  • The MicroMinimOSD is a super cheap little device that works great in a Mini quad with a Naze-style flight controller, but is just as useful as a standalone OSD.
    In part 1 of this video we'll look at exactly how you configure/flash the device to act as a simple voltage display/timer and then in part 2 we'll add in a GPS receiver to make a more fully featured OSD.

    Just wanted to say thanks, this is exactly what I was lookin for. I tried a super simple osd, but it's bigger, cost more, and the voltage was off with no way to correct it. I've seen these tiny things for so cheap, but didn't know if they could work standalone. I was considering the cameras with osd, but don't wanna spend that much for all my fpv models, when they already have cams on them.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem. It's nice to know this still has some purpose. Now that flight controllers with inbuilt osd's and voltage displays in cameras have become the norm, the use of the MicroMinimOSD has sort of died off, but there's always a place :)

    • @CurryKitten

      Yep - you could have car speed, distance from home and direction back to your home point. Seems like altitude would be a bit of a waste on a rover, but you can customize the OSD how you want it

    Hi Curry Kitten I have my osd and gps all setup and working great powering the minim and gps through a ubec and a cap for filtering everything else. All i have left to do is calibrate the Voltage and amps on the osd .I have read the minim has an osd menu that you can access with stick movements .Would i right in assuming i cannot do this with this configuration and i would need to be running through a flight controller to access the menu.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes when you wire to a flight controller to attach to a UART and have tx/rx pins to control things. How we've setup in this video is just a simple OSD-goes-on-top-of-video sort of thing. There's changes in the source you'd make as well so it would work on betaflight, for example, I used it years ago before OSD's being embedded in FCs was a thing.

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main difference is that there's a Chrome based configurator for it - which is paid for - but not too much. You can still go the 1.6 route if you want to do it all for free though.

    Im a bit confused Wayne....If I use the new MWOSD configurator APP, is that all I need..?....Or do I have to use the other software as well...?...Confused..?

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You still need to do the few changes in the arduino IDE and then compile/write to the board. The new Chrome app is a replacement for the previous GUI to setup the actual OSD

    • @EnglishTurbines
      @EnglishTurbines 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, thanks for that. It's not like Arduplane then where you can upload firmware and configure the OSD layout all inside the one package..?.....If not, why not..?..I assume in the old GUI....you can do it all..?...No wonder Im confused,..lol.

  • @EnglishTurbines
    @EnglishTurbines 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice Video Wayne....It will be more worthy once the GPS is on it for sure...Tempted to try MWOSD on my Minim too now.....Is it more reliable than Arduplane?

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That I can't tell you - but I did have a minim on a copter based ardu, and I couldn't get it to work right at all. Just wouldn't request the right data from the ardu - so I'll have to go back and try it with mwosd. I tried a GPS on a walk around the park today. It works well. Complete OSD for £10 :)

    • @EnglishTurbines
      @EnglishTurbines 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Im interested to see how the GPS works out for sure. My Skylark Tiny is pretty good for the money and is small, but this looks like it will be even smaller. The GPS altitude will be pants of course, but the direction pointer accuracy will be interesting....My Skylark does not have the benefit of a compass either, but the basic GPS has saved my bacon more than once. Be interested to see it on a plane, at range, being used to the full extent during testing....I guess it might pay to use a good GPS puck also..?

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose the test is how usable is it using cheap and cheerful components. This will never go to a serious range - as I start to like using a decent AP for that - but I'll hope to get some decent test flights with it and see how it performs

    • @EnglishTurbines

    This is a good watch, CurryKitten. I am pretty clueless on how all this stuff works in the bigger picture, do I need an OSD? Does a Pixhawk Mini come with an OSD or those F4's? Am I free to pick and mount any OSD I like, or does it need to be compatible with the flight controller? Do I need to program ESC's (I read comments from racers talking about flashing them)? If my motors only draw 20A but my ESCs are 80A in total do they need calibration to work or will they work automatically? LOL as you can see, some of us are starting out from the buttomless pit of newbie skill levels and a bit info here and there like you are doing here is helping a lot :)

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So many questions all at once :) ..and like many things the answer to them are usually "it depends" Exectly what are you wanting to fly/build to start with. Why do I ask ? Well the Pixhawk is a fairly full-featured autopilot, but it's not especially easy to config (many will disagree) and it's generally for your certain type of quad/plane - i/e a larger one where you might want to mess with automonous flight modes and have it RTH if you are feeling lazy. Does it comes with an OSD, no - it's the "usual" thing to use the minimOSD on the pixhawks which are very fussy about their voltages where you are flashing the font files over ! You can add standalone OSDs, and they will just grab infomation from their own GPS and based data on that, the idea of something like a minim is that it will talk to the flight controller and give you specific information (such as flight modes, way points etc) that a standalone one cannot. Do you need one ? Depends, what are you wanting to fly and what sort of flying do you want to do ?
      You only need to worry in ESC terms if your motor is able to pull more than the ESC can support. So 20A motors coupled with 80A escs means that your ESCs won't break into a sweak, but you might be carrying more weight than you need (unless you mean that each motor is 20a and you have 80a ESC total... in which case is looks fairly well matched)
      Calibration depends on what you are flying (again) and the type of ESC protocol that's being used. If you can fill in the details on what you are flying/intending to fly then I'll try and give a bit more info about what you might/might not need

    • @imemyself2820
      @imemyself2820 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I did not expect you to answer those questions they were merely an indicator of where I am starting out. Thank you so much for your reply, now I know I didnt waste my money on parts I dont need :) But if you dont mind, yes I am building on a custom CF 500 mm frame with 2204 motors 1960kv Cobra's, 6040 props and 4 20A Hobbywing ESCs and a compact gimbal of sorts with either a Runcam Split or a Box camera. I am aiming for a DIY mavic-style quad with Lidars, payload dropper, searchlights on an extra motor connected to the gimbal controller and a trying to make a parachute work could be dead fun :) However, point-and-click is not my idea of a flying experience, I just need long flight times and safety like RTH because I am a newbie and that extra stuff is just for fun, probably too ambitious :)

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like fun - nothing wrong with being ambitious :) Ok, so back in the day... and by day I mean around 2012 this size of quad was all the range, but one thing I'd mention is that we tended to use larger props at a lower KV. So the almost ubiqutous DJI f450 flamewheel quad used 2212 920kv motors spinning a 10" props (on 3s) and was a fairly good lifting platform. 6" props on a 500mm quad does seem a bit small, but I haven't tried to calculate lift on that kv/props so perhaps it's all good.
      You might want to look at something like iNav on a standard flight controller for a cheaper way of getting some autopilot stuff. Get something like an Omnibus board and you have the OSD built in. You then just need to pair it with a GPS and then go through quite a lot of tutorials about how to set it all up.
      As far as ESC protocols go, if your ESCs can run Dshot 600 then you'll get a smoother response and don't need to calibrate them. The Oneshot protocols are pretyt good still, but will need motor calibration. If your ESCs don't at least do oneshot125, then these days you should really consider changing them

    • @CurryKitten
      @CurryKitten  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is ! I haven't done it myself yet... there's that slightly annoying thing that the minim can insist on having several types of power when flashing stuff... fonts at least IIRC. I think I needed both a 12v and 5v supply just to install a font without it corrupting ! (I think that was with ArduCam and I can't recall the OSD firmware I was running)

      It's not. So the idea was here that I show where to download the MWOSD firmware, then showed where to download the Arduino IDE from, what I'm showing at 4:45 is what was contained within the zip file from the MWOSD download. That page is from finder, which is the Mac equivalent of explorer in windows - so just a file/directory browser.
