If you are looking to output from your iPhone or iPad to a TV or monitor via HDMI, then you will need the Apple Lightning to Digital AV cable.
This Lightning to HDMI adapter features a lightning connector and lightning port, so you can keep your iPhone or iPad charged, as well as an HDMI port which allows you to output your video from the iPad or iPhone to a TV or monitor with HDMI.
Things to keep in mind:
1. Each iOS device will output at a different native resolution and aspect ratio, so you won't always get complete full screen
2. The lightning port can only be used for charging, not for connecting other USB devies
3. There is a small delay between the iPad/iPhone screen and the TV/monitor

Hey Pete! That’s exactly how I mirror my iPhone to my computer for our live streams. I run the HDMI cable from the adapter and into an Elgato CamLink, then pull it into Streamlabs as a video source.

Thanks so much for addressing that question that I asked you about this adapter Pete. That makes my decision a little bit easier. So my other question would be since I know you use the reflector app to cast your iPad and iPhone to your computer, If your computer has an HDMI output to run that into a larger screen then I would think you could still use a microphone or an interface or other midi device using the USB 3 adapter.?? Gotta forgive me always trying to figure out a work around lol
Hmmmm.... good question. I think it would be possible to pass through the HDMI signal but the issue may be audio sync and lag, as Reflector already has lag and then you would get a little more lag from the HDMI.
I really wish they would make a docking station of sorts for iOS!
I would be interested to know if you can use the USB mic if you plug lightning power into the SECOND dongle? You demonstrated that it failed to fire up the USB input (mic) without power, but didn't prove that conclusively, without added power from a battery pack or wall-wart... Thanks though. I watched it all the way through at 1x speed!
Hey there. Yes, I have since tried many more tests with this and other dongles. The biggest issue seems to be that you can’t use the Lightning port on these for anything but power. Is that what you’re amazing about here specifically? Apologies if I’ve got it wrong!
Maybe from the apple usb3 camera, plug a powered multi usb hub with hdmi in. I'm pretty sure I've seen those. I'm going to hook everything up in one hub. What fun! Thanks!

Btw, I pass by the store earlier today ans unexpectaly saw a cable with the 3 pieces out (lightning, HDMI and USB) but when I asked, the other part, the 1 connection side of the cable was not for the Ipad (despite similar in size)
The shop tender told me what connection was but I forgot not being lightning and therefore not suitable for my needs

The cable you are talking about was likely a USB-C adapter as they have a lot more bandwidth and can handle more data flow.
Ok the plus side, once I get an HDMI capture device I’ll be able to start incorporating my screen in to my GarageBand live videos, just without an interface connected.

You got it, there may be adjustments on the monitor. I rarely use my iPhone with Garageband because it's much easier to work with on the iPad. This connector may present an alternative for some people. It doesn't seem like a very useful thing but it's all good. Fortnight on a big monitor using an iPhone as the input device? (I'm reaching here ; )

My biggest question (can't find the answer anywhere): will the sound go through my airpods? Or hdmi connection will mute the ipad as a sound source completely? Thanks!
Yeah. Unfortunately when you attach via HDMI it uses this as the audio output. I believe you can get a splitter for audio and video form HDMI but this won’t help much with wireless.

Hi, thanks for this video! I have an iPhone XR which I use to stream mobile games on twitch via this adapter and an Avermedia HDMI capture card and it works great except there are black bars all around the content. I understand this happens because of my iPhone’s aspect ratio not being 16:9 but is there a way to at least get rid of the left and right black bars? Maybe some kind of setting somewhere? Thanks

Good video, but I have a question.
Instead of plugging the HDMI into the input of a TV or monitor, could you plug it into the input of a HDD/DD/Set Top Box unit and record what the iPad shows.
Not for recording films or anything like that, I’m thinking purely games.
Anything that accepts an HDMI input will accept the signal. Only issue is that some games and apps block external display.
I have a ipad7gen and I use it to record my guitar in GarageBand or so on like Auria so here’s my question , is there anyway I can add a tv monitor for a larger view and my focuserite 2i2 3rd gen at the same time ??? I have a 4port 3.0 powered hub will that do the trick ???

Hi there. I haven’t found a way to do this with lightning based iPads. USB-C iPads can do this but the adapters for lightning based devices don’t work in my experience

Hey there. I believe so? Haven’t ever tried this with the camera app? I use MoviePro for this sort of thing as I can view my camera viewfinder on a second device.

So, I have no personal objection, especially given the premium cost of Apple’s products.
However, I just haven’t had much success. The adapters I have bought in the past either haven’t worked out of the box, worked sporadically, or worked at first but then stopped working after an iOS update.
So I tend to just pay the Apple tax now so that I get reliability.

Hey there. Any cable made recently should work fine. It does use HDCP encryption so make sure it supports that.

I am wondering if the 3.5mm jack still works while sending sound through the monitor? Thinking if I get a call while watching Netflix or something, that I can take the call without unplugging the adapter.
A good question... and one I haven't really tested? I believe once plugged in, the output for audio becomes the HDMI output, which I would imagine replaces the 3.5mm headphone output? Perhaps someone else has tested this.
Do you think that the lightning to hdmi adapter can have an additional adapter plugged into it? So that you can use hdmi and then maybe usb.
Hey there. In my experience this is not possible. The additional lightning port is for power only and I am yet to figure out a way to have multiple lightning devices connected to an iPhone or iPad at once.
Wonder if the apple double dongle would let you output through the hdmi and then in with the usb adaptor just an idea

Hey Paul. Thanks for your kind words my friend. Yes, I hadn’t really be playing with he adapter much at this point. Perhaps I need to record a part two and go through some more of the options like additional power for your device while playing.
Sadly that poet only provides power and not data transfer. Would be great to use an audio interface at the same time!

Hey there. So, Apple are a little uncool with this as they encrypt the signal so an HDMI capture device won’t see it. I was hoping to do his too and apparently there are some adapters that may get it to work, but none that I’ve been able findz
Yes! Yes you can! I use this with my Elgato HD 60 Pro (most capture cards have a mode that you can use HDMI phone capture but it will never capture Hulu, Netflix, or anything subscription streaming TV service) the only problems I run into is the .2 sec lag from the phone to the screen but its never crippling.

Do you still get audio from the headphone jack when the adapter is connected?
The audio output goes through the HDMI output on this device. I believe you can change it in the audio output settings but haven’t played around with it much.
Does this work for note-taking apps such as NOTABILITY? planning to buy and use it for my classes.

Could be DRM? Some apps won’t allow external screen playback.

I run audio out of my television into powered flat response monitors and it sounds find. Also change the aspect ratio of your television to get full screen. I only actually use the cable for mixing, virtual instruments and mastering because my eyesight is shit😆
Haha! Yeah, I could change the aspect ratio for the iPad to stretch that sucker but it does look a little odd then! I’ll keep experimenting though for sure and once I get an HDMI capture device it will be great for live streams.
Question, please: how do you connect audio??? I connected my phone to a bigger monitor (NOT TV monitor, regular monitor) but there is NO audio. How do you make this work?
It will default to the audio going through HdMI so if your display doesn’t have HDMI you may be a little out of luck.

That’s odd? Check your audio settings in the control center display.

There is an older one that convert yo VGA which is different. Make sure you get the genuine Apple version with HDMI if you want a reliable option.

What about audio latency? Would BLE midi work adequately just through the hdmi audio?
There is quite a bit of latency, so not really great for music production.

Yes. I’ve had a quick play with it. I can zoom or stretch the TV settings but can’t find any iOS settings for video output.
When I use this to watch Netflix or something on a big screen I try to us data due to bad internet but as soon as I plug in anything it automatically stops data from working, any solutions
Yup. Some apps will actually stop the video output. It’s a copyright thing.
The message I get on the iPhone 11 Pro Max screen:
Downloading accessory firmware. Your accessory will not function until the download completes.
After 20 times unplugging it and plugging it back in, I might get it to work. A slight bump, touch, or moving the phone at all and the connection drops.

Hey there. Depends more on what device you are using and ether it is sending an encoded signal. For most devices I have tried, a standard cable has worked fine.

Hey there. A admit that I don’t use it daily, but it is still in perfect condition a year later. The connections have a thick reinforced protector and the cable itself is thicker and much more durable than the flimsy standard lightning cables. If there’s an Apple store nearby ask if you can try one out there to see for yourself.
I have two of these. each died after 6 months. ordered a new one today since I depend on it to watch Prime and you tube in my rv and nothing else works

I’m pretty sure the audio will still go out the HDMI port unfortunately.
Unrelated pro tip: The best video size for new iPhones is 2:1. LumaFusion calls it “2:1 360 Mono” but it’ll be a normal video if you make sure to start project as 2:1 360 Mono but export as a normal video

Hello there my friend. So, if I'm understanding your question, you're asking about whether you can connect other USB devices, or just power to the HDMI adapter? Unfortunately the additional lightning port only provides power, but can be used either for an A/C power adapter or a portable battery.

Hi there. Unfortunately not. You can only connect a single data device via lightning at once, so once HDMI is connected, not other USB device like an audio interface or microphone can be used either.

Hi, I bought the lighting to HDMI adapter on amazon. Looks exactly like the apple certified one but I found out its third party. Is the cable you're using here the apple one? IS it as easy as plug and play? The one I got has instruction on installing a third party cast app but I'm not trusting it tbh. It should owrk automatically when plugged in, no settings need to be changed in your ipad or iphone, correct?

Yes, I’ve used it on a 720p and 1080i display and seems to work fine.
Would this work for the ipod nano ?
No, iPod Nanos use a 30 pin connection and not sure if they support video out.

I’ve been using this adapter for over a year now to watch movies from apple TV or websites and they appeared in full screen and everything was perfect, few days ago when i tried to watch a movie from the same website i always use its doesn’t turn to full screen i tried to play a movie from apple tv it says " cannot play movie the connected display is not authorized to play protected movies" they used to work before idk what happened now could someone plz help me ?!
That’s strange? It can be hit and miss with online video based on the copyright and protection. Sounds like you had been lucky before but either Apple or the website changed their details.

Might be a copy protection issue. It can be very hit and miss with different streaming and video playback services.
Here in 2021...has anyone figured out how to configure & play a midi keyboard on GB whilst connected to the big screen?
Unfortunately for Lightning based iPads and iPhone this is just not possible because the only HDMI adapters that work remove the ability to plug in any USB devices.

I believe so? I haven’t tested it specifically with Netflix so you may need to see if someone else has specifically tested this.
If I plug my hdmi plug into my DVD player and plug it into the MacBook to watch a movie. Would that work?
MacBook? No, you’d need a USB or thunderbolt adapter. The one is Lightning for iOS devices.

Can I stream online sport streams via safari browser without any issues?
Hey there. So much of that depends on the streaming service as many have DRM (digital rights management) systems that prevent many types of streaming. I haven’t had much success doing this personally.

Yeah. Just straight videos out of Safari should work okay.

Hey there. Yes, you can generally. Although some providers may have copy protection which may prevent some video streaming.

my iPhone 8 quit working with the Apple HDMI dongle after the OS 12.4 update. Have you experienced this issue? I’ve tried with 2 different dongles. Two different TV’s don’t even recognize that an HDMI device has been attached.
Hats a little strange? These are definitely genuine Apple products? I haven’t updated to 12.4 yet to be honest because I’ve heard of here sort of issues so waiting for the bugs to be ironed out. Hopefully someone else has some advice on this?
Yes, the iPhone 8 is not been jailbroken, and used to work fine with HDMI before 12.4. Maybe the 12.4 update changed something in Settings, and I need to go find a new software “switch” that says something like “enable HDMI output to ON” ?

Depending on the app, they might’ve restricting playback to larger screens. Unfortunately we have some sports here in Australia that do the same thing.

Hmmmm..... possibly? There are so many variables with different companies and different restrictions it’s really hard to say sorry. Only way to find out is to try it.

Not sure sorry? Maybe you’re using an app that isn’t allowed via hdmi? Netflix and others have this issue.

So here is why I want this device....use my IPAD to stream games from my awesome super computer upstairs to my huge 75" hdtv downstairs via steamlink. This way I don't have to move my computer downstairs when I have guests or when I am just too damned lazy to get off the couch.

It would be nice if the iPad and iPhone had at least two lightning ports, especially since they removed the headphone jack.
It is frustrating. Especially as you can connect multiple USB devices with a powered hub but not lightning devices.
Why is everyone showing this with their phones? I know they work more or less the same but it would be nice to see some more using ipads
Yeah not sure. I guess for me the iPad screen is generally big enough and when I want bigger screen size it’s usually from my iPhone?

Might be a resolution based issue. Different iPhones and iPads are not standard TV resolution.
