  • Here is my review of the RODE NT1 5th Generation large-diaphragm condenser microphone. The earlier versions of the NT1 are used in a lot of studios by serious professional musicians, voiceover actors, podcasters, and audiobook narrators. So we start with a really good mic anyway.
But the 5th generation has a LOT of improvements and new features. In many ways it is an entirely different mic. For one thing, it is a "hybrid" mic. That means you can use it like it has always been used - as a standard XLR (3-pin) microphone. But now you can ALSO use it as a USB mic. It does both!
So you don't actually need to buy a separate recording interface to use the mic if you just use it as a USB mic. But then there is the revolutionary thing about its USB mode - 32 Bit Float! That is a new technology that makes it impossible to ruin your audio by clipping/distorting when you overload it. All you do is reduce the level of the overloaded part in an editor, and all the clipping goes away! It is INSANE. Check it out in the video. And to find out more or buy one from B&H, click here: homerecording.click/rode-nt1-... (aff link).
If you prefer to read (though there is still an audio comparison you can listen to) instead of watch me on video talking about this, check out my post here: www.homebrewaudio.com/35715/m...

Would you be interested in making more tutorials on how to properly edit using Reaper for vocals recorded with the NT1 5th Gen? 🙂

Not sure what you mean. I have several Reaper tutorials in the playlist here: th-cam.com/play/PLW86UjDxIdjRGkD6UDjjRYWk3G7O5QbuP.html the only thing different about the NT1, 5th Gen would be if you went into the red (level too high while recording) it could be fixed simply by lowering the waveform to below 0dB in Reaper as shown in this video. Was there something else you are looking for? I'd be happy to do something else.

Actually the one thing I didn't show in the video was HOW I put Reaper into "32-bit float mode." First go to ‘File’ > ‘Project Settings’ > ‘Media’ > ‘Recording’ and under the ‘WAV bit depth’ dropdown, select ’32 bit FP’. Then in Preferences>Audio Device>Input Device, under the ‘ASIO Driver’ dropdown, select 'NT1 5th Gen (Float)’.

Hello! I see that you managed to launch 32 bit float on Windows.
I’m struggling for three days trying to make the same. In the beginning ASIO just didn’t launch. Gave me errors.
After that I completely reinstalled OC and deleted all data from my drives, then ASIO finally launched but… mic still behaves like it has 24 bit output. Clipping audio is not recoverable. Also it applies DSP effects, which he shouldn’t do in 32 bit mode. I can disable them, but the fact that they are working indicates that something wrong.
Real ASIO should work completely independent from windows settings. But Rode’s driver seems faulty.

Hello Ken. Reading your article, you said that you can use the Windows version of Audacity to record, but on their website, it says that you can only do so with the Mac version of Audacity. Are they just slow on updating their information? Thank you! Great video!

I'm not sure. Things are changing quickly. I'll have to try it on Windows tomorrow and I'll let you know.

I think I missed this in the video - ASIO is required on a Windows computer in order for 32-bit float to work with the NT1. And since Audacity cannot use ASIO drivers, it cannot make use of 32-bit float. But it does work on Mac with Audacity. Sorry for that confusion!
