DIY Solo Off Grid Log Woodshed Build From Start To Finish

  • Hammered out the new woodshed. This is a very important structure on our off grid homestead. It will keep rain and snow off our firewood allowing it to dry/season and will also give us a spot to park the 4wheeler and a couple of other things. A new upgraded chicken coop is on the docket next. #diy #outdoors #homestead

If can keep water away they will last a very long time!
    I like the natural build!
Have you contacted Bluetti about being a sponsor!
That would really help you being off grid!

Thank you! They have contacted me but I don’t want any sponsors. I think it’s kind of ruining TH-cam. I like doing TH-cam because I like doing TH-cam, but I want to do it on my own terms, when I want, and say what I want to say, and share what I want to share. With no filters. Once you start accepting money from sponsors you are no longer free, and that’s no way to live.

Absolutely, if the product helps the content creator I’ll watch the sales pitch! Its a win for both!
I admire Kyle for doing just what he does!
Let’s face it, we carry to much stuff!
He needs a good natural build shop!
If I was him I’d checkout Mr chickadee and kris harbor for ways to build with natural materials or as many natural materials to keep costs to minimum!
He’s young and health with a woodsman’s heart!

This an ingenious way to have a woodshed when you ample trees to build it. One thing I did with my woodshed was I went to lumber yards and big box stores that have lots of those oak pallets and asking them nicely, they gave broken ones to me and some good ones. I repaired them and my wood sits on them off the ground with a nice air space to keep them dry. Great job as always Kyle.

I built a similar woodshed about 15 years ago and have filled and emptied it many times over. I built it near the cabin - but not too near - because I wanted to make sure critters and carpenter ants that might take up residence there can’t move directly into the cabin. It’s worth the extra little walk in the snow.

    Three big bays.
I've turned to criss-cross (Lincoln log style) stacking of firewood as it provides much better drying air circulation and really cuts down on the damn nesting critters common to traditional tight parallel stacked firewood piles. Like 3" wolf spiders.
Best for newly split wood especially if it's green.
Takes up to 50% more room though.

Hey Kyle. My wife and I enjoy your videos very much. You are a hard worker. We really appreciate the fact you "use what you have" but make it as nice as possible. To be honest, we have stopped watching 75% of the "off grid/homesteader" channels. They are always showing brand new trucks, tractors, elaborate solar arrangements etc. We can't relate to them, they live like they are wealthy. You don't come off that way at all. My friends in the UP of Michigan around Baraga are getting 12"+ of wet snow today (May 1st) Are you getting any? P.S. we love seeing Scooter play also 😊👍.

  • @danmc7815

    Nice work!
For those who do not wish to put in all this effort, I have used landscape timbers instead of peeling the logs. They are 8 feet long and actually measure 2.5 x 3.5. Inches in the cross section. The work and look nice.
For a roof, I have used both corrugated plastic and metal. Always wanted to try clear polycarbonate, just a sheet - not double wall, for a wood shed. Have not done so yet. Should allow the wood to get dry quickly.
8 x 24 should give you probably two good years. I burn about 5 cords a year, heating with only wood. Two of my wood sheds look like these, but with partial side walls. Both were 8 x 16, one I expanded to 12 x 16, then divided it in half. Each 12 x 8 area holds enough for a winter. I want to have enough wood to fill both by Easter. If I cut and split wood before Easter, the wood will be burnable for the coming winter. If both are full at Easter, i should be good for the next two winters.
As cheap internal dividers, between years, I have used old pallets.
    Good luck!

Will be easy to extend the back a few feet for extra dry space. You better get with it, those chicks are growing like crazy. Good job, much like I would have done it. The burn boils the resin inside and kind of camelizes the wood to resist rot. Leaves a barrier insects don't like to eat. It works. Now if you have the resources the easies way to bark a log is to bury it for a couple months leases, dirt moss some organic material. The bark litterally falls off. we did that for years with poplar wood and oak.
