How Dubai Built A Metropolis Of Skyscrapers Out Of A Desert | Magnificent Megacitiies

  • A metropolis in the desert. Rapid city development combined with pride and tradition. Historical landmarks categorise Dubai, as does the most expensive hotel in the world. From the sand dunes stretching into the sky, this sparkling city has come a long way.

In 2003, 33 test holes were drilled to study the strength of the bedrock underlying the structure. "Weak to very weak sandstone and siltstone" was found, just metres below the surface. Samples were taken from test holes drilled to a depth of 140 metres, finding weak to very weak rock all the way.

There's a word for what this movie calls "dow-boats." We call them "dhaos."
      dhow
      /dou/ noun
a lateen-rigged ship with one or two masts, used in the Indian Ocean.
And if they asked around. somebody could probably tell them how to pronounce the mysterious "Qatar."
I don't think it's a matter of stupidity. The guy is just English. is all. They're not born that way: they have schools and mass media that make them like that.

"We can freely express ourselves, except about religion" In other words, then can not...
And i like their fake excitement for art, ignoring the fact that it's just one of many new ways to make tons of money, because the oil money is fading.
Nice documentary though. Dubai is a beautiful city. The contrast between traditional center and modern extravagant outer circles is beautiful.
And you've got to love the UAE for using their wealth for improvement. They reinvest everything. That is amazing. Other oil rich countries like Saudi Arabia or Russia use most of it for wars, while their people stay poor. Or Venezuela who just failed in every way.

It is so that the poor and the rich are not differentiated, to bring people closer together and to emphasize the quality of personality and not superficiality. Additionally, the clothes allow for the circulation of hot air through the body and act like a chimney in the hot dessert.

31:58 is a bold faced lie. My main problem with the UAE is that it lives on the labor of what is very nearly slavery, it houses great poverty, & the only reason it 'thrives' is because massive quantities of currency are funneled in to the city by extremely rich men. there is no real social net to protect the lower class of people, they either do or do not serve the upper class, which determines whether they starve or flourish. When new construction is underway, 'slave' quarters are built to house the migrant workers, their passports are held by a supervisor, so they cannot leave willingly, and their pay is often withheld until the company deems to release it....they are also paid based on the nation they hail from & not the current fair wage of the nation they work in. Pointing out the beauty of the UAE is easy, there is much beauty to see, the great wealth has seen to that, but the coin has two sides & one cannot tell an honest story about the UAE without looking at BOTH sides. Another problem is Islams brutal treatment of women & homosexuals. A woman has some say in her life, less if she is from a poor family, but she cannot do much of what a man can, & we all know what the karan says about gays. The funny thing is , liberal people are the ones who often accept islam with open arms, & they are the very ones it will subjugate. im a man, a well to do man, who is straight, i would do quite well in a Shariah ruled nation, can you say the same?
