Here's a better idea for what could've been done, instead: A huge concert starring as many living Disney legends as possible (real or otherwise) that tells the story of each era of Disney with music
I just started watching your reactions and been digging them! Given my long-time love of Disney's animation, I wasn't too thrilled with 'Wish' myself, despite getting thru it just fine. Really felt like it was thrown together hastily to meet the studio's 100th anniversary and was focus grouped to death (based on behind the scenes stories I've read), when there was potential for a really cool cosmic fantasy story buried in there methinks. I would like to point out that the opening of 'Shrek' was lampooning the classic-style book openings of many earlier Disney films like 'Snow White' and 'Cinderella' (in case you might not have seen those/or in a while), which the opening of 'Wish' was more paying homage to than 'Shrek' - among many other references, many of which I found unnecessary. But I see why one would make the connection, though.
Thank you so much! 😻 Happy to hear you've been enjoying them! Yeah, it really does feel it was just a hot mess tbf. It had potential for sure but yeah it was just too messy. haha I did think it might've been the opening of Snow White but wasn't sure and Shrek was the second thing that came to mind since it's a parody of these films 😹 which fits the vibe of this.... hot mess 😹
In a glance, Asha does seem to have a valid point about the wishes... in execution however, there is barely any support to her side. If you look closely, we aren't shown why she is right. The people in Rosas are happy and live fulfilling lives. Like, one of her friends is successful at baking cookies. People (including Asha) didn't have any problem with the system and with Magnifico just granting their wishes, except in that later scene where they started to question Magnifico because of plot contrivance. Like, everything would have been great and peaceful if Asha just doesn't do anything. Now, with their Sorcerer King out of the picture, their island Kingdom doesn't have a protector against outside forces that keep the island safe. Not like pirates, evil kings and kingdoms, evil sorcerers, and among others, doesn't exist in this world, right? That is why Asha appears to be selfish, because she is the one who actually messing things up, because Magnifico would not grant her grandpa's wish. Reminds me a lot of The Emoji Movie where the supposed protagonist, a Meh emoji, is actually messing things up and almost got the phone wiped out and everyone deleted. The movie wants us to see that the protagonist is in the right while showing us how things are going wrong because of the protagonist's actions. In most Disney movies, the protagonist is actually in the wrong. Either they approach what they want in the wrong way (like with Aladdin who thinks he needs to impress Jasmine), or they actually needed something else entirely (like with Simba who needs to face his fears and accept his responsibility instead of avoiding them). It is this interplay that the story explores. We are supposed to just side with Asha and see that she is right just because she is the protagonist, without really doing the effort of showing why this is. Now, a protagonist who is actually in the right is a valid way of doing things and that is exactly what they do with Snow White. The protagonist then often represents the virtue the movie is trying to explore. In Snow White it is about kindness. It is her kindness that makes the huntsman spare her life and then befriend the animals and dwarfs. It is about how her kindness bring joy to people around her and enable them to be a better version of themselves. It is a simple story about kindness. With Asha however... what is going here exactly? It is about the virtue of wishing? That isn't a virtue. She doesn't even have her own wish (that ultra vague one about "more than this" just doesn't count in my book). Working hard to achieve your dreams? At no point in the story is she shown working hard to achieve her dreams or encouraging others to do so. She is actually fine with Magnifico just granting them and even talk about how great Magnifico is for doing that in the opening song... until she learned that he would not be granting her grandpa's wish. So, it is not really about working for your dreams at all; it is about getting what you want. And even then, she wished on the stars which comes down to help her grant her wish, you know the complete opposite of the supposed message. Magnifico actually is the one who represents this better. He study and work hard to learn magic and build the Kingdom of Rosas, to fulfill his dream of creating a place where people could live happily and with no worries... with a bonus of him granting someone's wish once a month. How could they mess things up this badly. This story is overall a disjointed and hollow mess, where things just happen as plot demands and lacking in any substance.
I totally agree with you that everyone seems pretty happy with their lives and just going about their day. Especially since the first major song is saying how amazing the place is and all lol and yeah I agree that a lot of protagonists sometimes approach things in an unhealthy way - which one could argue it's part of their flaws as characters/people. We all make mistakes and do things we shouldn't do even if our intentions were in the right place. But back to Wish - the whole thing felt like a mess to me in general, especially the more I thought about it after I watched it. I've also heard people argue that they got rid of one sorcerer who grants wishes and replaced it with another one (Asha since it's the whole Fairy Godmother reference) which makes it feel like they're right back where they started - one person who has the power to grant wishes. So what's really changed? And I agree, it felt very hollow and I didn't particularly care for the characters lol What would've been better if Asha was aimed to be the actual antagonist and Magnifico would be the protagonist 😹
I think the other thing that makes the king turn evil, was when asha accidentally opens the seal to the book, some of its influence affects the king more directly, and thats when he has his heel turn. He probably mightve granted the grampas wish or done something different entirely.
I enjoyed the goats voice, it sounds like the same actor that plays clayface in the harley quin series, and to me, that makes it more fun. Theres some loopholes in the film, but i enjoyed what they were trying to do. Just having fun with it. Its kinda like a prequel to all the stories, hundred of yrs before snowwhite.
aww I haven't seen the Harley Quin sereis.. I want to tho! and that's totally fair that that's a reason why it made it more fun for you and that you enjoyed the film as is haha
@@TheCatPrideCinema I like the part where he asks "who talks like that" when the deer sings "who i are" ...which does rhyme but the lyric is stupid, also everything is added up as garbage lol
Not only is this film underwhelming as all hell I find its message to be a dangerous one. Said message being: *"If you don't get what you want, even if it's for a good reason/cause, RUIN the person who dared to tell you 'No'."* What the f*ck kind of message is that to send to KIDS? Did a gaggle of angry mean bitter Karens write this script?!

How did puss in boots 2 handle the wishing story way better than Disney???
