People are like what happened to Galen rupp as if he wasn’t a poster on my wall 15 years ago, guys he’s getting older it happens lmao let the man enjoy his legacy
Also, being a good pro means knowing when to give yourself a break. If the body isn't feeling it, better to adjust the session rather than smash yourself to get it done. I've heard stories of Nick Willis regularly dropping out of sessions early when he knew he wasn't up to it. If you'd told him it was do or die Galen definitely would've been able to do this whole session, but it's not meant to be an all-out effort
Galen is still running sub 4:40 mile splits, running with track phenoms that are a decade + younger than him. He is a marathon runner, running the paces as a 5K and 10K runner. This is highly impressive. If you took kipchoge 2 years ago and asked him to do track workouts with Kiplimo he would be getting dropped. The fact he is putting himself outside there working with Mike Smith is an absolute great sign.I expect big things from him if he stays healthy
@Ak-qd9ow Who ran a sub 2hr marathon? From my knowledge that has never been done in a actual race and doesn't count..many of athletes have done crazy things in training but that doesn't mean that shud count to towards some wr or something...no one has broken 2 hrs in a marathon in race settings and conditions....I've seen many nba players hot 30 straight 3s in the gym but wats the most straight 3s ever made in an nba game lol..go figure
I mean obviously kiplimo would drop kipchoge at any distance half marathon or under but This comment makes it seem like what galen rubb is doing In This video is better than would kipchoge can do wich is simply not true 4:40 is slower than Kipchoge’s marathon pace
@ Rupp is not kipchoge I didn’t think I had to spell that out. This was an example. But what is a fact is that These splits are much faster than Rupps marathon PR which is 4:49 pace. So for him to be doing this is a great sign, and it’s not surprising that running with elite 5K/10K talent would be difficult for him.
I always love how Smith is so quick on his feet to notice when an athlete is off and make adjustments to still get the most possible out of someone without overdoing it. He’s never one to go psycho if his workout plan isn’t strictly followed but he also never truly throws the workout away
Gslen Rupp has a herniated disk in his back which required major physical therapy to strengthen his core muscles in the affected area. This occurred in 2022. He had to alter his normal running form due to the back issue. He also has a congenital issue which caused a bone growth to devolop on his foot which was starting to fray his Achilles tendon. He had surgery 2 months ago on October 17. He is already back on the track working his way back into shape. That foot issue destroyed his Olympic Marathon trials.
I remember watching an old workout video when Nico was doing 1k repeats at newbury park at the same pace. Crazy to think how many times he’s run these types of reps and how much smoother he’s gotten since then
Galen Rupp also just might be at a different point in his Block. He races marathons so he peaks at a different time. Young guys also adjust workouts like this, no big deal guys
Nah this isn’t true his workout was 400 repeats he never ran 10x1k @ 2:45 after a race. Get your facts straight, good try to gaslight us though. And in the race you are talking about is when Galen ran the 10K not the marathon. He is a full blown marathon runner, running intervals with 5K and 10K guys
@MariusGerstnerhe was on Nike Oregon Project with Alberto Salazar. The shadow on the entire group was that they weren’t clean BUT RUPP HAS NEVER HAD A POSITIVE TEST. I guess to some people the hole group is guilty by association
I never understood why athletes strip down to their shorts for workouts. When I ran I loved staying layered up because then on race day it was a treat to peel everything off and drop a marvelous time. I loved keeping everything warm and loose. I left NAU as a student athlete 30 years ago and I watch these videos just to reminisce about all the hours I spent training there and how exhausted I would be. Go Jacks!!!
Galen just doesn't move like he used to. Father time comes for us all. Props to him for getting through a tough workout without any sort of complaining or feeling sorry for himself. Sets a good example for Nico and Drew.
Man, I don't know if Rupp still has it in him for another WMM's win. Maybe he can pull a Meb or Bekele at the end of his career, but the last three years have been really rough on him.
Looking at the Vdot chart, they're training at 10k pace (83vdot). The 200m repeats were done at 5k pace the first 100m and the second 100m at mile pace. The 2km threshold was at marathon pace.
Thanks for the great vid. 2 comments to Nico. (hopefully this means nothing and they are aware of it). on the k's, his right leg during kick back, comes up considerable lower than the left leg. Usually that much asymmetry can mean something could be up biomechnically. Also, his right foot does a "slap-slap" when planting, and his left does a single slap. Again a sign that there may be a bit more heal strike on the right foot. And another sign of some kind of asymmetry. Just pointing it out, in case they haven't reviewed. Good luck to the studs.

Really glad to still see Rupp getting after it. His longevity and impact on the sport has been great.
Everyone talking about Galen and Nico and completely missed how Drew ran last 1k rep at 2:39 absolutely wild 🔥
That 2K threshold at the end is diabolical
Actually, run properly at threshold EFFORT sets the body perfectly back to normal, but helps with super adaptation/speeds up recovery.
You are not going to kick at the beginning of a race when you are fresh. You max out at the end. That is what they are training for.
