Lack of low end in your master could also just mean that you need to go back to the mix and adjust the bass. After all, aren't problematic masters the fault of mix issues. Hope I didn't bother.
When I was teaching audio mixing I used to say: don't struggle finding the problem in solo if you cannot hear it in context! Masking for instance is not always a problem. Complete separation in the mix with almost no masking at all doesn't sound good. There's a place for "beautiful masking" in every mix. Mixing is about connecting sounds, not separating them, I think.
@@AlexNiedt That would depend on the genre of music. In edm for instance, which i produce and competely in the box, my mixes need to be super loud - 6 lufs! and the kick and snare need to be separated from the rest of the mix. Everything needs to duck out of the way. In dance music you need to compromise a lot to be at competetative loudness, therefore the m ixes can't be too cluttered and each frequency needs space. Spearation is key in electronic dance music but at the same time blended together with gentle 12b eq curves..
@@jonathanoates1972 I think you've missed the point. Every mix has some degree of masking, and trying to do away with it entirely is a futile effort. As for EDM, as loud as it is, it's often practically a wall of sound, and elements are far from disconnected. Also, consider all the layering done in EDM. That is literally creative, desirable masking.
@@AlexNiedt Hey Alex, great channel btw. No i've not missed anything and i wasn't implying that masking should be eliminated. But there are genres of muisic that require greater separation than others EDM being one of them. When your track is played in a club envirnonmnet with terrible reflections bouncing everywhere you need your mix to be transparant and clear. IN that type of situation if you've not paid attention to your kick and snare and made sure everything is ducked out of the way, it will sound very bad in the space. Especially at the luf levels dance music is produced at. There of course will be some gentle masking going where by you have some cross over points in the spectrum, you can't have razor cut separation, that would sound awful. But in dance music because of the high loudness levels there most certainly needs far more separation than say a down tempo mid bass track produced at 10 - 14 lufs. It's simply the way it is for loud club environment dance music played in those types of spaces. Besides we have to work in a much smaller dynamic range if we want it this loud. There has to be trade offs with your sound design, arrangement, and mix, other wise you simply can't produce loud enough mixes.
One of my clients wanted to go to a local "cheap" Mastering Engineer. First thing he did was Nº1 Mistake, ending up cutting 6 or 8 imaginary resonances on my mixes, then, he had his outboard with fixed settings for the whole 11 songs album (Mistake Nº 8, but on steroids), after he drived the mix about 6dbs with a hardware saturator, no level matching (Mistake Nº10). When he asked me if I liked it, and I suggested level matching, he just said I was "wrong". He had a student in his room, his student will be far better trained subscribing David's channel. No need to said, I ended up mastering myself (Mistake Nº 11)
I went to a friend's studio and they had a bunch of guys there that were a part of the label they had and I remember them messing my track up so bad.. first they tried to have me record out of tune and key like way out. I couldn't even hold a harmony. I tried to tell the guy then he asked everyone and they were like no its good so I had to press the issue to get him to change the key. He then proceeds to ruin the first step along with several others.. I told another friend about this situation and he said that when guys have in-house engineers and ppl signed to them or their crowd around that they will try to diminish other artists if they sounded better.. idk if that's what was going on but I know I was upset at how the engineers didn't want to follow me like I had no idea wtf was going on
Mistakes specifically I want to remember: #1 - Dont use a narrow Q when looking for resonances (1:31) #2 - Sweeping to find frequences to cut or boost - try to guess the frequencies first, this trains your ear #3 - Using too much EQ/trying to solve everything by EQ - overly eq'd material sounds unnaturaleverything #4 - Dont be scared of boosting, subtractive eq is as useful as additive eq #5 - Only using parametric eqs, infinite options doesnt mean better, classic eqs have limitations but this makes you be more conscious and selective about the frequency #6 - Dont low cut or high cut by default, make it a conscious decision, maybe use a low/high shelf #7 - Try buss eq'ing first before doing solo material #8 - Way too much top end boosting, our brain thinks anything that is brighter is better) - the magic is in the mids, its always the mids

I think in my experience (25years) every time I’ve done mono maker in the low end it doesn’t solve any low end problems for me….no matter how small I go. The solution for me is entirely cutting the stereo side of the low end right out almost to about -8….not outta the mids but outta the sides only. It just seems to work better than mono maker for me and give that nice low end pur to the subs. I gotta say though….your videos teach me things regardless of what I know already….you really do know your stuff! Thanks again!
Nice vid. I had a eq "penny drop" moment when watching a clip with Andy Wallace. From memory he was eqing the 1khz area of a kick drum and he mentioned that he likes to make sure that that area of the kick is hitting the listener at the same level as the 1khz area of the gtrs. So he really isn't listening to the kick but rather listening to how that portion of the kick is balanced to the same freq area of the gtrs. Makes total sense.

5:00 I remember that. It was Graham Cochrane, Recording Revolution who recommended that. He was one of the earliest "YT-mixers" doing videos. And guess what, the guy is still sitting in his garage/bedroom studio. Lolz.
The part about some EQs being too powerful is something I recently discovered about myself. I tend to overdo EQ simply because I can. So, recently I've gone back to the basics, and I put SSL channel strip on every track in my template. If I need EQ on the track, that's what I start with, and I only use another EQ if I can't get what I need with SSL. I've discovered that I usually can get what I need with it. This may not be the way I'll be working 10 years in the future (who knows?), but it's working well for me at this stage. Great video!
2:00 Video on Analyser Calibration PLEASE 🥺 and where to place it in the Vocal Chain Please Many dont know that it sounds different with each button you change going from medium to fast and so on and when you cut or boost frequency aswell, SIR you are a true LEGEND and i was stuck for years on thinking it sounds great but theres something up and this was one of the eq tricks that did it which i figured out and ended up with the exact same settings as you, 90 db maximum medium and 0db only last week i got this result 🤣😭🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
wow. first I came across Heritage Audio Symph EQ Stereo Asymptotic Equalizer. Then listening to the music on the video got my attention. Did they ran mix through this EQ. Then I had to see if there's TH-cam review on it. Came across this channel. After watching the review on this channel confirms my suspicion. I went ahead and order the Heritage Audio Symph EQ Stereo Asymptotic Equalizer, This video totally confirms what some of pro live mixing engineers also like to do.
I love getting advice from creators of music/ genres outside my own (house / hip hop) because you guys notice and explain stuff I wouldn’t think about otherwise. So sending lots of appreciation. And in that spirit: #11 also applies to the other end of the frequency spectrum (especially for bass driven music). For too long I was getting overexcited by boosting the low end because i thought it would give me the thump I wanted. It also resulted in muddy mixes. So the same advice here in reverse - tame that excitement, roll off that bottom end and slowly work it back. Once I learned that, the mix starting actually thumping precisely because there was less mud. It also helped create a better relationship between the kick and bass. Great vid, I learned a lot.
Agree with you David! Especially on the EQ on the mix bus: I honestly hardly use it since you have way more possibilities to f*ck up the mix; and also not EQing in solo a lot: I feel that boosting top and bottom end - while heavily scooping the mids - is more due to this than to not level matching (which don't get me wringis very important, especially for beginners) because cutting the muddiness and the honk always sounds great in solo, but in the context of the mix it... really sucks. I would have added this one: not automating EQ/using dynamic EQ especially for tracks that change a lot during the song (e.g: a distorted guitar pretty much always needs some cuts - or even better multi-band compression - when they're played with palm mutes, but very rarely need it when they're not).
Great on point video man. I have most def made many of these mistakes. Hell even sometimes today still lol. Eq in solo was a big one for me. Even more was not EQ'ing as a default thing. Sometimes leaving the sound alone is the best option, OR eq another sound vs the one you think is the issue.

Yeah. I learned to avoid the too narrow resonance search by doing it too narrow. I really couldn’t determine which frequency is really resonant and which is not, because everything was sounding resonant. But there are videos out there of people who love this method. Perhaps they have trained themselves into spotting the right frequencies that way. But I find it easier to do what you‘re doing. If a frequency is resonant or sounds nasty I will find it even if it‘s not boosted by max dB. 🙂
funny enough my brain can't stand bright things, even down to frequencies so I've always made my mixes too "Dark" in the past month I've been using Izotope Total Balance and to help with that but I can't see myself ever being a GREAT mixer with my brain going "Turn down the high frequencies" all the time lol
I'm extremely sentitive to high frequencies, some people are, and most people can't hear that high because they use earbuds and headphones a lot and/or play stuff too loud. With enough experience you can actually be potentially better than most becauase your earing is more accurate
I use the first one, narrow boost sweep, only to help me determine where exactly is the frequency that I already know I want to cut. I don't use it to 'hunt for' offending frequencies, because, like you said, they will all be offending when boosted.

The Waves API 550B is one of my favorite EQs. It is very flexible and sounds fantastic on a number of instruments and vocals.
It's my favourite workhorse classic EQ as well.

It all comes down to this: "The less processing you need to do, the better it sounds."
Number 10 that's why I balance boosts and cuts instead of only boosting and only cutting.

I'm extremely sentitive to high frequencies, some people are, and most people can't hear that high because they use earbuds and headphones a lot and/or play stuff too loud. With enough experience you can actually be potentially better than most becauase your earing is more accurate

I use the first one, narrow boost sweep, only to help me determine where exactly is the frequency that I already know I want to cut. I don't use it to 'hunt for' offending frequencies, because, like you said, they will all be offending when boosted.
