Damn good point. Reduced prices for fruit and veg in the UK, and the supermarkets lapped up the excess, only passing on 1% to the consumers. Subsidies are not the answer; regulating supermarkets' dodgy practices is

Two interesting responses illustrate how the market deals with controls and regulation. Why those speaking 'for the market' insist controls don't work. Some truth. Which may mean 'forget central planning, central coordination' of any market sector of an economy. The counterpoint to that is 'how did we all get into this mess' ?

People love getting free money from labour but don't want others getting it. The problem with New Zealand is not the labour government but the greed of many New Zealanders who no longer want to support and lift up all in society or take a long term view of environmental issues.

Indeed, they don't have the political courage to enact their most effective policies e.g. CGT on housing, or windfall tax on excessive profits in the power (even the right leaning Tories did this in the UK with their Energy Profits Levy!), banking and supermarket/grocery sectors. So instead they just put out the "feel good" policies that deliver bugger all for their constituents. Not to mention all the failed policies due to poor governance and accountability. I'm no fan of Hipkins, but he did answer the question about ram raids. He said they're trying to change the culture. What do you expect? Maybe after awhile it won't be cool anymore to film becuase the youth learn from their peers that it gets extra conditions put on them and they don't want that. Really...Tame can be a bulldog over the wrong points with the wrong people at the wrong time.

National can't even make a tax policy to save their skin, going all Boris Johnson and ignoring our trade agreements with our biggest trading parties, China and Australia, isn't exactly a safe move and neither is a coalition with ACT 'privatise our schools and hospitals' party. I've got no love for Lab but at least what they're promising isn't nearly as dangerous even if it isn't good enough.
We need better from both parties but that Nats don't have it: promising tax cuts they can't pay for during a global inflation crisis, that's a promise only someone desperate for power makes (especially when our own central bank engineered a recession to avoid an even larger one). Inflation is killing us right now, it takes all the funding from our schools and hospitals and police, our basic social services, their tax plan will only make it worse. Yes we need to help people who are struggling, the working and middle class, but tax cuts for the rich, for those with most properties, those best equipped to weather the storm, isn't the answer, especially when it comes at the cost of the essential services that make our country great over the long term, our children, our health, and our safety.
I won't tell you who to vote for but unless they change their tune real fast I couldn't vote for National or ACT this time around.

No-one wants to remember National has a record in power ? MMP Coalition 2008-17. With ACT, NZ First, Maori Party and Peter Dunne's Party. (Dunne the biggest windbag non-achiever in 4 decades in Parliament).
Nat Coalition for nine long years, gradually losing seats in Parliament till by 2014 Election John Key had a One-Seat working majority.
Then he resigned in Oct 2016. Becoming Chair of ANZ NZ. Someone you can blame for rents @ $600 week ? $32,000 year ! Bill English lost Parliament to 'Cindy' and 'Winnie'. Do you remember?
What are beefing about ? Don't you know about THE BIG SHORT, Michael Burry and the GFC Crash of 2008 ? The world economy could have crashed when Lehman Bros failed ...
PM John Key & MinFin Bill English put through savage cuts in public expenditure as the Nat-led Coalition raised GST TWICE from 10% to 15% to pay for tax cuts at the top.
A really good think before any EVER votes in National and ACT again ? Lesson: do your political narrative homework.

I'm not asking about your personal experience, in your jobs, your social circles, your little world - when has New Zealand not actually been a basket case for many people at a global level? Today everyone is scared of ram raids, Aussie gangs and high prices, yesterday everyone was scared of cigarette robberies at Night 'n Day and dairies, in the 2000s everyone was scared of wannabe Bloods and Crips youth gangs with machetes in Auckland, in the 90s we had a problem with white supremacy gangs in Christchurch. Should we talk about the economic overhauls of the 80s? The disputes between the crown and Maori that have been ongoing since the formation of this country and involved violence during the early days?
