    One of my favorite scenes, the way he yells at Kevin. "I don't do that Kevin" it's true, he doesn't do anything that you don't want to do. He sets the stage but he doesn't force you, he can't. Kevin took every opportunity and ran with it

    The saddest thing about this scene is the most sadistic words in the movie come from Kevin, not Satan.
    Satan didn't bullshit him for one second in this scene either. He gave Kevin EVERY opportunity with utter honesty to get the fuck off the case. I don't even think it was Satan testing him, I think it was Satan trying to teach his son a lesson in vanity by saying "Hey, you can't win every battle. Some things are more important." Yet... There he is.

    • @Shanethefilmmaker
      @Shanethefilmmaker 8 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      +OpenMawProductions Ya, but he also manipulates ripple effects. He knows the case is gonna go downhill without Kevin, he knows Kevin will read the paper the next day get pissed and go back to work again. The Devil manipulates without ever really having to manipulate.

    • @OpenMawProductions
      @OpenMawProductions 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Sure, and I think in other examples in the movie we see him straight up doing the Devil's work. Like the guy on the subway, or Eddie Barzum.
      But with Kevin, I think he actually cares about him. His son. If needs be, he can make another "Kevin." He can reset the stage for his rise to power. Kevin is special to him, he's trying to show Kevin from his own experience.

    • @Shanethefilmmaker
      @Shanethefilmmaker 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      irishbreakfast
      Actually in one case he did lie. During a scene, where Kevin and Him are taking public transit. He gets into an altercation with some Hispanic-American, where he tells him in Spanish, that his wife is cheating on him with his friend and that he should stab her. When Kevin asked what he said. He told him "I told him if he didn't leave us alone, you were gonna kick his ass." A funny scene, but it pretty much shows the Devil's classic "Father of Lies." quote.

    • @skylightrecords8547
      @skylightrecords8547 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      irishbreakfast I would tend to agree. He is allowed to do whatever he wants from an influential standpoint, but you must make your own decision in your free will. In terms of the subway scene it is the same thing, he is setting the stage through his level of omniscience, another guy not filled with a violent streak would say it wasn't mean't to be. The most basic example of this is the Book of Job, Satan sets the stage and Job is given the choice of going right or left. The vanity is thinking all of our lives are a product of some dumb luck and we are always directing the course of events.

    I'm not a big fan if Keanu, but Al brought out the best in him. This scene was the best of the film.
    The "I don't do that, Kevin" was brilliantly delivered. The best performance, thus far, of Satan or a Demon was this one by Pacino.
    No red man with tail and a pitchfork, but a slithering snake corrupting every law by confusing the mind.

All he did was just listen and then go back to working!!! Mary Ann represents those who are not submitted to the devil but in close relationships with people who are. They can become the scapegoat that pays the cost for wicked success of the person who is !!! The chinese translation, like any translation, is not quite accurate. For example, when Kevin accuses Milton of making the woman lie, he says "I don't do that"....the use in the "present tense" is a contexual subtlety that means that the Devil, Milton doesn't operate in the way Kevin thinks he does...but that meaning is lost in the Chinese translation, because the chinese translation means "I DIDN'T do that" or "I haven't done that" (PAST tense). This is not unusual for nuances to get lost in translation.

    In this moment, Devil knew that Kevin would never leave the case: he has already work hard for it and he was confident they were going to win, so the Devil uses one of his tricks to give Kevin the illusion of two choices, like he can leave now and take care of his loved one, but in reality, almost all the people would choose to go on with the job instead of quitting, because it is hard for a human to give up something he has worked his ass off for and is almost finishing it, it would make us get pissed if we quit and sometimes it can make us depressed, that's why most of us work very hard to achieve our goals and sometimes forget to pass some time with family.
    Devil knows how to use every psychological trick on humans, he knows their weaknesses, and he was testing Kevin here...since Kevin fell prey to this trick, the Devil knew he would be his slave after that

    What’s interesting is when he chooses the case over his wife, Pacino looked genuinely disappointed. It was as if he was telling him, before this gets to the point of no return, choose love. To love is to be free. The only way out in the end was for him to kill himself and begin again. Had he chosen love, reality completely changes.

      sorry but entrapment is not free will. nor is dwindling the choices down to rocks and hard places. that is the trick he is selling you all on, sadly. and most people identify and have sympathy for the devil through the use of "do as thou wilt" under that guise, pride like vanity, can reign supreme in the individual. we must all face this in ourselves. some overcome it while others do not. this is the battle between good and evil. both sides make their case "in the court of life" and while one side has more toys, the other side has more discipline and restraint. if we are serving ourselves as true supreme, then we will always choose one side over the other. if we listen to ourselves and know that it is connected to all of existence and the possibilities in existence, we serve something called "truth, accuracy, and honesty" this is something that serves us, so it goes round and round each time it is served. to serve truth is to serve the whole, which we are included in. and of course we have chosen a side in doing this, whether we know it or not. many things can be true at the same time, but that is in our categorization of things, not the thing itself. if we serve truth, accuracy and honesty and we are not those things, we become those those things and that serves us as well, even though it didnt seem to start out serving ourselves.... this is how we defeat the devil within. by choosing to serve something other than our first response ego/superego vanity is an extension of pride, like he says "self love"

    The undeniable tragedy of the downfall of the human soul, is when even the Devil himself points out to us, our own choices that WE made, and as to how it led to our very own demise! The Devil is, admittedly, a liar, but he also has his way of telling us the truth, when he points out to us that we indeed made the choice to do something evil. He doesn't make us sin, no...he makes the suggestion of evil, in it's many forms, to us. However, he can't FORCE us to sin. We make the choice between right and wrong ourselves! You could argue that the Devil has his own sense of justice. If we fall into the trap of doing what he suggests to us, he owns us, and will suggest more and more evil to us. Which, much more often than not, leads us to our own damnation! Meanwhile, the Devil is laughing at us human fools for being stupid enough to damn our own souls! Inwardly, he hates us, and he hates God. He'll do everything in his power to separate us from God, but ultimately the choice is ours, as to whether to listen to him, or not.

      @@sonamtashi7706 We'll have to agree to disagree. No disrespect intended towards you. Nowhere in the Bible, or any other Writing, do you find that Satan forces us to do what he wants us to do. He can manipulate...but ultimately, the choice is ours, as to whether we do what he wants us to do, or resist, and say no.
      What you need to understand, is that he'll mix just enough truth in his deception, to entice you to partake of his offer, or refuse.

    I share the same problem as Kevin, even though I'm not an Advocate but a Civic Economist. If I set a goal, I have to reach it no matter what. I have to win and I can't stand losing. This sin has had a hold on me all my life and even though I mostly try to stay humble, it just keeps coming back, fueling me up and setting myself on fire. It's a curse and a gift but mostly a curse if I don't win because I become impossible to deal with.

    This is the ultimate tipping point of the movie. The meaning of this movie is the Sins of the Father should not pass to the child. Milton may have been The Devil BUT He didn't want his Son to be like him. BUT He wanted him to understand. The entire movie never really happened. it ain't time travel at the end. The Devil is giving Kevin a Glimpse of where this road leads him.

    The way this movie ends... There's no way that Milton would have won. Especially after the line where he mimics the reporter.
    "It was a good run Kev, had to close out sometime, nobody wins em all."
    After that, you knew Kevin put it together that Milton was disguised as the reporter and he would never have gone near him after that.
    Not even Mary Ann would have been able to convince him otherwise.

      Solar Reaper Yet, at the end of the day Satan didn't do anything except set the stage and set Kevin loose. It was Kevin who choose to push ahead with the case knowing the guy was guilty, it was his choice to let the molesting piece of shit teacher go free, having seeing how he was rubbing the table while the girl was recounting her experience. Kevin WANTED to win, it was always about his career, his desire to win. Yes, Satan messed around with Mary Ann, torturing her into insanity. Thats just his average sunday. But at the end of the day, it was always Kevins choice. Kevin could have taken her and gone home. He could have been with her at the party, but left her after promising her to stay with her. • @True38
      @True38 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@otisbeck5327 That is so dumb and your Psychologist clearly does not know what he or she is talking about. ALL humans operate in self-interest. What, you think people really care or something? Oh, they care alright when it's in THEIR self-interest. Nobody gives a flying fuck about kids starving to death in South-Africa every day, but they sure as hell care when some of their favorite actor or singer dies. And those very people who died got where they were because of vanity. So in a sense, this sin pretty much rules our everyday lives, especially now with social media. So the more you embrace this sin and become famous or something, the more people will "care" about you when you leave this earth.
