Once you get used to it despite the controls, you really feel like you actually learned how to drift. Not to mention it has some of the best car customization compared to games today.
I mean Eutechnyx we're also known to made cultural classics such as Pimp My Ride and Ride To Hell Retribution, which gives you guys an idea what you we're in for
The physics were a BIG problem, especially with the downhill drifting (for me). I rage quit many times before I actually completed it😂. The music is FIRE tho
I adore this review simply because of how it is explained. I like the fact that you actually acknowledged the issues behind the game instead of blindly defending it because "old = good." Such types of reviews for old racing games are insanely rare nowadays.
In their defense, this F&F game is actually pretty damned good for what it is, it's just the driving physics in this game is so bad it's almost feel like it's some kind of foreshadowing of all of the non-Nascar Eutechnyx games to come
This game definitely had place on my heart, with most of soundtrack no copyright from Lemon Drop Kick, good customization, and some nice easter egg rivals, and I beat this game with only Trueno!
I found that the Driving Assist option simply makes the game countersteer for you when the game detects that you're drifting. For me I turned it off during drift races and turned it back on for highway races. I think that this game would probably one of the best racing games if only it had good physics, cause the customization is amazing, you don't see racing games with so many aftermarket licensed parts and bodykits nowadays. Also fun fact: A band called Lemon Drop Kick did most of the songs in this game and one of their band members is a rival in Aqualine named "JDM Justin". He has a channel here on YT where he uploaded some of the band's music and has talked about being in the game.
For me, physics are THE deciding factor for if I wanna finish the game. To me, good atmosphere and expansive customization won’t save a game from having shit physics, especially with the endgame touge physics here.
@@brawler5760and also the annoying the drift points rubberbanding in the final parts of the game. At start, opponent has 250pts only but a few seconds later, 12840pts!
A few fun facts from experience with this game!! 😁 The final touge map (*censored* mountain) is actually the very same mountain pass the climax race (Sean's RB26 Mustang vs. DK) in Tokyo Drift is held up 👍, more especifically, the A route, overused in the game?? Yes, but it was actually a really cool nod to the movie. Also, remember, the mountain pass was incredibly thin in the movie, hence here it was hard as hell... A good advice to kill the score is to stop in one hairpin and start doing donuts (works flawlessly with a RWD car, of course), if correctly made, you will have infinite drift points, doesn't matter if the rival ends first, keep doing them all you want! IIRC, the first touge team was a indirect nod to Initial D (Most drivers' names were slightly changed out of the actual characters, but they had the same cars as the real anime) This was the very first game to feature the Lexus LFA with its very 1st concept!, also the 7-speed car was, iirc, the Lexus LF-C Concept (later the LC500), which did it's only game appearance here, the latter goes as well for the Mitsubishi Sportback concept (later the rare 4th-gen based Lancer Sportback, which gave Mitsubishi the ticket to make its final Dakar truck, the Racing Lancer) Of course, most of the Tokyo Drift cars (and Dom's Charger) appear here, but Brian O'Conner's Skyline *technically* doesn't (altough you can make an almost-perfect replica since the R34 does have the same C-West body kit), what he drives here instead is the (although slightly altered) Street Racing Syndicate R34, which has the same C-West body kit as the 2F2F Skyline but with an unpainted Carbon Fiber trunk, but the livery is same one as SRS! Some Soulcalibur (III) and Tekken (5) characters were featured here as well as drift charms and vinyls, giving you the chance to make some good itasha designs! You win some of them on the free roam encounter races, so those aren't that useless! Personally, I love this game in a nostalgia way, but also due to the wow factor!, yes, the physics are bad (especially the drift physics), but the car list was very unique since you even had obscure versions of well known JDMs and USDMs apart of some obscure cars, the maps were well made for what they were and, most importantly, the customization was the best of any 6th gen game ever made!! (only on par with NFSU2) ❤, real brands, a very well made livery editor which looks more decent compared to others from more modern games and even some unique stuff such as the drift charms and the rim's LEDs!! . Simply such an underrated gem that was drowned by its own flaws and NFS's overall popularity at the time! Doesn't help as well the developers time later made a certain motorcycle game I'm not going to mention due to respect to all of us, and get mocked all the time due to that 😅
the thing that i love from this game is the obnoxious amount of licensed aftermarket parts, which could make you spent hours or even more customizing your cars with it, especially the paint job in this game were fun to play too. you rarely see that kind of charm in a racing video games
I'm so glad you brought this game to light because it's a game from my childhood that I still think about from time to time... amongst GT4, NFSMW, etc. I remember being so ass on the drift sections that I'm pretty sure this is the game where I beat those sections by finding a section of the road it would allow me to do donuts and just went round and round to rack up points. I do agree with the physics and all. I was so young playing this game that I didn't have a real understanding of the differences between AWD, FF, FR, and I'm pretty sure this was the game that introduced me (in an obviously not realistic and exaggerated detail) to their differences in driving dynamics. I also remember MR being the worst to try and control - but then again I was pretty bad at racing games at the time. And yeah, I agree the car customization was bomb.
The funny thing is that MR cars (if tuned well, like a well-upgraded MR2) can be an absolute joy to drive. The same _can_ go for RWDs, but there are some (including a bunch of muscle cars) that can feel borderline undrivable.
Tokyo xtreme racer zero had the trailer for the original fast and furious in its bonus videos. Still my favorite racing game of all time. It also had a cool short documentary of Japanese street racing in the bonus videos.
Considering I'm a sucker for obscure and niche Japanese/Japan based racing games, and I love the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series, I might have to look for a copy of this for my PS2 sometime! It actually seems pretty fun and well done, at least for what it is, even if there's some flaws, that's fine with me, it doesn't need to be perfect.
Despite its flaws, I can clearly see the amount of effort that went into this game from Eutechnyx. The atmosphere in it is really good and the customization is in my opinion among the best!
Nostalgia. I remember this in PS2 like an underdog game. The customization at that time is pretty wild with bunch of varieties compared to other racing game. As far as I can remember, one of the lexus cars has 7-gear ratio. Still, one of the underrated racing games at that time.
This was my very first game on the PS2 when I got mine for Christmas back when I was a kid. Recently dug out that very same PS2 and I still had the game. The nostalgia was definitely hitting crazy. Such a banger of a game, I’ll have to do a full play through again soon
Great to hear, but as mentioned, don’t play the Touge endgame unless you’re mentally ready for it… (although I can recommend using Han’s RX-7 as a drift car)
NGL . I absolutely loved playing this game on my ps2 but I always wondered what it could've been with NFS Underground 2 style driving physics.... Deserves a remaster. I also died when when you referred to the "2005 R34 GTR Z Tune" as a "common car". Great video, brought back memories, had a nice laugh. Thank you, happy new year and cheers !
The mention of the Z-Tune was totally coincidental, actually; I was thinking of showing either the R-Tune or Z-Tune, mostly to show off that there aren't "just" some Skylines in the game (as far as I know, there's at least five).
it was great BUT the handling was very difficult, and unrealistic, not in a good way, the cars felt rubbery and you needed a step learning curve in order to not crash always in every corner.
To be honest, once I understood the wonky physics, it wasn’t so bad for the Wangan racing. The touge drifting was sometimes quite painful to get used to, however.
@mrxbas yes, i did the same, it was the only game on its time that really understood JDM car tuning and I loved it because of that... I don't really remember what car did I use but I was really good on drifting
God I played this game *so* freaking much in the late 2000s, early 2010s, it's one of my favorites! While it's underniably a bit rough on the edges, and the physics are indeed a bit wonky, this game just has so much heart and soul to it; the atmosphere and the vibes are fantastic and it really makes you feel like a car person doing car person things. The customization in the game is second to *none*, the unholy amount of licensed aftermarket parts from companies like Fujita Engineering, Spoon, VeilSide, Top Secret, C-West, to name a few (because or else I'd be all day here) is just the best part of the game for me, because this means you can build a car in this game that you could theorically also build IRL, which makes it that extra immersive! The driving gets a lot better once you get all used to it, that said, while I also love the drifting, I do agree that [Redacted] Mountain is just freaking painful, it's way too tight thanks to the invisible walls and the freaking AI blatantly cheating if you're too far from them is pouring salt on the wound, not a fun experience. All that said, this game is 100% a must play for anyone who likes Japanese cars and the Japanese automotive culture, there's just so many nods to the old japanese drifting and street racing world, at times it feels like this game is a playable Best Motoring or Video Option video, hahaha.
Commenting before the end of the video. I remember the races against DK's crew as being really difficult but also possible to cheese them. At one section of the track you can do donuts that will cause the score to go up quickly, more quickly than the points lost by reaching the end after the opponent. Simply donut until hitting about 40k points and cruise to the finish.
I will forever defend this game because behind the difficult handling, is a REALLY good street racing game with a lot of content. Yes the handling is not the best as any other ones out there, there's a really steep learning curve but once you learn it, it becomes so satisfying to do drifts. Car choice also plays a factor because I discovered that Sedans like the 4-door Skyline or Toyota Chaser felt terrible for drifting, while things like any of the FDs & NSXs are good at long high speed drifts You can technically customize any car as long as it does not have any license plate because that seemed like the only indicator. The game's soundtrack is (so far) one of the few racing game soundtracks where I liked ALL of the songs, usually I would just pick a few from the list but just for this game I liked all of them. This is the only time a western media has tried to make a TXR rival and it's a really good attempt at it. Literally the only downside for me is that there was no Parking Lot Drifting apart from the one for the Training Sequence
So glad that you've finally gave this game a proper attention that it deserved and talk abt the car rosters The cars itself are mostly returning ones/reused assets from SRS (minus the Volkswagen) hence why there's no R32s & R33s Skylines, no SW20 MR2, no Suzuki + Daihatsu (so no funky econo Kei Cars as starters), no older gen Civic like EGs + EKs (since they could only get the licenses for the then new EP3 Civic Type R, FG2 Civic Si & FN1 Civic and not to mentioned there's no Honda in SRS) and many more This game is definitely one of my "Guilty Pleasures" that i'll gladly return to replay it once in a while sinked so much hours into the game that i practically knew the inside out of this game
That Nitrous effect is even more insane than how fast it makes you lol I really like the customization aspect of this game, I'd love to get my hands on it just to go through all the cars and see what weird kits are available. The different HUDs are quite interesting as well, the Cyber one just seems like a bit of a mess though. Also really sick to have all the cameos of different drivers and cars.
I do believe the NOS effect is an emulation issue. I don't recall the actual game having such flashy effects when hitting the nitrous, not having an option to enable it, but it still looks rad with the glitch. Customization-wise, yeah, barely any games come close to the amount of choices you get to customize your cars. I still have my memory-card save with almost 100 cars, many repeated ones with different bodykits. It's really fun. But driving-wise, you gotta get used to the jank.
I played this game back in the day. I remember i loved the cars in the game, but it got boring to me pretty quickly because it was easy (granted, i was use to playing arcade racers back them compared to now) and way to repetitive. I loved the soundtrack, especially "Adam Fox's Attack of the Thing" track.
Especially considering F&F games on consoles went down to the shitter side these days, thought I must say that Spy Racers game was pretty fun for what it is if it weren't for F&F branding
This would honestly be the best racing game set in Japan if the physics were a tad better. Lots of licensed cars and parts, legendary real life people that are important to car culture cameos (years before NFS2015 did it), Shuto Expressway (albeit cursed) AND Touge racing in the same game, Genki style rival profiles that are interesting to read and make the world feel more alive, it sounds too good to be true and they almost nailed it.
I think he forgot the fact that some opponents also are impossible to interact with to achieve that sweet 100% completion in txr series. Based from the fact he kinda compared it to the txr series.
Back in like 2003 I remember one of those tuning car expo like SEMA happened at my city and one car had a PS2 on his trunk running the E3 trailer , I was so blown away by it and took me several years till find out that never released
If you turn driving assist off and don't overtune your car you can actually play the game with decent physics. As a kid it was always "Level 4/5 part higher level, more bhp, apes together strong" but replaying it as an adult I found that level 2-3 parts for your drift vehicles with level 4 tires lets you actually fine tune and control your car properly in corners.
My least favorite part of the game though is the screen shake that you cannot turn off, it just gives a headache and it's very noticeable especially on the highway.
Despite being not really that good itself, it does show how good the PS2 era was for racing games, with so many AA games that would all do slightly different things.
6th generation console era overall is the best era for racing games not just ps2, 2000's era is arguably a golden age of racing games where so many titles from many range of genre from simulator to arcade
It's always something I remember so fondly from that era: game dev studios, big or small, had to come up with something that stood out from the rest in one way or the other, which has created so many games we still remember to this day!
My cousin and I spent many days playing this when it was released. As teens who likes the original F&F movies and NFS UG series, this was the perfect match. We hated the togue races tho, especially the one against DK, until funnily enough my brother who doesn't really play much games got the controller and started doing donuts in place and accumulated huge points, which made my cousin adapt this strategy to cheese the race against DK to finally beat him. Aah happier simpler days
This game is the official fast and furious experience, from building your car from scratch to driving in the mountains with the drift kings. On top of that you also get to race iconic figures from the series, such as Brian O’ Connor, Dominic Toretto, Sean, DK, Han, it saddens me that a game from 2006 had so much in it. I went back to play it to see if it aged well and it did.
I still have this game on both of the emulators, PS2 and PSP. This was the game that started my love with cars and racing games. Big respect to this game.
I like how nobody ever brings up the arcade fnf games when talking about good fnf games. I know they're just cruis'n clones, but they're still good games.
As much as I love the original Cruis'n USA, The Fast and The Furious with its nitro and progressive upgrades became the new meta for arcade racers. In fact, I would argue Cruis'n Blast is an F&F clone.
I remember playing this game circa 14yo and feeling frustrated over the annoying wall crashes and repetitive courses but I do remember the customization being amazing (didn't have the chance to properly exploit it back then tho) but now I'm realizing that is literally a cross breed between NFS Underground 2 and NFS: Prostreet which is wild. Awesome video btw
I remember playing this game as a kid. Physics feeled weird after gran turismo 3 and 4 but the game was quite enjoyable. Seeing this after all this years makes me wanna play it again. Thanks for reminding me that this game exists!
I played this game when I was a kid, on a PS2 Slim. One of my favorite cars was the Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback concept car. Also, if I remember correctly, the Silvia S15 had a C-West bodykit, with a lowered roof
Oh you forgot to mention when you beat a Crew’s leader you win the leaders car as well! Oh and the fact that you run into Initial D inspired characters like Takumi, Itsuki, Keisuke and Ryosuke!
The Initial D references were something I had sadly missed in the script, and I _kinda_ mention winning the leader's car towards the end; I could've made that a bit clearer, though.
@@mrxbas Oh no it’s ok bro! Excellent review and a massive thank you for the detailed dive into it! I was LITERALLY about to create a video of my own about it because I was shocked that no one had reviewed it within the last 12 years or so! Though it has its issues and I probably just adore it because of nostalgia, it’s still fun as hell to this day!
i've been playing the game for a few months now, and its really fun when you get the hang of it, and the customisation is almost endless a 10/10 for me
one thing i loved doing in this game was getting insane speed. you can take a dodge charger srt8 and you sway it back and forth on the wangan or anywhere really and get 350 mph lol
It’s good to see this game talked about more. The things that you can do in this game are insane, even better than modern titles. And I know people complain about the physics, but I actually liked it since the things that I learned from drift school actually helped me once I applied it, which I never saw much of in a racing game. Besides that, great video.
When it comes to Japanese market cars and parts…this game rocks…it came out as a tie in to the Tokyo Drift movie and it gives clues to the plot of the movie especially in the bios of Han’s Crew and it revealed who owned the cool yellow & Black Toyota Chaser that you saw in some movies scenes…the unseen dude who helps guide you through the movie , at least in the beginning is supposed to be Twinky’s cousin…which is cool because he said that he knew some people in a another city in Japan when Han was killed…some of the racers who are based on real drift racers who did the stunts in Tokyo Drift like the real Drift King Keiichi , Rhys Millen, and Tanner Foust!
I remember having this game as a kid in 2006, and even found the occasional person playing online. The customization, vehicle selection, and the graphics were all ahead of their time. The cars felt appropriately heavy and rewarding to drive with, though it was obvious that the physics needed more time and/or development resources to be refined. What this game did prove, however, was that the F&F series should have, and still could be, taken more seriously as a series of open world racing games with its own identity -- and not just some licensed shovelware or a Need For Speed clone.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VID!! this game lives on with me forreal. still one of my favorite racers to this day. maybe if i revisit and play it i wont enjoy it as much as i do the older NFS games or Midnight Club's, but at one point this game was my very favorite
For the final touge: clutch kick all the way for victory, the starter cars (S14 K's is broken for some reason), and try to score over 18k in total (from my experience, they usually got around 16 to 17k). Assist mode actually makes your car grip "more" before eventually slip.
MR-S first car gang! This game is so good. Drift mechanics always had me. And yeah, the last drift battles were so damn hard because of how tight the track was AND you couldn't actually see the track properly. It was annoying.
The unnamed mountain proved to me that I'm a bit of a masochist. I spent so much time mastering the drifting physics that when I got to that mountain I spent hours learning every corner. I ATE that mountain, and yes the ai cheat. HARD.
For reminder, don't play the PAL / European Version of the game since they were scrapped a Honda / Acura brand in PAL version, so it's simply has lesser car content then NTSC version Thats why in PAL version you use Supra in career intro while in NTSC you use NSX in career intro
The very first moment i saw my parents getting this game for the PS2, i was quite intrigued as to what this game would've delivered, later on when i played the game, i was blown away after playing the first highway race based on what you can do in regards to racing, buying and customizing cars. I just never noticed that it was made by Eutechnyx after Street Racing Syndicate.
This game looks great!! Though it raised me a question about a game ya mentioned a lot, Tokyo racer drift. Could you ever do a challenge run of the game, maybe with some kei car machine of doom or etc
if you get the hang of the drifting, for me it was at the DK drift stage, and you tune your car to your liking, the drifting becomes very easy. you dont need to full speed in every corner, but with enough hp you still could drift trough the entire corner. i loved the drifting progression as a kid back in the day. it felt like i was really learning how to drift.
I swear, i played this at my grandmothers house with my ps2 on my grandmothers small black tube tv. Maaaaan i haven't played the game ever since but it was good game!
i did play it,beat all roll up race can unlock the hidden hot spot just after mazda dealer. i just hate the wall physics makes it hard to play on some rivals, they don't given names of roll up rivals
This game deserves a PC port with upgraded graphics, kinda like what they did with NFS MW and Carbon Redux. I remember playing this in the PS2 and having so much trouble adapting to the physics, especially for drifting, but man did I love going around the limited Wangan.
I had this game when I was kid and I remember enjoying it. Just driving on the highway was a lot of fun. I got it at a GameStop for $10 used at the time
I remember playing this game many years ago Also played both PAL and NTSC versions If I'm being honest, I really love NTSC version because it got so many american cars and honda cars too
One of the rivals in this game Ben Schaffer is real person and he even appeared in actual movie (first F&F from 2001 after the first race when Brian said "Almost had you")
This game 100% deserves a remaster. It's such a hidden gem. If polished, it can become a fantastic game. Nothing even needs to be added. Just update the graphics, improve on the physics (don't completely overhaul them or it's gonna feel like a completely different game lmao), and maybe add a few things. Maybe. Nothing in particular needs to be added since the car list is decent, there are quite a few races, the map is not super big nor super small (or at least, it didn't feel small to me idk 🤷🏻♂️), the customization is great, performance upgrade is great, livery editor I guess could be updated, but even then I find it better than Forza's and NFS since one can skew decals, if I'm not incorrect, which helps a lot. Also, the fact that one has to fo to the performance shops and the like is great! You can see cars being worked on in the back too and it feels like an actual place you've gone to for your car to get new parts and stuff. Idk. It just nails its theme. Like I said, this game needs a remaster (not a remake).
the random opponents go with the cars you currently use, it was pretty easy to get them spawning once you get that, you can't get them all in a fully upgraded car for example, you need to work your way in different cars and setups. that game was really good i still own it. but damn the drifting at the end game was ridiculously hard.
i legit had this game and it was super fun. i knew i wasn't going crazy when i could find literally NOTHING on this game when i was trying to look it up a long time ago. Glad it's getting some recognition now. this was a fun game when i was a kid Loved the car customizations too.
I've played this game a lot during my childhood with my PSP. I still remember the times I was trying to beat Brian's race many many times and I kept losing many many times because of ONE particular section. The physics screwed me up there and, as a kid, I kept pushing forward for hours until I beat him. But that was only one gripe out of the many I experienced (no thanks, the last drift events) but most of it were just fun.
One more paradoxical thing about this game is that if you wanna achieve the highest top speed possible you don't let the car straight and use nitrous as usual, you must swerve your car as much as possible and don't even need to use nitrous. Imagine you playing with a real hard boss and make this weird maneuver to win it.
I'm actually really surprised Hondas were even in the NTSC release in the first place, especially given their track record of not showing up in expressway racers back in the 2000s. It's why they never showed up in licensed form in the Shutoko Battle game, as well as the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune series until 5DX+.
I remember struggling to complete the first race in this game cuz the car was manual by default and i had NO IDEA what was going on. The car just wouldn’t accelerate after the first seconds of driving. Back then i didn’t even have a memory card for my ps2 and i never got past that first section of the game 😂😂😂. Good times.
I had heard of this game quite before, but I didn't get the chance to try out and after watching this video, it feels like it's kind of interesting a bit to me and I will consider trying out one day, maybe on either the PS2 one or the PSP one. Kinda decent and respect to this fellow banger 💖
something I am surprise this review didn't mention was the huge amount of roads, exits and entire section of the highway being block off or unfinish. This did not really occur to me until I started playing the game again and when I saw how many exits where blocked off it feels like the game lost more content than it would have.
I did notice this as well, but considering how “complete” the roster of opponents is, I don’t think they were cut mid-development; I guess they already had so much on their plate by having both highway and mountain races in the same game that they had to prioritize, and I think this was an easy option even though it could’ve definitely made the map even better.
I believe the Lexus LFA Concept had seven gears, but honestly, i could be wrong. You can just grab the one you obtained from Sunshine Run just to check though. Though my experience in this game is "I love the Wangan Racing, but yeah avoid the Drift like a Plague", though thanks for the tips of actually taking AWD and FWD for it. That could be very helpful. While i admittedly cheesed out Wangan with the very OP Corvette that goes like 250 Mph after i used a highly upgraded Corolla Levin as a starter car until i beat Sunshine Run
As a kid, I’d always buy a Corvette ZO6 to finish the Wangan side. The LFA also (somehow) has only six gears, but it’s the fastest car in the game, reaching over 270 MPH (and it can go higher, but I’m sure that the game has hard-capped it).
looking at the gameplay trailer for the Genki developed F&F game, im guessing they took that and turned it into Racing Battle C1GP, a Japan only racing game that's just TXR but on closed tracks and the highways are turned into closed track as well
Yo you almost there
you almost there
hahaha, too good baby
what don't you do for money
@@mrxbas i forgot about this. now i can hear it in my head perfectly.
@@mrxbas2024, its been 18 years since this iconic PS2 game came out. And its still 9.4/10 game.
This game goes pretty hard, its just that the physics turn a good amount of people away.
The funny thing is that, once you have a decent car and get used to the physics for Wangan racing, it can be pretty fun to drive around in!
Once you get used to it despite the controls, you really feel like you actually learned how to drift.
Not to mention it has some of the best car customization compared to games today.
The game goes Fast.
The physics leave you Furious.
Thanks! It's also a bit of tough love for these games, especially when it comes to F&F game adaptations...
In their defense, this F&F game is actually pretty damned good for what it is, it's just the driving physics in this game is so bad it's almost feel like it's some kind of foreshadowing of all of the non-Nascar Eutechnyx games to come
Kazuya Bai's Drift car in F&F 2006 is simply great.
This game definitely had place on my heart, with most of soundtrack no copyright from Lemon Drop Kick, good customization, and some nice easter egg rivals, and I beat this game with only Trueno!
I actually didn't know that Lemon Drop Kick wouldn't get you copyright nuked; a missed opportunity from me!
To be honest, I think J-rock was something NFS should have jumped onto, especially with Carbon and ProStreet.
@@ArbitraryOutcomeF&F USA Versions has 1 less Extra Opponent although the 40th one needed 5 straight hours before finally finding it.

Turning it off all the way, except one Brian O'Connor.
@@brawler5760and also the annoying the drift points rubberbanding in the final parts of the game. At start, opponent has 250pts only but a few seconds later, 12840pts!
A few fun facts from experience with this game!! 😁
The final touge map (*censored* mountain) is actually the very same mountain pass the climax race (Sean's RB26 Mustang vs.
IIRC, the first touge team was a indirect nod to Initial D (Most drivers' names were slightly changed out of the actual characters, but they had the same cars as the real anime)
This was the very first game to feature the Lexus LFA with its very 1st concept!, also the 7-speed car was, iirc, the Lexus LF-C Concept (later the LC500), which did it's only game appearance here, the latter goes as well for the Mitsubishi Sportback concept (later the rare 4th-gen based Lancer Sportback, which gave Mitsubishi the ticket to make its final Dakar truck, the Racing Lancer)
Of course, most of the Tokyo Drift cars (and Dom's Charger) appear here, but Brian O'Conner's Skyline *technically* doesn't (altough you can make an almost-perfect replica since the R34 does have the same C-West body kit), what he drives here instead is the (although slightly altered) Street Racing Syndicate R34, which has the same C-West body kit as the 2F2F Skyline but with an unpainted Carbon Fiber trunk, but the livery is same one as SRS!
Doesn't help as well the developers time later made a certain motorcycle game I'm not going to mention due to respect to all of us, and get mocked all the time due to that 😅

i'm no modder, but that's not possible unless you go out of your way to replace the cars' textures in the game's file.
the thing that i love from this game is the obnoxious amount of licensed aftermarket parts, which could make you spent hours or even more customizing your cars with it, especially the paint job in this game were fun to play too. you rarely see that kind of charm in a racing video games
Those charms in PS2 Racing games are unforgotten.
Dont forget also about SHOX, Corvette Evolution GT, and Ford Racing 3.
The atmosphere in it is really good and the customization is in my opinion among the best!
im playing tokyo xtreme racer drift 2, sooo good
I was blown away by the customization in this old game. Pretty impressive
I like the Initial D reference they did with Team Kansai
Reisuke (Keisuke), yellow FD
Kyosuke (Ryosuke), white FC
Hiroto (Takumi), panda AE86
Cool fact, forgot about that
Commenting before the end of the video. I remember the races against DK's crew as being really difficult but also possible to cheese them. At one section of the track you can do donuts that will cause the score to go up quickly, more quickly than the points lost by reaching the end after the opponent. Simply donut until hitting about 40k points and cruise to the finish.
This game really made my road trip between cities not boring, and I was always waiting for the psp to be fully charged again and play this game
I will forever defend this game because behind the difficult handling, is a REALLY good street racing game with a lot of content. Yes the handling is not the best as any other ones out there, there's a really steep learning curve but once you learn it, it becomes so satisfying to do drifts. Car choice also plays a factor because I discovered that Sedans like the 4-door Skyline or Toyota Chaser felt terrible for drifting, while things like any of the FDs & NSXs are good at long high speed drifts
You can technically customize any car as long as it does not have any license plate because that seemed like the only indicator.
So glad that you've finally gave this game a proper attention that it deserved
and talk abt the car rosters
The cars itself are mostly returning ones/reused assets from SRS (minus the Volkswagen)
hence why there's no R32s & R33s Skylines, no SW20 MR2, no Suzuki + Daihatsu (so no funky econo Kei Cars as starters), no older gen Civic like EGs + EKs (since they could only get the licenses for the then new EP3 Civic Type R, FG2 Civic Si & FN1 Civic and not to mentioned there's no Honda in SRS) and many more
This game is definitely one of my "Guilty Pleasures" that i'll gladly return to replay it once in a while
sinked so much hours into the game that i practically knew the inside out of this game
The drift tutorial was really nice
Yeah, especially now that Dai is a drift legend!

That Nitrous effect is even more insane than how fast it makes you lol
I really like the customization aspect of this game, I'd love to get my hands on it just to go through all the cars and see what weird kits are available.
Great vid!
That nfsw Safehouse song brought so many memories back immediately
I always thought the game was just a fever dream but more and more TH-camrs are taking about it . Was honestly one of my favorite games
I mention it in the end. There's one roll-up racer you can simply not find on the NTSC PC version.
@@mrxbas This dude a real one to reply this early.
It's always something I remember so fondly from that era: game dev studios, big or small, had to come up with something that stood out from the rest in one way or the other, which has created so many games we still remember to this day!
that first soundtrack in the background....thank you. immediate nostalgic flashbacks
Yeah I absolutely liked it and I kinda thought of trying one day..
I like how nobody ever brings up the arcade fnf games when talking about good fnf games. I know they're just cruis'n clones, but they're still good games.
I have yet to delve into arcade racers. I've personally played the F&F arcade game and it's indeed quite nice!
As much as I love the original Cruis'n USA, The Fast and The Furious with its nitro and progressive upgrades became the new meta for arcade racers. In fact, I would argue Cruis'n Blast is an F&F clone.
I played it when I was a kid, and the only thing I remember clearly is how much I suffered in the last drift races.
This is my favorite game. I still play it to this day, especially the psp version
i've been playing the game for a few months now, and its really fun when you get the hang of it, and the customisation is almost endless a 10/10 for me
This game always stood out with how fast it felt and the decent customization. Definitely need to replay it.
One of my favorite racing games to this day, also it got me into rock music examples are
The asphalt - from afar
The plain white ts - revenge
one thing i loved doing in this game was getting insane speed. you can take a dodge charger srt8 and you sway it back and forth on the wangan or anywhere really and get 350 mph lol
I remember having a blast with this as a kid, ive never managed to get properly back into it though
It’s good to see this game talked about more. The things that you can do in this game are insane, even better than modern titles.
And I know people complain about the physics, but I actually liked it since the things that I learned from drift school actually helped me once I applied it, which I never saw much of in a racing game.
Besides that, great video.
This games soundtrack is the best & this is coming from somebody who’s favorite racing games where Underground 1, 2 & Most wanted
This video has so much detail in research/footage, humor. Perfect!
I love your usage of BGM music. From NFS World to Gran Turismo classics!
Thanks, the NFS World soundtrack is one that still hits different for me!
The Gran Turismo soundtracks in your video sond so clean, props to your editor and the content is so rich. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I am the editor myself, actually :)
THANK YOU FOR THIS VID!! this game lives on with me forreal. still one of my favorite racers to this day. maybe if i revisit and play it i wont enjoy it as much as i do the older NFS games or Midnight Club's, but at one point this game was my very favorite
i remember playing that game a lot as a kid, the customization was unreal :D LED´s in the rims, little figurines on the exhaust and stuff. good game
HUGE Respect for adding NFS:W Freeroam Music
For the final touge: clutch kick all the way for victory, the starter cars (S14 K's is broken for some reason), and try to score over 18k in total (from my experience, they usually got around 16 to 17k).
Assist mode actually makes your car grip "more" before eventually slip.
The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift (for the PS2) is such a hidden gem.
HARD.
Universal sucks for cancelling the original fast and furious game
I still listen to this games soundtrack while I’m driving for nostalgia
This game could’ve become something big if the physics where right
For reminder, don't play the PAL / European Version of the game since they were scrapped a Honda / Acura brand in PAL version, so it's simply has lesser car content then NTSC version
Thats why in PAL version you use Supra in career intro while in NTSC you use NSX in career intro
Oh yeah, that's definitely part of my plans for 2024 :)
@@mrxbas we need the GIGACHINO run in txr drift
Had it on PSP and I loved it just took getting used too. Also again more gran turismo 4 background music lol
It's just my favourite type of music :)
If only the canceled Genki F&F game saw the light of day…
if you get the hang of the drifting, for me it was at the DK drift stage, and you tune your car to your liking, the drifting becomes very easy. you dont need to full speed in every corner, but with enough hp you still could drift trough the entire corner. i loved the drifting progression as a kid back in the day. it felt like i was really learning how to drift.
I swear, i played this at my grandmothers house with my ps2 on my grandmothers small black tube tv. Maaaaan i haven't played the game ever since but it was good game!
I can also confirm that it's a strange feeling when playing these games on an emulator after not playing them for over a decade!
i actually played this game when i was young, but i forgot about this game ,tks for reminding me about this game man.
i did play it,beat all roll up race can unlock the hidden hot spot just after mazda dealer. i just hate the wall physics makes it hard to play on some rivals, they don't given names of roll up rivals
This game deserves a PC port with upgraded graphics, kinda like what they did with NFS MW and Carbon Redux. I remember playing this in the PS2 and having so much trouble adapting to the physics, especially for drifting, but man did I love going around the limited Wangan.
YES! ive never seen a video on this thanks for giving recognition to this cool game
you know its a good day when mrxbas uploads

Another important character that you can encounter is Brian Connor himself! Also has a cool bio text under his car when you find his challenge :)
I had this game when I was kid and I remember enjoying it. Just driving on the highway was a lot of fun. I got it at a GameStop for $10 used at the time
Oh... So that's why I cant win against Han using my 86. That's because the game simply doing giveaway to him as soon as I hit the nos!😮
I remember playing this game many years ago
Also played both PAL and NTSC versions
If I'm being honest, I really love NTSC version because it got so many american cars and honda cars too
Im so happy that one of my fav racing games from PS2 finally getting its props
As a Ford Focus (non-SVT model) owner, you earned a subscriber.
the random opponents go with the cars you currently use, it was pretty easy to get them spawning once you get that, you can't get them all in a fully upgraded car for example, you need to work your way in different cars and setups. that game was really good i still own it. but damn the drifting at the end game was ridiculously hard.
i legit had this game and it was super fun. i knew i wasn't going crazy when i could find literally NOTHING on this game when i was trying to look it up a long time ago. Glad it's getting some recognition now. this was a fun game when i was a kid Loved the car customizations too.
The drift battles you could cheese by doing donuts near the finish lol that’s how I made it easy as a kid
Good times.
the game designe is great exept the driving physique
love the grand turismo menus back song
Very good video. This game is sweet I loved how many car options there is and how many of the car options are actually true jdm gems.
I had heard of this game quite before, but I didn't get the chance to try out and after watching this video, it feels like it's kind of interesting a bit to me and I will consider trying out one day, maybe on either the PS2 one or the PSP one. Kinda decent and respect to this fellow banger 💖
Bro, I remember owning this game. That was a blast from the past.
something I am surprise this review didn't mention was the huge amount of roads, exits and entire section of the highway being block off or unfinish.
@@mrxbas ah, shit, guess i was wrong with the LFA then. At least ee have the same kind of fun with these two cars, isn't it? :D
@@RosyMiranto Definitely, the LFA is absolutely stupid when maxed out :D
Remember playing this when I was a kid. Good game overall, loved it and brought me some nostalgia.
looking at the gameplay trailer for the Genki developed F&F game, im guessing they took that and turned it into Racing Battle C1GP, a Japan only racing game that's just TXR but on closed tracks and the highways are turned into closed track as well
