I'm massively nervous lol. I have a Sprint on May 21st. I was 300lbs and I've gotten down to 250 since October and I've set the Sprint as my first fitness goal. Rope climb and maybe the rings might equal burpees for me. The rest looks manageable. Thanks for the video this was awesome!!!
Nervous is good, that's that adrenalin feeling. I get that nervous feeling every time I get to the course/mountain. It's one of the things I love about the whole ocr thing. Now, first, way to go on losing 50 lbs! Awesome job! As far as the rope goes, check out some videos about climbing ropes using the "Russian wrap" technique. In short, you wrap (drape) the bottom end of the rope over one foot, and then pinch it with the other foot. This allows you to kind of stand on the rope and takes the weight off your arms. You then do a sort of "inch worm" move, where you hold on with your hands, and bring your legs upward. You then pinch the rope with the feet full force allowing you to move your hands up. Repeat til you get to the top. This way you're not using all arms and shoulders. With the rings, grab a ring and support with your strong arm in the back. Reach out with your other hand and grab the next ring, then bring your strong hand to the same ring (the "hand to hand" technique, check out our video on the Spartan Rig). It is slower than swinging from ring to ring, but is way safer and less taxing on the arms. If there's a pipe in the configuration, do the same thing by supporting with your strong arm in the back, slide out the other hand, then bring your strong hand fwd to the front hand (again see our Rig video). Regardless, give it your best shot. If it doesn't work out, DON'T SWEAT IT. Do your burpees, I guarantee you will be in good company. We all do them at some point. As long as you put out and give it your best effort, that's all that matters. Have a great race! Let us know how you did.
Lars van Koningsveld it went well. It rained all day so the course was a mess but I had a blast. I'm registered for the Super in September in Michigan.
Hopefully we will all be able to get back to the Races, and coronavirus will have subsided by then. Keep an eye on your email and the Spartan website for announcements. Races so far well into April have been postponed. Hopefully we can return to normality soon. Until then, be well, be safe.
Thanks for uploading this! This was me and my son's first Spartan Sprint! I just uploaded our 2 minute video as well! But we didn't have GoPros during the race, so it's a composition from the videos and pictures of our family :)
Aroo! Good seeing you out there too! Yes sir, that was me on your six there at the end of the race and some spots in between. I think you might be in quite a bit of the unedited video.
The hardest ones for me would be the rock bucket, sand bag, and lifting a bag over a pulley. I guess I will have to focus on strengthening more than endurance when I train.
Excellent, good luck and have a great race! Take your time with the spear throw. Go to a target where someone already hit and stuck the spear (this way you know it can be done there, you've just seen it). Make sure you keep the rope IN FRONT of the fence, give it some slack, and make sure you don't step on it. If the point is bent, feel free to bang it on the rail of the fence to straighten it out. If you don't like the spear or the target, choose another lane. And in the end, don't worry, if you make it GREAT, if not everybody misses (including us) so you'll be in good company! Lastly, check back and let us know how you did.
I'm nervous as well! Just did the tough mudder and can't get enough! I'm 5'2 very physically fit but upper body strength could always use more work! Here's to more training haha please let me know if you have anymore tips as it's in two weeks 😱
Awesome! No need to be nervous, you'll do great! Always play to your strengths, so if you're uncertain about upper body, use your legs for support or to boost up/onto/over (for ropes, and walls esp). Any obstacles in particular you are concerned with? Hit us up.
It's coming to Greece in November and it will be in Sparta where I am from and I wish I can go but even the sprint open category which is the simple one is expensive! Hope I can afford to go
Abe Allen There are a couple of approaches to climbing the rope. I like using just my hands (no feet) and rely on grip strength to power right up there. Damer likes the "Russian wrap" technique (lots of tutorials out there) where you pinch the rope between the feet and sort of inchworm your way up there. My technique is faster, his allows you to use your legs and gives your arms a break. Either way, legit pullups are the way to go to build up strength if you don't have a climbing rope to practice with. Good luck on your race, let us know how you do!
OCR Kings awesome thank you, I'm a water polo player/swimmer so I may try to just muscle my way up. I've got to do some training on that for sure. I'll definitely be back after I race and let y'all know how it goes!
I'm currently 235 pounds 6'2" probably 16-20% body fat, I'm eating clean and working my way to 195 pounds. I'm currently on my 4th week of weight and cardio training 5-6 days a week and me and my 2 training partners are planning on doing a tough mudder an this we live in Canada Yukon territory anytips on what we should be doing?
Ok, on the monkey bars, it's not a bad idea to do one at a time, meaning hold onto one bar with both hands and reach out to the next with one arm, then bring the supporting arm in back forward to the same bar (we call this the hand to hand method). Same thing for the multi rig. We have a decent video on our technique there. th-cam.com/video/tRsfHbTSRlU/w-d-xo.html On the spear throw, pick one that is already sticking into a target (that way you know that spear is capable of sticking in). Make sure the rope is over the gate so you don't step on it or get hung up on it by accident. Grab the spear about a third of the way back from the point. Stick the non throwing arm out in the direction of the target to help aim. Aim for center mass from the sides, and for the highest bail in the stack (to account for any drop in the spear while it's in the air). Take a deep breath, relax, and throw. Good luck, and have a great race!
sssinfullyyours On the actual course map from spartan, they literally label that particular obstacle(s) as "Classified" - they don't give them another more descriptive name.
Here is the title of the song (it's a long one): "Confident And Determined Cinematic Hip Hop (Rap) With Groovy Beats" by NeoCortex. Good luck at your race!
So is this is men's elite course? because i wanted to start a team for the may 21st sprint and we have some girls with us. I'm not sure they'll fair very well on a course like this. Looks like this requires a lot of upper body strength
You are too kind! To do a Spartan Sprint (4-5 miles), you could run once a week if you have a long time before your race. If not, 2 times a week if you have access to hills and trails. If you are going to use an elliptical machine, 2-3 times a week max.
When filming with the GoPro's, do you guys film the entire duration of the race or do you stop, then restart the recording when you come upon an obstacle? Starting this year to film my own and was wondering the best way. Thanks!
Great question. Damer usually punches in and out. He starts to record right before the stepping up to the obstacle. I tend to just record the whole race. Punching in and out makes editing WAY easier. Recording the whole thing ensures your don't miss anything. If you have the battery power, the disk space, and the patience to sift through everything later, then I say record the whole thing. If not, punch in and out just don't forget to hit that button at the right time(s)!
OCR Kings thank you. My friend and I are going this year, and we've just been trying to figure out what to expect. She went in 2013 and it was 4.5 miles.
Great - have a great race! Here are the exact stats from the Garmin: 4.90 miles, elevation gain 1,602 feet, elevation loss 1,550 feet, min elevation 794 feet, max elevation 1,173 feet.
Sorry didn't mean to make you nervous. You'll be FINE! Remember, almost half that data is DOWNHILL. That's no sweat. Take your time going up the hills, WALK up them. You go up a big hill right at the beginning. Lot's of people charge out of the gate - let them go. Most of them will be smoked before they get to the top. Take your time, set your own pace, and chill. Hydrate, and take breaks when needed. The best part too is that you're doing it with a friend. Support each other and just have fun. You'll do great!
fuze59 We both use this mount from gopro GoPro Headstrap Mount + Quick Clip (GoPro Official Mount) www.amazon.com/dp/B00F19PYR4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Q2kCzbZXV1064
fuze59 We tried the chest rig but ran into problems when crawling through mud (the lens got covered immediately), and when climbing stuff (esp ropes since the rope and your hands get in the way and you can't see anything). The head rig stays on pretty well, and once you have it on for a minute or two you hardly notice it.
I'm glad I watch these it's amazing to relive all the great and Terrible times
Ha! Yes, terrible, hot, muddy, and FUN!

Good to hear! Have fun in september!
Gerald Lazanis Excellent! Have a great time at your Super as well!
So funny, someone just sent me this link because she recognized it was me giving you your medal. Awesome job!
Trish Chillemi No way!! That's pretty awesome! Hope to see you there this year :-)
My family and I signed up for the sprint on September 20 at Whistler. Time to go to work!💪💪💪 This video is really helpful. Thanks!

Yes, those are hard, especially the carries since they are heavy and you have to lug the items up hills. Strength training definitely helps!
I’m running my first Spartan Sprint on May 20th, I’m super excited. I’m just nervous for that spear throw lol
