I’m 21 and work out very consistently, ever since finishing soccer in high school I’ve wanted to do some sort of competition again. I’m doing my first super this summer, pumped
Awesome!! Congrats on signing up for your first Super! You are going to kill it. Let us know if you can afterwards how it went. Good luck, be safe, and have fun!
Yes, we have two that we like and would recommend. Mack runs with DolfinPack - www.amazon.com/DolfinPack-Lightweight-Form-fitting-Waterproof-Hydration/dp/B011TUDOYI/ref=lp_10072636011_1_1?srs=10072636011&ie=UTF8&qid=1511809935&sr=8-1 and Damer runs with the Ultimate Direction hydration vest - www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Direction-Adventure-Hydration-Graphite/dp/B0141UJRFS/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1511809984&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=direction+hydration+vest&psc=1Both are great, and both have been tested over many trail runs, and used in actual OCR's. No problems with either.
Awesome! Good luck with all of your races, have fun and be safe. We were talking about the possibility of heading to Austin one of these days and getting out of the north east.
I see there is actually a race scheduled just outside of Dublin on May 27th, 2018. We'd actually like to head over there to check it out! There is a particular product made there which we quite enjoy...
OCR Kings ya it be a great weekend let me know if yer coming over. as if u are u should pre book a hotel with free cancellation as dublin prices will go through the roof. AND U AINT TASTED A GUINNESS TILL U COME TO IRELAND
Awesome - hell yeah!!! And yes, that's what I've heard, there's nothing like having one over there. In that case, Damer and I will have to have quite a few!!!
Great vid...you made it look effortless. But I know it wasn't. I am 59 y.o. , ready to do the super. I see some challenges for me, as may be for many, but any tips would appreciated. Multi ring, monkey bars, rope climb, twister.. I definetly will be working on upper body strenght . compiled with fact of small hand...any suggestions? I did see the multi ring you did one ring at time , not swing ring to ring with alternating arms.. Also regarding gloves, no gloves? Greatly appreciate it!
Thanks for watching! And yes, the video looks easier than it actually was. Still with a little prep, it wasn't too bad. First off the bat, I would have to say NO to gloves. I personally find the grip too artificial while wearing them. Also, when wet, I haven't found any glove that doesn't feel slippery while gripping wet metal (like monkey bars, etc). For monkey bars, ropes, and the climbing things, if you don't have access to practicing on them, pullups are a great alternative. Pullups train the same muscles used in those obstacles, plus you'll get some grip strength augmentation in there as well. For the rings, YES, I like doing one at a time, hand to hand. It's easier on my shoulders and I get a sure grip on each. Damer does do swing through however, because that works for him. That one is a matter of personal preference. As for Twister, that's a tough one. Twister is long and it is hard. There is no way to practice that one unless you have access to a Twister rig. As far as we have done, the most successful method seems to be facing the handles with your palms facing away from you, and advancing with arms fully extended. The arms fully extended take the biceps out of the equation, removing some of the muscle fatigue that Twister inflicts. A great example of this is in the 2018 Spartan Sprint video we did of Tuxedo NY. Last but not least (and we do this too), is to practice doing burpees. Throw burpees into your training regiment, so, in the case of missing an obstacle, it's no big deal if you find yourself doing some during the race. If you end up doing burpees, don't sweat it, you are in good company - we all do them at some point! Hope some of this helps. Have a great race, be safe and have fun! Also, check back in if you can and let us know how you did.
OCR Kings I am racing my first super this Saturday and I was curious about the barbed wire crawl. I noticed you rolling through some parts, is that advised for a new racer and why do you do that in the first place?
Great question! Z-walls are tough to train unless you have access to one. Most of it is grip strength for your hands and balance for your feet. If you don't have access to a z-wall, work pullups into your workout routine. They are great for grip and for working the same back muscles you will use in most of the obstacles like the rope climb, herc hoist, 8 foot wall, etc.
Looks tough. For a first timer would you say the super is an okay start? Or start with the sprint? I am very active with weightlifting and cardio 5-6 days a week.
You sound like you are super fit! You should have no problem with a Super then. Not a bad idea though to check out a Sprint as your first one. That's the route most people go.
So you dont recommend gloves on the obstacles? Your hands dont get torn up? Also i saw you recommended mustard for after the race, but what about before. What meals should i eat day of or day before, also should i get gels or anything for right before the race?
Great questions! Ok, as far as gloves, overall we don't recommend. Our hands don't get torn up, but we have some pretty decent calluses that help that palms. Mustard is ok before the race, and ok with the pre race meal. We only hit the mustard tho when we feel a cramp coming on, esp. in the calves. The day of the race, try to eat something you've eaten before running in the past. You don't want any surprises on race day, esp. one that sends you running for the bathroom. Bagels are popular, but we usually have a clif bar or two. The night before the race varies. I usually eat turkey sandwiches with no cheese and no condiments. Not sure what Damer eats. Two nights before is usually our big carb meal (pasta). Gels are a good choice for during the race. I usually have a couple of those on hand, and plan to take one around every two miles or so. Neither of us take anything right before the race or in the starting area. Maybe that's just jitters, but we tend to wait until were a mile or two in before we consider consuming something. Usually just breakfast before the race, 300-500 calories, 3 hours or so before go time. You know your body best, however, so adjust to your needs. Hope this helps! Mack
Is it okay to go straight super for a first timer? In terms of cardio, i think I can do fairly well. Just ran 10k with 1 hour and 10 minutes and wasn't that exhausted. I felt I could run another 5k. But in terms of upper body strength, I can't hang on monkey bars yet.
@@OCRKings sprint slots got sold out. went for super with only a week to go. Legs are no problem. Cant wait for next year's race so im still going. Ill test my determination and stamina. I dont mind if ill be the last one to finish. but im gonna train really hard for 2019. Thanks OCR kings!
Good question. It depends on the weather and the length of the race. If it's a cold weather one, regardless of the length, we'd pack gloves. We wouldn't recommend wearing them during the obstacles tho, take them off then and put them back on to keep your hands warm while running. If it's a warm weather event, we'd leave the gloves at home. You know your hydration needs batter than anyone. If you need water while you run, bring a camelbak. We don't use those for Sprints or anything less than 5 miles. For Supers and Beasts, we'd be wearing a hydration system. Spartan is pretty good tho at providing water. I always wear compression pants (tights) in both hot and cold weather. Damer wears them under shorts only when it's cold. He goes with just shorts in the hot weather. That's a matter of preference. I like the compression and the extra knee coverage. For the longer races, some nutrition is also recommended. There are plenty of options, but some of our favs are gels, stinger waffles, salt tabs, and mustard packets (to ward off cramps). Hope this helps!
OCR Kings mustard packets?? Interesting! We are racing in Diablo Grande, CA and the weather is expected to be 65 and cloudy with a chance of rain. If you’re saying that Spartan does a good job at supplying water, I’ll leave my hydration pack at home. Maybe I’ll bring a pair of thin gloves (similar to Mechanix work gloves). If I can find some cheap leggings, I’ll bring those as well. For the shoes, regular running shoes (I was thinking Nike Free Run since they are breathable) with long socks should be fine right?
Yes, and unfortunately it seems only to work with the gross yellow mustard packets only. It would be nice if brown mustard or Grey Poupon or something worked too, but sadly only the kind we hate does the trick. We usually grab some at Target or 7-11. If you're doing a Sprint, yeah, you might consider leaving the camelbak at home. You know your hydration needs tho, so pack accordingly. If you need more water during workouts, you could always bring the camelbak and dump it out if you find it to be unnecessary. There is also no rule that says you must keep it on during the obstacles. You could always take it off, put it to the side, and come back for it once you complete the obstacle. Mechanix should work well. For the leggings we usually go with Under Armour. I use the compression run tights with no shorts, Damer uses regular ones with shorts on top. As for shoes, that's a tough one. We have been having the worst time finding the perfect shoe. Maybe they aren't out there at all. at any rate, yes anything that is breathable, has a good grip (esp. when wet), and is going to stay on your feet once you go into the water and thick mud. I would recommend long socks, yes. By that I mean not like anklet socks. Mid calf is a good height. Also synthetic, not cotton since cotton socks will soak up tons of water and mud, and will get real heavy really fast.
Definitely Twister, and absolutely when it's three sections long (as opposed to 2 in the shorter races). The multi-rig is one of our favs. We built one out back, and it has become just pure fun for us. The bucket carry is up there for difficulty/monotony depending on how it's laid out, and the Herc Hoist in "Beast Mode" where they add extra weight is pretty tough when it's at the end of the course.
It’s a Mechanixwear M-Pact glove. They are an older pair I got from home depot 5+ years ago. I like those more because they were short around the wrist so it didn’t interfere with our watches. The new pairs (which I also own a pair) are nicer feeling but a little longer where it meets the wrist. Not a problem - just used to turn off my watch activity during races - now my watches have lock screens so it doesn’t matter anymore. Either would work. Hope this helps, Damer.
can anyone tell me the difference between spartan sprint, super and beast? I have to do a work on it but they all seem the same. is it only the distance and nr of obstacles that vary? Thanks in advance!
