I would also argue that inflation has played a role. The prices of some of these items are ridiculous for, say, a colored powder, and most people can't afford to buy everything they like, which causes people to be more picky and choosey about which items to spend money on, that in turn makes it hard to keep up with everything

Yes money definitely played the role in why I don’t buy like I used to , cost of living has skyrocketed and in Canada the Carbon Tax and constant interest rates going up on home owners has definitely limited my spending. When 12 freaking eggs cost 7.99 😮feeding my Family has become more expensive than ever . I have to put my wants aside and focus on the needs of my Family not my wants .

I have never and cannot imagine not loving makeup. All the makeups. I think it’s because people like you and me love makeup for makeup! Not for what’s “popular” or “trending” or to make other people happy. It’s about genuine love of makeups!!

I would say a large part of why makeup has become less fun to some is due to the fact that there's so much so fast and it's hard for anything to feel fresh and exciting when there are a lot of the same type of product all being launched at the same exact time, like for instance the bright pink blush. a million bright pink blushes were launched within such a small time-frame that it gets to be so much for the average consumer to try to keep up with. It's also hard to find innovative products that are actually good. Even when something seems new and exciting, oftentimes the "innovation" just doesn't work out or ends up creating a product that confuses people. All this to say, I myself am still very much in love with makeup and enjoy following the new releases. Have a wonderful day Angie!

I agree. I feel like there are just too many releases and too much in general. As a consumer, it is overwhelming. I love my makeup, but I am definitely done buying things for a while.

      @veggierunner79 ปีที่แล้ว +20

I completely agree. I haven't bought makeup for about 4 months and don't feel like I have missed anything. When the bright pink blushes all launched I realized I already have the Dior one and rarely reach for it. Why do I need anymore? I think most of us makeup enthusiasts realize we have an excessive amount of products already and are trying to love those more.

      100% agree
I am somewhat new to this community. I remember when there were just a few launches a year and now it's sooo much I can never keep up. I look at new stuff and think "already have it, so don't need it"

I will always love makeup. I enjoy doing it everyday, for me! It’s my quiet time and it’s so therapeutic for me. I will NEVER be a makeup minimalist. I know I have a more makeup than one person needs but it makes me happy to see it and to know that I can do whatever I want. I have seen so many of the content creators I love declutter over half of their collection and stop doing as much makeup content. I’m so happy you’re here to stay. I get a lot of inspiration from you. ❤ I will say I have become more conscious and picky of what I purchase since I have so much and there is so much releasing.

I haven’t stopped loving makeup…..I’ve just stopped buying makeup…..😊 There comes a point when you have enough, and the new things aren’t THAT different from what you have already.
I bought an obscene amount of makeup during the pandemic, and still haven’t used quite a bit of it. I’m not proud of that. 😔

I’ve definitely slowed down buying this year and it honestly makes me sick knowing how much I’ve spent in the past 3 years. Financially I had to stop but I also don’t have the space nor do I need everything either. In my earliest memories I was obsessed with makeup. I wore makeup to school when I was 10 or 11. My teacher rubbed my cheek and asked if my mother knew I was wearing “rouge” and I replied that she had given it to me. I would always spend my time in the drugstore makeup aisles and looking at magazines. I always wear a full face. Not because I can’t go out without, but because I love the process. And everyday if I’m having a moment or a bad day, I look at myself I. The mirror and I see the good blend I’ve done or some glitter or color and it makes me smile. When the TH-cam community became popular I didn’t even want to watch because I wanted to be my own inspiration. I got sucked in with product reviews!

I started out with a Makeup Kit, these black boxes with little drawers etc - I wasnt even a teenager. I just loved playing. And it never stopped. When TH-cam showed me that there´s more people like me out there, I felt home. And it hasn´t stopped. I will never not gasp when I see eyeshadow, I will never stop buying red lipsticks and I will never not browse the drugstore or second hand high end or indie. I just love it^^
And when something is coming in the mail, it´s like christmas - I watch all the videos about the item I´m gonna get and I´m getting all giggly. Maybe it´s about the inner child. Mine is LOUD^^

I am 44 and I remember being about 8 BEGGING my mom to put make up on me! It wasnt long before she was letting me play with it, but I couldn't wear it out of the house until I was in 9th grade. It was too early for the internet, but I remember trying to copy the looks in fashion magazines and pretty much learning how to do it by looking for tips. I had my 1st kid in 2002 and missed the whole youtube makeup starting as I had other priorities. I never stopped loving or using makeup, but I didn't have the luxury of buying a lot new or the time to play and experiment. Then, I went to my 1st Ulta and saw a Juvia's place eyeshadow palette. Didn't want to buy if it was crap, looked up a review and found Angie and the rest is history 😆 Angie made me remember how much I loved playing with makeup and color and now I have the collection of my dreams. Thank you so much, Angie

This has made me realise why your channel is the one beauty one that stuck for me. I'd drift towards beauty TH-cam every now and then before but because I'd stumble across a lot of the bigger channels during the height of it I'd always end up really only enjoying PR hauls to see the fun new things. No hate for soft, neutral browns and hints of subtle shimmer and I do enjoy those too, but I've always loved playing with eyeshadow so those would get repetitive and boring fast. Your content is so far from that, you have fun with everything products have to offer and try something different every time. It's so easy to feel your love for make up through what you share with us and it always just makes me want to play with what I have even more because you amplify the love I already have and inspire me to try different combinations or colours I hadn't thought of before

I definitely haven't stopped loving makeup. I have been obsessed with makeup for well over 20 years now, long before TH-cam. I used to collect all the "off the wall" colors from Mac and urban decay as singles before palettes were really popular!

  • @UnboxLili88
    @UnboxLili88 ปีที่แล้ว +78

I've slowed down on buying makeup for financial reasons, as well as having just too much to get use out of. But that prompted me to start going through my collection to wear things I hadn't in a while, to start trying to get at least a small dip into the pans so everything didn't look practically untouched. And getting use out of it has been so much more satisfying than constantly buying more and then feeling guilty about adding yet another thing I'll never finish. I'm still loving makeup, but when I see something new, I try to point out (to myself) the things about it that are redundant for my collection and why it's not perfect for me as a way to talk myself out of being tempted.

I have always loved makeup and can’t see myself ever falling out of that love. I suffer from anxiety quite a lot and the 15 minutes I spend on my makeup in the morning is a fantastic grounding experience. And I also just love to play with colours and brushes. The whole latte makeup trend I have already lived through in my twenties when it was popular last time and nowdays I just want to be more experimental. Makeup just makes me happy.

  • @Kyto0047
    @Kyto0047 ปีที่แล้ว +63

I don’t think it’s that I stopped loving makeup, it is more that the market became super over saturated, and many products are just redundant at this point. It’s also become difficult to launch a product, due to that redundancy. The last “launch”, where I was like, OMG I HAVE to buy that, was the Odens Eye holiday duo palettes. I haven’t hit that level of enthusiasm with any launch thus far this year. Cracking that code gets more and more difficult with time, due to desensitization of makeup in general.

I haven't always been into makeup, but I've always been into art. Makeup has become my artistic outlet in my adult years, and I think it's saving me a little money since I don't have to buy canvas or nice paper, lol. I now have a fairly large collection, and I use it primarily before bed. I love experimenting with different colors, textures, and application techniques without the pressure or the time constraints of needing to wear it out and about. My spark of joy from makeup has definitely not diminished yet.

For me I have always loved make up but there wasn’t really much here in New Zealand. MAC was still the biggest thing only a couple of years ago. I started watching TH-cam just because I was looking for a tutorial for a way to make myself look special when I was going to a wedding. I stumbled on this community and instantly fell in love and learned so much more and learned about all the other brands both indie and main stream. I have been a make up lover for years now but it’s because I still don’t feel the need to wear it, but I enjoy the process of just sitting down and making myself feel better for the day. I think people need to remember to wear make up for yourself not for others, and not feel the pressure to always have the newest thing. Some of my favourite videos are people using older products, it helps inspire me to use my own products differently.😊

I graduated HS in 1999 - I only ever wore a lipstick and mascara in HS and the lipstick was only for "special" things. I didn't really get into make-up until my latter 20s. Even then, I was pretty awful. Remember how we didn't blend _anything?_ I went through a horrendous bout of depression in the early-teens and discovered make-up channels on YT. It ignited a love for bright, fun make-up looks. Do I need a full face? Not really, at 42 my skin is the best it's ever been. It's the eyeshadows for me. I now have a pretty substantial collection and I'm only purchasing if something fills a hole and most of the time, I can dupe new releases out. I'm not less interested in make-up, I just don't really care all that much about base products and I have a good sized collection at this point.

Same! I discovered beauty YT during my biggest bout of depression and during that time it was something to focus on that didn't make me feel apathetic after a few minutes. And when I was getting better, it was both a routine and something creative to do. And even though I wear makeup every day to work, it doesn't feel necessary - I do it because I love it and I get excited thinking about what colourful shade to wear on my eyes the next day😄 I don't have anyone that likes makeup like I do in my real life so internet is the place to be😁
Also, I like knowing what is out there and thinking about how I can get this look with my own things or if it could be something I'll like. Or if I need that new shifty, sparkly eyeshadow😅

I still love makeup! I’m totally obsessed! My recent purchase was the flower punk palette, been wanting for ages and found on Depop uk. I’m having a day out this Saturday and have been trying some looks, trying which foundation I’m gonna use and have it all layed out ready! I’m dying my hair to refresh it on Fri night, having a facial Saturday morning with all my lovely face stuff. I can’t wait! I love my vast collection of make up and will never grow bored! My next purchases are the stone and rock from odens eye and the delicious delights from cosmic brushes when it restocks. I’m a make up junkie at 57! Thank you for your lovely video I always enjoy watching😆😆👍👍

And there was no one and still no one around me that uses makeup the way I do. It was SO EXCITING finding this community. It opened the world to brands and indie brands and their amazing products. I still LOVE makeup. I haven't been wearing it as much lately because I'm doing muay Thai almost every day of the week and then night shifts straight after, and I was so sad not wearing something colourful for a week. I really want to do a look tomorrow even though I'm not going out

To be honest a number of things happened that seemed to all hit me at the same time. First, as a fan of declutters I started being physically sickened by the amount of makeup that many influencers own and that are thrown away when they expired because the desire to "have" it is more important than passing it on to someone who would actually use it. Second, as many have noted here, the market became saturated and at the same time the quality of products dropped. Third, as inflation hit and drugstore makeup became outrageously expensive, there were simply better things to spend my money on. And, finally, it seemed that increasingly the influencers I had enjoyed watching became hardened, cynical, self-absorbed and more obviously out to make a buck. There are a few exceptions, but I am no longer interested in watching someone living in a beautiful home or acreage - paid for by me buying the products they push - and complaining about their mental health issues while living a life I can only dream about. I think it's brave Angelica for you to ask the question, because it desperately needs to be asked and yet no one has the guts to do it.

I got into makeup later in life like mid twenties and I think 2016 era was when I started watching the beauty content creators on here. I have always done makeup for me because its fun and it brings me joy. I also learned the power of good skincare through YT so I am super happy about that. I think for me its the creativity part that people are lacking when they say their love for makeup died and also you have to want to actually use what you have and play with it not just collect it if that makes sense. I don't want to consume and I want to be smart with my money too so there is that plus project panning and seeing things get finished and getting my money's worth is so satisfying to me. Thank you for being such a breath of fresh air Angie!

My money cannot keep up with the quantity of brands and the amount of releases there are. Haven’t fallen out of love for makeup and there’s always a curiosity, but at the same time there comes a point when reality hit and you realize you either have something similar that you’re fairly satisfied with or there’s just fatigue and you have to be more selective to what you’ll immediately invest in.
Also, I do wish brands would perfect what they release (become THE master in what’s released, so that us, as consumers will have confident in their products). It’s a big guessing game as to which brands have perfected their formula and whether or not their formula will work for you. Another thing with brands releasing so many things, the influencers showcase or use them for a week or two and then they are off to another brand. However, there’s a catch 22: If brands don’t release new stuff, people stop looking at them, so the brands feel the need to release inferior quality or items that seem familiar (yet slightly different) or products just to go along with the “new” trend.
I’m trying to change my mindset to consume what I have and not purchase all that’s shiny and new.

I have always loved makeup with a passion, I was wearing a full face at 13-14yrs old & I’m 49 now. My intense love of makeup has never waned. I was always buying new makeup all my life & had a massive collection!
I’d say it was 2014/15 when I saw my first TH-cam makeup video which was Shaaanxo, I’m in Australia & I’m not sure how I saw it, I wasn’t into TH-cam & I don’t remember searching it. It was maybe 2016/17 when I started actively watching, Samantha Ravndahl was one of the first I watched regularly & by 2018/19 I watched lots of my faves (including you!) every day.
My collection is bigger than it use to be but it was always way bigger than anyone I knew. It’s mainly more eyeshadow palettes & blushes now, I always had soooo many lipsticks & lipglosses! They were my favourite thing to buy, all the latest ones and allll the colours!
This was such an interesting chat Angie! I always love hearing others say they have always loved makeup, I just don’t relate to people that go through phases or get bored with makeup.

I'm not loving makeup as much as I did in the fall, winter, and spring, but that's simply because it's so hot, and makeup only makes my face hotter. I sweat it right off, even my eye makeup. So it's hard to be enjoying it when I can only wear it if I know I'm going to be in air conditioning the whole time I have it on. Overall though, I love it more than ever and am actually mad that I sweat so much and can't wear it right now. :D Maybe next year I'll try harder to find sweat-proof items.

I've been in love with makeup ever since I was a kid. I was not around much makeup at all, as my mom and other women around me were not wearing any. But just playing with it during Halloween et having access to the little makeup my mo. had... It was just a fascination to me. Somehow, you got to paint your face and nobody was batting an eye... how awesome! With time, my passion for makeup grew and I keep it fun and light. It's nowhere near my job, it's not something I feel better with, it's just is what it is. It makes me happy. When I was in the depth of my burnout and then depression, I would sit and just swatch and play with colors, much like I do with any other creative outlet. I will rock a green smoky eye look and a basic brown neutral eyeshadow look... because it's not the end product that makes me happy, it's the process.

I think that one of the reasons why people are less interested in makeup is because makeup was seen as something "necessary" before. Like that we needed to make our face perfect or something like that. But with all the natural beauty movements, people started to feel they are not obligated to use it anymore. I've always seen makeup as fun or art on my face. Maybe that's why I still love it. I don't think I must wear makeup. But I LOVE doing it. And I think that my makeup collection is very big for an ordinary person (not a blogger or MUA) as well 😄

  • @thefreevolous

I had a similar path to yours: I’ve always loved makeup (but I liked to cover my acne on a daily basis), and when yers later TH-cam came to show all the brands and techniques, I was stoked. I joined TH-cam because I wanted to talk about makeup and didn’t have anyone around me interested in it. Still talking mostly to the void all these years later, but I met such incredible sweet people and created bonds over makeup and skincare :)
TLDR: this all started as an appreciation for the skill/art/creativity and a genuine desire to share and learn, feel you’re part of a community, and the excitement of discovering new things every so often. Now it’s more about the numbers, the money, the performance. Both creators and audience are probably feeling it, and, to stay relevant and not burnout, or not completely sell out to less ethical behaviours and sponsored content, some move on to other things. There are lots of nuance and moving parts, though, ageism being one that nobody talks about.
I do notice a few things: there’s a cycle for many influencers. They start young, late high school or college age, when they have the time needed to jumpstart this. It becomes their job, and it’s stable for a few years, but then they go on to marry, have kids, discover new interests, and become less interested in makeup and more in lifestyle and showing off baby clothes and house renovations. Their audience “grows” with them, and things steer away form their starting point.
Many people stay on the neutral side of makeup, and it comes to a point when you’re doing the same thing over and over just with different product. They try to make new things and divert from there.
Also, let’s not avoid the ageism in this industry and community. Not many “older”-looking content creators are very relevant in the space, with a few specific exceptions. Makeup doesn’t sit as it used to and as brands like to show it off… Skincare doesn’t miraculously iron your actual wrinkles out… Brands start to let you go, and that deluded part of the audience who believes camera tricks and just wants to mimic a genetically blessed person instead of critically thinking and realising you’re not going to look like them if you buy that cream gets disillusioned and you loose lots of audience. So people feel the need to branch out before they start getting relegated (and offended in the comments…).
Nowadays there’s already a tutorial for every technique out there, all the MUAs spill their secrets, and kids are recycling all the trends, relabelling them with a new cool name 😂, if you’ve been around enough you have noticed all of this, so it must be hard to feel the pressure to always be coming up with new content.
Also, there used to be a time when making one or two videos, posting a couple of pictures, was enough to make a living, but now if you’re not constantly posting videos, photos, reels, tik toks, you’re not going to make a living out of it, unless you sell out all your content to sponsorships. It must take a toll. You yourself mention often how overworked you are, and that stems from you not relying on pushing product onto people. Not everyone does that, there’s “easier” ways…
When TH-cam started it was more about the tutorials, and playing what was already out there. Just the amount of viewers to get a steady gig: getting a few tens of thousands subs was great at that time (and it was a tight knit community). Now it needs to be on the hundreds of thousands, and what captures people’s short attention span is the new, keeping the ball moving…
There were mostly seasonal releases, 4 or 5 products per brand a year, which helped building excitement… and then everything blew up in a different direction. It became about pushing content and brands and new product. It’s amazing to get to know so many new brands and products and seeing the evolution of makeup, but keeping up with all that can be overwhelming.
On the consumer side, we need to acknowledge how ridiculous it is how much product comes out every week and how many 30 second “trends” jump at you from under the rocks. If there’s a genuine interest in new things, it becomes overwhelming and we get a bit of a viewer burnout because you realise you’ll never be able to “keep up” and everything you own is hardly mentioned again after release. Most creators don’t spend time with product anymore (you are a great exception). Some people come to learn new techniques and how to trouble shoot but tutorials don’t sell anymore, Plus the scandals of people both revealing themselves as actual sleazy and terrible humans or just petty drama… not inspiring for everyone.
I can absolutely understand the fatigue, and how stepping away from this to enjoy makeup offline can be a thing.
Thant being said, quoting the song, My Love Is Here To Stay.

I’ve never fallen out of love with makeup. Never. I remember in 1998, one of my co-workers complimented me on my purple eyeshadow and said “she’s not afraid of color, are you?” And it’s one of my favorite memories I associate with my love of makeup. I used to flip through magazines and notice the model’s makeup if it was more editorial and just loving it so much.
I’m not buying makeup as frequently just because my collection is big (and I think the more I buy, the more similar colors I’ll have) but I still love makeup so much and buy some every month. It’s just not as frequent because I know I won’t use everything before it expires.

People were restricted to go out, encourage to stay home and makeup was not priority in the every day. Plus, finally, promoting the beauty in being and loving oneself just the way we are and not needing cosmetics to be "beautiful" we really got into that state of mind made cosmetics not priority in every day life. I still love to watch makeup content of any kind, I love watching reviews and not necessarily to buy the item but to see what I have that is similar to create a similar look or learn a new technique or color combo. That is what I loved about your channel and someone like Marlena (makeupgeek), you show what you are using and then say "oh you can use something similar". I enjoyed a recent video where you didn't list the items used, it was more about enjoying the makeup and it reminded me of how the beauty community used to be, when we all had those huge 180 color palettes from ebay or amazon. we need more content like that.

I have noticed that even compared to the same time last year, (keeping in mind that Summers are busy for everyone and uploads are not as frequent as the fall into winter) that some of my favorite youtubers in the makeup community are posting a lot less. Many of the people I used to watch a lot are posting other stuff and or their passion for it is just missing.
I'm not really on tiktok because I prefer long form content where I can learn something. I have a full body chronic pain disease so I spend a lot of time at home and or in bed laid up. Makeup is my outlet for creativity and self-care when I am feeling up to it. I love watching people test products, grwm and new techniques. I feel like my excitement is in full force and I want to see others with the same enthusiasm and as of late... it's just kind of missing. I am less interested in brand drama or anything negative because as a mom of several children, I don't need to surround myself with anymore chaos.
I am purchasing less because I have enough for 25 lifetimes and only buy things that are exceptionally intriguing to me but I still look into new releases etc. I'm 39 but I love colorful eye makeup especially and the current trends are more subtle. I know these things change overtime and it's ok but I am hoping that I can still find the content that I love in the future. As always, thank you for posting this because as you can see from my long post that as a viewer, I see it within the community too.

I definitely am coming from a similar place as you where I got into make up and the artistry of it as a teen and had a pretty decent sized collection when I found makeup youtube _twice_ (I took a break and came back and played catch up for awhile) lol I still really love it, though, even if I go through phases of wanting to do super simple one and done looks and then back into more fun colourful, editorial looks and experimentation. It's never been something I have stopped loving and enjoying in my everyday life because I genuinely love the artistry side of it above everything else and I love seeing the new innovative products that are being released each year.
ETA About the shopping thing SAME omg yes like I only go when I _need_ something (to replace a product) and a lot of times when there is a new palette with a super interesting colour story, I try to just recreate it myself or see if I have something that can give me the same look already in my collection instead of buying right off the bat (there are exceptions of course). There have even been times where I recreated a palette and was like "yeah, I still really want the real thing" and got it and _still_ preferred using the one I recreated over the real thing. I rarely am buying new makeup to just buy new makeup anymore.
