  • Norton surface grinder secrets to grind the chuck to finer than 1/40th of a human hair... Grinding a magnetic chuck to real precision needs to take into account the smallest heat generating dimensional changes in metal. This is where a few secrets about grinding will help you get the expected results.You will need to master a few techniques and lots of feel and patience in order to get a properly usable chuck.
    We'll show how important cooling provided by the addition of coolant is when dealing with dimensions that are in the neighborhood of 1/40 of the thickness of a human hair.

    Surface grinder and mag chuck are things I wish I had - unfortunately no space and no funds. Still, nice to see the machine at work... I can dream. Wish still I had kept the small one I once had.
    For sure, temp factors must be critical. Pretty darned good result :)

      Hi Chris,
      You never know about the future, some tool may just follow you home... ;)
      The work done on a surface grinder is very different from normal machining as you get into another world as measuring, those measures are so much more susceptible to outside elements that a good "Feel" for the job is required in order to get decent results...
      Cheers, Pierre

      Hi Lee,
      I like to eat frogs, it's an easy to prepare meal, just a quick skinning and no hair in the bowl...
      When it comes to those small measures it get to the point that even the force of the wind counts... ;)
      Cheers, Pierre

    Looks good. Be careful it looked like some of those passes weren't quite getting off the right side of the mag chuck when you were grinding it in. I also suggest getting the wheel all the way off the part before stepping it over

      Hi,
      This mag chuck is wider than the range of the grinder, so that there is on each side a part that had been milled about 0.040" ( about 1.0 mm) lower in order to allow clearance after the range is reached, maybe this is what you noticed, cause it sounded to me that Philippe was going over enough to clear... ;)

      If you seen the way it works under the carriage you may like to get something in that category, it's an easy to restore model when the bands are worn.

    Just to pass along a tip in case others had the same problem that I had trying to find Chris Anderson's channel. I clicked on your link to it and got the message that "this channel does not exist " so I searched by just his name and got someone else who has the same name but not machine related content. I then went back to this video and found the he had made a comment and clicked on that to finally get his channel. Hope that helps out anyone else who can't find it.

      Hi Dale,
      It's possible that the problem is localized, cause when I click on the link it works fine for me.... So far no other viewers reported the problem, maybe if you try again and if possible give me feedback on a new trial...
      Thanks for taking time to share your experience in a comment, Pierre

    Enjoyed and as you mentioned the metal expands with the heat that is generated from the grinding wheel can change the surface dramatically

      Hi Chuck,
      This is where cooling the part is kinda of essential, without it the process could take forever.
      Also going into that type of precision demands that you "Feel" the machine and the operations... ;)

    Good morning Pierre. This is something that I need to do to my surface grinder. To be honest, I hardly ever use my surface grinder. I've probably spent more time dressing the Chuck and the wheels more than the actual grinding of parts...lol. I use it more to make my own custom tooling than I do for parts that go out to customers.
    I would like to see how you dial in the fence on the back of the Chuck. I haven't done it yet on mine. I could see if you need to grind an accurate bevel on a part by dressing the wheel on a bevel, that if the fence is not parrallel to the wheel the bevel would be off. An example of this would be for a v-block.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marcel,
      The back fence is gonna be made in 2 parts, the top part hardened and advance over the chuck with a space underneath to allow for the parts to clear the roundness and chips in the corner, and if needed it can be ground with the side of the wheel to make it parallel to the X axis.
      What eve the use could be if the tools help making better parts it's a great tool to have in the shop... ;)
      Cheers, Pierre

    Looks like you need to loosen the stops to be able to grind the whole length of the chuck?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  ปีที่แล้ว

      The chuck is oversized, the grinder is built for a 12 inches chuck, the installed chuck is 14 inches wide, so, out of range for the grinder even with the limiting devices removed... 😢 😉👍

      Hi John,
      This grinder is a very good tool, also it's fairly easy to refurbish...
      Working in that class of precision demands so much more care about details than "normal" machining.
      I envy the fact you're in the Summer season... ;)
      Mostly that today we get a real shitty mixture of wind, snow and freezing rain until tomorrow.
      Cheers, Pierre

    One little question, would it be an idea to have also ground the bottom of the chuck, can you be sure it hasn't warped over the years?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris,
      If the bottom is warped more than needing a quick stoning, there is probably something wrong with it, check it out good before undergoing the bottom grind...
      Thanks for comment, Pierre

  • @meocats
    @meocats 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    why didnt you grind the base of the vice too, before grinding the top?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the bottom is in good shape there is no need to do it, a good stoning is excellent as long as there are no protruding dings...
      This is also time consuming and useless in our case...
      Thanks for comment, Pierre

      Hi Brian,
      I caught Philippe grinding with the magnet on and off..... Horror....!!!!!
      But, the good news is that all final grinds were made with the chuck in the activated ( ON ) position as well as all the readings, just like you mention this is important since it really makes a little difference... ;)

    why didn't you spray ethanol instead of lubricant? it evaporates and takes the heat with it

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it cools too much it's not better, all we want is to keep it as close as possible to room temperature, the cool down time between bigger passes just do that easily and gradual. Also alcohol and sparks...???

    how hard is the chuck surface?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The chuck is in the range of cold rolled steel hardness, meaning pretty soft, this is the way it should be in order to not affect surfaces of other metals you need to grind...

      About the voice, I'll try to check it out, when I machine I'm using a close talking directional microphone in order to eliminate the most machine noise as possible, maybe if I hold it a little further from my face it would allow a better mix including more ambient noise to be recorded...
