I lived in Muswell Hill for a few years approximately 10 years ago. I had Toffs quite a few times and it was always exceptionally good. Glad you visited my old stomping ground Gary 👌👌
What I love about Gary's videos is the fact that I always feel that they are around 30 minutes yet in reality seem to be, on average, around 12-15 minutes. I think this is the sign of a great TH-camr i.e fill you content with what people have turned in for.
I've eaten there many times, but about 35 years ago in a previous life! Looks as i remember it, even the way its served with a salad garnish. Food was always first class. Brought back memories. Thanks, another great vlog.
I've heard so many good things about Toffs & your visit has done nothing to dispel those views. Excellent vibe in the place & very friendly/attentive staff makes your experience even more enjoyable. Sticky toffee pudding is one of my favourites & their pudding is top drawer. Quality + Lucky you Gary.
My Scottish friend once set a dish of sticky toffee pudding in front of me and another friend and said "I made this yesterday. Have some if you like." My friend and I proceeded to eat the entire leftover pudding bite by bite. First time I had ever had it, and I was in heaven. With custard? Oh I can't even imagine how that must be. Looks amazing. Glad you had dessert today.
After seeing the name TOFF’S, I thought you were in the wrong place. But not so. The meal looked delicious….I enjoy watching your expressions Gary. Sometimes words are not needed. Thanks again for another wonderful review.
This brought back so many memories of living in Muswell Hill 2000 - 2008. I used to go to Toffs every 3-4 weeks and it looks like it's barely changed. So pleased you did this one Gary. A well deserved good review.
Now that's proper good. Finally a London one that matches what towns on the coast do (not always though there are still bad places). The chippy just along from me simply don't open if they can't get the very freshest haddock, they even stayed closed because the potatoes weren't up to scratch once (in Angus, which is potato central. Just down the coast from fish central).
Gary. As a Yorkshire lad Whitby is the home of fish and chips. My top three are 1. Fisherman’s Wife 2. Magpie 3.Trenches In this order. The view from the tables at the fisherman’s wife are world class. All I can say is “give it a go”
I'm not sure that a salad garish belongs on a plate of fish and chips! But the addition of bread and butter was a good touch... gotta have a chip butty! Great review as ever!
@MonkeyMagic10 That's London. My Dad's side of the family come from there too. He moved to the midlands as the wages didn't match the prices even back in the 60's.
Gary, totally agree, as someone who grew up in Barnet and still works in Haringey, spot on. I don't mind paying, if the food is quality. Top review, ta very much.
Enjoyed the video Gary, but boy so expensive. Mushy Peas £4.50 !!!!! Whit. My standard Fish supper is £7.50 locally. Thanks again for taking the time to do this. Love the video's.
@@GaryEats My favourite fish & chips restaurant is Steels Cornerhouse in Cleethorpes. £15.45 for jumbo haddock, chips, peas, bread & butter and a pot of tea. My old mum has been going there since the early 1960s and if you can't trust your mum, who can you ? Papas are also pretty good. They have restaurants across the north including Blackpool and one in Cleethorpes which is the worlds biggest fish and chip restaurant on the pier.
Hi Gary, I’ve been following you for the last 3 months and have watched every video you have uploaded! This has been my favourite so far! The humour really tickled me and I believe you must be the most wholesome TH-camr… the only advice, don’t go changing!
When in Whitby we always try and get in The Magpie Cafe, some dont rate it, but we reckon its superb Gary. And lots of choices of fish dishes, not just Fish and chips. Warning, theres nearly always a queue outside, but if you get there in plenty of time you will be fine. Another good place to eat and i recommend the Seafood Linguine especially, is The Marine which is just down from the Magpie, again they did do a lunchtime special menu with Fish and chips on it. If you can get down to Sandsend, about two miles north, there is a pub called The Hart Inn, and we always aim to go. The food is superb, its always busy whatever the season. The beach hut over the road is great too, crab sandwiches a speciality. Enjoy, its a lovely place.
Thank you, Gary, it's worth a look. One thing that you might add is the amount that you tipped, or didn't. It would be interesting to learn what the tipping expectation is these days, and where.
Ah, Toffs! They've been going for decades. I grew up around there. Still remember first dates - bag of chips, battered sausage and scraps with a pack of beers, watching the sun set atop Alexandra Palace. Sad to hear the owner passed away during the pandemic.
Another great review! Particularly loved the B&B side dish :) I'm a 'skin on' punter. Seeing the plethora of Northern Hemisphere fish on the menu left me feeling very nostalgic! Where I live we have some great fish... Coral Trout, Snapper and Red Emperor are excellent in a fish and chip 'setting', but I long to taste the battered Plaice my mum would share with me :) Thank you.
Yes that fish looked pretty perfect Gary, I like the skin on. I would recommend Robinsons fish shop in Whitby, the Magpie is ok but there's usually a massive queue!
Gary - absolutely love your videos. Best fish and chips are in the north West of Scotland - Ullapool, and the hotel in Shieldaig. But a bit of a drive! Check out Anstruther as well - maybe not the obvious chip shop, but the wee chippy round the corner. Keep up the good work!
I had fish and chips at ‘ Toffs ‘ in around 2005 !! I had skate and chips I remember first time I had skate ! it was the best then and to hear you say it’s London’s number 1 comes as no surprise .. very nostalgic to see you here .. amazing !! it hasn’t changed much in almost 20 years !! 👌👌👌👌👌
You wouldn’t believe this Gary but a friend who was recently visiting London all the way from Canada actually went to this place, out of all the restaurants he could have chosen from. I just told him I was watching your review and he was really surprised and delighted. I am so glad that you enjoyed it as much as he did. I must say those mushy peas looked excellent. And the pudding looked so delicious. I also highly recommend my local fish and chips restaurant in Greenford-Traditional Fish and Chips-just in case you wish to try another such restaurant in London. I absolutely love them. Excellent review as always!
Definitely the Magpie in Whitby, you wont be disappointed 👍 As well as fantastic fish and chips i recommend the Muscles and Fries which was only about £10 when i went there last a few years back
I think he said he wanted 3 F&C restaurant recommendations in Whitby and you've given a great one here. I live about 25 mins drive from Whitby and visit a lot. I've added to this Magpie recommendation in an earlier reply to Gary with Trenchers (a must) and one of either Mr Chips, Quayside Fisheries, The Fisherman's Wife and Hadley's.
That was a superb review Gary. Environment and service first class, beautiful haddock in batter and the chips looked great and the mushy peas. The sticky toffee pudding and custard was lovely. Thought that was excellent value for money, considering London prices. Your rating was spot on and many thanks for sharing with us. Enjoyed your presentation. Take care and see you soon 👍👍👍
Really look forward to these videos Gary. Keep up the good work. The flow and speed of each video is just right and your down to earth, considered approach is brilliant
Haha gave me a morning laugh out loud - love the channel and love how honest Gary is with his review - not afraid to go low when it’s not good 👍🏻 respect
Always good to see you get so excited about your food! Made me feel hungry again. Looked a great plate of food and the pudding, naughty but nice. Hope you jogged to the bus stop Gary! 😂xx
This looks like a delightful place to go for lunch, thank you for sharing. Really great energy in this video, it was clear you were enjoying yourself. Although you saying this is the first time you've had a pudding on the channel got my Gary Eats trivia whirring - you definitely had a Christmas pudding at Ye Olde Fighting Cocks! That sticky toffee pudding looked incredible though and makes me wish I had a bowl with me now. All the best to you Gary and Cameraman and congratulations on 50,000 subscribers, much deserved!
Another great and honest review your definitely the best food reviewer I've found on TH-cam and it reflects with the subscribers you have got I'm sure the 50k will be reached in the next few days. Keep up the excellent work Gary.
YES Gary, glad to see you enjoyed Toff’s. I live in Highgate and find myself at Muswell Hill once or twice a week. I’ve eaten here a few times and enjoyed it. Not sure if you mentioned it but they have a lunchtime offer for approx £12. Good value. However, at the end of that street there is an exceptionally good Wetherspoons; The Mossy Well. I work in hospitality but never on Mondays. That’s always my day off and I can often be found there on a Monday lunchtime enjoying a fish and chips and a great pint of real ale for £8.64. Bear in mind that not all spoons are as decent as this one. However, I intend to have lunch at Toff’s soon- the quality is of course better. A few pints after to follow, of course. Cheers!
Ahh Gary Toffs is a splendid place to eat ive eaten there three times when ive been in North London over the years was recommended by my good friend Glenda Collins(1960's Joe Meek artistes) who i was with at the time who used it regular we had also been to Pizza Express close by but that was run of the mill place nothing outstanding. Marc In Bletchley
Dear Chap. First off, I really enjoy your beautifully balanced reviews. Next on the list: I seem to remember you saying you enjoy Thai food. I'd like to suggest a place in West London, called Esarn Kheaw. It doesn't look much from the outside, but it's got an awful lot to offer. Personally, I think you'll enjoy it. Keep going - the channel is fantastic!
As a lover of fish and chips, this restaurant looked like it was very good. A good selection on the menu and I think a fair price overall although I did think the mushy peas were a little on the expensive side but it's difficult to judge portions sometimes in a video. I totally agree with your marking and it's good to see you sampling Haddock for a change. Well done for hitting over 50,000 subscribers. Every time I come here I see your channel constantly growing, you must be very proud to have got to this stage so quickly. Cheers
Hi gary great review .that fish looked good i will have chippy lunch today after watching this👍.. in Whitby there's on one place i go and it's called Mr Chips lovely food cheers.
This is one of my wife's favourite places for fish and chips in London. But as you know, I can't eat fish, so I usually go to the pub and enjoy a couple of pints and some bangers and mash. In Whitby, The Magpie is number one, Trenches second and Royal Fisheries in third, all according to the wife and not me. But remember to order it with mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy, when your up in Whitby. Another fantastic review, mate and soon 50K, should celebrate that with a visit to The Ritz and a have a breakfast there. 🙂 Have an absolutely wonderful weekend and relax, Gary! BTW, did you see my last email, buddy, as I haven't heard anything back, mate! 😊
Yep, Trenchers and Magpie seem to be the most popular and then had a few votes for other places. I'll make the decision on that one! Take care mate and I would love to do that video but I'm too fearful of my comment section!! I still haven't received anything mate but please message contact@garyeats.com from now on. Have a good weekend Frank!
Trencher's, right on the harbour front, sort of opposite the station. Beautiful fish and chips. There is a board in the shop, tells you which boat each kind of fish has came off, that day.
That you bother to seek out the very best places, WHEREVER they are, Gary. This little gem was no exception. That fish and chips looked lovely. I knew it was good because i could see you salivating when you picked up your knife and fork to begin... ( You and me both!) The batter looked to me like it was as cooked perfectly. It didnt stick like glue to the fish. It was crisp, fresh and there was no oiliness at all wgen you turned ithe bottom of it over. The fish looked succulent , moist and meaty . Pudding was a class act . The colour and consistency of thar custard..... And tgey wat tgey did tge contrasting stripes of custard drizzled over the sponge. You take these food reviews to another level, Gary. There is nothing banal about your videos. Great food doesnt hace to be the most expensive food. This place looked special and that made the video very valuable. Thank you.
Thank you Russ. A superb little place but in all honesty, I'd had so many recommendations that I can't claim this one. Really appreciate your kind words.
Hi Gary. Enjoyed your great, honest post as always. Surprised they didn't call it Sticky 'Toff's' Pudding. Disappointed that you didn't don a top hat before entering while walking with a cane 😂. If a chip shop fish is watery, it usually means it was frozen. That one looked tasty. Atmosphere looked ace. The butter on the bread did look a tad like margerine, but it was probably just the lighting. I always have to make a chip butty with b&b as well. Just had F&C's myself; after seeing your sticky toff pud, I had to dig out an old Xmas Pud left from Christmas and scoff it! Don't know anywhere in Whitby other than The Magpie. The queues outside are like the Great Wall Of China. It's fame comes largely from the fact that the late food critic A.A.Gill recommended it, and he was notorious for his restaurant hatchet-jobs as I'm sure you know. All the best, pal. Keep it up 👍.
I’d forgotten that A A Gill had endorsed the Magpie. Michael Winner was a regular there and said that they cooked the best fish and chips anywhere. Rick Stein asked for a lesson in cooking fish and chips as he was so impressed when he visited.
Well with a place called Toff's you had to have the pud! It looked very good, not much more can be said! Almost 50,000 subs and only been on youtube just over six months, keep them coming Gary!
Great review Gary, many thanks. Grilled Dover Sole and boiled potatoes for me as I really like it and you rarely see it on menus these due to the price. As a Yorkshireman, I have to say you may find the Magpie Cafe in Whitby a bit of a tourist trap and there are usually long queues, so try and book. You can’t book in school holidays. I have also heard mixed reviews recently, but mainly about the take away. Personally I recommend TRENCHERS opposite the railway station. Large place so no queue and really good quality. They do a lovely combo dish of battered cod/haddock goujons with battered jumbo king prawns - delicious ! I’d say it will be as good as Murgatroyds. Go on…..give it a go 🤣 👍
Another good review. I have never had greenery(salad) with fish and chips. It was pricey, but it is London. I like skin on the fish so that was a bonus. Up in Yorkshire, if in a chippy restaurant, we usually get Tea and bread and butter with our fish and chips, and I love to make a chip butty! For best results, there has to be plenty of butter on the bread so the chips can melt it, just fab!
Toffs was winning awards thirty years ago when I used to go there. Never ate inside. For me fish n chips is all about the take away experience. Eating with your fingers out of a paper wrapping. Vinegar dripping out of the bottom onto your new shoes. Getting stuck into a nice Saveloy. No mushy peas. None of that Northern muck, lol. Great to see Toffs maintaining their high standards. Good enough to get a 9/10 from Mister Eats. Thank you and be lucky.
My mouth was watering at the fish. Looked lovely . Little touches like the bread , nice big portion of chips etc, goes a long way. And that's my favourite pudding for afters. Wow indeed. Look forward to your videos Gary all the time 👍
Great video! I’ve watched you for months now and you never fail to entertain and inform! I absolutely loved Quayside Restaurant when I travelled to Whitby. As a vegetarian, I really appreciated how they catered to every type of dietary requirement. I had a battered sausage for the first time in years. My partner loved the fish and chips, it was also the quickest to be served and very cost friendly compared to some of the other restaurants. Keep up the great content!
Hi Gary and M Cameraman. Looks like you found a good place here that serves up a good sized portion. Only thing im not personally fussed on is Salad with fish and chips, the bit of lemon is fine but no thanks to the rest. Great to here your coming up my neck of the woods to Whitby in North Yorkshire, to which palace1439 is bang on the money its Trenches, Magpie cafe and Royal Fisheries for me also, you may need to queue for the Magpie though as its very popular indeed, but there happy for people to film. Chris.
All right Gary. Never been to Toff's but seems it is a nice place and the food itself is really worth to try. The prices are ok for such quality and that dessert was awsome. Come on, let's give it to the next one.😊
Damn you Gary! You've made me crave my favourite meal with this upload haha! It is Fish Friday to be fair so I'll let you off this time 😂 3 Venues in Whitby for Fish & Chips?? I must admit I visited Whitby last year while staying at Scarborough and I loved absolutely everything about it and am actually coming back to Whitby in a few weeks time in early March and I'll be staying at Whitby this time which I reckon will enhance the next experience and make it even better, my personal recommendations for Fish & Chips in Whitby? Now while I tried only 2 of them, the 2 I did try were Magpie's Cafe which by the way was outstanding and very very busy as had to queue outside beforehand, the other one? I went to Trenchers and I must say they were just as good if not only just slightly better, I found the staff at Trenchers to be more friendly and more attentive, now, this is not to say Magpie's was bad because it most definitely wasn't, it was just that it was so busy the staff were all over the place doing multiple things so I'll let them off for that. Very expensive both were that was the only downside to it however in light of the current times combined with other factors, as you said at the end of the video, sometimes, just sometimes you have to pay that little bit more, and as the saying goes? You get what you pay for. If there was a 3rd venue I could think of? Despite not trying them the first few that come to mind would be Mister Chips or The Fisherman's Wife? However to be honest with you this might be something that the locals of Whitby and surrounding areas will know the answer to better than us haha. I might try them next time myself however 🙂 Hope you enjoy Whitby though man, it truly is one of my favourite venues to visit nowadays and am so glad that have discovered it. P.S Hope you enjoyed the match man the other day? What a result! and What a performance! I don't know if you'd be interested however I have an Instagram page where I upload most of my Matchday Shenanigans, it's called TheKopBaltic and I mention in detail about each match where I can 😀 Additional P.S, Don't stop making Fish & Chips videos in London! :D It's your channel mate and it's upto you what you would like to upload! Besides, there are most likely a fair few hidden gems out there that we don't know about! 😅Let's Find Them!
@@GaryEats I found the other place in Whitby I was thinking about and wanted to recommend. The 3rd one I would probably go for and would like to try myself is called Royal Fisheries and it seems highly recommended on Google, so that's my personal 3 recommendations for you 😊 Magpie's, Trenchers and Royal Fisheries, definitely ask the locals though just incase! They'll know some Hidden Gems. Chris
You looked so happy with everything. They even put a bit of mixed salad on the side of the plate. An important touch. Portions were excellent. All in all, very unHarrods. Your romantic lunch with your cameraman was clearly well timed for an early Valentine's outing..... Hahahaha. Thank you again for the enjoyable video. As always, it is much appreciated!
Thank you for being the BEST You Tube food channel as always and congrats on 50K too !!! Loved the review and really look forward to the Whitby series.
Oh happy days, my favourite food, fish, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a cup of tea, haddock the Scots favourite fish. Oh jeez Gary this is sublime food, chip sandwich, the joy goes on and on. Your face is radiant. Sticky toffee pudding, how delicious that looks. Have to say this is one of my favourite reviews. Great price.
I lived in Muswell Hill as a student in the early 70s and can’t remember racing back from Hornsey College of Art for a plate like that. Remember some nice pubs though. Looks delicious! Two things go well with a nice cup of tea : one is beans on toast and the other has to be fish and chips.
Looked like a quite traditional place, and all the food looked lovely. One reservation though, salad... For me, salad has no place on a plate of fish and chips :)
Gary, great videos. Whitby, Magpie, Trenchers, those are the 2. On your way, call in to Ossett, The Mews hotel and bar. Well with it, but book in advance. Keep up the great work!
I mentioned Toffs in another review, so glad you came over to my neck of the woods Gary. The prices on the menu looked expensive but thats a reflection of the area which is quite a posh part of North London, and also the quality that is undoubted with this place. Toffs has not only won the best fish and chip shop in London, its also won national prizes before. So much for the best fish and chips being up north ehhh! And you are within a few miles of the mighty Arsenal Football club! Just one last thing this is a family business and sadly the owner of the shop died a few years ago during the COVID pandemic, his name was George Georgiou. Good to see the family are carrying on producing decent fish and chips in his memory.
They are doing a great job, obviously being near the gunners was the issue lol, big game tomorrow especially as I’m a LFC fan, bragging rights for one of us tomorrow mate 👌
Hi Gary, Looks delicious 😋 crisp batter. Moist fish crispy fluffy chips. You said it all Plenty of condiments. A pleasant restaurant. A nice cup of tea. What more could one want? Good to see you. Thank you as always for the review 😊🎉 Looking out for your next vid'👍💯
First, congratulations on 50K subscribers, excellent! That looked fantastic, although as someone else said, I'm not sure about salad with Fish & Chips, but that's just a matter of personal taste I suppose. Another thing that I wouldn't be crazy about, the skin on the fish. Again, it's personal taste, but I prefer my fish skinless. But leaving my little quirks to one side, that was a mighty fine looking meal, and obviously, judging by your reactions, it tasted as good as it looked!
Gary, Nice thickness to that fillet of Haddock, which helped to keep it moist inside ! Just had a Haddock plate at a local restaurant, it was good but could of been much better, had the Haddock pieces been thicker. Enjoyed the video and good morning from the U.S.A.
Looked great Gary ..... but skin on is a huge no no for me. I'm a menace with the lemon, I'd have squirted Mr camera man right in the eye 😂😂😂 ... you're enthusiasm is infectious .. great vid 😊
Gary your reviews are excellent, not bombastic or loud. Very classy sir. At this rate you will need to start your own merchandise as the channel is deservedly growing.
Haven't been to Toffs in years. It's hard to tell from your review if they're pushing the sit-down side of things more now or if that was just what you chose. Certainly remember it more as a take away place (which I know would be harder to film a review of) but I must admit I did give a bit of a sigh at the inclusion of that salad garnish, and I'm afraid I can't see myself ever getting used to seeing mushy peas in a London fish n chip shop. Top review as ever, Gary
Another great review of a good place to visit. Triangular cut bread is often served but is almost pointless for a chip butty. A chip butty needs 90 degree angles for best results in construction of and eating of the butty.
My wife and I were in Whitby last week and the Abbey Wharf fish and chips were superb. It is a bar restaurant but their is also a take away off the side. Its on the South side of the river.
The only problem of Toff's is that they tend to get too busy on spring and summer Saturdays. On those days there is a long takeaway queue extending through the sidewalk outside and table service gets very inconsistent as some staff members get a bit stressed. I don't recommend crossing London to go to Toff's in these situations. But the food is very good. However, great fish and chips is also found elsewhere in London.
Im so glad you loved the fish and chips, toffs has so many multiple awards, this isnt too far from where i live, also well done for reaching 50k subscribers.
I used to work in Muswell Hill when I lived in London. Really nice area. Such a lovely plate of food and well deserving of the rating. I'm sure Toffs will be delighted with the review. You were like a happy little kid with that dessert.
Congratulations on your 50k. Well deserved. Fish looked good but I thought the batter was a bit lacklustre. Pudding looked immense! Price seemed reasonable too. Prefer skin off but seems to be more prevalent up north. In Whitby I'd go for Skate. Last time we were there it was fantastic. Also Trenchers and Quayside are well worth trying. Beef fat chips are just so much better than what we generally get in the south.
Great Video Gary,i live in leeds and go to murgatroyds great fish and chips every time. Now TOFF"S it looked really nice fish and chips. £14.50 in london for fish n chips and bread n butter and a cuppa i think thats great value for money, and even better value if its as good as that.Angel Fisheries in Whitby are great value Gary.
C’mon Gary, a challenge for 2024, to find good/high quality, hardworking eateries at budget prices. Prices that us normal folk would be able to go to. As soon as you mentioned £4.50 for mushy peas, it was a case of just forwarding to the end of your video for the final price. Unless those mushy peas give you that ‘When Harry met Sally cafe scene’ then I don’t think us average Joes would even consider it 😂
Hi Tony. I did say that the takeaway menu is far cheaper and basically half the price. I do agree though that the mushy peas are too expensive. Lol, I'm always on the hunt for cheaper places to eat but they're not as easy to find in this day and age! Cheers mate, have a good weekend.
@rickloginname well said, Gary allways gives honest reviews even of people don't allways agree with him,, like he says it's just his opinion, like people have there own opinions.
That is one great review Gary. BTW you are nearly 50k subs!! congrats - is Whitby where Dracula landed in England 🤣🤣🤣 Hope your FANGS are ready to bite into the locals...Count Gary
My local fish and chip shop in Muswell Hill. I always get takeaways on alternative Fridays though rather than sitting inside, through personal choice! 😎
I go to Whitby most weekends and I can honestly say that there is only one fish and chips worth eating and that’s the magpie it’s absolutely fantastic and the rest are very poor
This is nonsense and unhelpful. I have never experienced a very poor fish and chip restaurant in Whitby and to answer Gary’s question, I would consider The Magpie Cafe, Trenchers and Fisherman’s Wife.
@@davidedwards2197 well you certainly don’t know good food then and you most certainly don’t know a good quality fish and chips and as for the fisherman’s wife been better than the magpie is absolute rubbish as the place is hardly ever open so that pretty much tells you or should tell you , it has good views but that’s it .. I know magpie might be a little expensive for you but try it and you will see and taste the quality
Hi Gary, I went to Ya Hao, in Corby last night for the Imperial Feast (buffet). The food was excellent as was the service. I mentioned that the concept is eat all you want, but if you waste, you pay for the wastage. There is no time limit. We went at 2000hrs and stayed until 2145hrs. We’re not big eaters, but our son wanted to come as part of his 18th. He enjoyed himself and had plenty to eat. Stand out dishes were the smoked crispy chicken starter, meat spring rolls, Singapore noodles, sweet and sour chicken balls, squid, and fish in ginger and garlic. They used to include dessert, but they don’t now. It’s utilitarian inside, but the staff are very friendly. All food is cooked fresh to order so you don’t select from a servery. Corby is about 60 minutes on East Midlands Trains from St Pancras. Ya Hao is at 106 Rockingham Road, Corby, NN17 1AE. As for fish and chips in Whitby…you have to try the Magpie Cafe. It s got a big reputation. I thought it was ok, but not up to the hype. Great video….skin on!
Thanks Gary, for going to a chippy I have used for years. Glad you loved it. Their homemade fishcakes are too die for. Love the place.
It was quality 👍
I lived in Muswell Hill for a few years approximately 10 years ago. I had Toffs quite a few times and it was always exceptionally good. Glad you visited my old stomping ground Gary 👌👌
Your welcome Paul 😊
What I love about Gary's videos is the fact that I always feel that they are around 30 minutes yet in reality seem to be, on average, around 12-15 minutes. I think this is the sign of a great TH-camr i.e fill you content with what people have turned in for.
Very kind to say Garry thank you 😊
Yummy yummy 😋 can't wait
I've eaten there many times, but about 35 years ago in a previous life! Looks as i remember it, even the way its served with a salad garnish. Food was always first class. Brought back memories. Thanks, another great vlog.
I’m really pleaser it brought back memories Angie and thank you 😊
I've heard so many good things about Toffs & your visit has done nothing to dispel those views. Excellent vibe in the place & very friendly/attentive staff makes your experience even more enjoyable. Sticky toffee pudding is one of my favourites & their pudding is top drawer. Quality + Lucky you Gary.
It was an excellent restaurant Robert very impressed 😊
Hi Gary
Love all your vids the breakfast ones are great . I find you to be honest with your scores. You tell it how it is.
That’s very kind to say thank you
My Scottish friend once set a dish of sticky toffee pudding in front of me and another friend and said "I made this yesterday. Have some if you like." My friend and I proceeded to eat the entire leftover pudding bite by bite. First time I had ever had it, and I was in heaven. With custard? Oh I can't even imagine how that must be. Looks amazing. Glad you had dessert today.
Haha brilliant. Very very tasty!
After seeing the name TOFF’S, I thought you were in the wrong place. But not so. The meal looked delicious….I enjoy watching your expressions Gary. Sometimes words are not needed. Thanks again for another wonderful review.
Really kind Christopher thank you 😊
You can book in The Magpie in the afternoon, they also do a special Winter offer. We have been going there for decades, it is our special place.
👍
This brought back so many memories of living in Muswell Hill 2000 - 2008. I used to go to Toffs every 3-4 weeks and it looks like it's barely changed. So pleased you did this one Gary. A well deserved good review.
Thank youn Steve I’m pleased it brought back some great memories
Happy memories. Lived 10 mins down road. Toffs was my local. Glad you enjoyed it too!
Great to hear 👍
I'm salivating here in Australia looking at that beautiful looking fish and chips! Thanks Gary!
It’s was good Charles but definitely not the best
Now that's proper good. Finally a London one that matches what towns on the coast do (not always though there are still bad places). The chippy just along from me simply don't open if they can't get the very freshest haddock, they even stayed closed because the potatoes weren't up to scratch once (in Angus, which is potato central. Just down the coast from fish central).
Great info thank you 😊
I went to Toffs a few times when I lived in London and travelled all the way from home in West London to get there. I was never dissppointed. ❤
That’s wonderful to hear
Gary. As a Yorkshire lad Whitby is the home of fish and chips. My top three are
1. Fisherman’s Wife
2. Magpie
3.Trenches
In this order. The view from the tables at the fisherman’s wife are world class.
All I can say is “give it a go”
Yea I agree, give the fisherman’s wife a go, but be careful Gary he gets home about 3 o’clock 😀
agree, try them all mate
Totally agree. Best atmosphere at fisherman’s wife with a sea view on every seat
Appreciated thank you 😊
I'm not sure that a salad garish belongs on a plate of fish and chips! But the addition of bread and butter was a good touch... gotta have a chip butty! Great review as ever!
It is owned by Greek-Cypriots. They of course have a Greek salad on the menu too. Can't begrudge them a bit of salad.
I’ve eaten here , and if I’m honest, it was probably a 3/10
Nothing special and very overpriced
@MonkeyMagic10 That's London. My Dad's side of the family come from there too. He moved to the midlands as the wages didn't match the prices even back in the 60's.
Yes agreed Wendy. Thank you!
Each to their own of course, but I always ' dig' Salad with chips ( or any kind of Spuds for that matter) and of course the Fish!
Gary, totally agree, as someone who grew up in Barnet and still works in Haringey, spot on. I don't mind paying, if the food is quality. Top review, ta very much.
We fully agree Ken 😊
Enjoyed the video Gary, but boy so expensive. Mushy Peas £4.50 !!!!! Whit.
My standard Fish supper is £7.50 locally. Thanks again for taking the time to
do this. Love the video's.
Yes, definitely pricy Paul. As I said, takeaway menu much cheaper - basically half the price! Cheers mate.
Can't even get a standard portion of fish for £7.50 locally, let alone a fish supper.
When was that, 20 years ago?

Hi Gary, I’ve been following you for the last 3 months and have watched every video you have uploaded! This has been my favourite so far! The humour really tickled me and I believe you must be the most wholesome TH-camr… the only advice, don’t go changing!
I won’t and that is a lovely comment 😊
Almost 50,000 subscribers. Not surprising, always an enjoyable watch.
Gary is the GOAT 👍
Very kind just got 5herev🎉🎉
100% true
Right 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The Magpie in Whitby, fish n chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a pot of tea ... absolutely superb ... just as it should be 😊
The Magpie is my go-to in Whitby. Often imitated, never bettered. 👍
Or battered 🤔🤔🤔@@narabdela
Over rated,over priced...👎
@@narabdelayou've obviously never tried Mr Chips then..🤷
Whitby is synonymous with excellent fish and chips
So lovely to see you enjoying the meal, Gary ❣ When it's good, you're so appreciative. Luvvit ❣🤗
Always thank you 😊
Thank you, Gary, it's worth a look.
One thing that you might add is the amount that you tipped, or didn't.
It would be interesting to learn what the tipping expectation is these days, and where.
Next time 😊
Ah, Toffs! They've been going for decades. I grew up around there. Still remember first dates - bag of chips, battered sausage and scraps with a pack of beers, watching the sun set atop Alexandra Palace. Sad to hear the owner passed away during the pandemic.
That was sad Ken but the family doing an amazing job 👍
Another great review! Particularly loved the B&B side dish :) I'm a 'skin on' punter. Seeing the plethora of Northern Hemisphere fish on the menu left me feeling very nostalgic! Where I live we have some great fish... Coral Trout, Snapper and Red Emperor are excellent in a fish and chip 'setting', but I long to taste the battered Plaice my mum would share with me :) Thank you.
What about grunter
@@johngibson3837 I imagine Grunter would be really good. If I ever see it on the menu I'll certainly give it a go 😀 I also love our local Whiting too.
Sorry mate didn't read the menu bit, thought you must be going fishing up north, grunter is a fine fish
@@johngibson3837 Fishing up north... In my dreams 😀
Why not mate, the fish you mentioned are ozi so guess that's where you live
Yes that fish looked pretty perfect Gary, I like the skin on. I would recommend Robinsons fish shop in Whitby, the Magpie is ok but there's usually a massive queue!
Need to brace myself for that queue Nick. Cheers!
The Magpie is massively overhyped. Robinson'S for me, too.
Will do and will do one day Stuart
I feel like flying to London from Chicago just to try Toffs.Looks delicious.
It’s very chilly here 😳
Absolutely and I’ll pop along from Sydney Australia. Looks excellent.
Wow that’s amazing to hear James, skate in black butter my absolute favourite 🤩
You wouldn’t believe this Gary but a friend who was recently visiting London all the way from Canada actually went to this place, out of all the restaurants he could have chosen from. I just told him I was watching your review and he was really surprised and delighted. I am so glad that you enjoyed it as much as he did. I must say those mushy peas looked excellent. And the pudding looked so delicious. I also highly recommend my local fish and chips restaurant in Greenford-Traditional Fish and Chips-just in case you wish to try another such restaurant in London. I absolutely love them. Excellent review as always!
So very kind to say Monica that’s was a coincidence 😳
Definitely the Magpie in Whitby, you wont be disappointed 👍 As well as fantastic fish and chips i recommend the Muscles and Fries which was only about £10 when i went there last a few years back
Or even mussels 😆
💪💪 lol
Good to know! Thank you Gareth :)
Absolutely love Gary's london videos. So atmospheric paired with Gary's charisma they're unmissable
Very kind Paul thank you mate 👌
West London is just so me
100%
That was a superb review Gary. Environment and service first class, beautiful haddock in batter and the chips looked great and the mushy peas. The sticky toffee pudding and custard was lovely. Thought that was excellent value for money, considering London prices. Your rating was spot on and many thanks for sharing with us. Enjoyed your presentation. Take care and see you soon 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it and many thanks 😊
Really look forward to these videos Gary. Keep up the good work. The flow and speed of each video is just right and your down to earth, considered approach is brilliant
That is very kind to say 👍
It's always a relief to see Gary take his first bite and not shake his head. German Kebab!
Shhhhhhh 🤣
I saw the steam emanating from that fish and I knew it was going to be a super- steamy mouthful.
The German D'owner kebab in Coventry is also poor, especially for the money.
LOL @lucasmoreno. More like a German Sump Oil Sandwich! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂xx
I did have a little jog, Carol. But I have to admit it wasn’t far lol xx
Another excellent review Gary. You really have a talent for these reviews. Keep up the great work. I look forward to more reviews.
That is very kind thank you 😊
This looks like a delightful place to go for lunch, thank you for sharing.
Your completely correct apologies and thank you 😊
Another great and honest review your definitely the best food reviewer I've found on TH-cam and it reflects with the subscribers you have got I'm sure the 50k will be reached in the next few days. Keep up the excellent work Gary.
I appreciate that!
Cheers!
Someone else told me that was the first Spoons as well 🤷♂️
Ahh Gary Toffs is a splendid place to eat ive eaten there three times when ive been in North London over the years was recommended by my good friend Glenda Collins(1960's Joe Meek artistes) who i was with at the time who used it regular we had also been to Pizza Express close by but that was run of the mill place nothing outstanding.

Great to hear Marc 👍
Whereabouts? I will try it out if I'm passing through.

Thank you very much. Yes, I do. I'll take a look at that as it's also close to Paolo's Cafe which I like very much - appreciated!
Cheers
Thank you very much, mushy peas a little expensive 😊
Very proud and find it totally unbelievable 😳
Hi gary great review .that fish looked good i will have chippy lunch today after watching this👍.. in Whitby there's on one place i go and it's called Mr Chips lovely food cheers.
Excellent thank you Craig
Thanks for the info!
That you bother to seek out the very best places, WHEREVER they are, Gary. This little gem was no exception. That fish and chips looked lovely. I knew it was good because i could see you salivating when you picked up your knife and fork to begin... ( You and me both!)
The batter looked to me like it was as cooked perfectly.
@@GaryEats You deserve it, Gary. When you do something you do it properly.
Wow I didn’t know that and lots of people have suggested thank you 😊
Well with a place called Toff's you had to have the pud! It looked very good, not much more can be said! Almost 50,000 subs and only been on youtube just over six months, keep them coming Gary!
Thank you very kind 😊👍
Go on…..give it a go 🤣 👍
I certainly will thank you 😊
50k subscribers, congratulations Gary ! Well done. 🎉
Many thanks!
That sound amazing Allan 😊
Toffs was winning awards thirty years ago when I used to go there. Never ate inside. For me fish n chips is all about the take away experience. Eating with your fingers out of a paper wrapping. Vinegar dripping out of the bottom onto your new shoes. Getting stuck into a nice Saveloy. No mushy peas. None of that Northern muck, lol.
Great to see Toffs maintaining their high standards. Good enough to get a 9/10 from Mister Eats.
Thank you and be lucky.
The good old days 😊
My mouth was watering at the fish. Looked lovely . Little touches like the bread , nice big portion of chips etc, goes a long way. And that's my favourite pudding for afters. Wow indeed. Look forward to your videos Gary all the time 👍
Thanks so much Wayne
Congratulations on 50k subscribers Gary, well deserved.

Thanks so much Amy. Good recommendation, I'll be putting up a community post about Whitby next week!
Can't remember seeing salad garnish on fish 'n chips before.
It all looked so scrumptious
Salad made it look like pub food
It didn’t detract from the food 👍
Hi Gary and M Cameraman.
Looks like you found a good place here that serves up a good sized portion.
Only thing im not personally fussed on is Salad with fish and chips, the bit of lemon is fine but no thanks to the rest.
Great to here your coming up my neck of the woods to Whitby in North Yorkshire, to which palace1439 is bang on the money its Trenches, Magpie cafe and Royal Fisheries for me also, you may need to queue for the Magpie though as its very popular indeed, but there happy for people to film.

All right Gary. Never been to

Thank you Alan 👌
Damn you Gary! You've made me crave my favourite meal with this upload haha! It is Fish Friday to be fair so I'll let you off this time 😂
3 Venues in Whitby for Fish & Chips??
I don't know if you'd be interested however I have an Instagram page where I upload most of my Matchday Shenanigans, it's called TheKopBaltic and I mention in detail about each match where I can 😀
Additional P.S, Don't stop making Fish & Chips videos in London! :D It's your channel mate and it's upto you what you would like to upload! Besides, there are most likely a fair few hidden gems out there that we don't know about! 😅Let's Find Them!
This is just a quick reply but I will come back to you Monday 👍
@@GaryEats I found the other place in Whitby I was thinking about and wanted to recommend. The 3rd one I would probably go for and would like to try myself is called Royal Fisheries and it seems highly recommended on Google, so that's my personal 3 recommendations for you 😊 Magpie's, Trenchers and Royal Fisheries, definitely ask the locals though just incase! They'll know some Hidden Gems.

Looks superb, Gary! Must have been friday as I had fish and chips last night as well. I love mayo or curry sauce with my chips as well. 😃
Can’t disagree Adam 👌
You looked so happy with everything. They even put a bit of mixed salad on the side of the plate. An important touch. Portions were excellent. All in all, very unHarrods. Your romantic lunch with your cameraman was clearly well timed for an early Valentine's outing..... Hahahaha. Thank you again for the enjoyable video. As always, it is much appreciated!

It was absolutely lovely 😊
I lived in Muswell Hill as a student in the early 70s and can’t remember racing back from Hornsey College of Art for a plate like that. Remember some nice pubs though. Looks delicious! Two things go well with a nice cup of tea : one is beans on toast and the other has to be fish and chips.
Very very nice
Excellent presentation @Gary

Looked like a quite traditional place, and all the food looked lovely. One reservation though, salad... For me, salad has no place on a plate of fish and chips :)

Skin on, without question. So much flavour!
If you want simple, honest one of each, try the Fish Box just down from the station.
Noted! Thank you :)
Glad you enjoyed it. Toff's is my local. Been going there for years. Nice family business too! Look forward to the next video.

Thank you and it was quality 😊
That looked like some of the best fish and chips I've seen. Presentation was very nice with fresh ingredients.
It was very good 👍
Gary, Nice thickness to that fillet of Haddock, which helped to keep it moist inside ! Just had a Haddock plate at a local restaurant, it was good but could of been much better, had the Haddock pieces been thicker. Enjoyed the video and good morning from the U.S.A.
Good morning Jerry and thank you for watching and commenting as always 👍

Hello there!
No completely my choice and thank you so much 😊
Another great review of a good place to visit.
Triangular cut bread is often served but is almost pointless for a chip butty. A chip butty needs 90 degree angles for best results in construction of and eating of the butty.
I don’t mind Ian, just more mess as usual 😂
My wife and I were in Whitby last week and the Abbey Wharf fish and chips were superb. It is a bar restaurant but their is also a take away off the side. Its on the South side of the river.
Thank you Peter
The only problem of Toff's is that they tend to get too busy on spring and summer Saturdays. On those days there is a long takeaway queue extending through the sidewalk outside and table service gets very inconsistent as some staff members get a bit stressed. I don't recommend crossing London to go to Toff's in these situations.
But the food is very good. However, great fish and chips is also found elsewhere in London.
Where would you recommend Fabio 👍
Im so glad you loved the fish and chips, toffs has so many multiple awards, this isnt too far from where i live, also well done for reaching 50k subscribers.

It’s expensive but well worth it. Lucky to live nearby. Glad you enjoyed being in the dizzy heights of Muswell Hill!
It’s a lovely area Robin
I used to work in Muswell Hill when I lived in London. Really nice area.
Such a lovely plate of food and well deserving of the rating. I'm sure Toffs will be delighted with the review. You were like a happy little kid with that dessert.
I certainly was 😊😊😊
Great review Gary
It's skin on for me, adds to the flavour.
So good
Congratulations on your 50k.
Thank you so much, i've got some very good options

It was good value for London Martin, thank you for the suggestion
I don't think I agree. I like he mixes both affordable and pricey restaurants in his reviews.
@rickloginname well said, Gary allways gives honest reviews even of people don't allways agree with him,, like he says it's just his opinion, like people have there own opinions.
The Golden Chippy in Greenwich is a good one - comes with a chopped salad too, bit of mint through it - really works!
Yes, heard it’s pretty good 👍🏼
That is one great review Gary. BTW you are nearly 50k subs!! congrats - is Whitby where Dracula landed in England 🤣🤣🤣 Hope your FANGS are ready to bite into the locals...Count Gary
Lol very good
My local fish and chip shop in Muswell Hill. I always get takeaways on alternative Fridays though rather than sitting inside, through personal choice! 😎
Thank you very much for your comment
I go to Whitby most weekends and I can honestly say that there is only one fish and chips worth eating and that’s the magpie it’s absolutely fantastic and the rest are very poor
😅
Now let’s be nice, I’ll take a look at all but mostly appreciate your recommendations, thank you everyone 😊
£100 for 3 people, including tip, 3 pints of pineapple juice, 1 pint of coke, and 2 pints of Sunlik Chinese Lager.
Great stuff mate, I'll take a look!
