    This is amazing - from the sound of the crowd, the crispness of the video - theres so much life in this clip - really allows you to see and appreciate the game and skill (btw west did have a bit of a left it seemed)

      lol - now that I know guys like Stockton had even less of a left hand it makes me question how important it was. West's ace in the hole isn't seen in this video, but he would REALLY drive left hard with 2 dribbles and pull up for his jump shot to keep the defense honest. It was a shot and drive that looks like he practiced 100x a day. It can be seen in his 69 Finals 4th quarter footage. Maybe I'll 60fps that next. Thanks for watching and commenting, and keep up the great vids yourself!

    It's obvious these guys are not plumbers, and they are not devoted to exerting much energy on defense. NBA historians will know this was during a period where offense was king. Getting up and down the floor and launching as many shots as possible was the primary focus of the league. League average was 115.3 ppg (no threes!) and shooting 44.1%. The worst shooting team? The Celtics at 42.7%. The best rebounding and assists average per game? The Celtics at 72.7 and 24.5. 73 rebounds per game?! That's 73 missed shots and teams are still averaging 115 ppg. I started watching the NBA in 1964 and had no idea how different the league would become over my lifetime. This video is a great means for showing how the game is both different and the same over time.

    Unbelievable footage! The Logo was way ahead of his time. Crazy handles, unguardable jump shots and strong defence. Also LaRusso would be a solid stretch-4 today.

    • @r0drig0lac1

      Ás
      the human being is adaptable to the rules of the time, imagine today's players having violations for ball driving, they would have to play differently, but to give a practical example see Lew Alcindor who faced old Wilt (who had faced Bill Russell) , this same Lew faced Walton and even old, destroyed old Akeem (which was the best center of the 90's), that Akeem faced Lew, Ewing, Shaq and D-Rob, and Shaq faced Duncan, etc. etc., any human adapts the rules, talent is born with them and only needs to be developed

    • @Ah-ws9nm
      @Ah-ws9nm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rodrigo Correa But you’re talking between the span of a few years. This man played 55 years ago. And there was no rule saying they couldn’t use their left hand or that they couldn’t dribble between their legs. I just don’t see how dominant people say he was.

    • @wader0073

      Wilt Chamberlain Archive easy it is allen iverson. He has the best handles ever. And he crossed over michael jordan as a rookie.

    • @WiltChamberlainArchive
      @WiltChamberlainArchive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The answer is they all use their left hand and "go left" about equally often - save for Stockton, who did so least of all these guys. Everyone rips West for being 1 hand dominant but I always think - do the people ripping West for this know how other legends played the game?

    • @wader0073
      @wader0073 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wilt Chamberlain Archive there is a reason he is the logo. Ofc he had much skill. But would you take rather jerry west or allen iverson to cross someone over?

    • @ToadInTheWoods
      @ToadInTheWoods 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's an interesting discussion if people don't get too emotionally invested. Of those, I don't remember Stockton having a weak hand, but if you brought him up in this context, he might have. Magic and Iverson both strongly favored the right, everyone knew it, and no defender co'uld do anything about it. Same for West. I'm old enough that as a little kid in the early 70s West was who I tried to model my game after (in my dreams), and I had an instructional book he had authored (actually, the local library had it, and I kept it constantly checked out). West's book said you should be equally comfortable with both hands, and I noticed even then as a kid in real time that he hadn't actually achieved that. Ball-handling did change through the 70s and 80s and that's a fact. Earl Monroe and guys like that were the forerunners. West was definitely an old school ball handler. He got his shot off without great one-on-one moves, with a defender right on him, all the time, using a quick elevation and release, and an understanding of positioning. You could cover him, but you couldn't stop him.

    • @pebutts
      @pebutts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      West was a right handed player and right eye dominant. He was going to go right most of the time, because he could protect the ball better while setting up for his shot. It's faster to get off your shot that way too, giving the defender less time to react. Furthermore, most players are right handed and will instinctively reach with that hand to try to contest a shot. If you're a right handed player going left, you have to bring the ball to the defender's dominant hand in order to shoot.
      It's pretty easy to defend someone who can't dribble with their off hand. You set up defensively a step to his strong side and crowd that hand. If he can't use the other one he'll have to pass off or he'll turn the ball over. And yet amazingly enough nobody from that era seemed to want to play Jerry West strong on his right hand. Teams back then played each other six or eight times a season. Do you really think they wouldn't have figured out that he couldn't go left? It's pretty much impossible to be a good scorer if you can only dribble one way, let alone an all time great one like West.
      West played for fourteen seasons, in over a thousand games counting regular season and playoffs. He averaged over 20 ppg every season of his career except his rookie year and over thirty points four times. He averaged over thirty in the playoffs seven times (including forty once, the only guy other than Jordan ever to do it). He was the primary guy you had to stop in order to defeat the Lakers, particularly after Baylor hurt his knee, but people expect everyone to believe that nobody ever said "hey, this guy can't use his left hand" if he couldn't dribble that way? It's ridiculous.

    • @ToadInTheWoods
      @ToadInTheWoods 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you think West is equally strong with both hands, you can't see.

Basketball history is kind of a niche topic, that's why I think my sub count may never be super high. No one into basketball history should bet be off-put by Wilt Chamberlain's name
