or too big lengthwise or the box isn’t right like too big or the vamp is too long or short even
It is sooooo hard to say no to free pointe shoes when I can get them free 🤦♀️
I have this crazy idea I will get a local tailor to make them perfect for me Or that I will learn to sew well enough to get them to work. Like shorten the end and make the heel less baggy etc
Is it possible to alter Sansha shoes with sewing and make them fit me 😅
Please tell me this isn’t possible so I go ahead and sell them for like a few bucks plus shipping or give them away and get it over with lol.
I like these types of videos much more than the tik-tok ones. Keep 'em coming!
I'm so grateful for this channel. I'm an overweight, old roller derby player and I wear ballet toe pads inside my derby skates.
Oh I love seeing masters ballet girls on your videos! Just recently started watching them and they are wonderful!
I had to say goodbye to some of my point shoes because our basement flooded and some were at the bottom of the wooden box with my dance and theatre stuff and got soaked 😢
Luckily my tutus where vacuum sealed and saved everything else ❤❤ (I haven't done ballet in 12 years but I still have everything)
I call them Maya’s emotional support toe pads.
I feel like I need her to react to synchronised swimming, it’s often said to be the aquatic ballet
I've never danced a day in my life, but I tune in to every single one of these videos. Why? ✨w h o k n o w s✨
Mayas toe pads are iconic but my friend has been using TOILET PAPER for the last 3 years
yup can confirm, havent danced in 10 years and still have 2 buckets full of all my leotards and dance shoes
🎉
Please watch Melanie Mcintire trying to get to 20 pirouettes!
I am certain I've seen a video of her doing 22 or 23.
Turns yes, pirrouettes, no. She is a fabulous turner, but the videos of her doing infinite turns are usually a mix of many types of turns. I really hope this came accrost kindly. I never mean anything rudly, and I am not the best at communicating myself @@ilznidiotic
Mayaaaa! Love following those MBA dancers on youtube ❤
Maya’s toe pad is so iconic ✨
These videos are wonderful! This (and a large glass of wine) is getting me through election night. 🙃
My first pair was Bloch European Balance! But I ended up switching and sticking to Grishko until I stopped dancing about 3 years ago
My first shoes were actually very poorly fitted bloch's european balance, and the first pair that I actually was dancing in were grishko novices, I'ver had 2 pairs and rn I'm in fr duvals pro extra strong haha
Omg Caitlin Bond! I saw her as Victoria on the Cats tour pre-COVID and she was amazing!
The first one! I haven’t taken a ballet class in 13 years and still have two ballet boxes in my closet full of stuff I’ll probably never wear again. 😂
My first pair of pointe shoes was Bloch European Balance❤
My current pair is Gainors❤
Maya’s ripped up toe pads r something else ❤😂
I've just started pre-pointe. I'm really excited.
I love those tiny Pointe shoes on your desk!
Your videos make me happy. You are so sweet and cheerful. I wold love to have been a ballerina. But at 66, I think I’ve passed the point of no return lol,
i SCREAMED when i saw maya, shes an icon
hi! i was just approved to get my first pointe shoes on Tuesday, and im getting fitted at a pointe shop location today!! i love your videos!!
Not me sat in bed watching this in passé. What a call out 😂😂
I've still got my army cadets boots, toe cap bulled.
The ballet boys in comparison to ballet girls points are sooo true, it hurts 😂😭😂
I guess, old habits, die hard for Maya But! I cracked, up when you called them a toe thong!!
"Whatll you use then?"
These !!😊 *ball of dirty thread*
Josephine, the mini pointe shoe leaning on the mug was about the size of my first pointes!
The toe pads 💀 😂😂
My first pair was Merlet Belles!
sewing my pointe shoes while watching these is the best im dying ahahaha
❤MAYA is sooo good! Maybe the zombie toe pad is her secret😂
Loved this one!! Your content is so fun!🎉
I love your reaction videos xx we need more xx
Yes!!! Josephine finally reacted to Maya’s toepads!!
Don’t forget that one dude at YAGP finals who was basically wearing nothing and showed off all of his muscles and someone didn’t get last place
