    OK I'm going to be the one sliding into the comments about Dragon Quest's composer Koichi Sugiyama:
    He's a crazy right-winged nationalist nutcase and a *lot* of these problems are due to him. Like he, at one point, directly funded an ad campaign in US newspapers to deny that Japanese warcimes ever happened.
    Anyways, in terms of his music: he's so overly protective of his copyright of his songs that Disney would tell him to chill out. He's the reason why modern dragon quest games have a notice at the start saying that it's illegal for you to pause and listen to the music if you are streaming. He also refuses to let anyone riff off of his music in any way shape or form, leading to the... minimal song list over the series. It's fine when there's several years between games so it's kinda nostalgic when an old song pops up but _yeah_ it falls apart for an actual music game. DQ11's Japanese release was outright sabotaged by him, cause orchestral tracks were recorded, but only MIDI versions were included in the game cause he was worried that bundling the good versions would hurt CD sales. (Western releases came with the orchestral songs)
    There's other shit where he actively lobbied to make musical copyright in japan more strict but I'd have to look that shit up and I don't care enough for a youtube comment

      i am aware koichi sugiyama kind of sucked but I couldn't really think of a natural way to bring it up nor how precisely that related to Theatrhythm DQ's kinda weak song selection. I knew it had something to do with it but trying to figure out the copyright situation with DQ music kinda gave me a headache

    Actually, I think the absolutely final update unlocks everything.
    It *should*, anyway, unless some unlucky folks didn't update it.
    It would've given all characters, all tracks, characters at level 99, 999 of all items, and even unlocked Supreme from the start. I've actually played one of these at a Round 1, so I know that it should be like that.
    As for why the network was eventually shut down, it may be due to the reasons you mentioned, but Square Enix also shut down all their other network games like Dissidia AC, Gunslinger Stratos... Yeah.

    • @PunchyYT
      @PunchyYT  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      your round 1 is probably running a modification of some description (common and definitely exists) because as someone with the raw data that is absolutely not what happens with no network connection and no offline kit was ever released.

      @@PunchyYTI should be more specific and say that it was added as a "last update", so that's why I mentioned the unlucky folks thing.

    I am a long time Dragon Quest fan. But hearing that a rhythm game that exclusively uses music from those games, my first thought was this is going to be very boring. DQ's music can be good in context and with nostalgia. But it's very samey. Every game more or less carries the same timbre and sound. And often it's the writing of the games that props up the music as more memorable than it would be in its own.
