"Cutting firewood heats you twice, once when you cut it, and once when you burn it." "We're NOT building a piano, we're building the box the piano came in." I love those old sayings, Nice wood stove shelter. Thanks Dave.
We used to say that wood warms you 3 times--when you cut it, when you split it, and finally, when you burn it. Splitting wood in the winter is a good way to work up a sweat.
*Don't forget stacking it boys. The variation I've heard is it warms you 4 times, when you cut it, split it, stack it, and burn it. Might have to upgrade it to 5 with the embers warming your soul haha 😅
I like the piano box thing - I’m building one that’s 16’ x 6’ right now and it’s not perfect but I keep telling myself - “it’s just for firewood, it’s not a living space”
I agree with Ephemeral…. Have you any idea how much work just moving the camera around is? And then the editing😅 I’m always happy and grateful for any content the Whipples upload for our enjoyment.
Dave,,, I am a 70 year old man with end stage renal failure on dialysis so I spend a lot of time watching TH-cam. I wanted you to know how much I appreciate your videos. I find the simplicity , basic no frills approach to diy projects a real joy to watch. Thanks for sharing.
I’m just a city guy from California, but I’ve watched every second of videos you have released. I learn something new every video. Thanks Dave for all your work on these.
I’m sure you don’t realize ur Masterful level of skill or strength - you have done it all ur life, so it’s just your normal. You lift and toss those logs w/ease. You inspire many more than you realize. Nice video. Nothing much better than a good man - building, landscaping, swinging an axe & tossing logs. 💪
Dave I have to tell you that you and Brooke raised an amazing young man. Very eloquent when he speaks, level headed, and just seems to be a nice kid. Love his channel and will look forward to watching g hi. Grow up. Nice job sir. As I messaged on Brooke's channel, you guys should have raised 10 kids as good as Nick came out. Love your family. Thanks for sharing
Great project Dave, Great reasons for doing the job all by hand and love that all your using is that torpedo level and the reason that's all you have. Hope Micky is Loving life. Had a good laugh at the reason not to be angry at all the rocks lol Amen
Another zen video from Dave. I really enjoy watching you create things and it's nice to hear you play the guitar in the background. The wood shed looks great. I'm so glad that fire was put out. Way too close for comfort.
Dave, I watch, your Wife, Son, and your Video's. Over the year's ya'll have been so inspirational to me. I now have end stage Pancreatic Cancer and won't be around much longer, but, I'll watch every single Video you all make until then . Love you all... Thank's for the memories... 🥰
You know Dave, even though I follow your channel, the algorithms only ever flip one of your videos my way, every once in a while. But for a city slicker like me, they are fascinating and I enjoy the journey you take us on and tid bits of knowledge every time. Keep it up mate.
Dave.... We have been talking about building a small shed for our wood. We've been burning wood for 47 years.... & still haven't built one! We cover our woodpile with heavy tarps. I am 70 and my hubby will be 68 soon, so I guess we will continue to use tarps! Your woodshed, rock garden and firepit area are fantastic! Thank You for another great video! I do believe I saw Brooke in the background in this video! 👍 Until your next video ~~~ Stay safe, healthy and happy!
With a little help you could probably build a shed. I'm 68 and built one just like this by myself. I would have appreciated a helper but none was available, so I just went at it, and it turned out fine. On the other hand, tarps work great, too, and there's no climbing involved! Hope you continue to enjoy your wood burning.
Enjoyed this wood shed build. A very much needed building. I was surprised that the sides are so low. I hear with a good size wood stove but have never had a wood shed. In the last 9 years, I should have had one built . It would have kept the wood from rotting and would have saved space. I should have sent Brooke a carrier pigeon note and pleated, " please come to Central Okla. To help me on a little project". The pay ain't good but we could laugh a lot. LOL. I love to watch all the Whipple videos. Thanks
That structure is so versatile, you could do anything with it. I built my workshop, my bathroom and a roof over my caravan and one day will pull it out and enclose it as my main house.
Dave, Once again you have built a thing of beauty! Why is it beautiful, because you did it with your own two hands, simple tools, and you completed several projects out of one project. God Bless you and your family. Hope your head is feeling better.
The board and level falling on your head was great. Not because it happen but because stuff like that happens to all of us and it is good to see a video include it. Love your channel. God Bless and take care.
I always enjoy your videos. I am looking forward to the next one. Between you, Brooke, your brother & now your son the Whipple family keeps me entertained. Blessings to the Whipple's!
That wood shed is absolutely fabulous! Definitely a pavilion and a little build on the side for a wood store 😅,I can imagine the back ache after stripping that land back ouch! But you really have done a fantastic build, again! You put your heart & sole into everything you do,which is why everything is just fabulous! Enjoy your wood store and sitting looking at the fruits of your labour. 👍
I normally watch videos like this at 1.5x or faster just for something on a second screen while I work but I just finished it and realized I had it at 1x and was locked in the entire time. Great build!
Hi Dave, fell a tree today in North GA barely clippin the wood shed w/ a branch, wild timing!! Thanks for the content!! You are an amazing story teller!
That is one smart log shed Dave. I fear my log chopping days are behind me, for now, but I wish I'd thought of that tyre log holder! What a time saver. We used to have mostly oak, olive and pine logs on our property, made for some very hot and beautiful smelling fires. And I soon learnt to wear a hard hat in that sort of a situation, after a similar incident! I guess the heat won out? Another fine video.
A lot of people don't realize that even if you don't have your own trees to cut for firewood, you can get a firewood permit to cut firewood from almost every national and state forests. The permit entitles you to cut 4 cords of wood (full cords, not little face cords) for just $20 ! Not only is it an inexpensive form of firewood, but it also reduces forest fire fuel to boot ! We heated a 5 bedroom farmhouse in northern Michigan for $120 per winter.
Thanks, Dave. I built a woodshed almost identical to yours a few years ago - also all by myself with just hand tools - though I did use a cordless driver and screws instead of hammer and nails. I'd never built anything like that before and basically made it up as I went along. And it turned out great. The one thing I found came in most handy was a set of clamps to hold boards in place while I screwed them. Besides not being very strong any more (I'm 68), I have a pinched nerve in my neck and the arm on that side is only about 50% as strong as the other. I remembered that I had the clamps after getting hit in the head exactly the same way you did. I swore a lot more than you did, too. After that, things went a lot better. For sinking the the posts I used a Fiskars post hole digger, which works the opposite way of yours -- that is, you push the handles together instead of pulling them apart. I can't use a regular post hole digger because of my injury but the Fiskars model (The shafts cross to form like an "X") made the job do-able for me and I'd prefer it even if I could use a traditional one. The posts I secured in place by tamping the dirt down with a board and hammer after every six inches or so. The posts are completely solid and plumb today, three years later. I don't believe it's necessary to put concrete in the post holes for a project like this, but that's just my personal belief based on my experience. Anyhow, thanks for the video and I'd encourage anyone who has wanted to try a project like this to go ahead and give it a shot. It doesn't need to be perfect and as long as it's reasonably square and your posts are secure in the ground, you should be fine. Thanks again to Dave for this and all of his videos.
Love the end product of your labor. I really felt for you when the rail dropped down, I said "OUCH" before you did. I know what you mean about feeling really satisfied and happy about getting wood split and under cover for winter. Well done as always Dave.
Hi Dave, I gotta say that you have way more self control than most guys I know including myself. If that 2x6 would have fallen on my head like that I probably would have needed to spend a couple of minutes looking for 1 or 2 tools in the woods lol. Awesome video, thank you for the instructive and informing content.
Holy cow! Felling a tree right beside a post you just set, with your pickup in the approximate line of fire! Talk about confidence in your abilities. I really enjoy your content!
Hey buddy how are ya? I’m glad to see your son getting into the family business! He will do well! If I was his Dad I would be very proud of him! I’m sure you and Brooke are!! I need to build a wood shed to, but the snow here on the western slope is wet and very heavy.I will need to put at least a 6/12 pitch to keep it from crushing! I will use the lumber I’ve cut on my sawmill. Gotta live free lumber! On another note I find myself going back and rewatching many of your videos a lot lately. The cabin builds the off grid talks and the out house builds are my favorite. Well also the traveling across Canada ones are good to! Thanks Dave for what you do, I’ve learn so much from you, your wife, brother, and now son. Take care brother, God bless you all!
Wow. You felled that tree precisely between the blue truck/work table and the pink umbrella covered swing. Nice shot! BTW, never try to catch a falling knife, or level. 😵💫 Good luck with that fire. 😨
Dave your videos are impeccable my friend the way you narrate your videos makes you sound like a professional narrator .! ,,, that might be a good second career for you . THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA.....
I love this! We built one, too! Super for the fireplaces, wood cook stove, and wood stoves! It's great to live in the woods where wood is at hand! Good for you!
I like to watch your channel especially when you are building something. You make it look so easy and relaxed. You are one of the best builders here in TH-cam.
Newbie here. My husband and I were stationed at Elmendorf AFB Anchorage in the 80s and 90s and still travel back up the Al-Can to visit with our daughters who chose to remain in Alaska. We know what you mean about the rocks, it's pure labor intense. When our kids were small I had the bright idea of installing a chainlink fence to at least keep the kids inside the fence. However the moose couldn't care less, they just stepped over it. 😊 All those rocks made during the ice age when the glaciers were slowly grinding down stone leaving behind end moraine. Back to the fence, we tried using an auger to drill the fence posts, not a good idea. We barely made it 5-6 inches deep and the auger itself stopped cold and jerked the motor end to spinning crazy! Nearly broke my wrist. We decided to just get on our hands and knees and dug the holes by hand. Never again! Learned a good lesson.
Woo hoo, I “burnt in and seasoned” outside my Survivor Grizzly Bear camp stove that I’m installing in my 12’x12’ log cabin that I just bought and am restoring in northern Wisconsin. One of your videos pointed this out, thanks!!! She and her pipes were real stinkers.
I love the way the wood shed turned out! You’re right, it “wood” (hahaha) have made a nice pavilion. I can’t wait to see what Alaskan adventures you and Brooke might have over the coming winter! Blessings ❤️
I remember the first time I had mixed feelings filling a whole wood shed as a chore. There was an adrenaline, a tiredness. But also a feeling of pride I saw every day from my effect that lasted through the year.
Your tenacity leaves me in the dust. Give me a moose roast and some potatoes and carrots and a day, I'm your man. I admire your ability to see a finished project even if it takes a while. And good luck to Mickey. I know you shouldn't start a sentence with "and", but don't tell Mickey.
Perfect timing Dave! Heading to the property next weekend and have been procrastinating on this project as well. I've been holding off because I've been undecided on the desgin. Love this shed build, simple strong design, with no hardware to purchase.
One thing is for sure Dave, you always come thru with the 100% best builds. You're work is admirable. Thank you for the outstanding videos!! Love you're family❤!!
Great workmanship David!!!! Good to see you outside in Alaska with the perfect project. I seen Brooke working on her project and your wife is a tough girl in the woods!!!! Both of you two work like I did and it will catch up with you at 55 years old so slow down and smell the flowers as you go through the life you are making for your future.
Hi Dave, one point you missed on metal roofing. The roof I live under was installed 40+ years ago and not a single leak. It is about time I went up there and replaced the tech screws because those gaskets don't last forever but so far so good. BTW the mention of rain hitting the metal roof is so true, hail gets a bit loud if the stone get bigger but still nothing to fret about.
Thanks for always keeping it simple Dave! Reminds me you don’t need the latest and greatest to make something nice and functional. Your sons channel is coming along nice!
Dave I now have a new appreciation for a job well done ! I am not sure who built our farm woodshed ? Could have been my Husbands Grandfather but they built it to last! Thank you for sharing your hard work! Now I know why we love good old construction and wood heat
Yeah, that’s a super nice wood shed, but love having a wood shed. We ve had massive oak trees blowing down in hurricanes and wind shears here in north Louisiana. Also had to add hoop trampoline with tarp. We had so much. Thank God we have a wood splitter that is also in the wood barn to split those 28 inch wide logs, it feels like wrestling a bull into position to split. Always love your content and practical applications to necessary structures. By the way it’s 102 in the shade today. No work for us senior citizens.
Hey Dave, I do enjoy your video's, I can't wait for You and Brooke to get back to the cabin and Property you bought with all the trees that had fallen on the roof. I believe the last video you had got the roof cleared off.👍👍👍👍
I love this video. Dave's explanations of everything are pure gold. Always enjoyable. And to top it off, I'm planning to build a structure just like this, so the pointers are extremely helpful.
Also by the way I wish you had many many brothers because some of us out here would give part of our left leg to find a man like you you are fantastic you're smart and you know how to do things and that's a rare thing over here in these Virginia mountains. Lol
Love your new video. You’ve inspired me to build a small cabin and it’s 90% done. This firewood shed looks nice and it will be useful for years to come!
Hello Dave 🤗 The wood shed looks so nice - looks like a nice stash of wood 🪵 hope didn't have any after effects from the board hitting you 🥺 love the bench you put by fire pit 🔥 have a great day & take care 🙏🇺🇲
Thanks Dave for even showing the 2×4 falling on you. You are the best
Epic right
My immediate thought was :"What just happened there????!!!" That was something I'd do, not Dave!!!! Glad you're alright 👍 👌 Great video as usual!!!
My favorite part is when Dave hammered a nail in a board

It's the simple things, right? 😆
"Cutting firewood heats you twice, once when you cut it, and once when you burn it."
"We're NOT building a piano, we're building the box the piano came in."
I love those old sayings, Nice wood stove shelter. Thanks Dave.
4 times, "once when you stack it;...and the embers warm your soul"
We used to say that wood warms you 3 times--when you cut it, when you split it, and finally, when you burn it. Splitting wood in the winter is a good way to work up a sweat.
Yep, cut all my firewood in the winter not only because you get a good workout but that it just splits better.
Hey buddy, you need to post more than every month or two. We miss your great videos.
He might be too busy. He'd been doing about 2 videos a month. Honestly I'm happy when he posts anything at all. Whenever it is
I agree with Ephemeral…. Have you any idea how much work just moving the camera around is? And then the editing😅 I’m always happy and grateful for any content the Whipples upload for our enjoyment.
Try to follow his kid building his own cabin in Alaska and his wife's cabin channel is great too.
@@theinfinitymachine9610….and his brother too 😉
Black Spruce is just as cool, and it's his brother.
Posted 48 mins ago and i was like 🙏🏾😂
As always....great video, such an inspiration
You sir are a legend and an absolute massive help and inspiration for the off grid community. Thank you for all of your videos!
We agree.
Be radical, eh.
I can watch this guy build stuff as well as listen to him talk for hours. Thanks for putting these videos out
Still my favorite show on TH-cam.. I love that you do everything by hand.. means so much more in the end when you look at it
Dave,,, I am a 70 year old man with end stage renal failure on dialysis so I spend a lot of time watching TH-cam. I wanted you to know how much I appreciate your videos. I find the simplicity , basic no frills approach to diy projects a real joy to watch. Thanks for sharing.
I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Take care of yourself and I hope you see improvement in your condition. Good luck
I’m just a city guy from California, but I’ve watched every second of videos you have released. I learn something new every video. Thanks Dave for all your work on these.
I appreciate that!
Thanks

Great project Dave, Great reasons for doing the job all by hand and love that all your using is that torpedo level and the reason that's all you have. Hope Micky is Loving life. Had a good laugh at the reason not to be angry at all the rocks lol Amen
Hey Ted !! I hope you Bairds are having a great summer.....we'd love to get together soon
I'm sorry to hear about your cancer....don't give up though.

I love to watch all the Whipple videos. Thanks
I've built several for family and friends over the years... I usually go about 2/3 up the sides w/ planks and have a 2" gap btwn them for air flow.
Hope your head is feeling better.

any builder it happen to all of us lol
Dave, you cannot go wrong with the K.I.S.S. system of engineering! A great build!!!
Love the end product of your labor. I really felt for you when the rail dropped down, I said "OUCH" before you did. I know what you mean about feeling really satisfied and happy about getting wood split and under cover for winter. Well done as always Dave.
Thanks for not editing out the board falling on your head, it’s relatable to folks who have worked alone 😂
Well done, Dave.😊

Love it Dave. Two jobs done at once, woodshed and fire pit!
Oh.... don't forget about the rock garden!
Nice video. The stationary shot montages from time to time are such a good touch. It's enjoyable to watch these. Thanks. All the best!
Wow. You felled that tree precisely between the blue truck/work table and the pink umbrella covered swing. Nice shot! BTW, never try to catch a falling knife, or level. 😵💫
Good luck with that fire. 😨
Your positivity is a balm for me today. Thank you.
Nice work again! A wood shed is on my list, too, after losing ours a few years ago in a wildfire.
So relaxing to watch your videos. Cabin, Out-House, or well driving. Love how you narrate and show the work. keep up the great work.
Thanks 👍
Great Video. Explaining your process made sense. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Always look forward to your videos, what a treat.

Dave, the quote about building the box the piano came in is a great one. I had never heard that before and will never forget it.
Yep, another gem from the Dave Whipple collection! Straight to the point, well explained, and enjoyable to watch! Thanks for this shed build video!
I like to watch your channel especially when you are building something. You make it look so easy and relaxed. You are one of the best builders here in TH-cam.
Great video! your wood shed looks Awesome!!! love your idea of splitting the wood in the middle of a tire. Love watching your videos. :)
Hi Dave, it's always a pleasure to watch and listen to you both. Always. Thanks for another good video. God bless.

I love the way the wood shed turned out! You’re right, it “wood” (hahaha) have made a nice pavilion. I can’t wait to see what Alaskan adventures you and Brooke might have over the coming winter! Blessings ❤️
So enjoyable to watch you do such a useful project..thanks for all your posts.. I enjoy watching you, Brooke and now Mick…❤️❤️❤️
I guess it is now time for a pavilion that matches... grill, picnic table & a lantern.
Thanks for another adventure in the woods. I certainly enjoy seeing all of your projects come to life and your resourcefulness as well!
Mom, Dad, and Son are all building something in different locations. How great is that.
Perfect timing Dave! Heading to the property next weekend and have been procrastinating on this project as well. I've been holding off because I've been undecided on the desgin. Love this shed build, simple strong design, with no hardware to purchase.
Good luck!
I grew up watching Bob Villa on Sunday's.
Now I watch Bush Radical...
Once a month 🤣
One thing is for sure Dave, you always come thru with the 100% best builds. You're work is admirable. Thank you for the outstanding videos!! Love you're family❤!!
If a Wood Shed could be stunning! Well this one is! God Bless You, and Brooke! You are loved by so many! 🙏🕊️🙏
I love watching you work ! You show how basic tools and muscle is all you need! Thanks for an awesome build! Love your woodshed! Perfect for Alaska!
I'm 47 and Brooke is 51
Fantastic video 😎👍
Great video Dave- been missing your Talent- you’re the Man! So informative
Excellent outcome! Thanks
So glad to see you back. Great job on the wood shelter.
Thank you very much!
Good stuff Dave! I guess it's time for me to go out and finish my storage shed! Thanks for the inspiration.
That hammer at 10:10 has some stories to tell!
Wonderful videos, good job. I watch the video then listen to your voice the second time. Soothing voice helps with making a good nap.😂 Brian
Dave thank you, I’ve needed to build a shed just like the one you built. You gave me inspiration. Oh and thumbs up on falling that tree, perfect 👍
Nobody can say Dave is afraid of work. Good job Dave.
Love these videos!
Thank you for showing us how to work like the old timers did it back then,I really enjoyed it.your incentive is a inspiration to us all.great job!!!
Lol
thanks
Love your new video. You’ve inspired me to build a small cabin and it’s 90% done. This firewood shed looks nice and it will be useful for years to come!
You can do it!
It seems most of the family is in the building mood, but that's a good thing when you're window of time is short. It looks great.
Hello Dave 🤗 The wood shed looks so nice - looks like a nice stash of wood 🪵 hope didn't have any after effects from the board hitting you 🥺 love the bench you put by fire pit 🔥 have a great day & take care 🙏🇺🇲
I love watching your son build you can really tell he learned from his parents!!
