  • Bob Knight, one of college basketball's winningest coaches during 42 seasons at the U.S. Military Academy, Indiana University and Texas Tech, and who led the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in 1984, died Wednesday, November 1 at age 83. In this "Sunday Morning" profile that aired March 17, 2002, correspondent Bill Geist talks with Knight (nicknamed "The General") about his philosophy of teaching; his competitiveness; and his tantrums on the court (which led to his firing from Indiana). Geist also talks with players Andre Emmett and Andy Ellis about playing under Coach Knight.

Best college basketball coach in history. Period. Bum's quote applies - "he can take his'n and beat your'n, then he can take your'n and beat his'n. RIP, Coach. You'll always be one of my heroes.

Bobby Knight was a character and he was funny and he won and graduated players who may have ordinarily bolted for the NBA and the money. RIP Bobby.

@@andorfun4679How is making kids go to class and graduate self serving. There are what? maybe 20 spots available in the NBA each year for new players. He sees that and is looking out for them.

He also committed multiple assaults he was never held accountable, with IU his enabling lap dog. Never held himself accountable either. Saying "sometimes I regretted treating some kids as hard as I did" is a lame cope, especially for things like choking some, or whipping a ball as hard as you can at someone's head. Dude was a total a hole to people outside of the team as well, that had the unmitigated audacity to question him seriously about anything.

I didn't know about all he had common with the TTU President at the time. What I do know is the AD, Gerald Myers, knew Coach for 30+ years and knew to how to manage and handle him. Aside from a confrontation with the Chancellor at a supermarket, you hardly heard anything negative out of Coach Knight during his time at Lubbock. The change in scenery seemed to be exactly what he needed.

Its funny how the PC snowflakes outside of his circle of friends/players/coaches/media despise Bob Knight for the most part and without fail make him out to be some sort of evil villain.. whilst individuals *within* his circle of friends/players/coaches/media respect and admire him for the most part and make him out to be a man who had an overwhelming net positive in their life.

Complicated man. I thought he would quit after Indiana fired him. He had far fewer problems with his personality in Lubbock, probably because it did not have the expectations that Indians had

More Coaches should have follow Coaches Knights philosophy. Best Coach ever . But in todays college rules and these are now pro players in college ( They're getting paid to play ). Bob would have done what Jay Wright did and RESIGNED before the college game becomes a JOKE - Which it now IS .
