The thing that these highlights don't show is the rest of the game. From minute 1, Willard pandered to the likes of Ince and McMannanam, he was so embarrassingly on Liverpool side, every minute challenge by a Barnsley player was given in Liverpool 's favour... Every team has a bad ref... But how many refs are that bad that fans are running onto the pitch trying to assault him? . Sad day for football but reflects the elitism of the game then and now.
Not a Barnsley fan, but it was sad when they got relegated at end of that season...during 2nd part of that season. They had some great results, but problem was, their awful start to season meant they were always going to struggle to avoid relegation it was the terrible start to the season that really cost them...
They finished 9th in the 2nd half of the season. 9th! Barnsley! The sendings off here, and a win and a draw more from that wretched first half of the season and things would have been very different. Who knows where they might be now had that happened.
Not a chance pal!. Its it's been 22 years since the one and only stint and it be 10 years if they were lucky to get back . Always remember them and bolton being relegated that year, bolton last game 98
the ref gave liverpool the game reduced barnsley down to 9 men and still exellent football was played had they put on gjorgi hristov earlier the world class player i thin
8 men. And all suspended afterwards right when they were needed most. If the season had started in January, Barnsley would have been 9th and we looked very competitive at home after the early awful start to the season. The ref did us out of the game, and who knows maybe our Premier League status that season.
Gary Willard produced 2 biased ref performance's that season against Barnsley let Di Canio ref game at Hillsborough in December when he should have been dismissed and this was a disgrace let Ince, Mcmanaman get away with everything set out to make sure Barnsley lost that day, even had to sneak him out of the ground
Neither have I and I was there, the fog was atrocious 😂 still haven’t seen Colin Walker’s goal that put us one up as it was down the Spion Kop end. The first game at Anfield is on TH-cam
Was on Under Cosh recently, swung for Ince who apparently had been goading him all game (surprise surprise?) and hit Redknapp by mistake. Think it's Ince you can see him gesturing at off camera as he walks off pitch.
Completely wrong he refereed 25 more games before retiring, 4 that season and 21 more season 98/99 . All premier league games. He passed away last week from leukaemia. R. I. P
Not sure what was so wrong here, yes, 2nd red card was harsh, looked accidental, but 1st, Owen was clean through. Sloppy defending from Liverpool, typical of Liverpool around this time, why they never won the league.

@@thegreathadoken6808they would've probably got relegated the following season like Bradford did
I hope Barnsley make it back to the premier league one day 🤪

How come these highlights don't show the ref having to abandon the game temporarily?
Theres me celebrating with dad after redferns opener hah.
Gary Willard's entry for the Most Pompous and Incompetent Referee in History competition.

Are talking of The League Cup Semi-Final ... it was a (and still is) a two legged Simi-Final ... Not a Replay!.
Those 2 red cards are shocking
First red card was correct. Second red was an awful decision. Third who knows. Must have been something said
He smacked Jamie Redknapp 😂😂😂😂

He never refereed another game again in the top flight
Completely wrong he refereed 25 more games before retiring, 4 that season and 21 more season 98/99 . All premier league games. He passed away last week from leukaemia. R. I. P

“Second red card was harsh, looked accidental”.
That is what was wrong. How are you unsure about that??

Twitter brought me here.
I wonder how much the victims paid the referee that day? Utter filth.
