As a new expat (less than 8 weeks), I have been amazed by two things: #1 The very high quality of many expats. There is a certain percentage that has very distinct qualities. Highly adaptable, organized, and forward thinking. This group can be dropped anywhere on the planet and come out OK, or even thriving. #2: The reverse of the above. The clueless. People who lack the basic common sense, knowledge, or financial resources to travel international. I've already seen/heard of a number failing or even getting themselves into very deep troubles very rapidly. Bottom line, if you want to take this adventure, it's a lot like us bikers in the US. You are taking a risk, but it is a calculated risk to improve your enjoyment of life. Be aware of road hazards or become road kill.
absolutely agree. living overseas, especially in southeast asia, is not for the feint of heart or the clueless. problems can escalate if a person is not resourceful or a problem-solver.
I love information, and different perspectives. My tickets are bought, my plan has been made and I am days away from my flight. I am not letting life pass me by.
The saying may have been in Magnum Force in 1973 but before that it was in Cool Hand Like spoken by the chain gang Captain, Strother Martin, to Paul Newman’s character. Another great line from that movie was: “What we have here is a failure to communicate!”
Lol. I work 7p-7a 3 days a week, and can sympathize with finding yourself awake at 3am with nothing much to do. I'm settling in and look forward to enjoying your podcast.
aside from 2 years as a day-walker, my entire work career i did either 2nd-shift or graveyard. also have done the 3-day workweek thing. i'm a night-person so for me it was no big deal. and i got paid more. :)
You bring up a great point. I deliver mail to a customer who bought a brand new midsize moterhome for around 90000 thousand dollars I saw he used it only four times over 5 years. now he has a for sale sign for 45000 dollars I then asked him how many miles on it he said only 13000 Mike's wow he could've went to a 5 star hotels for much less over tge years . Sadly most Americans are like this customer.
I’m in the process of getting ready to sell off things I can’t bring with me, car , furniture, etc. I have a pension and SSi , so a living wage isn’t an issue, my challenge is the transition (BTW, the movie that Clint Eastwood said that was Heartbreak Ridge ). I’ve traveled to the Philippines several times in the past, it’s just that before I knew I was coming back but with this situation I’m staying, so I’m trying to settle old debts, figure out what I’m getting rid of and the very few things I will take and later have sent to me . I fully understand it’s all about willpower and I do feel like I have nothing here, no girlfriend, my family does thier own thing, I have no kids. So l have no excuses but i just can’t up and leave, l want to but I have to make a logical transition, so it won’t make things more complicated than it should be.
Generally, we have settled for mediocrity in the western world. We say, ‘l will do it tomorrow’ or ‘l’de like to do that when the time is right’. Well! News flash’. The world doesn’t stop for you - you have to MAKE IT HAPPEN. We have to ameliorate our situation. We only live life once. Good talk Reekay.
This was as good as it gets in explaining what someone who seriously wants to get to the Philippines needs to do to get there. As Always, May God Bless you and yours! 😇
Reekay this may have been one of your best works! Tremendous work! What hit home with me the most was your excellent recommendation to MINIMALIZE and your plea to be pro-active. Love it and I am/have been ALL IN for being an expat in the Philippines. THANK YOU for all of your wise words and for putting it all together in our current day of life. VERY well done!!!
Very good video. I can clearly understand what you are saying. You must have invested wisely in your equipment. Some people need to hear motivational speaking daily. Meaning me. Thanks.
This was an amazing discussion on getting you life and mindset focused on your "Future Life" and making plans for it. Getting over your "Constrained Past Life.
I would be interested in listening to that hour going through the starches. And chemicals and preservatives and everything in our food... Your perspective on it. If you've done it, what's the link and if you haven't when you're gonna do it, bro
there is so much to share on this that i created a fb-group to share all this info about processed foods, keto, carnivore, fasting and more. you can access all of it for free here; facebook.com/groups/reekay.healthyhabits
The search for happiness is one thing. But ask yourself not only do I have a happy life, but do I have a meaningful life? Reekay I am a long time subscriber, 16 years older than you. You, with others, have served as a role model for me as a You Tuber. I started my channel 18 months ago and now have 1,500 subscribers. I never intended to make money from it and never will. As we all get older it's vitally important to keep moving forward, both in mind and body. I lift weights 3 - 4 times a week. Moving forward mentally is achieved by challenging myself to learn new things. I am now writing 2 EBooks for Amazon KTP self publishing. Over the last 15 years years I have visited Thailand and the Philippines innumerable times. I had a Filipina girl friend 27 years younger than I during 5 years. I would love to meet you when I visit again in September. I am very happy and fulfilled with my lifestyle in a kibbutz in Israel. Hopefully I will meet the right Filipina this time who would love to share my unique lifestyle. Keep well.
I just checked my podcast player and your last episode on your channel is back in 2018. I put "Reekay" in the search function. Is there a newer channel it's not showing?
Really great information, thank you Reekay! I'm actually a pinoy currently living and working in the US, i'm 48, and it's my goal to go back home to the Philippines and retire early in my home country. I'm doing exactly what you are saying: Living minimally, saving each dollar that I can, tighten up my budget as much as I can, and even have a second job so I can save up more money. I'm hoping to retire early while I'm still young so I can enjoy the second half of my life :) I've been watching all your videos - you are an inspiration to me, you show all of us that it is possible to live in paradise.
The reason people sell courses online is to use the internet to make money. Their plan or course is bogus, or they would be utilizing their own course instead of selling a course. I spent zero dollars figuring that out.
Recently Subbed, 15 minutes ago Such a great point about liquidating stuff, we all have it here in the USA Stuff. I know I am going to have to find things to keep me busy but I don’t believe I will need to earn any income. My government pension is over $6000 a month and I will be 60 years old when I arrive in the Philippines in March of next year. I paid off all my debt and have savings as well. I also plan to start drawing my social security at 62 which will be another $2,400. I going to travel regularly when I get there but I will still need things to do
you will be fine financially. not an issue in the ph with that budget. asia is your oyster at that point. consider some short trips to vietnam and singapore.
Great talk Henry. Haha you were talking right at me. I would love to have a virtual coffee break with you and talk about my ideas to set myself up in the philippines..not online idea, or service ideas, but "brick & mortar" ideas with reasonable profit to supplement my SS (62 in Feb), but also with heavy focus on connecting human capital (worthy poor) and effort with skills and opportunity to see them transform poverty into their new lives. Maybe that made just enough sense to intrigue you? In my opinion, it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for the philippines to be a poor country. I just think there needs to be a better focus on capitalizing human resources, I think I hope I have some rational ideas. How to do that in a small circle.
Selling is just one aspect of online businesses. There are plenty of people that are monetized and dont have an actual online store or a product. One example is a youtuber that has a channel about retirement. Now we number there are thousands of channels about this subject, and this youtuber is not well known and has a small subscriber base yet he makes 2k per month,so making money online isnt as difficult as you are making it out to be and he could certainly live fairly well on that 2k in the Phils if he wished. That youtuber lives in Cali.
Dr.Reekay...Since you aren't eligible for SSI...and you've been in the Philippines for 6 years,,,How are you making income...??You've must have save a bunch of money for your survival..
actually, i've been in the PH for 12 years now, since 2012. :) in the beginning, i had some real estate income as well as online customers for my computer repair business. i then started an online store and just as that was getting off the ground, i began my youtube channel in May/2013.
