There’s a better documentary nowadays on ESPN 30x30 (The Last Days of Knight) that WILL give a better idea of the environment and why he was forced to take it. Even the university president was bullied by Bobby Knight… over 40 players left the program with 6 All-American leaving in 2 years triggered the report. The believe was that players’ mentality was changing and they “couldn’t take old school though coaching.” However, the outcome was different when it prove that Coach Knight was bullying everyone around him.

When you win! Everyone loves you. But when you lose. Everyone hates you! Plain and simple. Young men need discipline and direction. But don't need abuse. Bobby brought alot of money to I.U. So maybe they over looked his abuse. They waited 29 years before they said a word. Bobby thought he was a King. He was! But they let that happen. I blame the school for not reeling him in earlier. Ego and Narrisium create a very bad combination. Bobby Knights Father died early in Bobby life. Maybe this is what happens when a Father isn't there to keep their son in check. No excuse's for Bobby. He made his bed. Now he has to lie in it. Shawn

Larry Bird left Bloomington in 1974. I think it was after 21 days he decided to leave and hitchiked home because he felt out of place and out of his element. Also he felt it just wasn't going to work out. Thank Indiana State coach Bill Hodges for not giving up on persuading Larry Bird to give college a second shot. Otherwise, we might never have heard of Larry Joe Bird at all.

Coach Knight was an outstanding basketball coach and an undeniably affective teacher/motivator. He ran a clean program and graduated his players. It’s also very clear to anyone who is objective enough to see, that he was and could be very prideful, egotistical, vindictive, bullish and uncontrollably temperamental. The University of Indiana and even the state allowed this man too much power and influence to the point where he was no longer accountable for his actions, until the Neil Reed Incident came to light.

It depends on your criteria for what's termed a "good coach." My definition is one which includes providing a learning environment in which the players grow through respect into people who will show that same respect for others. Yours obviously only relates to wins. I call that a "coach with lots of wins." I believe that by any standard, a good coach is one who does not embarrass himself or his players. On that point, I would think even you, a person who calls peoples' comments "ridiculous" despite the criteria being generally accepted would agree to that. Perhaps not....

But, none quite like him. Big Ten championships, NIT championships, NCAA championships, Pan Am gold medal, Olympic gold medal, the last men’s team to ever go undefeated, the motion offense, the man to man defense, the desire for the perfect game, graduating players, running clean programs, not violating NCAA rules, not cheating. During the Cold War era, in sports, Bob Knight was the embodiment of the American dream and the most feared and respected by the Soviets. He was colorful, tenacious, intelligent, and loved the game. Nationally, you didn’t even have to be a fan of basketball to know the name Bob Knight. Knight literally changed the game, that’s a fact. A fact that many coaches and journalists have maintained. Knight created a culture in Indiana that probably no coach in the history of sports have created in a state and unless you lived in Indiana you wouldn’t have the slightest clue as to what that means or what I’m talking about. People like Knight come around once in a lifetime, as it goes. Knight never changed. He was true to his principles to the bitter end. He couldn’t be bought or silenced or broken. He was Bobby Knight. Yes there have been other successful coaches but none quite like him. In light of all the people, including Kareem Abdul Jabbar, that have come forward to expose all the cheating, corruption and the absolute heinous cultural at UCLA under John Wooden’s watch one would or should be appalled and shocked. But, no, he was a nice guy. It didn’t matter he had lost control of his program and turned his cheeck to sharks and wolves in sheeps clothing-So long as he won. Call me crazy, but I’d rather my son be grabbed by the neck (not choked mind you, there’s a difference) in practice and graduate college than be given a handout and exposed to the corruption at UCLA, and other so-called great institutions in sports. Knight, above all else, was a teacher. One that couldn’t be compromised. Good day.

I think that entire incident shows the decline of kids who had to fight tooth and nail to compete. The soft underbelly of society in general is in full display from pee wee football, soccer, etcetera. Everyone wins for participating, who cares who won, we had fun. That isn't how the world works at all. That sets up a non-competitive atmosphere at 6 years old. I never seen one report that Coach Knight ever forced anyone to play for him...who and how he is was known by the kids who accepted a free education, and worked their asses off in the classroom and on the basketball court. On a lower level comparatively, is running bleachers for making mistakes in practice abuse? That's far worse in the 95 degree afternoon practices for athletes who play their sport outside. In essence, that's cruel and potentially life threatening...but, the coach was punishing/motivating that kid. We sadly have high school, college, and professional athletes that perish from heat related issues every year. Has anyone ever seen a reported death from being grabbed by a coach? The kids IU lost from "not being able to take the abuse" knew what they were getting into before accepting the free education and playing for him. Coach Knight, if anything...was guilty of not seeing the lack of toughness and character of the "athletes" who cried their way out of their scholarships. Neil Reed, RIP...however, his verbal account and what the tape showed did not match. Nobody stepped in and broke the incident up, the tape shows that as a fabrication by Reed. Maybe the lesson here is what my coaches used to tell our teams, "if you're not tough enough to play in the yard with the big dogs, best just keep your ass on the porch."

There is *ZERO* evidence of Coach TERRY REED ever striking ANY basketball player.
Terry Reed's college coaching stops included stints at University of Southern Mississippi, Iowa State University, University of New Orleans, Indiana State University, Henderson State University and Eastern Oklahoma State College. Reed also was a highly-regarded basketball clinician, and served as an offensive consultant to then-coach Tim Floyd at the University of Southern California. *After retiring from formal coaching, Reed provided private instruction to a number of young basketball players in Central Arkansas.* He has had the privilege of mentoring some talented young men in his lifetime.
In 1970, Reed led the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers to the championship of the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference, earning both first-team All-Conference honors and named an NAIA All American.
Reed graduated with a degree in history and physical education in 1973, and then launched his coaching career as head coach at Cutter Morning Star. *He coached varsity basketball programs in Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois and Indiana. In his seventeen years as a high school coach, Reed compiled a record of 237-157 and earned state-wide Coach of the Year honors four times.*

Agree. Knight’s “scandal” is an early example of outrage journalism tactics against a coach that media wanted out. What’s more outrageous: a college coach grabbing a kid in practice or one who makes $8M per year? This was never worthy of national attention but made great theater & was a good test run for ruining the life & legacy of Joe Paterno at Penn State.

@@Free_the_People Yes it was. But it was the destruction of an old icon who gave every fiber of his being to doing what was right & media used outrage tactics to manipulate his own ppl to destroy him as if he were a total stranger, rather than speaking with him & investigating. Paterno died shortly thereafter & PSU even treated his wife horribly while Paterno was still alive.
We all agree that a man who molests adolescent boys must be imprisoned until dead but that was never the issue at PSU. Seriously, I know it sounds like I’m telling you that it’s dark outside while the sun is actually shining because WE ALL (me included until a few years ago😀) believe that we already know the truth & examining how Paterno was treated is supporting child rape. Except ...that media created such a hostile & emotional atmosphere where we were actually encouraged to express anger. Being angry that Paterno hadn’t been fired yet was standing up for little boys who had been molested but couldn’t speak for themselves & we all got on Facebook said so. Sports media suddenly had a voice in the national spotlight & taking heads got to give tearful speeches about the thoughts of little boys being molested.
Except it turned out that media was reporting many false facts including the ultimate facts that went to the very heart of the issue w/Paterno & Penn State. If you go back & review that mess w/2020 eyes you will be amazed at how gullible all of us were. We lynched the character & legacy of a man who’s entire life was given to service of others all based upon a few sentences that were taken out of context & falsely given meaning to “sex up” the story. Media & social media combined into the mob of cancellation on an 85 year old man who died 74 days later with all he had served turning their backs on him. And to this day 99% of us think that Paterno & other conspired to cover up Sandusky molesting boys to protect Penn State rather than caring about the boys. Almost everything you believe about the case is a lie & some of the lies were quietly retracted 1-2 years later. Paterno’s wins were reinstated & as ppl learn what media did not only to Paterno but to all of us by manipulating us to virtue signal while they cashed in & power was acquired, lost, bought & sold is amazing.
Some day a real movie will be made about what happened & it will portray all of us & society as being just as gullible/ignorant as the ppl & judges in Salem witch hunts. It’s that crazy. Some of the same tactics were used here against Knight. The guy is an egomaniacal jerk at times but media used some of the same tactics here. Sorry this is so long. If you decide that you want to learn the truth about Paterno & some of the others at Penn State then I can post a link & you can go from there. If you go all the way then you might even talk to ppl who were involved in the case or had contact w/Paterno, Sandusky or others in the case like I have. It’s fascinating & im amazed at the legal standards that relieve media & social media for libel & slander. 😀

@@Free_the_People Hey sorry that response was so long. I’ll make it short. 😀 Paterno’s downfall was actually media reporting that Paterno covered up what Sandusky did & manipulated all of us to stand up for child victims against molesters. Of course we all want child molesters to die in prison so that’s what the media manipulated to incite outrage. Turns out media reported lies about everyone involved. Read my long answer if you want more info.

@JBSptfn It takes a lot of words to explain how the claims system worked once the floodgates opened on Sandusky claims. Penn State was settling quickly & lawyers were scrambling looking for clients. With Paterno dead any claim that involved speaking w/him got attention but it only came out because PSU’s state insurance fund saw it as a way to attempt to not pay claims. In other words there’s a bunch of technical stuff that gets spun & there’s never been substantiation that Paterno was told anything let alone by a victim.
I’m not into defending PSU or Paterno, I simply became aware of media not reporting things like multiple “victims” not remembering anything until taken to a “repressed memory” psychologist who destroyed other lives in the same area of PA. Sandusky’s lawyer completely blew the defense. Anyway, all I care about is truth & I promise you that if you decide to look deep into this case you’ll see media tactics that I didn’t even realize were being used until just the last few years. It’s a circus. Here’s a folder to get a start on the video side:

The choking incident was nothing compared to the many first-hand accounts I've gotten from players ... my first year as a student at IU was Knight's second year as coach there ... I lived on the same dormitory floor as a player on the '76 team and after I graduated had extended conversations with another player on the '77 team, who told me about the toilet paper incident years before it was publicized in this video ... and Knight not only slugged players, he also slugged a recruit BEFORE he actually committed to IU ... I'm from NW Indiana and the story about Knight slugging Dan Dakich in his team's locker room after a high school game is legendary in these parts ... although Dakich denied the story, I've actually had this story confirmed by a teacher inside the school system ... an equipment manager on the '76 team also told me ass't coach Dave Bliss was scared as hell of him ... but here's a story that really surprised me ... I used to work with someone who knew former player Eric Anderson, who also played in the NBA for Pat Riley at Miami ... my friend asked him one day who was crazier, Knight or Riley? Surprisingly, Anderson said " ... without a doubt, Riley!"
