Hi everyone, I know what a few of you are going to say "another Fish and Chip video" but when in Yorkshire, you have to have it! Apologies for edit during intro. Had a few issues with the camera but all good now. Thank you all.
Love your channel but unfortunately I cannot eat anywhere that serves peas or beans so rely on morrisons to cook my own cod and the batter packet is good quality too. If you come across a chip shop with none of these items let me know and this includes vegi stuff as peas end up in them. Miss the good old days where people heated their own up after getting fish and chips
It's like watching David attenborough eat fish and chips🤣🤣🤣 and here we are just outside the Amazon pub.....the atmosphere the fawna is spectacular. The ambiance' and the surroundings add the the flavour of this long forgotten fish called the haddock🤣🤣and then we throw in the rare species which goes by the name of scampi🤣🤣🤣🤣🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
In America, it's difficult to find a fish and chip shop of any kind, let alone a good one. The places that do serve it generally bread it and deep fry, rather than batter. The only way I can get what I want is to make them myself. But when I make it to the UK, I will certainly be seeking them out.
@@pcm9969 It took us years to find a good chippy, and you are right its not like the real British thing but its the closest we will get, I drive a minimum of 70 miles round trip for mine, I used to drive over 300 miles round trip lol, when I go home I go nuts eating Fish n Chips, Pie n Peas, Sausage etc, the trip home is all about the food we miss so much.
I used Thompson's during Covid lockdown. Got my fish there regularly, one of the few good restaurants open. Never ever let me down for quality and the size of fish is amazing. Can totally recommend
The true sign of a great reviewer... Is if they think that they've been too harsh in their initial thoughts... They man up... And correct themselves and give an explanation as to why they've had a change of heart... Keep up the fantastic reviews Gary... 👍 Cheers mate. 🍺
The 'Yorkshire Fishcake' is simply what us up north call a 'Fish Pattie. Designed to use the little offcuts and trim of Cod/Haddock etc but quite often chips shops try to get away with sticking hardly any fish in them. When you get a good one though, hard to beat!
That is true, but to put a more positive spin on it it makes a fish and chip supper a lot more affordable. I grew up in Sheffield, everyone knew what they were getting when they ordered a fish cake, and they were always a lot cheaper than a piece of fish. And our local chip shop put a reasonable amount of fish in them. I preferred them as a kid because they didn't have bones.
I will never get tired of Gary Fish n Chips review. Honestly, it's practically your signature review cuisine at this point, along with Indian food. I also love that you get scampi, I don't really have haddock/cod and chips that much I can eat it and I enjoy it, but my first choice is scampi and chips. Plus chippies are different everywhere, especially between major counties and there's many regional chippies still to cover.
There’s nothing better than good old fish & chips with a side of scampi. After three and a half months on NHS budget hospital food, I’ve been enjoying having my taste buds revived with some good home cooking. Being housebound I really enjoy watching your channel Gary, keep the vids going.
Your enthusiasm is contagious 😊 that all looked lovely; the portion sizes are incredible for what you paid. Their hanging baskets were beautiful, someone obviously takes pride not just on the food they serve, but the premises too. Thank you for another great review 😊x
At last! A proper fish cake as I remember as a kid in Yorkshire. Made up of layers of Batter, potato slice, minced fish, potato slice then batter again. Fantastic and glad you enjoyed it Gary
It's the normal way of what a fishcake is in Sheffield. I don't think I actually know a chippy that serves the mushed together fishcakes like you buy in a supermarket.
I only found out earlier this year from my sister (over 50 years in Leeds) the difference about a Yorkshire fish cake. A slice of potato, fish, another slice of potato, battered and fried - lovely. So glad that you're enjoying your trip up North Gary. Thanks for the video. Cheers.
@@GaryEats It was another lovely review however this time I happened to notice your left hand is noticeably swollen and devoid of venous display. There also appears to be some favoring of your left hand (arm) and a definite loss of mobility. I do hope you are ok old chap? All the best!
Fish and chips is a matter of local pride. Now living in the US, I would kill to be able to place an order with the local chippy. Curry sauce, mushy peas, and a great crunch on the fish and the chips. I would be in heaven you never know how good it is until you can’t get it. 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🐟🥔🍟

Hi Gary, this fish and chips restaurant is one of my wife's favourite in Yorkshire. So when she is having time off from the hospital and travels with me up North, she and her friend from Leeds, takes the trip there to eat fish and chips. Unless they go to Whitby, of course. BTW she says that you need to order gravy as well, mate! Even though I can't eat it, it looked really nice and high quality. Another great review, mate! You're a star describing flavours and textures so it's just amazing. Have a wonderful rest of your time up North with your son, even though I suppose you're back home, but anyway enjoy the last of summer. Because when I come home in 8 days it will rain cats and dogs. Best regards and looking forward to your email, mate!
So sorry Frank, I will get that email sent across to you ASAP.. The last time I ordered gravy at a Fish and Chip shop, I got pelters in the comments lol!! Take care and thank you and best regards to your wife.
@@GaryEats 😂😂 did you get pelters for ordering gravy, up North it seems like everyone are ordering it with their fish and chips. My wife sends her regard back and wishes you and your son a great rest of your week. Tonight we're going out to the best burger restaurant in La Coruña, it's fantastic and only serve burger with dry aged beef and proper British chips made in beef drippings. Even though it's a Spanish restaurant. But I have my suspicion that the owner lived the UK for some time. 🤔
Stumbled across your videos fairly recently and have really enjoyed watching, incredible enthusiasm, praise where praise is due, criticism where criticism is due. No messing around. Fish and chips!! The more the merrier. So great to have another review to lift our spirits and raise a big smile. Cheers and thanks again Gary!! Stephen.
There are some great fish and chip shops in York. I reviewed my former local chippy, The Blue Fin on Tadcaster Road, York about a month ago and it has been my most viewed video but it is early days for me of course - I get in 1 month what my idol, Gary gets in 20 minutes hahaha. I was going to go to Thompsons this week but I cannot match Gary's enthusiasm so I will have to go there in September myself I think.
The fishcake isn't all mixed up inside because it's not a normal fishcake - it's a Yorkshire Fishcake, and the separate layers of potato and fish is a defining characteristic.
People can say 'this one' or 'that one' is the best chippy in the country, it's subjective (to a point) but it does appear Yorkshire seems to stand out a bit from the coast to the inland towns and cities.
It is very subjective. Personally i think yorkshire fish and chips is awful. Needs to be cooked in vegetable oil. Beef dripping creates putrid aftertaste. That batter looked awful btw!!!
@@cuemaster1475😂😂😂 it would take you 5 lifetimes to try every fish shop in Yorkshire you’ve clearly caught a few bad ens. Beef dripping is lovely but you’ve got a window to eat the fish and chips in 10 mins after cooking the dripping starts to set. If the fish is in the warmer when I walk in I won’t eat it.
@@Danfrank24 i respect and thank you for the information. I've had it from most of 'the best' places that yorkshire has to offer and had it cooked fresh and still not been impressed. End of the day its subjective and i much prefer when cooked in vegetable oil.
I love beautifully presented, fancy food in nice restaurants, but sometimes I just HAVE to have a good old portion of cod and chips! Haddock is enthusiastically welcomed as well. That looked like a fantastic ambassador for our national dish. Cheers, mate!
Thank you for spreading positivity mate ❤ because of you I’ve discovered restaurants that I would never have thought. I’m fighting cancer now and will defeat it, and your videos will help a lot when I go to the places ❤
Price, quality and portion size , can't beat that combination. Great review as always. Look forward to you and the cameraman next review. Make it a great day everyone.
Hi Gary, being from Yorkshire, I've enjoyed those fish cakes all my life & I was very disappointed when I was down south & ordered a fish cake! Another awesome video & a great recommendation from your viewers!
Anybody else wanting fish and chips tonight after watching this? 😂 I so want to try that fish cake. 😮 Another great review Gary. The food looked lovely, and great prices. I’m going to compile a list of places to visit going on your reviews Gary. ❤
Thank you for this review. I am blown away in how clean and inviting the restaurant is, I loved the high tech menu board with video presentation. But what amazed me more than anything is when you stood outside in the beginning, the flower arrangement is just out of this world stunning. Say something about the food, ok, biggest fish I have ever seen in my life and the best scampi ever. I live in North Cornwall, there is nothing that gets near to this. After this brilliant review I am seriously thinking about moving to Yorkshire.
There is a place called Whiteheads that was voted as the number 1 fish and chip shop last year in a place called Hornsea on the East Coast of Yorkshire
I watched rate my takeaway review whiteheads and they looked amazing but they new who he was and I think they gave him a special ( a larger size fish for people who doesn’t know) so I need to try them for myself which is on the cards.
I don’t doubt that it’s a great eatery but I’m always disappointed when a fish and chip shop has such a diverse menu selling burgers etc, I would prefer a traditional establishment just concentrating on the basics
In 1981 or 2 I went to Sheffield with my school friend to stay with her grandparents. I had a fish cake with my chips and I dream about it all these years on…two slabs potato, slice of cod in between, dipped in batter….fried in proper fat. It were right good….
In west Yorkshire we would all that a scallop fishcake we also do what they call a parsley fish cake that is made with mashed potato propper curly leaf parsley seasoned with salt and black pepper and a good amount of fresh fish made into tennis ball sizes dipped in batter and fried
Great review Gary and Son . Looks delicious and very generous portions . Nothing wrong with reviewing a favorite and staple at different locations imo .
I’m a County Durham lass and that “fishcake” is what we call a patty. A slice of fish between two slices of potato, battered and deep fried. Some call it a fishcake (to me that’s minced up fish and potatoes), some call it a fritter. Great content as always, Gary! I’m craving scampi now 😂 x
Haddock is normally thinner one end you’re the end is thicker plus is the chips and a bit soft. What time of year was it? They could be new potatoes and they are a lot soggy old potatoes.
You will think I'm a fussy fad eater but the skin on the fish put me off. It's ages since I've tasted good scampi, everything tasted better back in the day. What a glorious day it's been raining all day here in northern Ireland. You would light up any any situation or place Gary with your big smile and big personality. Cheers for cheering me up.😊 xx
My missus is from Yorkshire. She said they call our traditional fishcake a rissole, and the fish slice surrounded by sliced potatoes is a fishcake. That did look very nice though and the fish and scampi both looked very good. Thanks for another great vid Gary
get dried peas bicarbonte of soda soak for 48 hrs rinse then put into cold water add salt and wait for magic to happen just cover the peas with a lire of water and boil slow heat for an hour..you can freeze. or google
@@GaryEats Were they proper soda mushy peas ?? I just got back from Blackpool and it's getting harder and harder to get soda mushy peas. I've given up looking down south :(
Chip colour depends on the potato, and I believe the level of starch. From my own experience, potatoes that have been stored a while produce darker chips. Usually, this is in the winter months as the potatoes would have been dug up months earlier.
As a proud Lancastrian, I have to yield to the fact the the White Roses of Yorkshire do better Fish & Chips than us Red Roses. So many superior F&C places. With your meal Gary, if being hyper critical, maybe 20-30 less in the fryer.? You can't eat scampi in my book without tarty sauce. Try a finely chopped hard boiled egg mixed with 2-3 tablespoons of tarty sauce with your F&C. The fish cakes are exactly as my Nana used to make them, piece of fish sandwiched between two 'smacks' (slices of potato), battered, then fried. Great review & vid as usual Gary, & Cameraman.
@@ianthomas1060 I'm a mongrel Yorkshireman with a Lancashire father. I always used to love crossing the Pennines for a double pudding and chips with gravy.
I remember back in day when you could get a fish supper for 50 pence and could get a couple of pints and still have change for the bus home after a shift darn pit ...😂😂😂 Thats my grandad yorkshire through and through
@@GaryEatswhen I was a kid fish and chips were one and six...a bob for a fish and a tanner for chips...one shilling and sixpence or eighteen pence in todays money.
Fish & Chips is my 1st Love and.. was drooling at the offering you had Gary.... My oh my.... Another enthralling array of 'Fish & Chip' heaven !!! Great episode !!!
Fish looks delish I’m with you, first impression of your chips were that they looked insipid and sweated from the fish sitting on top The proof is in the eating, no doubt about it Had to google what scampi was, many definitions…best I could find was langoustine tails or prawn tails I couldn’t eat that without plenty of lemon…where was it? In Australia our sides would be a couple of dimmies and potato cakes instead As always, a very entertaining review Thank you
Food reviews are always subjective but love these and just listening to and watching a decent bloke who has great enthusiasm for what he does. Well played the unsung hero being ‘cameraman’. Great stuff fellas
We had a takeaway of fish and chips in Colchester they were some of the worst we have had! It was difficult to stick a fork into the chips! So 90% of it went into food recycling…..
Gary Fish and chip videos are most definitely the exception. I would say fish an chips and breakfast reviews, do as many as you please !! Great video as always :D
The Yorkshire Fishcake is what we in our part of Lancashire would have called a Scallop. Two slices of potato, fish bits between them and all coated in batter and fried. It was a way of the chip shops using up trimmings of fish and producing a low-cost meal. Just after the war this was very welcome to a lot of working families and fish wasn't rationed, if I remember.
Same in Manchester when I was a kid, glad you said it, thought I had misremembered. Cheaper than a fish, you could also ask for pea wet, juice of mushies and fish bits at the end of the evening. Scrummaging!,
@@CatherineDover I'm from the east side of Manchester and our chippy was Mrs Osgood's. If you were really hard-up, you had a penny bag of 'scraps', all the bits of batter the chippy scooped out of the fat. And it was lard then, fat, not these posh oils they use now. I remember Mr Osgood chipping the potatoes, all manual. He'd put the potato on the cutters and pull the handle down so fast, a wonder he didn't chip his fingers too.
@@WolfmanWoody believe it or not lard was much tastier, dripping too, your scraps were our fish bits, pretty hopeful even then for a tiny bit of fish stuck in the batter. Happy days. There were four of us kids and we shared the lot, loved every minute.
I was with you when you cut into the Haddock but as you revealed the middle was crammed full of fish. Would love to try that fish cake. It all looked such good value for money. Excellent review makes me want to visit there.
Jesus H Christ! £9.95 for a piece of Haddock that size - AND that's including the chips?????? You wouldn't get the fish alone for that where I live! A fillet that size would be a large, and you'd be probably looking at £11-12 for the fish alone. Chips would be £2.50-3.00 for a standard portion. My foodie road trip just keeps getting longer thanks to you Gary !! 😂
There's few places (no pun intended) near the sea which does really good fish and chips, and that's because the fish invariably never comes from local boats. A case where this is eminently not the case is in Anstruther in Fife where the fish and chip shops are in another class and regularly win awards. Haddock is the fish of choice throughout Scotland and in almost every venue you'll get 2 pieces of fish, and the batter is almost like it's painted on unlike the puffa jacket batter shown here. So Gary, off you go up to The Kingdom and find out for yourself!
Gary. Garlic 🍄, Baked potato with cheese and beans, with a side of mushy peas please. Oh, and a pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord. Keep the change as I'm an internet millionaire 🙂 My Learjet used the A64 as a runway. Don't think they are also in Stamford Bridge anymore. Looked at website, and updated Google for them. I'm surprised a seagull didn't land on your head and poo, to help it "go over". (I sent that van to take you out at 7m21s and I want my money back. He came in hot, and missed.) What a great way to build a fishcake. That's food art. 10/10.
Went there yesterday as always when were at our caravan... biblically good. I defy anyone to match them especially the chips. Give it a go Gary.. you won't regret it.@@GaryEats
We said the same when you first cut into the fish…it didn’t look that great but the bit at the end looked soooo good. And I need that fish cake in my life! Thanks for another great review Gary

Thank you very much for your wonderful comment
that crunch is amazing! love your vids Gary
That’s very kind to say, thank you
Well it will leave a certain brand name in padstow in the dust nice one Gary 😊
LOL
Thank you for spreading positivity mate ❤ because of you I’ve discovered restaurants that I would never have thought. I’m fighting cancer now and will defeat it, and your videos will help a lot when I go to the places ❤
I really appreciate that, thank you
Fuck cancer. Crack on mate.

Gary, if you started at the tail-end of the haddock, yes, it's thinner.
Yes that was my fault
I thought you started in the middle.. Oh well
Price, quality and portion size , can't beat that combination. Great review as always. Look forward to you and the cameraman next review. Make it a great day everyone.
Excellent quality Bino, thank you
Its always lovely to see you enjoying a really good meal, Gary❣️ But, OMW, the flowers in the hanging baskets. 😍. Absolutely glorious ❣️🪻🌼⚘️
Thanks so much lovely Melany
Another great video - well done guys.
Thank you very much, Robin
Yes!! Proper fish cake and Yorkshire IS the best for these things. Another great review, love your work well done again Gary 👍🏻
That’s very kind, thank you very much
Hi Gary, being from Yorkshire, I've enjoyed those fish cakes all my life & I was very disappointed when I was down south & ordered a fish cake!
Another awesome video & a great recommendation from your viewers!
They are totally different to what you get in Yorkshire
Anybody else wanting fish and chips tonight after watching this? 😂
I so want to try that fish cake. 😮
Another great review Gary.
The food looked lovely, and great prices.
I’m going to compile a list of places to visit going on your reviews Gary. ❤
I want it again Caroline! Lol thank you
I don’t blame you Gary, it looked gorgeous. 😆
Poor old Rick Stein is never going to to live this down. Lol Nice video Gary and I agree that food looked so yummy.
I made up for it with his restaurant review lol
Gary...always lovely to see you impressed and with a smile on your face. Enjoy the next one!
That’s very quick to say, thank you
I love how you do research about the place you're going to be eating at. Really adds something to the video😁
That’s very kind to say, thank you
Wow what a bargain for such quality produce! Enjoy the rest of your trip Gaz and cameraman.
Thank you kindly Phil
Thank you for this review. I am blown away in how clean and inviting the restaurant is, I loved the high tech menu board with video presentation. But what amazed me more than anything is when you stood outside in the beginning, the flower arrangement is just out of this world stunning. Say something about the food, ok, biggest fish I have ever seen in my life and the best scampi ever. I live in North Cornwall, there is nothing that gets near to this. After this brilliant review I am seriously thinking about moving to Yorkshire.
I’m also thinking of moving to Yorkshire some fantastic fish and chip shops
Nice looking fish and chips, well cooked and I’d love to try that fish cake. Not something we have up in Scotland.
I agree with you it was excellent fish and chips
There is a place called Whiteheads that was voted as the number 1 fish and chip shop last year in a place called Hornsea on the East Coast of Yorkshire
I will have to give it a go, second person to mention it now on this video
@@GaryEatsI've a friend who goes to hornsea and she's mentioned whiteheads as super good
I watched rate my takeaway review whiteheads and they looked amazing but they new who he was and I think they gave him a special ( a larger size fish for people who doesn’t know) so I need to try them for myself which is on the cards.
I don’t doubt that it’s a great eatery but I’m always disappointed when a fish and chip shop has such a diverse menu selling burgers etc, I would prefer a traditional establishment just concentrating on the basics
@@IAmAshleyBailez the trouble with that is I think there’s 1,000,050 7000 different organization the Hand out best fish & chip awards
That all looked so good! I have to visit some of these places when I visit the UK. This one is on the list for sure!
I have to say this was excellent
As Chief Brody said in jaws Gary, you're going to need a bigger boat! What a piece of fish that is. 😂
LOL it was ginormous lol
That change of heart at 11:52 was outrageous 😅
It kept you on your toes though lol 😂
@@GaryEatshahah it did 😅 you made me order a fish and chips after watching your video
Nice to watch Gary's videos after watching the horrendous riot scenes this weekend.
Thank you Tai
In 1981 or 2 I went to Sheffield with my school friend to stay with her grandparents. I had a fish cake with my chips and I dream about it all these years on…two slabs potato, slice of cod in between, dipped in batter….fried in proper fat. It were right good….
In west Yorkshire we would all that a scallop fishcake we also do what they call a parsley fish cake that is made with mashed potato propper curly leaf parsley seasoned with salt and black pepper and a good amount of fresh fish made into tennis ball sizes dipped in batter and fried
@@jaynebailey2266 it was delicious whatever you call it 😊♥️
They are delicious
Great review Gary and Son . Looks delicious and very generous portions . Nothing wrong with reviewing a favorite and staple at different locations imo .
Thank you very much, Philip
I’m a County Durham lass and that “fishcake” is what we call a patty. A slice of fish between two slices of potato, battered and deep fried. Some call it a fishcake (to me that’s minced up fish and potatoes), some call it a fritter. Great content as always, Gary! I’m craving scampi now 😂 x
Thank you very much for the information Moyà, and thank you very much for your comment
First impressions, the place looks spotless, right up my street.
Those are proper chipper chips as we say 🏴
Another cracking review thank you 👍
Thanks so much as always Rosie. Tea tonight?
@@GaryEats That question made me chuckle.
All day veggie breakfast, loads of beans, hash browns and no mushrooms 😉
My part of Scotland they would be "Chippy Chips" 😂
Looks really yummy! Great review as always Gary. The crunch of the haddock!
Thank you very much
Haddock is normally thinner one end you’re the end is thicker plus is the chips and a bit soft. What time of year was it? They could be new potatoes and they are a lot soggy old potatoes.
I’ve been here around about 2 o’clock, Gary
You will think I'm a fussy fad eater but the skin on the fish put me off. It's ages since I've tasted good scampi, everything tasted better back in the day. What a glorious day it's been raining all day here in northern Ireland. You would light up any any situation or place Gary with your big smile and big personality. Cheers for cheering me up.😊 xx
That’s so very kind to say thank you very much, Margaret xx
That looked like a generous portion and a nice place. Another great review, Gary.
Thank you kindly
You forgot the tartar sauce seriously Gary 😂😂
You need to put the Yorkshire fishcake in a bread cake . Been quiet a few times to Thompson's on our way to the coast
Thank you very much for the information
Great review. Yorkshire fish cakes are the best! I thought that van that turned into the car park was driving straight at you. ❤
Thank you very much, and thankfully, I didn’t notice ❤️
My missus is from Yorkshire. She said they call our traditional fishcake a rissole, and the fish slice surrounded by sliced potatoes is a fishcake. That did look very nice though and the fish and scampi both looked very good. Thanks for another great vid Gary
Your missus is bang on mate
Interesting! Thanks Steve, the food was great
I'm up in York next month, can you tell where I'm headed 😁
Definitely use Google lol 😂
Quality viewing Gary. Love the honest channel. I'm addicted. Can't wait for the next installment
Thanks so much
Gary sure loves his mushy peas! As a Canadian we don’t get peas made like that over here.
I do but only when they're done right!
get dried peas bicarbonte of soda soak for 48 hrs rinse then put into cold water add salt and wait for magic to happen just cover the peas with a lire of water and boil slow heat for an hour..you can freeze. or google
so easy too do
@@GaryEats Were they proper soda mushy peas ?? I just got back from Blackpool and it's getting harder and harder to get soda mushy peas. I've given up looking down south :(
Chip colour depends on the potato, and I believe the level of starch. From my own experience, potatoes that have been stored a while produce darker chips. Usually, this is in the winter months as the potatoes would have been dug up months earlier.
Ps. I actually prefer darker chips.
Fair enough!
You are spot on, starches increase as the potatoes age. Starch turns to sugars when fried producing browning 👍🏾😊
Fully agree. You can tell when the new crop of potatoes is being used. The chips are pale and have a harder texture.
That is a great review..glad u liked the meal...wish I was nearby for a meal
That’s very kind to say, thank you
As a proud Lancastrian, I have to yield to the fact the the White Roses of Yorkshire do better Fish & Chips than us Red Roses.
Don’t worry Ian, you still make the best black pudding !! 👍
@@ianthomas1060 I'm a mongrel Yorkshireman with a Lancashire father. I always used to love crossing the Pennines for a double pudding and chips with gravy.

@@ScratchySlide Double pudding!! Fair play.
In my home town of Liverpool in the 60s those fish cakes were called scallops and my favourite!

In the Midlands a scallop is just a battered thick slice of potato 🙂
That was legendary fish and chips Gary. Everything looked so good, and the fish cake, is a work of genius. Exceptional video.
That’s very hard to say as always, Dale thank you very much
I remember back in day when you could get a fish supper for 50 pence and could get a couple of pints and still have change for the bus home after a shift darn pit ...😂😂😂 Thats my grandad yorkshire through and through

A Yorkshire fish cake is layers of fish and potato in batter . Any other fish cake is really a rissole.
It was absolutely delicious Simon, never had one before
I never knew the difference. Thanks for explaining 👍
We call them 'fish slices'.
Fish & Chips is my 1st Love and.. was drooling at the offering you had Gary.... My oh my.... Another enthralling array of 'Fish & Chip' heaven !!! Great episode !!!

Fish looks delish
I’m with you, first impression of your chips were that they looked insipid and sweated from the fish sitting on top
The proof is in the eating, no doubt about it
Had to google what scampi was, many definitions…best I could find was langoustine tails or prawn tails
I couldn’t eat that without plenty of lemon…where was it?
In Australia our sides would be a couple of dimmies and potato cakes instead
As always, a very entertaining review
Thank you
Thank you very much for your actual comment as always Rod, I did miss my lemon on this occasion

Top man thank you
The Yorkshire Fishcake is what we in our part of Lancashire would have called a Scallop. Two slices of potato, fish bits between them and all coated in batter and fried. It was a way of the chip shops using up trimmings of fish and producing a low-cost meal. Just after the war this was very welcome to a lot of working families and fish wasn't rationed, if I remember.
How odd that a scallop in a Yorkshire fish shop would just be a slice of potato battered and fried.
Thank you very much for the information
Thank you very much for your lovely comment, Martin
Jesus H Christ! £9.95 for a piece of Haddock that size - AND that's including the chips?????? You wouldn't get the fish alone for that where I live! A fillet that size would be a large, and you'd be probably looking at £11-12 for the fish alone. Chips would be £2.50-3.00 for a standard portion.
My foodie road trip just keeps getting longer thanks to you Gary !! 😂
Incredible value isn't it!?
Whist you’re in York bettys tea Room so top notch afternoon tea! I don’t think you’ve reviewed afternoon tea on the channel
I’d like to see an afternoon tea review. It might be a bit too British for the international viewers though! 😂
Afternoon Tea is on the list but I'm saving it for Xmas
Best afternoon tea in York is in the Grand Hotel, it's where a lot of the locals go. Betty's is good but overrated in my opinion. @@GaryEats
Book in advance. I went once and didn't get in the queue was too long.
I went to Betty's in the 80s it was top. Returned to York about 18 years later, I forgot the dates soz, and it was poor. Just my opinion 🤷
Now thats what i call value nice find, must try it. Get up to scotland soon!
I will be coming to Scotland in the next few months
There's few places (no pun intended) near the sea which does really good fish and chips, and that's because the fish invariably never comes from local boats. A case where this is eminently not the case is in Anstruther in Fife where the fish and chip shops are in another class and regularly win awards. Haddock is the fish of choice throughout Scotland and in almost every venue you'll get 2 pieces of fish, and the batter is almost like it's painted on unlike the puffa jacket batter shown here.
So Gary, off you go up to The Kingdom and find out for yourself!
It’s on the list for me to do when I visit Scotland
@@GaryEats You won't be disappointed Gary
