Congrats on getting an affiliate link, hope you get a little kickback! You've clearly been working hard on these and I'm sure the opportunities will only get bigger from here.
Thanks Eric, and thanks for your continued viewership. It’s a lot of work, but I enjoy a project with a beginning middle and end, and this lets me work on something unique and creative. Weird hobby, but rewarding.
Thanks! Sometimes these pedals come out with a ton of info and it's like... just another overdrive. This time, it's actually doing something pretty interesting and it's played off like it's nothing more than an EQ.
Thought about picking one of these up as a poor man's Deco... Ultimately think it wouldn't quite scratch the itch bc with no LFO on that delay time can't get flangey!
Totally. One of the plugins I usually throw on my master bus for my demo jams is SDRR from Klanghelm. It's a touch of saturation and compression, basically a "glue" to keep the mix from sounding too busy. I've always felt like it made my jams a little more like a product than just a recording. I think that's the idea behind the JHS Colour Box as well.
@@StompboxBreakdown the colour box is a wish list item of mine!! I’m always surprised how much my 1 knob Echoplex Preamp pedal does the same kinda thing. Warms and boosts a specific range.
Ahhh, you beat me to it! I was only thinking the other day about doing a demo of this one. Haha! Great minds. What a weird pedal. Great to hear how it sounds after all those digital effects, although I can't be the only one who was hoping to hear it after the Miku and Fart pedal. 😜 Massive congrats on the new partnership! I'm sure it'll mean you get to try even more, cool stuff in the future! 👍
Thanks a million, man. I was gonna bust out the other digital pedals but I think that’s a “sometimes” treat. zZounds has been the best, I’m glad to have found a company that gets it.
+1 to the "what is digital" suggestion...getting very tired explaining it sonically to folks, would be great to have a comparative with scientific backing at hand!
Awesome! What a great channel! I've never really understood what the EHX Analogizer did but was always interested. This is the most in depth description that I've heard related to that pedal. Thank you!
Thank you so much!! This one was a tricky video to chart out but I’m happy with how it turned out. I hope you enjoy your new pedal and I super super appreciate you using my link!!
Great demo! My first encounter with your channel, and it appeals strongly to my inner (okay, also outer...) pedal geek streak (the bit of me that doesn't necessarily NEED that much technical detail, but absolutely insists on having it anyway). Found you because I've been looking into this pedal specifically and yeah, I definitely want one.
Thanks! I'll have to try and get my hands on one of those. Right now, I've got such a backlog of pedals I want to get to that I'm enjoying *not* having to buy things for a little while.
I love the black Mistress just like it is. Use it all the time. My "go to" setting is noon for rate, the chorus and flange both at 9:00, but still, it's a cheap pedal so your setting may differ. I used to read and hear about the whole digital vs. analog thing since the '80s and after thinking I might be hearing a difference when I was younger, it makes zero difference to me. I am interested in this pedal as a boost with an EQ coloration. Thanks for doing this one.
I wish my Black Mistress sounded like this, mine must be broken. It sounds like it screws up your original guitar eq sound just too much and that’s too bad because I love it otherwise.
I like to set both of them on the subtle side, just to kind add a bit of compression and saturation to kinda glue everything together. At my preferred settings, they sound pretty similar. When yo really push them, the Analogizer gets into overdrive a bit more readily than the Secret Preamp. That said, I’m not really sold on the addition of the BBD as a real bonus, at least not for what I’m after. Definitely if you’ve got a delay or chorus that’s too bright, but for me, it’s a bit unnecessary. Personally, as a tone sweetener, throw the Secret Preamp at the end of your signal chain and that’s where it works the best. It’s fixed so many problems where the guitar just wasn’t resting well in the mix.
Im stuck between 2 pedals atm...Do you think it's worth getting a.chasetone secret preamp and the analogizer to combine??? or do they do something very similar? If so which do you recommend?
They’re very similar as a “last stop” pedal to kind of gel everything together and saturate it a little in a solid state kinda way. The Analogizer is so inexpensive in comparison, I’d start there, it’ll give you a good approximation of what the Secret Preamp is doing. Combining them would likely be overkill when you could just turn up the drive on one of them.
@@StompboxBreakdown @StompboxBreakdown thanks dude, I appreciate the advice, i was struggling to understand if the chasetone would have the warming effect for the digital delays..... I'm ordering the super ego+, grand canyon, and oceans 12.....and i couldn't tell how effective the chasetone would act for digital rigs so it sent me down the rabbit hole of and it came down to the Analogizer and the secret preamp.. But you probably right I will test the analogizer and if its good I will get the chasetone , as I'm planning a stereo rig so I can put them on separate outputs to colour each amps sound to add more variance 😂
@@conordyer2307 NOW you're talking, with the stereo outputs, haha. I should do a blind A/B test between the Secret Preamp and the Analogizer one of these days. I'm more drawn towards the Secret Preamp but I think a lot of that has to do with just the way it looks and feels. It more closely resembles something my grandfather would have in his ham radio room. I mean, make no mistake, it also makes a discernible difference in the overall sound, too... I'm just a sucker for a good looking piece of gear with a backstory, though.
I know you said compander, but I think the expander isn't working as hard. It definitely sounds more compressed. Like obviously compressed, the attack totally squashed. It would be pretty easy to test this if someone who has one would like.
I also use some compression when I record to keep things audible/from clipping, and then TH-cam adds their compression in as well. It's hard to get real audio demo clips out on the internet outside of sending raw files around. I think I'd say that the pedal adds compression, but isn't a compressor in the effect sense... if that makes sense. I think it's safe to say that its goal is to dull some of the edges and harshness that a pure digital might exhibit. It's emulating the saturation and compression that comes from transistor and chip-based electronics.
@@StompboxBreakdown Ok that makes more sense. I watched some more of your videos and I hear it on all your videos. I'd suggest you use a better sounding compressor and increase the attack time, the pumping is very distracting. Otherwise I enjoyed your vids, thanks for taking the time with the hardwire pedals.
Anything can be a preamp if you believe in yourself! You might want some additional boosting and EQ flexibility going into a power amp, but to give some flavor before amplification, I bet the drive could be nice.
Love your breakdowns. This pedal has always confused me as it’s sort of a case where how it’s marketed and what the intent of the design doesn’t really say what it is. As someone who knows electronics and pedals, if someone said, “it’s a short analog delay and a dirty preamp” that makes sense to me, but how EHX markets it makes it seem like it’s something way more magical than it actually is. I suppose that’s just because my brain works one way and other people work a different way. I love EHX since the dawn of time but I feel a little insulted when a pedal maker “dumbs down” a product in order to sort of cover up what it’s actually doing. No matter how good they sounded, snobby me dismissed all the Lamb-era DOD stuff just because they labeled controls things like “butt” and “face”. I was an adult, not Beavis nor Butthead at the time. Ha! Am I crazy? Anyway, thanks for the breakdown
I think it's a tough balance that pedalmakers have to make. The saying goes "Sell the sizzle, not the steak" and if you only have your audience's attention for a few seconds and a glance, it probably makes sense to front-load your ad copy with as many adjectives as possible, rather than leading with a technical description that might be boring to most people. My own preference is the way Digitech wrote their manuals back in the 90's, which lead with the description, then as you dug deeper, it felt like the engineer got their spot to explain what they pulled off. The 2101/2112 manuals are epic in length, but were also just dripping with detail that you tend to appreciate once the first few hours of exploring are over. When I do these videos, I try not to watch any other pedal channel videos about them in advance, because I want to make sure my take is my own and not influenced by someone else. That make is *really* hard to figure out what the heck some of EHX's pedals do before it shows up in my mailbox.
@@StompboxBreakdown you’re right. I realize that I’m a different kind of consumer in that respect, so I’m the misfit here, haha! You really do a great job with these. Back to watch this episode again. One of my favorites about solving a minor internet mystery…
The saturation and slapback of the Analogizer reminds me of the Strymon Deco, in a "Simpsons predicted the future" type of way.
Oh is that what that does? Interesting! And I’m always down for a Simpsons reference
Thought about picking one of these up as a poor man's Deco... Ultimately think it wouldn't quite scratch the itch bc with no LFO on that delay time can't get flangey!
IMHO this effect recreates the sound of listening to the final product through an FM radio 📻. Great episode as always. Congrats on the affiliate link.
