      I have some questions: do we always have to wear a mask with resin? what happens if it doesn't fit? Are there ready-made resins? or do you always have to put the catalyst? and then I wanted to know if the colors can be of various types (metallic, acrylic, etc.) and if they always have to mix with the resin. Thanks

    • @SPS_survivor
      @SPS_survivor 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use art resin quite often and I maybe doing it wrong but there’s zero foc’s them along with other resins.
      I do, however always have a window open and a bit of flow … it’d be pretty cool to have ready made resins, but you’d still need to stir and mix it well.
      Mica powders, glitters, acrylic paints do mix with resin - I would go with mica powders if you’re just starting out - do you have something in particular that you’d like to do, for example - ocean art?!
      If so, buy a few “decent” blues, greens etc - they seem expensive to buy but they are so highly pigmented that a little really does go a long way … you will NOT achieve lacing of cellls with anything other than a good quality white pigment … hope I’ve helped. Enjoy!!
      Not sure what you mean about “if they have to mix with the resin?”

    I’m sorry, I just cannot stop watching you!!!! Maybe I will try your epoxy and white tint. Do you try to put your white right on the edge of your clear, with a hint of it on the dry? Because I tend to lose my define edge all the time. It’s so frustrating to see exactly what I want to do, and not have it turn out. Like you, I don’t like a huge vigorous wave, I like a small frothy undertow on the edge, but like 3 small ones…your videos are so great, can’t tell you how appreciative I am for your wonderful talent that you so kindly share.

    • @backwooddesignco
      @backwooddesignco  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the late response! Yes, exactly! You can try and let the mixed white epoxy set up a little bit before putting it down. Also, don’t blow too much with the heat gun. Let me know how it works out for you 🥰🌊

    Thank you for your tutorial. This may be realize that this is not a project for the weekend crafter. Your info about safety was informative and all the supplies you would need for the project would be costly. I have a greater appreciation for the artists who create resin pieces and the price they charge is definitely worth it.

      @backwooddesignco  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for watching! You’re absolutely right, it can be a bit of an investment to get started and can definitely take time to get the hang of it. Don’t let that discourage you if you want to give it a try though, it’s so much fun and many find it extremely therapeutic ❤️

      Help in pricing what is fair Iv seen some selling for big money or no money

    • @backwooddesignco
      @backwooddesignco  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I base my prices off time and materials. Most people that are undercharging are probably new at the process or just do smaller and local markets. It really depends on who your customers are. To start, set yourself an hourly wage, then figure out your time and material costs, then double it. That’s a good starting point. Then adjust from there!

    Lady you are the best! thank you so much for inspiring me to have a go ( i am doing one right now) and I love it. I have watched a lot of these tutorial vids and I think yours is prob the best I've watched..................so............... thank you for taking the time to help others. I am also impressed as you are the only one that warned about spontaneous combustion of the rags after oiling. This actually happened to me about two weeks ago using Rubio Monocoat and if it wasn't for smoke detectors, I might not be here now as my kitchen caught fire from a sponge that I was using to apply the oil. Apparently it is the linseed oil that oxidises and gets hot according to our fire brigade here in the UK. So, again, keep producing the vids, they are awesome. Steve Britton

      Thank you so much for the kind words, Steve! It’s been challenging to juggle the business and the content-making, but I’ve finally gotten into a groove on Instagram so I think I’ll put more of a focus on TH-cam now and in the future.
      I’m so thrilled that you gave it a try and you’re enjoying it. It’s such a fun technique once you get the hang of it 🥰
      Oh my goodness! That is so scary. Glad to hear you’re okay. Safety is really the most important and it surprises me that more people don’t talk about it.

      🤣🤣🤣 That’s too funny!! I’ll be honest, I’m probably generally not quite as clean when I typically work. Usually I’m working on large batches of boards at a time and I get moving pretty quickly. I usually end up with at least a few drops on my boots 😂 I was a hot mess when I started 5 years ago though! Epoxy on the floor, all over me, my heat gun.. just everywhere lol. You’ll get into a routine and get better at that! Appreciate you for taking the time to watch 🫶🏼

Funny enough, my maiden name is McSween 🤣 You’re right though, it’s very easy to waste the epoxy so I do have to make a conscience effort not to pour too much so it all doesn’t slide off the piece. Be sure to wear a mask and please don’t do in the house. It’s nasty stuff and stinks when it’s heated even slightly. Let me know how it works for you. You can also apply a paste wax instead of tape, but I don’t love that method because it messes with the finish sometimes.
      Now, I just zip off the drops with an oscillating multi-tool or just sand them. I actually find it easier/faster for me than the tape. The tape is great for beginners though, or anyone who is less comfortable with the sanding or doesn’t have good dust extraction. Hope that helps! Happy creating 🥰🌊

    • @backwooddesignco
      @backwooddesignco  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My pleasure! So happy to help. Yes, there is a 1/8” variance between the wood and epoxy surfaces. You can add clear epoxy in the low area to level it out and then sand the entire surface to either keep satin, or to apply a final coat for a glossy sheen. If the surface is fully covered with epoxy, then it’s not recommended for cutting on any longer 😁 Hope that helps!!

    • @backwooddesignco
      @backwooddesignco  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much! I actually have a video on that specifically coming up, but in the meantime here’s some tips:
      -make sure you’re using a 1:1 high viscosity epoxy
      -if you’re using 1:1 and it’s still not sticking to the side, you can pour your epoxy on your piece in the centre and let it set up for about 5-15 min. to let it thicken ever so slightly before you start to spread it around
      -you can also tape the sides and back of your board (I like to start 2-3” further up than where I want my finished line to end) and lay out your design and let the entire artwork set up for about 10-30min before pulling the tape back and letting it slowly slide off the sides. You’ll want to keep an eye on it to fix any spots where there is surface tension and it’s not dripping evenly
      -beside that, the only other suggestions I would make is to use concentrated epoxy/resin pigments as they will be more opaque and help the colour stick to the edges better. Also, a second coat can help to fix anything you’re not happy with (just be sure to get the next coat on before the epoxy is fully set for the best adhesion)
      Good luck! I hope this helps! Let me know how it goes the next time you try it. Thanks for subscribing and stay tuned for more tutorials 🤍

    Thank you for such a fantastic demo from supplies to end product!! I am new to resin and found your explanation and tips invaluable! I heard someone say that brushing on a thin "penetrating" coat first can help with absorption evenness and bubbles released from certain species of wood. What is your experience with this method?

    • @backwooddesignco
      @backwooddesignco  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! So happy you found it helpful! You can definitely do that if you’re having any issues with bubbles. Just make sure you get your next coat on before it sets, or you’ll have to sand in between coats. I will use that method on really soft or porous wood sometimes. I don’t tend to have that issue with the epoxy I use. If you’re using a high enough viscosity epoxy, you should really be able to get sufficient coverage with one coat. I do find it tends to suck into end grain more easily though. Hope that helps! I would just recommend trying both ways and see which way works best for you. In either case, you’ll likely need to do two layers anyways until you get the hang of it… so it’s kind of six of one, half dozen of the other if you catch my drift haha 🫶🏼

    Beautiful work! It seems like I always ruin my piece when doing the white waves. Myself, I like just a frothy undertow coming in or going out. But I never seem to get a thicker white edge. If I put more on, then it just seems to go crazy all up in the blue, which is never my intention. I will say, doing something like this is very different from counter and table tops. And I always seem to get a hair or piece of lint in my work!! I just hate that, or my sides are not smooth, or I get little dents in my work. I’m sure I play with mine too long…knowing when to quit is my biggest challenge!! Love your video!!

    • @backwooddesignco
      @backwooddesignco  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! I really appreciate that! Are you using a table top or casting epoxy? A table top epoxy will help you to achieve this effect quite easily as an overlay. You can also pick up the board and slightly tilt it back towards you and wait a couple seconds for the wave to roll back onto itself. Lint, dust and hairs…are the bane of my existence haha. Hard to avoid. I’ve set up a dedicated “clean room” for pouring epoxy. Has exhaust and air filters. Makes a bit of a difference, but I’m always fighting dust lol. • @backwooddesignco
      @backwooddesignco  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching!! I’m actually working on a video for this next! The best way to test it start by adding a little white pigment to the clear at a time and then mixing and testing on a scrap piece of wood. If then add a little more pigment and do the same thing. Usually 3-4 tests is sufficient. After that wait and let them cure and then see what you’re left with. It’s helpful to make test notes and label your sample. After that you’ll have an idea of how much pigment is needed to get the effect you’re going for. I did a lot of samples when I started! I hope that helps until my next video comes out ❤️🙏🏻 Good luck!

      What brand of epoxy are you using?? I’d try letting the mixed white epoxy set up for 10-15 min before putting down. Also don’t go too crazy with the heat gun as that can push a lot of the product off. It could also be the epoxy you’re using.

    This video was fantastic. Thanks for much for making it. I actually tried making my own beach scene this morning, following your guidelines. It went okay, but like you say, going to take lots of fun experimentation to get better. I did have one question though. I applied the white pigment line along the shore as you did in the video. But when I gently applied the heat gun, the white tinted epoxy kind of melted into the green and blue expoxy further into the water. None of those cool foam cells formed. Should I have waited 15 or 20 minutes for the epoxy to firm up a bit before applying the heat gun? Any other suggestions?

    • @backwooddesignco
      @backwooddesignco  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching! I’m so glad you gave it a try. Did you lay a strip of clear epoxy down at the edge of your blue/greens before you applied the white and blew it with the heat gun? The addition of the clear is what really helps the epoxy to spread over the other colours and create those awesome cells. You don’t have to wait any length of time, as long as your epoxy (after mixed with pigment) still has a high enough viscosity that it would run too freely. A really high viscosity epoxy, closer to the consistency of honey than water, will help you to get the results you’re looking for. Pigments also play a big part. I always prefer to work with epoxy or resin pigments and dyes instead of alcohol inks, acrylic paints & inks, etc. I hope that helps! Keep me posted and let me know how it goes 🤙🏼

      @backwooddesignco  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the Osmo Top Oil is certified food safe. You can also use a butcher block oil, or a beeswax/hemp oil blend, but they need to be reapplied more frequently. Those types of products are more for maintenance as they don’t have as much protection for the wood in their own.

    I’ve watched your videos so many times! Your artwork is absolutely beautiful. I have tried to make my own beach art on a bamboo serving board but I’m having trouble. I can’t manage to get the cells for the waves. I bought the Chillepoxy resin and hardener as well as the Chillepoxy white liquid pigment. No luck 😞😔 Also, the edges won’t stick as I would like them to. Could this be the type of wood I’m using? Could it be that I am warming the resin too much somehow? I’ve tried multiple layers. I feel pretty frustrated right now. Any advice is appreciated.

    • @backwooddesignco
      @backwooddesignco  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your kind words and for watching! I definitely want to give you some pointers for this and help you achieve the look you’re going for.
      Which kit from Chill Epoxy did you purchase? You’ll want to make sure it’s the Chill 3D for the best results with overlays like this. If that is the kit you bought, it could be the temperatures are too warm in your work space. The sweet spot for me is 68-70 degrees. Unless the epoxy is crystallized or below 60’ish degrees, you shouldn’t need to warm it up in a water bath at all. After you’ve mixed it, try letting it sit in your cup for 10-15 minutes before you pour. Also, make sure you’re not blowing the white too much with the heat gun. You want to move it a couple inches and then let the cells appears on their own as it cures. You can spritz with alcohol, but it’s not necessary and will usually require a final clear flood to level out any low spots. Lastly, I would experiment with adding more pigment. Chill recommends starting with 2-5%, but I like to add up to 10% for the density I like to really make the cells pop with the clear.
      As for the coverage on the edges. Is the bamboo serving tray already coated with oil or finish?
      Try sanding the sides of the area and round off the edges slightly where you want it to run off. I’d recommend using an orbital sander and 100-120 grit. If it’s coated in any type of oil or wax finish, that should be removed prior to pour epoxy over it. You may need to clean with acetone, sand, repeat until you remove as much as possible. It’s always best to pour onto raw wood though.
      I hope that helps! Turn on notifications and I can work on a video to help with this. I’ve been meaning to do that for a long time in all honesty. Thanks again for watching and subscribing!
      My goal for 2022 is to focus more on my TH-cam channel! And… learn to scroll saw 🙈🙌🏼🥂 Happy New Year! Please keep me posted how your next attempt goes. Good luck! You’ve got this!
