You made this look so easy, so I went in to my drywall taping and mudding job with pure confidence after watching your videos. But I sucked so bad and messed up a lot of tape haha
Wow! Fast, efficient, clean, and instructing incredibly well while he does it. Chad's amazing!!! Thanks for the great video. Definitely cutting my job time in half if not better.
For me, this is the best instruction on taping and mudding. I can't afford a lot of stuff but will try to do things I can't afford to hire others to do. Taping and especially mudding is an art. I can passably hang sheetrock. I can poorly tape joints and I know I suck big eggs at mudding. However, I watched this series of videos a few years ago and I watched each one several times before taping and mudding a farmhouse I gutted and remodeled. I did all the wall work for smooth wall from this video series and the walls came out very nicely. There are very few imperfections because I simply came as close as I could following Kody's techniques. Plus, my wife loves the house. Now I am about to mud a two bedroom, 2 1/2 bath barndominuium I framed, did plumbing, electrical, insulation, etc for my 30 year old autistic son. I re-watched all the videos and feel confident I can do at least as good as I did on the farmhouse a few years back. Thanks so much Kody. You have no idea how helpful you've been.
Had to watch this video twice. Not a drop of mud on the ground. The best part was when he showed how much mud ended up on his trowel after feathering the edges. That gives me a good sense of how much pressure I need to apply. Great video.
great job man I can tell you know what you doing I've been finishing drywall for 40 years I don't understand why there has to be so many haters on every TH-cam channel everybody does a little bit different so for someone to criticize the way you do it is ridiculous you have good control you make a flat spot in the middle on your butt joints that way you can feel to the side on the skim coat exactly the way you finish but joints especially with a hawk and a trowel
Great video Thank you ! It is a lot harder than it appears. So many people try to get too much mud on . I remember going into a job that the home owner tried to finish and he used a belt sander on. Needless to say when we go it done we practically plastered the entire area. You are the real deal my friend !
@@uptokode Yeah my friend spent four days all day long sanding while I tried to feather out the butts etc. It looked like a plaster job when we got it done. I should have welded it and plastered it . I am a plasterer too. Yep Kody people want to pile it on ! Ha Ha Ha !!!!
very helpful, I am redoing a wall in my house and have been looking at how to properly do butt joints and you are by far have the best explanation. Thank you :D
Great job!. I worked as a taper for 8 years and did 3 coats for a while then started doing 2 coats. I think imo 2 coats is sufficient. I've helped some of my family members taping their kitchen and with 2 coats I've never had a complaint.
i am Journeyman Taper with 20 years experience. hearing you explain this proses reminded me of my old boss back when I was in apprentice. Excellent Vedio bro good info
We use a self enclosed hand machine called a ' Banjo ' . Shaped much like the instrument. Drop in a roll of tape run it out the end .. drop mud in the adjoining compartment. VIOLA !Pull the tape out and it is loaded with mud .. run it down the seam.. you or a helper follows wiping it down . 'Done' install tape in reverse and ceiling can be done . the Banjo can be purchased for under a hundred Bucks. Had mine for 50 pluse years and still working great. That aside , Chad is a champ ! :)
I am actually impressed most of the times you see someone trying to finish drywall on the channel that they don't have a clue what they're doing you're doing it just right nothing finishing a butt joint like a hawk and trowel I have a custom-made mixer that you would just love it's four bladed each blade has two holes about an inch and a half in diameter it's made out of stainless steel at least the blades are the shaft is hexagon and I would say the blades are probably 6 or 7 inches long and they sit right on the bottom it will actually draw mud in Word instead of throwing it out great job dude
I'm a roofer doing a remodel and I'm not good at mudding. I've been looking at alot of videos on TH-cam, so you can say that I've been looking at alot of " CLOWN" videos, lol. Thanks for giving me the " tips" that I needed for my little side job remodel and the knowledge I was looking for.
I have professionally framed, finished, built cabinets, and repaired diesel locomotives for 12 years. Taping efficiently is not easy. This guy is an all star for sure.
So I guess I've been doing this a few years now. I never really realized how fast our crew was until I watch these videos. We tape with a banjo now, but still manually float. With a pan, 10inch knife for Windows, long, corners. Then a 12inch for bud joints.... Honestly.. We like to run through the whole house with our 10inch knife then do the bud joints last after its sat up for a hour or 2.... It's usually so smooth after a couple passes of sand paper that the skimming process is a breeze. 2 people can sand and skim a 300 sheet house in about 5 hours.... This guys tools seem like it would take longer then I'd prefer... Everyone has their own techniques tho.
hey you are the best instructor out there what kind of towel do you use for your first and second and third coat is it a flat trowel ? or curved trowel and what size is it ? thanks for your response
Thanks guys. I wished that I had watched this video before I built(my first) laundry room in my basement. 180 square feet. I had to use 6" Mosaic tiles to border the entire room where my sheet rock meets in the center. I can clearly see a 6" bevel right around the entire joints. 3" in the upper board and 3" in the lower board. Does it matter which way you turn the tape to do the flats? Everton
+Everton Oliphant The tape is pre folded (sort to speak) and has a seam down the middle. Make sure where it would fold and make the "V" that the "V" part goes against the wall. I did it backwards once and i had to fill a bit more to cover where it bumped out. Hope I'm making sense.
I have never seen drywall finishers use a trowel like that to do the first coat ... Very interesting, I like that, it seems to work very well, its quick, and also the tray he is using seems a very slick move, I have been getting more drywall jobs than I like, I normally do tile but I pick up other jobs when tile is not ready.
I like to do the horizontals first because by the time I'm done it dried enough for me to do the butt joints. It's really preference and we all develop a method like a artist. It was good to see someone that actually knew what they were talking about and had the skill to back it up. I do wish you used a 5" and a single swipe to do the nails though ;) instead of those little spots....
ive seen many videos on drywall most dont have a clue.. beware air bubbles under your tape will have to be cut out after drying your video brings me back to the old days when you could called a "taper" thanks... exellent job
It's hard to find quality tapers like this anymore.. (I'm a painter) and most jobs the subs come in and do it half fast and don't understand how shitty the walls look after being painted. Nice work!

I'll be redoing the walls in a room where the ceiling is in great shape. What's the best way to minimize the rework that has to be done on the ceiling at the wall to ceiling joint?
Good work buddy. Wish I had you on the job I’m doing now😑 can not get rid of the seams on the ceiling keep going over them and soon as I put paint on it there back again:(
This vid made the biggest difference in the work that I did in my own home. I would have never considered using a trowel like that, but holy cow, what a difference it made. Question:, Near the sheetrock in the local big box store are curved trowels. I tried it and it was difficult to achieve the results I was after. Next day I purchased a flat concrete finishing trowel and had much better luck. +Kody Horvey, is your trowel flat, or curved? Is one better than the other? and by the way... Stellar, stellar work. and a great video to boot.
21 year vet and former taper instructor. We use all depends on the walls if framed good walls are easy . What he doesn’t show is you should check the tape and see if you need mud on one side more than the other . But usually it’s similar to what he did .
You know what your doing and your doing it right man I know this because I'm very skilled myself except i use pan and knife that's the only difference keep it up
And when you don't have those tape joints to start and stop your application runs? I'm trying to mud over partially removed wallpaper and a rough wall that's been remodeled numerous times. My trowel applications have to go from floor to ceiling. I really hate drywall work...btw.
first guy ive seen using a tape reel good job i use 6 inch knife and 12 inch trowel on tape coat that way i just stick my trowel to the wall while taping and forming angles .piece worker from the 80s
Kody Horvey I recall a previous video where the tape was initially applied, and there was a lot of information regarding the consistency of the mud. This video seems to skip over the concept of consistency, so I was wondering how much thicker the mud is on this coat. Thanks for your help, and for the great instructional videos.
bbmungo Yes good point! 1st coat would be thicker than the mud used for taping. The mud will shrink less if less water is used to thin it and since your first 2 coats are used to fill you want to keep shrinkage to a minimum. Make it a consistency that is easy to apply but won't sag or settle. Overall 1st coat mud would be the thickest and your last coat would be thinned down in order to do a nice light skim coat.
Very good job my friend. I prefer the plastic corner beads instead of the paper but that is personal preference. I am just glad to see that you were not using any mesh tape. I see too many people using it on Hugely Gay TV (HGTV). You know who you are and you should be castrated. Just because it is quicker doesn't make it better. It flexes and cracks. I also pre-fill with sandable 90, I find it hardens stronger and makes the seams stronger. Having written all that you could out crack fill me any day of the week.
This is how I use to do it. I'm don't tape daily but I learned its much easier and flatter if you run an 8" trowel right up the middle on the same day you tape. Then the second day use a 12" trowel to get each side. Then the 3rd day use a 12" knife to smooth it out.
I just tried the trowel method for the first time after using the large knife for many years and It’s not easy!! After feathering when I go down the middle, the curve of the trowel just gouges the mud on the each end. I don’t understand the curve. If the trowel was 24 inches long then great. Just go up and down. As it is it just rips lines on each side. I’ll keep practicing
Is this in California? I've only used the knives and pan method you know 6" 8" 10" 12" etc. Etc. But it looks like these method leaves a more straighter flatter finish, I bet its takes a while to master it, also we do the nails non stop like on a straight like. Nice job!
I've watched a lot of jokers trying to teach stuff on TH-cam and in real life, one the don't look the part, know the knowledge well, and rush like there out of time, and this man is not one of those guys, this guy knows his job, his way around the job site and is presentable for his position as a mudder. Thanks for the videos, really great stuff, you are a excellent mudder, wish more people were experts in there field as you are sir.
Yes pretty much the same for the 2nd coat. Just go a bit wider, maybe an inch or 2 on each side. 3rd coat will be thin mud and just a skim. Basically apply the mud and wipe back off. It just fills and corrects and low spots.
Think it was a little thick for 1st coat. My 1st coat is 8 inch knife and I can still see the tape. 2nd coat is 10 inch trowel, final coat depends on 12 o4 14 inch trowel. Commercial setting, 1st coat 10 inch trowel, final coat 12 inch trowel. I'd still hire him, you never stop learning.
Such old school perfection makes me wanna cry. Cheers Man....LEGEND.

Hey Cody how many coats you apply and sand?
After tape and beads it’s typically 2 coats and final sand.
I use a straight trowel. Works well for me.

+Joee Mama Don't know bout California...Here's wearing a Philadelphia Flyers cap
+dustin jeffries Thank you!
What kind of compound did you use?
Dude your a beast, great work and vids... Are you completely against using knives and a pan or do you just prefer the hawk and trowel?
Kody Horvey ^^
nice work good to see the hawk and trowel out
How much wider does he bust the joints on the next coat? Is the process pretty much the same?
