Very nice video man thank you. I post my notes here for a quick reference.
    1. Levelling - processing - before after. Level match
    2. Too much processing. Minimize. Why you do every move.
    3. Do not process before volume levelling and panning. Gain staging. Listen carefully before processing.
    4. Soloing too much
    5. Not monitoring at different levels. Reference level. Very low volume = vocals test. 60% medium level. High level low end test.
    6. Too many stereo tracks. Mono tracks create wideness.
    7. Not using different verbs
    8. Not using automation. Amateurs vs pros.
    9. Not commiting. Toolbox, limited amount of plugins that you know very good. Deadlines.
    10. Establish what are the most important elements in the mix. Some elements will have to be more prominent than others.

I like the advice you give in this video. My loose set of rules for top-down mixing is as follows:
    1. Static Mix with pan and levels
    2. Processing on the 2-buss
    3. Processing on the groups
    4. Processing on the individual channels
    5. Automation
This way I don't lose the big picture and only have to fix problems left over after doing the main things, instead of getting every individual channel to sound "perfect" before even starting playing them together. Sounds trivial, but it was a big thing for me that I realized after watching Al Schmitt's workflow.

  • @alessandrosummer

Great video David! Agree with ALL your points - especially on the automation one: I love spending a lot of time to automate everything (sometimes mangling the crap out of some tracks to give them a cool effect). I'd like to add some that you didn't mention -probably not to make the video too long: underprocessing - especially some genres need a lot of compression, EQ... to bring out the energy (think of how much metal drums are processed); top down mixing, especially starting by doing a ton of processing on the mixbus (still trying to understand why the hell are some people still promoting that); and obviously trying to make some sh1t tracks sound good in the mix: if they're really bad there's not a chance they will sounds great, even today that you can do really a lot.

Absolutely brilliant video. To watch over and over again. As a beginner, I'll include it as part of my work flow 😀
Especially tip number 1...I've figured that out some weeks ago. I wasn't able to hear Eq/compression... I've realized that I wasn't level matching, at all... Once you start doing that you also start to really train your ears against both eq and compression
Thank you a lot 😀 keep you with these amazing videos!!! Cheers from Italy 🇮🇹 ciaoooo

Amazing info Dave and great tutorial. I may add. When you set your limitations specially on due time, also set a limiting time to work. Is very simple and I like using when I mix at home.
1:- Have a fresh start with a ruff mix early in the morning, 30 minutes on to it. Ruff is done. Breakfast brake and resart again. Question your self what change? And make your choice on it by routing a mind map of the song. (Any way or technic is find)
2.- the next shift should last around 4 hours for lunch, if you are sleepy after eating with is normal is also normal to reset your ears by taking a nap during the day other wise, if you think can last without by the time you are rapping up and you are tired what quality of descition can you take to finished your mix.
If you got burnout during your working day most likely your judgement for adjustments too. Our mind is no diferentes from a cpu prosessor it needs to cool down and you be surprise how much.
I can go for days but I think you got my point, thanks Dave greetings from Mexico City
