A lot of people have said "they are in a museum" at the beginning. Many people miss the fact that the member V is dressed in what we would call "rich people's" luxury lounge wear while everyone is in their "street wear" so to speak. They are not in a museum, they are in V's house and he is the Fallin Angel, the one tempting the other 6 members. V fell from the balcony, he is the Angel that fell and lost his wings.

    • @cyann410
      @cyann410 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

Also, when v slips off the railing, it looks like he is falling into a painting. It looks like a Bosch painting, The Garden of Earthly Delights ??? Perhaps ? That painting itself falls directly in line with storyline of the video. It is a triptych painting (3 separate paintings, hung side by side to form one large, complete painting), and the whole subject of the painting is lust, pleasures of the flesh, and temptation, sin and punishment. I could be wrong with which painting it is, but most of Bosch’s paintings center on temptation, sin, heaven and hell. And extreme use of symbolism. I need to look closer and try to identify that painting ! 💜💜💜💜

I don't want it to sound patronizing, but you did SO good. You saw/caught so many things that most people who watch this don't. Here are a few things about the art in the video. As an art major with an art history minor, I totally geeked out in this video! A lot of them have to do with good vs evil, the idea of temptation and of giving in to it, being vain, letting things go to your head, etc.
First, the painting Jin is staring at the beginning of the video is called The Fall of the Rebel Angels by Bruegel. This painting depicts the war of good versus evil. The angels cast the demons back into the hell from which they came. And you already noticed the black and white door on either side.
You're absolutely right about Icarus and the chocolate wings. Also, if you watch carefully, in the purple lit scene where they're all posing/sitting there's a neon light behind the members that says The Tempter, and the painting behind them is The Lament for Icarus by Herbert James Draper. This same painting is the one in the background in all the scenes where Jungkook is hanging on the swing or just floating in the room. The painting in the back when V jumps off the balcony is also of Icarus. It's Landscape with the Fall of Icarus by Bruegel. This painting is also on the right side wall in Jungkook's room.
That mean looking darker statue in the main room where they all dance is Perseus with the Head of Medusa and it has something to do with the idea of Medusa flaunting her beauty in front of the Gods, or the statue of Athena.
I couldn't possibly list all the statues and paintings in the video, but I'll finish with the sculpture that was shattered, the one where you asked if it was the Virgin Mary. Yes. It was. It's La Pietà, by Michelangelo. It depicts Mary mourning over her son’s corpse after His crucifixion. It's shown with J-Hope, a member who, in the storyline, has a lot to do with mothers and mother figures.

"Did he mean to throw it off and then back on?"
HAHAHAHA that one of the biggest jokes of BTS existence because according to Jimin the jacket flip was an "ACCIDENT". Of course no one believed that, I'm not sure he even believed himself when he said that.
If you pay attention to him in other newer videos he'll do it constantly, even in photos. Stylists dress him in flippy jackets constantly so he can continue to have more "accidents". 😂😂

From the themes of Demien and Neichte I think the MV is acknowledging that growing up requires some shades of gray. That you cannot be your full self until you've seen some darkness and been tested. However, unlike some armies, I don't think they are saying that it is a GOOD thing, only acknowledging it. After all, after Jin kisses the statue (gives into temptation) everything starts to break, bleed and cry. It's not shown as a good thing at all.

    • @ashleyder9164
      @ashleyder9164 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I 100% agree with you. I think acknowledging the realities of growing up is not the same thing as advocating it.

    • @ashleyder9164
      @ashleyder9164 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I have found that a *lot* of ARMY tend to watch certain theory and explanation videos and take them as god-given truth without engaging their own analytical minds to it. And so often what we hear isn't necessarily what 'a lot of ARMY think' but what a few popular theorists think that have then been swallowed and repeated by their viewers.

    • @OhSleeper0287
      @OhSleeper0287 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I definitely agree with the first part of what you said, but not necessarily with the idea that giving into temptation is a negative, at least not 100% of the time. Right after V's back is exposed the next scene is a literal burst of bright and vibrant colors. And yes, Jimin and the statue are crying but again, they chose to use vibrant color. I see that as possibly an expression of liberation or freedom. Freedom from what though- from temptation? From limitations? From the confines of adolescence? I know BTS has given us a basic idea of what the song and video are about but unless they explain every single scene as they truly interpreted it we're all just left to endlessly hypothesize lol But that's half the fun of watching BTS music videos! So many amazing conversations stem from the differences in ARMY's interpretation. 💜

I appreciate your genuine reaction. This MV really has a lot packed in it. That chaotic brilliant mind is in reality all the members, Mr. Bang (CEO), Bighit and all the staff, choreographer (s) and stylists. The members read a lot. Namjoon (RM) has a deep love for the written word and various art forms. And so do the other members, just with slightly different degrees and points of interests. I remember that it was mentioned that BTS's involvement is from concept to fruition. Suga once likened their craft to a year round songwriting camp. They're always writing, contributing, producing and creating. It may not see the light of day today but tomorrow's another day, another chance. That non-stop artistry and process of discovery, growth, tenacity for improvement, genuine love and respect for their craft and people around and surrounding them is ultimately what keeps me continuing to support them. Of course the honestly relatable music and lyricsm that is synonymous with BTS and their undeniable skills and talents play a major part in it, too.
I just recently subscribed so I still haven't checked out all your reactions/content. Have you reacted to their earlier content/MVs? They even have dance practices. As you are an actor/filmmaker/producer(?)" N.O (No Offense) might be of interest. The same with "I Need You", "Run", "Danger" (tbh all their MVs bring a different vibe). If you are interested in their no singing/no dancing but just acting (mostly) comedic skills you may want to watch their freebie short films that they gifted ARMY like "Flower Boys Bangtan High School" and "House of ARMY". The latter has a lot of fandom inside jokes.
Again, thank you for your appreciation of BTS and my apologies for the rather long comment.
    Onwards and upwards!💜

Loved ur take. 💜 This mv has a theme of losing innocence and falling into temptations. The album which the song belongs ( WINGS) is based on the book Demian by Hermen Hesse( the quote in the middle of the song when the music stops is from the book it goes " he too was a tempter he too was a link to the second the evil world with which i no longer wanted to have anything to do". Sry if i didnt quote word for word. The book tells a story about the boy sinclair who grew up in a very conservative religious house hold and goes through a journey where his actions are tested. The organ played by yoongi (Buxtehude passacaglia) is played by pistorious for sinclair in the book. the kiss is also from the book where sinclair is given a kiss from fraueva by Demian . It has reference to Greek mythology (icarus and Abraxus) and also religion. The painting jin was looking at in the beginning is called "the fall of the rebel angels" by Bruegel. It depicts the war between the fallen angels and humans. The green stuff he was drinking is absinthe .U can see the absinthe-imbibed suger lump on fire before RM drinks it. It is a hallucinogenic drink. It simbolizes creativity and liberation as well as madness and despair. Well that's how u fall into temptation ( not being able to beat the desire bt knowing ur nt supposed to. the text written above the mirror where jins face is cracking it says "Man muss noch chaos in sich haben um einen tenzenden stern gebaren zu konnen" quote from nietzche meaning " you must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star". So about the face crackin in the book damien says" the bird fights its way out of the EGG the egg is the world. WHO WOULD BE BORN MUST FIRST DESTROY A WORLD. The bird flies to the god. That gods name is abraxas."so in the book seven sermons to the dead by carl jung"Abraxus speaketh that hallowed and accursed word which is life and death at the same time. Abraxas begetteth truth and lying, good and evil, light and darkness in the same word and in z same act."( fun fact he is the author of the book map of the soul where their most recent era is based on... he incorporates concepts from Nietzche). There is also painting behind yoongi in the first room with the fallen chandeliers where the music starts called the lament of icarus by Draper. The picture where tae jumps from the balcony is also a painting called the fall of icarus by Bruegel. There is so much symbolism, historical, mythical, psychological, and litrary reference so its hard to explain everything but generally its a coming of age story where u are at a certain point where your traditional beliefs and social norms constrict u bt u r tempted to go beyond them. When u find yourself and ur accepting of who u truly are thus shedding your old immature (childlike view of the world) and giving birth to a new you who understands that life is nt always black and white...thus achieving self realization. Sorry for rumbling.💜 Ow and there are bits and pieces tying to the BU like where there is a different flower inside the reflection of the mirror bt most of the BU reference stand out in the Japanese version of the song. So it's kinda telling two stories in one ... it's kinda complicated 😅.

so a LOT of bts' MVs are connected into what called Bangtan Universe
BS&T is a part of it somewhere in the middle of the story, but can be interpreted on it's own as every other MV from Bangtan Universe list if i dare to say. i mean, Fake Love is there too, but it is a complete peace of art by itself with a full meaning
though to dive into BU you need to know boys be names and faces, because each of them has an important character with his own story connected to others
keep in mind that's it's fictional, complicated and highly based on symbolism
i'll leave the list of the BU MVs in the correct sequence below, so you can save it for the future
    BTS Danger
    (some may not agree but...)
BTS I need U (Original ver.)
BTS on stage Prologue (Eng sub)
    BTS Run MV
BTS I need U (Japanese ver.)
    BTS Run (Japanese ver.)
    BTS Epioogue: Young forever
    Boy meets evil
Wings short film #1 Begin (Jungkook)
Wings short film #2 Lie (Jimin)
Wings short film #3 Stigma (V)
Wings short film #4 First love (Suga)
Wings short film #5 Reflection (RM)
Wings short film #6 Mama (J-hope)
Wings short film #7 Awake (Jin)
BTS Blood sweat and tears Official MV
BTS Blood sweat and tears (Japanese ver.)
BTS Live trilogy Episode III The wings tour trailer
BTS Highlight reels (full version + subs)
BTS Euphoria: Theme of Love yourself Wonder
    BTS Fake love teaser 1
    BTS FAKE LOVE MV
BTS Fake love MV (extended ver.)
BTS Epiphany: Love yourself Answer Comeback trailer.
    BTS Save me
    BTS I’m fine
Webtoon Save Me Series (aka an official explanatory comics)
The Notes 1,2 (aka the whole books if after all these ^ you wanna dive DEEPER)
and to be continued in the future i think lol

I feel like you are already an ARMY, you're appreciation for their artistry is wonderful to hear and your reactions are so thoughtful and honest. At some point you should to learn about them individually, they're all so unique, incredibly inspiring and lets not forget incredibly funny.
BTS have a way of drawing people in, they make many of us think about ourselves, others and the world in a different light but I think it's different for everyone. Also BTS have very much have encouraged everyone to learn and expand on their own world and to see more points of views. To not put up with things just the way they if you are not happy, to always seek to improve yourself or situations you may find yourself in.
For me I now feel like BTS are part of my story and because of that I will continue to seek to improve myself and help those around me. If I feel stuck I will listen to their music, read the lyrics and thing about what I can do to move forward.
I also think they have also inadvertently created a movement where people are happy to support others whom they don't even know, ARMYs help each other all the time we aren't just there for BTS and the other way around we are here for each other to.
BTS are truly special and I don't think there could ever be another group like them, we are so luck to get to learn about them and that they share so much with the fans.

We studied, and researched, and brainstormed to figure out each element in this MV. The paintings, the statues, the green drink, the green candle wax, the flowers on the mantle, the dining table scene, the quote... all mean something. BTS/Big Hit have made an ARMY that reads and thinks and makes connections, We know that EVERYTHING in the BU MVs has some meaning, and a reason to be there. There is no coincidence with BTS MVs.
You are the first reactor to see a connection to Jesus Christ Superstar with the poisoned grail. I was thrilled when you saw it. Not many do.
And yes, I read Maximum Ride books!
Think Last Supper for the dining table scene, and connect the apples on the plates to the Garden of Eden.
The painting in the beginning is The Fall of the Rebel Angels, the painting in the balcony scene, where V jumps, is the landscape of the Fall of Icarus, and the painting behind the chandelier/couch is also about Icarus.
The last scene with Jin and the mirror... look closely at the flowers... one is the reflection, but they are different.

You help me see more in each of these videos that I have after watching them a bunch of times. I'm not nearly as good at picking up subtleties as you are. It's great seeing how your mind works as you think about the video while watching it. The chocolate wings comment, geez, mind blown! Hi Cedric. AGAIN you got it right ! love your cinematographic point of view, it brings a lot to my way of watching their MVs. I’m a photo amateur, so what you say talks to me a lot. And yes, this song is about temptation, youth and temptation, when you grow up. They really address youth a lot, you will see that. Their messages are very healing and giving strength to young people. But not only 😉
So,I promised to guide you through recognizing them, let’s start :
    - Jin, here he is central : he watches the painting, he kisses the statue. He’s a singer. Perfect voice, beautiful high notes. He is the oldest. In Black swan you’ll see him in the room with the mirrors
    - RM (Namjoon) : he drinks the green liquid and stares at the camera, he exhale the smoke. Leader of the group, rapper. He is the voice talking in the red break. In black swan he has his solo, under the white ceiling with a shadow moving on it
    - Jimin : withe blind fold, crying green tears, having is shoulder exposed during the dance (fun fact : he told it was an accident, which is a recurrent joke among Armys, we always wait for his shoulder to have another accident, it happens very often ! 😂) , singer and dancer. Contemporary dance bases. In black swan he is the one dancing alone, with blue hair. His voice is the one of a baby angel, so soft and high also.
    - V (Taehyung) : blond here, the one with the cut wings. In black swan he has dark hair, in On he has the vein tattoo in the neck. Singer and dancer. He has a deep voice, with multiple tones. He is one of the youngest.
    - Jungkook : the one with the wheel on his shirt. In fake love he is the one running with the collapsing floor, walking in the break, meeting the hooded guy at the end. He is a singer (main vocalist) and dancer (often at the front of the formations). He is the one with the thorns on the wrists and the shell and the amazing vocals in On. He is the youngest. He debuted its them he was 15 if I’m not mistaken.
    - J-Hope : the one grabbing the height of his thigh during the dance. Also the one curling up in the sneakers in fake love. Rapper and dancer. Perfect face, smiling sunshine. Hip hop dancer base.
    - Suga... The guy with the fire trauma in fake love. Suga is a rapper. He will be the first one to sing/rap in blackswan, on the stage, with the shadow dancing behind him. He produces their music a lot also. You’ll discover how fascinating he his when you’ll watch his solos.
    Enough for today !
Looking forward for your next reactions !

Good job... Excellent reaction... Paying attention to details and having your own interpretation is really refreshing for us. Most of their videos have explanation videos, as they are using so many symbols and so many references (from literature to movies)... So it's really nice to see somebody with your background enjoying everything during the "finding hidden meaning" process... Their lyrics are so goddamn complex that sometimes even after 20 readings and interpretations, one can still feel puzzled. Thank you for taking this path. You won't get bored. :)

As a result of spending my summers competing, allowed me the opportunity to be the drum major of high school, while also cheering during the same game. I would direct the halftime show, but cheer during the rest of the game. If feel blessed to have memories like this. Thank you for mentioning drum corp. I don't think us band nerds get much credit. EXPLANATION: It's a song about temptation & the transition of boy to man. The chorus "i want moremoremore" is about wanting more of the dark sinful desires we face growing up. The guy kissed a statue of a fallen angel bec that's common symbolism for a deal w/the devil, basically him giving in to temptation. And the tears & guy's face cracked at the end symbolized his loss of innocence after succumbing to temptation.

Jimin dances contemporary. For example in his solo „Lie“. You can also see him dancing contemporary during the mv from „Black Swan“ which takes place in some sort of theater. By now we have a full version of Jimins solo dance from Black Swan.

omg your analysis on the dinner scene... of sunrise and sunset and childish (pink) to orange (serious)... damn... that's it for me. that's exactly it. this mv is mainly inspired by the concept of coming of age and loss of innocence due to falling into temptation... but it's also liberating... a start to an end and an end for a new beginning.
    man, i love you. lol

You know how to appreciate these. I love that.
    I'm studying film myself.
Would you please look into their 7 wings short films that came out as teaser before blood sweat and tears music video.
There are some interesting elements in them. Would love to hear you break it down.
You can listen to the 7 corresponding songs as well from the wings album. It would be a great introduction to the music.

You are on the right track and one of the very few reactors to notice the Virgin Mary statue. Also Icarus has a bit to do with it being that this video was off of the Damien book as you will see as you enter into the Bangtan Universe. The BTS videos have been heavily influenced by the book Damien, Into the Magic Shop, MAP OF the SOUL by psychologist Carl Jung, and recently the Bible as well as other works. As BTS sings about the conflicts within the self, mental illnesses, Abuse in many forms, and the affects of society to name a few things. I completely love how your going and taking geniune interest in the boys not only as a group but as individuals. Thank you for giving them that opportunity to gain you geniune interest. Looking forward to seeing more from you.

Yes. They Are films. The dinner scene...the Last Supper??? Just so you know ..for every BTS video...there are explanation videos out there that explain everything... Some explanations come from Behind the Scenes videos where BTS actually explains a lot. Anyway...all your questions are answered out there. Entranced...a perfect word to explain your emotion. I feel that way about a lot of their productions. I watch them over and over. It is so compacted with deep meaning. Enhanced....a great explanation of how we all feel. Why we cant get enough of it. So excellent in content compared to most sexually grinding videos with no content...just in it to make money by showing raunchy body shots. It's so disgusting...shows no talent!! Yeah for the quality and positivity and love of humanity in BTS's videos!!! Bravo.

This is the video I've been waiting for you to react to. This is deeper than many of the other BTS videos but with your producing and acting skills, I'm excited to see your interpretation. I confess these lyrics could be my favorite lyrics. th-cam.com/video/sBuKOYYanRk/w-d-xo.html
    Peaches and cream
    Sweeter than sweet
    Chocolate cheeks
    And chocolate wings
But your wings are the devil's
There is a 'bitter' next to your 'sweet' I've taken this one apart frame by frame. From Black & White doors to bleeding & cracking statues to a painting of good vs evil. The details that this video has are incredible. It was like a puzzle for me and I enjoyed every moment of Blood Sweat & Tears!

Check out this painting by Bruegel:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landscape_with_the_Fall_of_Icarus#/media/File:Pieter_Bruegel_de_Oude_-_De_val_van_Icarus.jpg
This is the famous "Fall of Icarus", and you see it in the background when Taehyung jumps off the balcony. If you look closely, you see Icarus' legs just before he sinks into the sea, in the lower right of the painting. Interestingly you don't actually see this part of the painting in the MV - this is how subtle BTS are in their art: you actually have to look beyond the MV , figure out what the painting is, and then look at the whole of it, in order to see why this painting is there in the first place!
However, the reference here is even more complex. In the storyline of the Bangtan Universe (a huge and complex narrative telling the stories of the fictional alter-egos of the seven boys), the Taehyung character climbs an observation platform by the seaside, and jumps off it into the sea (see Prologue video (end), and Euphoria video (beginning)), while the other boys watch him. It is an essential event in the epic tale, with many repercussions through the story, both backwards and forwards.
I don't want to say more, in case you intend to go on the journey prepared for you in the BU and discover it for yourself, by yourself. But believe me: you will get more surprises than you bargained for! And you will slowly realize that every single detail of their MVs and short films, including this MV and the Fake Love MV, is ultimately a reference to the BU storyline. In many ways, Fake Love is a continuation of Blood, Sweat and Tears, almost BS&T Part II. And they all form the strands of an intricate spider's web, with the BU Storyline at the center. And the name of the spider is Abraxas.

The whole WINGS album is shock full of symbolism. They teased the album with 7 mini films (one for each member) that further develop the BU (idk if you know anything about it). Outside of the storyline, the films are works of art, I think you will truly enjoy them. But I recommend going through the BU in order just to see what you get out of the filming style itself. The songs don’t really deal with the story line, it’s all down to the music videos, so I don’t think you’d have any problems following along.
The first video is I Need U (+19 version) and even if you don’t want to delve into the complicated world of the BU, the video is more formatted as a story, so there’s a lot more acting and less dancing

There's so much to unpack in this video, but you're pretty spot on with this!
A couple of notes that might help -
This song is from their "Wings" album. Each of their albums (or series of albums) explore a specific concept, and to understand the songs it helps to see them in the context of the album and the overarching story being told. The Wings album is about youth coming of age; temptation, loss of innocence, and growth. The concept of the album is largely inspired by the book "Demian" by Herman Hesse, which was quoted throughout the WINGS films.
It can be assumed that the book RM is reading to Jungkook in the beginning of the MV is Demian. The quote he reads during the break is also from this book: "He too was a tempter; he, too, was a link to the second, the evil world with which I no longer wanted to have anything to do."
The piece Suga plays on the Organ is another direct link to the book - it is "Passacaglia in D minor" by Buxtehude. In the book the main character Sinclair has a mentor who is an organ player who plays this exact piece.
The drink being consumed by RM is absinthe, known for it's hallucinogenic properties (and for being illegal many places). It was also a popular substance particularly in artistic circles during the years Herman Hesse was writing.
The painting Jin is looking at it titled "The Fall of the Rebel Angels" showing a battle between good angels and fallen angels.
The painting we see behind Jungkook on the swing is "The Lament for Icarus". Icarus who had been warned not to fly too high nor too low, but was so tempted by the sun that he flew too close so that his wings melted and he fell to his death.
The painting behind V sitting on the balcony is "'Landscape with the Fall of Icarus".
There are several statues of Venus; goddess of love, seduction, and temptation.
The "dark" statue you mentioned is "Perseus With the Head of Medusa" showing Perseus having defeated Medusa who could turn men into stone.
On the table the only thing to eat is an apple placed on each plate. The apple being the symbol of temptation, the fruit that gives knowledge of good and evil, causing a loss of innocence but ultimately growth.
The quote from Nietzsche which you already figured out also ties into this, it speaks of the inner conflict between good and evil, temptation and moderation, is necessary to grow and mature.

You REALLY need to do the BU from the start! That means you should start with I Need you (19+version) then go Prologue and then RUN then (if you really wanna see extra important details) go watch the japanese versions of I Need You and Run (that order and don't film those 'cause copyright WILL hit you), then the Epilogue: Young Forever and then start the masterpieces that are the WINGS short films :D And then for a treat watch BST again and see if you catch any new info :)

if you want to dive deep into the metaphorical meanings of this MV, there is a series of short films that came out as teasers before this MV that tell a visual 'story' or 'concept' for the entire album, they are the Wings short films. They are a beautiful masterpiece of art and I highly recommend. There is a quote used in this MV, which might seem out of place, but it all ties to the short films as well.
