Can't wait to see the reviews for the newer veloster n coming out next year with the 8 speed wet dct transmission with the 2.5t delivering around 300hp and around 300ft lbs of torque.
Surprising you said it's lighter...because it's actually a fairly heavy car for it's size (and technically the N isn't even the same size as the others mentioned) A civic Si is the lightest as 2899lbs Then is the GTI at 3062lbs Then the N 3106lbs Then the CTR at 3120lbs. (all the numbers are the lightest "listed" weights) Perhaps the lightness feel and tossibility just comes from being smaller and the shorter wheel base...
Matt isnt really a track guy. I doubt he knows what "tossability" really is. The civic type r can hang the rear wheels out like a drift if you push it hard enough. And it corners at a way higher G then the n. If anything the type r is the more tossable car.
I wish Hyundai just had better support in terms of aftermarket parts. I feel like that's why some buyers look at other hatches because it's much easier and affordable for modifying.
You’re my gold standard when it comes to backseat space reviews because we’re the same height lol. I personally would love an Elantra N sedan, but i don’t think that’s in the works. Also would love to see the return of the Genesis Coupe. For the VeloN, i wish it would get an AWD treatment. You’re right that we don’t give a shit about cheap plastic. I’m also glad they omitted all the electronic nannies (lane keep assist and whatnot). ABS and easily-defeatable TCS are all we need. Proud of them for using analog gauges because digital gauges are retarded if we’re honest. Nothing more than a gimmick in a time when tech is all the rage. They are useless in glare, fade over time, look stupid when the car is off, and lack the charm of 3-dimensional gauges. The only reason super cars have digital gauges is because they rev too fast for analog gauges to keep up. In a 4-cylinder ecobox, digital doesn’t make sense at all. Good on Hyundai for not eliminating the volume knobs and handbrakes like Honda. I think it’s a common misconception that new = better. Sometimes, things are clearly moving in the wrong direction, and i like to see cars like the VeloN stand their ground.
There's rumors that they're working on an AWD system to pair with the N powertrain for the i30N in Europe and it would probably appear on the Tucson N as well. Hopefully it gets worked into the Veloster as an option too.
Hey what's happening Matt I've bump into a a guy driving a Hyundai veloster turbocharged N it's awesome but his's a 2020 Hyundai veloster turbocharged N but his is black ⚫️ & thanks a million for sharing your videos with me I really appreciate it 😊
As a Type R owner, it has 3 huge advantages over the Veloster N--the seats and the shifter and the brakes. The first 2 are absolutely the most important aspects of a performance car, as you need to be comfortable and supported and in addition, you need a communicative and smooth shifter and clutch which are top notch in the CTR. I won't criticize the Veloster N, though, as it is maybe 80 % of the CTR for a $5-6k lower price. I give Hyundai kudos for making an attainable performance car that is way better than a GTI, or for that matter, something like a WRX which is similar in price but using old technology.
The CTR is a more capable car, and in a different class than the N. Hyundai's suspected mid-engined hatch will likely be the car they position to compete with the CTR. The N is dramatically less-expensive, and commonly the price difference is more than 5-6k when considering the N can be purchased well-below MSRP (as the PP N can be purchased for $28k pretty easily here, assuming the CTR is sold without markup for straight MSRP, it's an $8,000 pricing difference at-best.)
so what i get from this is the veloster N is a modern day (hopefully far more reliable) neon srt4. cheap by today's standard with compromises in interior refinement all for the sake of cheap and fun performance.
Wow, that was probably the most concise and clear review of this car I've ever seen. I think Hyundai did a very nice job with their first attempt at a hot hatch. However, The interior is pretty much garbage, the seats are trashy, and the shifter physically is trashy and performance-wise is average, as per the review. I drive the 2018 CTR and I currently have 11,000 mi. I have taken the car on road trips, and daily drive the car in the city every single day. I don't think the CTR should even be compared to this car because frankly, it's just in a different class of handling and performance, not to mention practicality and Honda reliability. Furthermore, the transmission of the CTR is absolutely phenomenal. Between the clutch, shifter, and transmission/engine (K20) that car is such a pleasure to drive every single day. The only edge Hyundai really has on the CTR is the cars ability to adjust almost every single parameter of the suspension and engine options. There are tons of people who complain that the CTR doesn't have a loud exhaust, but the car is already loud in it's appearance, it doesn't need an exhaust to make an entrance or attract attention. Either way, Hyundai did a very nice job with that car and I'm excited to see what they do with their second generation in 2020.
but you are forgetting the big factor with mark up civic type R is like 35-40k, the N starts at 28,000 not to mention looks way better than a type R. the type R looks like someone strolled through auto zone and slapped every cosmetic mod they found on it
@@maxdog421 I disagree. I think the type r looks mean and badass. The nice thing is, not everybody looks at the world the same and not everybody looks at form and fixture the same. You're entitled to your opinion but the rims are ugly on the Hyundai, the interior is piss poor, and Who knows what it's dependability and reliability will be for it has no track record. Meanwhile, the resale value, reliability, dependability, and every other factor goes to the type R.
@@djs18 personally i feel the interior is just fine considering its a 28k car that is about performance and not so much luxury, not to mention hyundais reliability on there new vehicles is great same with kia, prime example the genesis g70 it literally sets the bar for luxury sports sedans and is way more reliable than any audi or bmw. not to mention even if its not for some reason hyundais warranties are second to none. 10 years or 100,000 mile bumper to bumper, i spent 3500 more and opted for the lifetime unlimited bumper to bumper with life time roadside assistance.
DJS I know this comment is a year old but I wanted to say that I disagree with some of your points. While I would LOVE to drive a type r, the Veloster N I just purchased is great. Interior is cheaper but its completely livable and easy to navigate. The seats are comfortable and have a nice design to them. The shifter feels nice, though I haven’t driven a type r so I’m not sure how much better the type r’s is. As for the exhaust, I would have to say that I want a nice exhaust, especially if the exterior is menacing like the type R. I can’t see my car when I’m driving it, but I can hear the exhaust so it adds some of the thrill of owning it. Both cars can do better in some things but both are phenomenal! Hope I can drive a type r soon!
I can’t wait for the next revision, hopefully they up the interior a bit even if it means a few extra grand on the sticker. If they can just revise the problems (clutch/shifter feel amd hard plastics) with this revision on the next release this can be an amazing vehicle.
Hey Matt, should I bother trying to get a 2021-up Veloster N? They’re so hard to find (I want the stick shift) combined with the chip shortage and rough car market right now. Or just settle with a used 2020? I sat in the new 2021 seats and you’re right, they have a ton of lateral support but for a daily driver there’s barely any cushion on them…
Likely because this car doesn't really have a direct competitor. Hyundai intentionally priced it in the class of the GTI/WRX/Si/ST, but put its performance between those cars and the higher tier R/STI/CTR/RS, so its really not clear where this car belongs. It will probably get even murkier if Hyundai releases their mid-engined hatch.
Im sure once the aftermarket gets their hands on this itll be making an easy 300 whp and wtq. It also ways less than 3500 lbs. That's such a good thing for a car under 30k!
some Aussie guy got the i30n (iam 99%) they have the same engine he put an upgraded turbo a cai and and downpipe and an exuast with the a tune and got 360 whp
In other markets, this car comes with full leather, power, heated and ventilated seats as well as a heated wheel. Shame Americans don't at least get the option.
Matt how harsh is the suspension in comfort mode? I had a Focus RS and had to get rid of it because of the super stiff/very harsh ride even in the softest setting. How does the ride quality compare to the Type R?
@Tyler Wilson thanks Tyler. I'm really concerned with the ride quality because I purchased a Ford Focus RS and I had to get rid of it because the ride was so horrible it wasn't enjoyable at all I test drove a Civic type-r and it was fine and comfort mode so I'm hoping the Veloster n in normal will be bearable on the street.
Awesome hatch! I currently have a 2014 Fiesta ST that I love, but this may replace it in a few years. Maybe they will offer some bright metallic paint options going forward. I would love to see a bright green and blue.
You seemed to really like the r-spec version as well. If you weren’t looking to track the cars which would you prefer? The short gearing of the r-spec allowed you to rip through gears, could you do the same with the N? Can you take advantage of the N performance as a daily or does it need a track?
The N has short gearing too. If the price difference doesn't matter, definitely go for the N. The performance is still a lot of fun on the street, it's only 275 hp so you can still drive it hard without going super fast. The sound and customizable N modes also make the N worth the extra money in my opinion. If you're on a tighter budget though, the R-Spec is a ton of fun for the money too, just a little less special.
Hopefully we get that soon as they just released one in some European markets. My best guess would be that it will depend upon the success of the Veloster N.
Only problem is everyone that I know that has owned a hyundai (or Kia) myself included, has had infinite amounts of problems with them and they do not stand behind their factory warranty. I know of 2 personally that died at less than 100k miles, the genesis coupe and the tiburon. (both completely stock)
@Rick James5678 I'm just sharing my experience with this brand and I've known enough owners to form my opinion but I'm glad your cars worked out for ya.
A hot hatch..with zero in it for $30k. No sunroof..no heated and leather seats. Its still pretty cool but they should've gave the elantra the N treatment. Love my ES..this looks really cheap on the inside.
cfairfax85 i agree. I have an es6m and I love everything about it. I want my exact car with the 2.0. I don’t like anything about the N as much as my car.
Depends on your foot and shoe IMHO and if you like heel-toe. If you have wider feet/shoes, it's a good pedal layout for heel-toe. If not, heel-toe is a bit more difficult to perform.
Completely based on your preferences, but it does feel very jarring when you know how to heel toe, and do it often. The feeling is kind of like if one day your passenger decides to move the shift lever for you. It's "better" in that its less work for the driver, but over thousands of shifts, going against your muscle memory feels uncomfortable.
Excellent review, Matt 👍🏻 Let me ask you something. For a father of two kids looking for a fun, yet practical hot hatch; would you recommend this over the Golf GTI?? As of right now I’m leaning heavily towards the GTI for its comfort and practicality, but man this Veloster N sure is making me think twice about my decision.
@@iluvcakes19 the veloster is incredibly practical and the CTR is like 90 pounds less. also your forgetting the big difference a type R with mark up is 35-45k, a veloster N starts at 28k
@@maxdog421 I've seen the CTR weigh anywhere from 40 lbs (3,117) to 90 lbs (3,168 caranddriver comparison) more than the Veloster N, all while being more than 10 inches longer. There is no disputing the veloster's practicality but it is universally known that the CTR more practical. It has more power while returning equal fuel economy; it has more room front and rear; more cargo volume; more headroom and 4 doors (not including the hatch). That 1 less door on the veloster really compromises its practicality compared to the Civic. I would gladly pay the $7k premium to get the Civic until the i30 N makes its US debut. Word has it Hyundai is working on an AWD version of the N. Hopefully we can get that on the Elantra.

A civic Si is the lightest as 2899lbs
Then is the GTI at 3062lbs
Then the N 3106lbs
Then the CTR at 3120lbs.
(all the numbers are the lightest "listed" weights)
Perhaps the lightness feel and tossibility just comes from being smaller and the shorter wheel base...
500 Abarth has them all beat in the lightness category and has the pops and crackles that the CTR and GTi lack.
Matt isnt really a track guy. I doubt he knows what "tossability" really is. The civic type r can hang the rear wheels out like a drift if you push it hard enough. And it corners at a way higher G then the n. If anything the type r is the more tossable car.
Another great review as always Mr. Maran!
Veloster N exhaust/tuning + Honda Civic Type R everything else = Greatest car ever made
So true
Civic type R is fugly.
Man, that thing looks like a blast. Would be an awesome DD!
Been waiting for this, YEEET
What engineer came up with that exhaust backfire? Would’ve liked to have that on my car...
Hey what's happening Matt I've bump into a a guy driving a Hyundai veloster turbocharged N it's awesome but his's a 2020 Hyundai veloster turbocharged N but his is black ⚫️ & thanks a million for sharing your videos with me I really appreciate it 😊
Great review as always Matt! 👍🏼
I want this Veloster N now
so what i get from this is the veloster N is a modern day (hopefully far more reliable) neon srt4. cheap by today's standard with compromises in interior refinement all for the sake of cheap and fun performance.
Nice job young man
You can tell just how amazing this car is by simply watching the faces of these reviewers as they put the pedal down in N mode
Mark G I hear you! Enjoy the car!!
I can’t wait for the next revision, hopefully they up the interior a bit even if it means a few extra grand on the sticker. If they can just revise the problems (clutch/shifter feel amd hard plastics) with this revision on the next release this can be an amazing vehicle.
Why are we talking about a type R that retails for nearly 2x what this one does (more after mark up)
If you're like me and you're too poor for the N, you can get the Rspecs for $19k new. It weighs a bit less and comes with a 1.6T instead.
Yup, I'm getting one when the 2021s come out
In the Type R you have to buy an exhaust. I wonder how the after market will fare with this platform.
Check out the '350hp I30n'. Same car in Europe style
Lightweight rims and tires are only mods needed to have more fun with Vel N. It's sooooooo fun AS-IS.
Can't wait to see a comparison between this and the gr86.
Matt, I just bought the 2021 DCT version, I love your reviews and was wondering if you had any plans to review this latest model?
Everyone sleeps on Hyundai. But they are starting to change the game and make a stand!
true but in like 3 countrys that get the n cars
Hey Matt, should I bother trying to get a 2021-up Veloster N? They’re so hard to find (I want the stick shift) combined with the chip shortage and rough car market right now. Or just settle with a used 2020? I sat in the new 2021 seats and you’re right, they have a ton of lateral support but for a daily driver there’s barely any cushion on them…
How is the ride comfort of the N vs the R Spec?
Would the R Spec be the better choice for overall comfort and simple daily driving?
Curious why everyone compares this car to the type r. I really don’t think they’re in the same league. Focus st and wrx are fair competitors
I can't wait for this to depreciate just a little bit maybe to 25k and the after market to take hold this thing would be a rocket
gamersetc. You can get a new one for 25k
@@kingevanek sorry I meant with the performance pack, which is a necessity in my opinion 😂
some Aussie guy got the i30n (iam 99%) they have the same engine
he put an
upgraded turbo
a cai
and and downpipe
and an exuast with the a tune and got 360 whp
Lap3 tuning in SK already has got the car to around 400whp and like 380wtq
I think Type R is better too but Type R should have released with this sound. N sound is so much better.
It sounds so amazing in person, it surprised me!
In other markets, this car comes with full leather, power, heated and ventilated seats as well as a heated wheel. Shame Americans don't at least get the option.
Like the way it looks The Veloster come a long way
Matt how harsh is the suspension in comfort mode?
I had a Focus RS and had to get rid of it because of the super stiff/very harsh ride even in the softest setting.
How does the ride quality compare to the Type R?
@Tyler Wilson thanks Tyler.
Hey what's happening Matt I've bought the Hyundai veloster N instead of the Hyundai veloster turbocharged r spec instead 😮😢
Matt Maran Motoring love the video’s and thx for replying!
Why did Hyundai make the Veloster the N instead of the elantra hatchback like its i30 cousin?
Fantastic review!
It’s nice. Better than the si but falls short to be type rs competition
Thanks. Now I want it even more😩
Wait, the US doesn't get the Performance Pack?? The Straightpipes reviewed one that was fully loaded with ALL the bells and whistles
We get both the base N and the N with Performance Package. It's the only option on the US version of this car.
We get the Performance Pack, I talk about it in the video. We don't get the tech package that Canada gets, which has all the nicer features.
Also only 10k more subscribers and we get a launch montage video?!? Cant wait!
#letsturndownthisbackroadhere
Yep, new reaction compilation coming once the channel hits 400k!
I wanna see a 4 door sedan version
Hopefully we get that soon as they just released one in some European markets. My best guess would be that it will depend upon the success of the Veloster N.
Only problem is everyone that I know that has owned a hyundai (or Kia) myself included, has had infinite amounts of problems with them and they do not stand behind their factory warranty. I know of 2 personally that died at less than 100k miles, the genesis coupe and the tiburon. (both completely stock)
Todd Schnittjer the interior had a couple spot of wear already. Cheap quality.
@Rick James5678 I'm just sharing my experience with this brand and I've known enough owners to form my opinion but I'm glad your cars worked out for ya.
I thought the n has a rear strut brace in the trunk?
no idea how hyundai got away with that exhaust lol
Truth, I guess the same way that the Fiat abarth did
A hot hatch..with zero in it for $30k.
Replay on that intro , makes me smile with those pops
would you ever want to not have rev matcing on?
Depends on your foot and shoe IMHO and if you like heel-toe. If you have wider feet/shoes, it's a good pedal layout for heel-toe. If not, heel-toe is a bit more difficult to perform.
Completely based on your preferences, but it does feel very jarring when you know how to heel toe, and do it often.
The feeling is kind of like if one day your passenger decides to move the shift lever for you. It's "better" in that its less work for the driver, but over thousands of shifts, going against your muscle memory feels uncomfortable.
If it had leather and heated seats, I'd definitely trade my newer TTS for it.
Revvin the 417 this car should be the ultimate top spec Veloster. Shame it's less equipped than the Turbo.
Excellent review, Matt 👍🏻 Let me ask you something. For a father of two kids looking for a fun, yet practical hot hatch; would you recommend this over the Golf GTI?? As of right now I’m leaning heavily towards the GTI for its comfort and practicality, but man this Veloster N sure is making me think twice about my decision.
gti will be more practical for 2 kids. For 1 kid veloster all the way.
Elantra N will also be fully revealed soon- keep an eye out for that if you want a more practical N car. Also the Kona N if you’re interested
But the CTR is a light car while being more practical. In fact, the CTR has less than 100lbs in weight over the veloster n.
but doesnt sound nearly as good
@@maxdog421 sound is easy to fix. Weight and practicality are not.
Hopefully we can get that on the Elantra.
iluvcakes19 type r is outrageous styling and ugly ass rear end , even armytrix couldn’t fix the sound , good luck fixing that sound it’s gonna sound like a damn normal civic or corolla , N sounds better and type r is 37k
Keep your eye out for the Dual Clutch Veloster N they have photos and thats about it but the rumors of possibly having even more then just a automatic are rolling in.
Tech package & convenience package. *hint*hint*😉
This will be MINE !! In 5 years, Pre-Owned LOL :)
Resales excellent , in Australia only lost $1500usd in 1 yr , 4 yrs they will be $20000usd used
And you will still have 5yrs of warranty left 😆
@@dankim7031 True! Or better yet, pick up a used Focus RS ...
@@dankim7031 Second owners only get the 5 year 60k warranty. The 10 year 100k is only for the first owner.
Several questions... Anyone... please help me with answers... Thank you !
Can you buy and put a space saver spare tire in the trunk area?
Is this car as fun to drive as a Type R? (Nothing to do with speed Just the feeling)
Is this car comfortable enough to take on a 300 mile plus vacation trip?
Would you consider this car to be a more reliable car than the VW GTI or a BMW 230i in manual only?
Has anyone checked the real world mpg when not driving like a hooligan?
What color does anyone think looks best on this car?
Try to veloster N reddit or a facebook group. But generally the answer is yes. Chalk white or performance blue
Excellent reveiw
I came here to see Matt giggle. 14:32. Keep it up Matt!
11:43 Thank you Hyundai for giving the customer a place to store drugs.
mugensamurai i do that with my golf gti
