Stayed one month in Lasses home in Småland. We played all his compositions and made a gig in Malmö, I think it was in 1971. When I heard of his dead, I was very sad. I wish every day that he might step in through the door like in his prime. Gullin has never been surpassed.
Thank you, thank you! The GREAT Lars Gullin! Finally, someone has posted footage. Lars Gullin with strings! I know it doesn't get any better than this. A true giant of jazz, player and composer.
Fredrik Lundin: Thanks so much for posting the wonderful music of the great Lars Gullin. Cheers from New Orleans the city of jazz. A Chilean that love all "cultures". I love Lars performing with Chet Baker.
You're welcome. It's a treat reading peoples reactions to this, outside of Scandinavia, unsung hero. The way he treats that big, but actually quite fragile instrument, is just beyond beautiful. I myself is very much inspired by it. If you're interested in hearing that, you can check out the Danish jazz quintet Silhouette and the album Silhouette, where we pay tribute to Gullin. Also here on youtube the Song The Pond with the band 5 Go Adventuring Again.
I had the oportunity and luck to hear him in "East Park Jazzclub' and to play with him. He was a great inspiration and schould be regarded as one of the best Baritonsax Players in the world.
Joe Carbery Yes, isn't it ? To my mind the most beautiful bari-sound, period ! I wonder why so few have chose the sound approach of Mulligan and Gullin.
That is fine company. The unique Harry Carney sound is not to be copied. I play tenor mostly now (plenty of baritone, sop, alto once) and am lucky to get suggestions of tone like Ben, Flip, others, very satisfying. And, as you say correctly, "no wish...but me." Cheers.
Hej C Colliander.
What a shame! So many great diasporic European Jazz musicians are underexposed, or not at all. ( Inclusive of the great American Europeans too - the great ones... )
greetings from san francisco. a friend in stockholm turned me on to lars gullin a few years ago, with danny's dream. It came about because of the Sven Klang's Kvintett film, which someone put on youtube with french subtitles. Somehow the thread ran from Christer Boustedt to Lars. My thinking is that film continues to surface as the youtube finds more jazz afficionados. It becomes more global and sophisticated. QUESTION: if you have a copy of Sven Klang with english, OR french subs, could you upload it in a higher resolution? The french copy is at 240 and poor definition, but the subtitles are burned in, which is great. Better than not having it, but i am looking. Video people say it is unavailable. totally. But these things have a way of turning up. As for the art of Lars, the comments below have said more than i could ever. Such a sweet baritone sound, like an echo to Billberg's alto. Thanks for the time. For your reward, here's a short clip from our local glen park, san francisco friday night regular bookstore event: (hand held camera:) th-cam.com/video/MBd6Vjaga5w/w-d-xo.html
Greetings to you from Copenhagen. As for Sven Klangs Kvintett, I only have a Swedish DVD with no subtitles, and I guess that's not of interest to you, then. You'll be able to find more Gullin, that I've uploaded though. Also I've uploaded Gullin-songs done by our band, Silhouette. Cheers Fredrik
While studying with Lee Konitz in 1970... I showed up with a Bari Sax instead of my, Usual, alto.... He LOVED my sound on the Bari.... Whereupon he gave me a cassette tape of Mr. GULLIN.... TOTALLY Blew me Away!!!! ( PREVIOUS to that ... I , ONLY , was aware of Mr. Mulligan and Mr. Carney..)... Thank YOU, Mr. Konitz !!!
Awesome video you referred to, have just watched it. Nice to hear that Sven Klangs kvintett is known over there. I saw it when I was a teenager, and recently I watched it again, I am 62 now. I play tenor sax, and I very much like Danny's Dream.
@@BigParadox Must say that while Lars Gulin is known from the film, Danny's Dream was a suggestion from a friend in Stockholm. She says it's her favorite as well.
Nice and lyrical but not especially original - his ideas are falling somewhere between Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan, not that there's anything wrong with that.
It just blows my mind about the sound he got from his instrument!

Wow. Wish that was me. I totally agree, that no one has played the baritone as beautifully as he.
Thank you, thank you! The GREAT Lars Gullin! Finally, someone has posted footage. Lars Gullin with strings! I know it doesn't get any better than this. A true giant of jazz, player and composer.
So cool! Amazing! Love the playing of Gullin and Billberg!

Fantastisk.

Men jävlar vilken musik!
Just beautiful!! Love his first album on atlantic and the one with brew moore on fantasy. Thank you for posting!

Just wonderfull.
Fabulous bari solo.
Loved it

Wow!!...This guy was f****ng phenomenal!..How did I miss him???
Thanks for posting.
One of the best and you can always hear the melancholy in his playing. So swedish.
Fredrik - varmt tack för dina Lasse Gullin-klipp.
Underbart, tack
Incroyablement tendre baryton ! LARS!
Lars i våra hjärtan!
Pure beauty!❤
@MrSaxobari Yes, isn't it ? Great that it's reached all the way to Canada.

lysande, tack så mycket :)
yes, wonderful, isn't it ?
Have you seen the other Gullin-videos I've uploaded as well ?
Gorgeous tone!
Joe Carbery Yes, isn't it ? To my mind the most beautiful bari-sound, period ! I wonder why so few have chose the sound approach of Mulligan and Gullin.
You just can't sound like Carney or Mulligan, but you might with fate, luck, work, discipleship. Yet the Gullin sound is very lovely, fluid, clean.
Phil, I have no wish to sound like anyone else but me! But the three players whose tones I most enjoy are Gullin, Serge Chaloff and Joe Temperley.

@fredriklundin Where can we find more video of this excellent bariton sax player ?
One of the greatest saxophone players on bariton like Mulligan !!!!
yes, he is !
Very good documentary by Swedish television. Strange it's not possible to bye anywhere
Beautiful player, very underrated-influenced by Mulligan and Getz but his own man at the same time;loved it!

Yes, indeed :-)
Many great European Jazz albums were reissued in Japan. We should pay more attention to them. They are incredibly sophisticated!!!
As are the new issues :-)
Fantastisk

The Getz thing is deep within. Eddie Sauter's Focus, for instance.
Can music be more beutiful? Lars Gullin!
ABBA.... just a herring.
Very beautiful !.Who is the alto player ?
Rolf Billberg. Long time collaborater with Gullin.
Vad roligt klipp! Finns det mer fr den här dokumentären?

Fredrik, is there any way you can provide an English transcript or synopsis of what the other gentleman says about Gullin?
Hi Steven. I'll look into it during the weekend.
Hi Steven. I've now supplied a loose translation of what pianist and composer Nils Lindberg is saying. I put it in the information section above.
@@fredriklundin Thank you!

Tonen hörs i Chets spel m fl ♥️
