Lovely, isn't it? Test Audiences and Studio's really know best don't they? And they don't take consideration of how much Cash is spent making the Original Audience happy? Ah Hollywood u really give me the shits...
A little backstory. Every time the Thing screams, it screams with the combined voices of every living being it has consumed and assimilated. So that scream at 2:03 has Edvard's voice in it somewhere.
More than the pain of it, what must it be like to completely lose who you are? To slip away into nothing as something else becomes you? That's why this death got me more than any of the others.
Watch the TH-cam clip, 'The Things'. It's the audio of a small written piece which is in first 'person', the Thing's perspective, that is. Really good concept. Helps us to understand the motivations of the alien.
worst thing is that you don't actually die tho. the thing allows your brain to continue to simulate you for as long as it needs to mimic you later and only takes control when it needs something.
You can still hear his muffled screams as he's slowly and violently being assimilated. You can even see his right eye move as a silent cry for help - "JUST BURN ME, END MY SUFFERING" - while his left eye is getting ripped apart.
The worst death In my mind. Impaled by a disturbing arm centipede, orally violated by tentacles then mercy kill by way of flamethrower. Kinda hard to beat that.
It is probably not a muffled scream of this guy, but the Thing which makes little noises. The Thing cells probably already took his brain under control and now he will stand up like Windows tried
The 1982 Palmer infected windows and windows trying to kick away or something and didn’t burn Palmer even though he thought mac had it all coved and did nothing just standing there with a working flamethrower
@Vyacheslav Ivanov Same I said he could've just jumped and fell on the floor landing on top of it. Something you know but did nothing bit scream. But i try amd put myself im the situation and I'd scream like a little girl too.
Raelynn Jones he was already dead the moment it pierced it skin ya goofball you think there gonna really contaminate themselves knowing he’s already infected the moment it’s claws dug into his arm? Hell nah
I'm talking about before it actually latched onto him the comments after his arm fell off everyone just watched him struggle with the thing until it was too late and then waited an eternity to burn him instead of putting him out of his misery since it was already too late it was the least they could do tbh
Yeah, when the infection is passed by a subtle touch, the victim feels little of anything other than numbness of the affected area, as the alien cells are made to work discreetly. But when the Thing is actively attacking you and needs to work fast, you can pretty much feel yourself being eaten alive cell by cell.
@@peterseaboldt1250 yeah it can't just infect you through a light touch though, it has to physically convert your cells one by one, there is never a scene in either movies where you can lightly brush the things skin and you're infected. Besides the "numbness" you're talking about is totally non-canon, in either movies it seems like people who are being assimilated either go into shock or are in massive trauma. I think this one was just so fast because it was so close to the brain of the host already, similar to the way it was done in the first movie when whats his face sticks his hand down the other guys mouth pretty late into the movie, and even then it still took time to assimilate.
I dunno. They said the cells eat and mimic any other foreign cell they find. That would imply bare skin touching bare skin as well since those are cells touching foreign cells.
Not only is the arm monster going for Kristoff Hivju one of the most horrible creatures in the series, his desperate screams of (understandable) panic really sell the TERROR of that moment, fantastic acting.
I remember when I first saw The Thing when I was 13 years old back in 2007. Years later I also showed it to my second cousin and then when the prequel came out we both watched that. To this day he still agrees that the Split-face Thing is the most disturbing Creature from the entire franchise.
Have to disagree with you there. While Split-Face is pretty disturbing, the Norris-Thing beats it by afar. Just offering my opinion though. No harsh feelings. lol
Yume 2kki Wiki Palmer thing was something else. I still say the Edvard Adam thing was more scarier only because of the victims involved. I felt bad for Adam bc he was helpless kicking and screaming as he got assimilated. Windows had a flamethrower and just stood there serving himself on a plate to the Palmer thing.
Honestly I think it's better this way I mean if you saw something like that your first reaction would either be to be scared stiff or run the fuck away in a panic If you think you'd walk up like a badass and chair shot it like stone cold Steve Austin then you're not only bullshitting us you're bullshitting yourself dude
Yeah but this isn’t like a slasher film where the characters are purposely written to do dumb shit. The Thing if anything is a suspenseful survival horror story where the characters have to survive from not only an shapeshifting alien creature but they also have to survive from themselves as any one of them could be the creature. Their reactions of fear and hesitation are genuine here.
People judge the prequel too harshly. 1. The Thing 1982 is probably the best sci fi horror movie ever made, on par with Alien. It was unlikely they would produce a better film. 2. CGI was forced onto the movie by the studio. Blame mainstream horror fans for not liking practical effects, not the movie makers.
True on both points.. The original is legendary and hard to be compared to. And there were a lot of (beautifull) practical effects made before the studio interference. Sad actually.
Lord Cthulhu That’s what I’ve been still haunted by. What test audiences want CGI over Practical Effects? Seriously? I still want to know who chose the audience for this film to this day especially after seeing all the hardwork that Amalgamated Dynamics did for this films practical effects and animatronics.
It was more how the Thing acts in the film that it choose bad moments to reveal itself while in the 1982 movie it only revealed itself when absolutely necessary: when it was discovered and attacked
Don't forget that this is a prequel, it covers the Things first encounter with humans so you could argue its acting a little irrationally for that reason. In the 1982 version it became more adapted to human behavior so behaves a lot smarter itself. Though I quite like the prequel so I'm probably a little biased, there's no question that the 1982 movie is considerably better.
This transformation is very similar to the Noris Thing, in that it seems involuntary. The Edvard-thing is injured and unconscious from the explosion, and it seems to start breaking apart into smaller things as an act of self-preservation, just like Noris. Once the Edvard-thing comes to, and realizes it's been outed, it grows the tentacle as not an act of offense, but defense, to keep everyone away. However, once it incapacitates Adam and Derek, and is aware of the flamethrower's malfunction, it takes the opportunity to assimilate with Adam, most-likely in an attempt to restore its lost mass from the explosion and transformation. After it has Adam, it immediately leaves the room to lick its wounds and creeps around the base. Its only after it has mostly-assimilated Adam that it goes on the offense, killing Sander, and finally attempts to kill Kate and Carter. It's also worth noting that the split-face thing seems to be the most aggressive form of the thing from both movies, and it has every right to be. It's not like it can play the imitation card anymore. It was exposed in front of everyone, and now its only chance for survival is to either kill everyone, or escape. I think that's why it takes on this quadrupedal form. Its fast and effective.
YOOOOO love this analysis, I hear people complaining about how the thing reacted, but honestly its justifiable Imo- Because I mean ontop of this super cool explanation this was its first encounter with humans, therfore you can argue that it didn't fully understand human beings. But maybe that's just me lol
It sprouted the battle-tentacle, because the rest of the body was completely stunned by the explosion and couldn't even stand up. Explosives are extremely effective against the Thing, wrecking it up badly. Hands ran away probably because they felt that the rest of the body cannot move and is about to be toasted. This Thing doesn't like to split apart, it seems to like to stick together and to combine several bodies into one super-monster when it can, like it did with Blair.
@@basenightx1464 Just use a nuke... because they just have those lying around. Even if they did, that would also mean their deaths as well, and most people aren't that immediately selfless.
@@basenightx1464 Also, there is no evidence that the flamethrower was made in China, and if it was, that doesn't automatically link to it being defective. Not all Chinese products are trashy, not even the majority are.
At least with Cell it looked like his victims were going through a lot less painful of an absorption. The Thing really just kept its victims as alive and conscious as possible, while Cell just went straight for the brain
@@mudkipzuzu I wouldn't say less painful, he literally stabs them in the midsection and absorbs their insides, also when it comes to absorbing humans Cell never went for the brain, He would always absorb them slowly while they were conscious.
The thing: flys* windows oh look a flying thing with its head split open a second later :tongue grabs him windows now: screaming in pain while being lifted and eatan
Thats what makes it so terrifying for me!! Like, if the thing thinks on a cellular level and just lives in vehicles essentially that are perfect copies of the ogs. Then the imitation brains would STILL be creating the consciousness of the ogs. The imitation would have no idea until the cells of the body start doing their own thing.
Nah. They explained in the novellization, that the Thing's cells go straight to the brain, alter it and "switch off" the person. The person is dead and the alien imposter is totally in control, keeping intact only the part of the brain with all the knowledge to use it to blend in.
I noticed something interesting looking closely at the transformation. It dropped both arms in the initial attack then grew two more. It used one leg as the materia to grow those two while the remaining leg split into several for stability, but were thin so it could have the upper body strength to overpower the dude on the ground. Interesting.
Yeah the ‘thing’ is it can’t really create more body mass without more material or energy so it’s gotta compartmentalize. You’re right in that it probably used one leg for the two new upper arms but I would guess that it also used quite a few of his organs too
the problem is that you know its cgi. it can be great cgi, but the fact you say "thats pretty good cgi" already means its failed. the best cgi are the effects you literally have no idea at all about, and only brought to your attention when someone points it out. unfortunately no matter how good the cgi could be in this, it was destined to become outdated, one way or another
@gthyok The most stupid comment here is your own, and it is simple by the fact that you don´t even know that CGI stands for "computer generated imagen". and the comment of Henry about it and how they become outdated fast in comparition with practical effects used in old movies wich are still hold up even after so many years.
@gthyok I'm the moderator for replying to comments to a year older. Let's all remember the reason we are here, we like this movie, and the original so let's get along and be nice. That will be all thanks.
The Edvard thing was probably the best thing-out of the movie. 2:09 being the most horrific scene. Imagine being Adam at that point and having this grunting monstrosity trudging after you.
1:54. Now THAT is a scary image. Just imagine yourselves in Adam's place. You lay there on the floor, bleeding, because the Thing injured you, and watch as a friend you knew was slowly transforming into a parasitic monster right in front of your eyes. Forget the fact that this is CGI'd and just pretend that this is happening to you in real life. Now that is sure to get your heart pumping with fear.
People tend to hatd this movie alot because of the Cgi being applied later. I can't blame them for wanting it to resemble the original more but let's face it the Cgi itself wasn't half bad. Some small elements aside I think the story is pretty faithfull to the original movie, especially the events that happen at the outpost and origin of the split face thing. The only element I didn't agree in changing was the fact that the ship at the end melted the ice above it while in the original it was clearly stated that it was the researchers who blew the ice on top of the ship
well actually it isn't really that faithful to the original, this prequel is more of just a scifi monster thriller because of how much damage the thing can do. It comes running after people chasing them and in this scene, it literally attacks everyone else even though it only has the one body worth of biomass which was never really done except for the blood test scene, which it only happened in cause they were all tied up. Honestly the original john carpenter movie was a lot about how you can't trust people if they have an agenda that does not align with yours, and you can't see into somebody to know who they are. The thing really only attacked in private and as much as possible tried to stay quiet and hidden amongst the humans until it had enough biomass it could use some to attack with while some stayed safe. This movie is just a monster thriller mess where as soon as its caught it goes all TENTACLES TILL YOU DIE. like if it could do that in the original movie it would have done that a bit more, just cause they were able to make it more movable and "powerful" because they could animate the dickens out of it and not use practical props, does not mean you change the formula for why the original was such a classic horror film. Why do you think people who love love the original don't really like this one? it does not have the same feel whatsoever except mistrust. This is the kind of prequel that lost the heart of what made the original a good movie, and a good horror movie. you weren't afraid of the thing because it could tentacle you in 3 seconds and kill you like the token black guy in the prequel, you were afraid of it because you don't know whether or not the thing is childs in the end of the first movie, and the inability to see who the thing is until the gory super practical change to the thing's regular form that left you with a chill down your spine.
@@T3AR_HD I respect and get what you say but as long as prequels go there had been way worse ones than this. Yes it's true that the prequel is not nearly as atmospheric or a chilling slow burner classic like the original, I agree with that. But if you compare it to other prequels then I think the creators had enough love for the first movie to attempt to connect it, I respected how small details were a call back to the original, like the axe in the door and other stuff that wasn't necessarily relevant to the story. The Alien prequels haven't been doing a great job for the franchise either and those are directed by the same person who made the original 1979 Alien, i enjoyed them but i don't think they work that well as coherent prequels to the original movie
@@T3AR_HD ...maybe the thing reacted more silently in the first movie because it adapted to how the humans reacted to its presence in this movie, it somehow learned that the best way to assimilate is to do it discreetly.
This movie will never match up to the original, but this scene will always be the best scene in the entire movie...at least for me. The Thing is already a horrific being, but its this scene that will forever make me happy that such a being capable of assimilating others into itself (hopefully) doesn't exist 1:50 Its not just the fact that its another form of assimilation...but that it takes you, while you're alive, off to an unknown fate.
NIGHT shadow They actually used special effects but then removed it because it looked fake..In the some of the scenes like Juiliet getting assimilated used some practical effects
@@galiasvirtual4078 they wanted to use practical effects and they did you can watch some of those scenes on here but the studio was stupid enough to think at the time that it needed a fuckton of cgi
@Lola Banks:Shortly after that scene, Kate and Carter recognized Sander Halvorsen shrieking as another one of those "Things" discovered him hiding...I don't believe it was the Edvard/Adam one attacking Halvorsen. Those critters could apparently "split off" when they got big enough to...or perhaps "ripe"...like a crab molting. But clearly, those critters were proliferating faster than these people could cope!
I love them both. The prequel uses stop motion animation too but then CGI was used for the final edits. The 1982 Thing was stop motion animation all the way and it's also brilliant. Mary and Kurt were both badasses with strong supporting crews. I watched this last night. Tonight it's The Thing! Never get tired of it.
My favorite thing about this movie is you can tell the crew who made it were truly fans of Carpenter's film. They leave almost no stone unturned. Watching the original, every time you ask yourself what the fuck happened here" this film answers that question. Probably one of the greatest prequels ever made
The directors of 'Thing 11' said that they had to acknowledge the Carpenter movie in order to make this movie. In fact, the opening scenes were shot just a few miles away from 'Thing 82's filming location in Stewart, British Columbia.
Watch Harbinger Down. The effects team from this film were disappointed with the overuse of CGI and so they went and did their own movie with effects just like in John Carpenter's movie
Fun Fact: The Test Audience hated the original ending as-well as the use of Practical Effects which btw look amazing! They were gory as hell but yet the Studio has to listen to the Test Audience who know nothing about what made the Original a Classic... All I can say is... Well done. The Original Ending was splendid as it revealed the The Thing was one of the many species collected by the Pilot Alien which was sadly cut...(Looked gooey btw)... I don't understand modern audiences.. They don't want Practical but they want CGI which looks nowhere as good and seems to cost more! Why don't they use miniatures which btw COST LESS (I learnt that from a low-budget Film enthusiast & Professor)...
They were firs going for practical effects, they had done 75% off the movie and the studio changed them to cgi and rest was shot that way too cause the studio wanted it... Thats sad. They actually tried to make it good and studio was like: Good? Good?? We dont want no good we want money! Well you can get them both if you know what youre doing. This one was not good and didnt make money but it wasnt the crews or actors fault this time.
It's the Test Audience's fault, they didn't want Practical and the studio had to listen and plus they didn't like the Original ending as it was "Too Confusing".. The original ending was that the THING was Revealed to be one of the various species on both the crashed Spacecraft... As the Pilot (It was removed, fucking awful idea) was collecting them, Maybe it would've collected some Humans as it was nearby Earth to lose control?
It is generally said that women tend get their emotions get to their heads,if that was a man he wouldnt stand there hesitating, worst mistake of this movie is casting a woman as a main character imo
Everyone complaining that this isn't how The Thing operates, remember in Carpenters film they find all of these people like this, the twin monster all burnt and stuff, so they really were written into a corner to have the base end up how it appears in the original movie. I just check it up to The Thing not understanding how tenacious humans are and instead just figured their fear would be enough to give it enough time to incapacitate everyone.
Flying Rancid M00n Fish Oh shut up. It’s not even that bad. Granted nothing compares to the original movie, this wasn’t a bad film to help explain what happened before Carpenter’s original. One thing I cannot stand is obnoxious over-exaggerating film critics.
I feel bad for that guy on the floor, the thing literally stabbed him and then proceeded to fuse it's body with that guy. Plus the guy who's basically the thing spider literally is scary
Conor Tacopina You can blame the producers for that. Majority of the film was initially done using practical effects, but top brass thought it was a good idea to scrap that and replace it with CGI going against the advice of the makeup artists. Lo and behold, it is safe to say that they should’ve listened to their crew.
Say what you will about this movie, but I will never forget the screams of that dude on the floor, or how he yelled for them to "burn it". Whoever that actor is did a great job in this scene, it's probably the most disturbing part in the movie.
Yes, later then cut it in half with the axe and then burn it with the flamethrower. You can see the same axe in the original when Doc and MacReady visits the ruined Norwegian base.
It seems like no one (not even IMDB) is ever able to explain what really goes on here: according to IMDB, the creature "assumes the appearance of its victims". The creature doesn't assume anything: it is the victim that becomes the "thing", slowly and without ever noticing until it's too late. If the thing just "assumed the appearance of its victims", then you would see a lot of dead bodies eveywhere, but you don't. Once you have physical contact with it, its cells eat yours up until the whole of your body is the thing. Do you agree?
The Entity however, we do see that the thing uses its body as a whole to literally ingest humans or other animals whole, digest their bodies and replicate their cells that way
Have you seen either the 1982 remake or the 2011 remake? It assimilates it’s victims by replicating their cells. How, is never revealed but it’s assumed through physical contact. Then the cells begin replicating and the person unknowingly becomes the Thing.
3:03 NOTE TO FRIENDS, FAMILY, CO-WORKERS & ACQUAINTANCES ..should you come upon my person being agonisingly assimilated by an Alien Entity..please..do NOT hesitate in burning me!
Why can't anyone just say 'wow that was horrifyingly good looking' instead of complaining about this. I prefer no CGI but I won't bash the movie for using it. It's still damn good.
I really really wish we could get the version of the movie that had mostly practical FX with minimal CG to hide the seams, I know it exists somewhere on some server, man I wish we could get that version, it would prolly make people who love the first like myself, to love this one once we got to see the real version the FX team wanted us to see!!!...
The CGI wasn’t actually that bad here. But the part where the thing rubs it’s face onto the other guy really needed to be practical effects, based on the behind the scenes we saw it looked amazing
The arm thing’s legs were stabbing into him from the moment it grew them to the moment it reached his face. The guy was already done for before he even realized what was happening.
Why would The Thing choose to attack here surrounded by guys and when one has a flamethrower practically pointing at it. By this point this Thing should know what a flamethrower can do. It couldn't have possibly known that the weapon would just happen to malfunction at that moment. All other Things from both movies would only attack when they felt safe to do so or were forced to reveal themselves. This is the least safe position the Thing could have possibly attacked from. In the original Norris was forced to react defensively when it was receiving powerful shocks from a defibrillator, Palmer was forced into aggression when the test showed that it was an imitation, even the dog waited until it was in an advantageous position before attacking the other dogs and whoever it infected first by going into his room when it first arrived on the base. The dog also probably had lower intelligence as it was just a dog thing and with lower biomass. The other Things in this movie also typically waited until they were safe or not in imminent danger to reveal themselves.
I do not see it as the planned attack, I see similarity with Norris-Thing. The Norris's heart fails, it lost consciousness and reacts instinctively to a supposed attack (defibrilator). There is the thing's body hurt by the explosion, lose consciousness and instinctively seperate for its protection.
See, you are noticing that this is a monster thriller scifi, and the original was about espionage and not being able to trust those around you until it's too late and they have you alone to assimilate you into something unknown, which is WAY scarier than a bunch of screaming meat trying to consume you like a giant upset McDonald's patty.

This scene enraged me more than it scared me, because I can somewhat relate to the fact that there should always be a piece of s-it of an obstacle in your path, every time you want to do something. Because, as the guy with the flamethrower was about to flame the person who was morphing into that monster, his luck found the "right time" to malfunction, and so his flamethrower wasn't working properly just at that moment🤢, when the situation was critical, and so 3 people unluckily lost their lives just because of that.... 😢And for the person who got fused, I could literally feel the fear and rage boiling inside of him, in wonder as for why wasn't his friend burning that creature already, how sad...😭
Yes, almost the entire 2011 film is based on the 1982 film, for example, this Edvard-Thing scene is a combination of the Norris-Thing and Palmer-Thing scenes. With norris, both become unconscious, both kill / assimilate a partner while they are unconscious and both are divided into several parts. With palmer, both Things unexpectedly revealed, a main character cannot kill him due to a badly functioning flamethrower, and both kill a mate (Jonas in 2011, Windows in 1982).

No harsh feelings. lol

That's how white people work
@Christopher Norris in horror movies
F*#king Test Audiences.. They really know how to mess sh*t up..

Thats why i like the precuel. Since I watched the 1982 version. I have the context that they lost against The Thing
👍👍👍👍👍👍good cmt
It sprouted the battle-tentacle, because the rest of the body was completely stunned by the explosion and couldn't even stand up. Explosives are extremely effective against the Thing, wrecking it up badly. Hands ran away probably because they felt that the rest of the body cannot move and is about to be toasted. This Thing doesn't like to split apart, it seems to like to stick together and to combine several bodies into one super-monster when it can, like it did with Blair.
In both movies is the flame thrower the least reliable piece of equipment...

Scariest thing to me about this thing is the possibility that the imitation actually thinks it's a person until it's body goes wild
Yep, and you lose all humanity.
Broh... i really loved your comment... you deserves a like
Yeah the ‘thing’ is it can’t really create more body mass without more material or energy so it’s gotta compartmentalize. You’re right in that it probably used one leg for the two new upper arms but I would guess that it also used quite a few of his organs too
The cgi here isn't all that bad tbh. But nothing compares to the original.
the problem is that you know its cgi. it can be great cgi, but the fact you say "thats pretty good cgi" already means its failed. the best cgi are the effects you literally have no idea at all about, and only brought to your attention when someone points it out. unfortunately no matter how good the cgi could be in this, it was destined to become outdated, one way or another
Yet the writing is funny
@gthyok The most stupid comment here is your own, and it is simple by the fact that you don´t even know that CGI stands for "computer generated imagen". and the comment of Henry about it and how they become outdated fast in comparition with practical effects used in old movies wich are still hold up even after so many years.

Simply unforgivable that the guy's flame thrower malfunctions just like MacReady's did in the original. Better plot writing would've served them well
@@T3AR_HD ...maybe the thing reacted more silently in the first movie because it adapted to how the humans reacted to its presence in this movie, it somehow learned that the best way to assimilate is to do it discreetly.

The way the Thing looked at him before it transformed was so scary
It seems like no one (not even IMDB) is ever able to explain what really goes on here: according to IMDB, the creature "assumes the appearance of its victims". The creature doesn't assume anything: it is the victim that becomes the "thing", slowly and without ever noticing until it's too late. If the thing just "assumed the appearance of its victims", then you would see a lot of dead bodies eveywhere, but you don't. Once you have physical contact with it, its cells eat yours up until the whole of your body is the thing. Do you agree?

Yes you are right completely. It was also like that in the original. No dead bodies of the originals, therefore, assimilation is what the thing does
The Entity however, we do see that the thing uses its body as a whole to literally ingest humans or other animals whole, digest their bodies and replicate their cells that way
Have you seen either the 1982 remake or the 2011 remake?
It assimilates it’s victims by replicating their cells. How, is never revealed but it’s assumed through physical contact. Then the cells begin replicating and the person unknowingly becomes the Thing.

practical effects is the best way to proceed
Or it might just be a bad movie.

I get why they stand still. But you’d be thrashing around, slamming into things, doing anything other than standing there screaming as a mutant arm tries to face hugger you.
During very brief intermittent moments, this movie is actually good.
Is it me or is 3:20 an exact mirror shot of when Mac killed Windows?
Yes, almost the entire 2011 film is based on the 1982 film, for example, this Edvard-Thing scene is a combination of the Norris-Thing and Palmer-Thing scenes. With norris, both become unconscious, both kill / assimilate a partner while they are unconscious and both are divided into several parts. With palmer, both Things unexpectedly revealed, a main character cannot kill him due to a badly functioning flamethrower, and both kill a mate (Jonas in 2011, Windows in 1982).
Window just standing there all like Mac you have this and then a few seconds later windows is infected
It is.
Nice video& movie
The Thing vs T-3000
Not gonna lie. The monster is pretty creepy and scary. Well done.
One of the best movies ever. In my opinion it's better than 1982's version.
Me too! I agree 100% with you
bruh how could you think this
Pretty disturbing when being burned alive is considered a "mercy" death.
