If I make this soup and leave out the doughboys she would complain......lol......Enjoy to the fullest and we have lot's of delicious soup recipes and a dessert with doughboys called blueberry doughboy dessert!!!! th-cam.com/video/9NX5_Th5O74/w-d-xo.htmlsi=eWxLKVKVOOU-8oiR Enjoy Bonita

    OMG Bonita, this brings a rush of memories! My husband graduated from MUN in the early 90's and I was a NICU nurse at the Janeway. We were newlyweds at the time. Being cfa'a, Newfoundland pea soup became an all-time favorite. I didn't know how to make my own though. One day, my friend had a couple of her old aunties visiting from out around the bay. I figured I could get some pointers from them on making pea soup. I asked them for a receipe and they just looked at each other and had a good old laugh! "There's no receipe for pea soup. You just make it" After a bit of coaxing I managed to get a rudimentary outline of what I needed to do. First pot I attempted needed to be thrown out! I used salt beef and didn't realize that you had to pre boil it and change the water. It was sooo salty!! Second pot was much better. I've been making it ever since. Now I use pickled pork hawks though. Sure wish I'd had your instruction back then. Love your channel and love your accent. We live in Nova Scotia now but still miss our years in St John's when things were much simpler for us. So much of what you cook is similar to my PEI upbringing. Thanks for all your down home advice.

    Every Newfoundland family has their own way of making pea soup, our family used whole peas, no celery, no ham, and potatoes were full size. Doughboys can be "dunch" ( tough and soggy if batter overworked) or right fluffy if done right. Your pea soup looks some good! You should have a tv show my dear, on CBC or NTV, so come from always can learn the local foods.

    This pea soup looks great, I grew up with it in Newfoundland and miss it now that I live far away. I can't wait to try it. Just a note for your recipes, what I grew up calling just "turnip" was actually rutabaga turnip, and I discovered this the hard way when I first moved to the mainland and tried cooking a jigs dinner with a mainland "turnip" (white turnip is quite bitter and doesn't taste as good as the yellow rutabaga does). Keep up the good work with your TH-cam videos!

    I've made pea soup for years using a ham bone or ham hocks. The only vegetable I ever added was chopped onion. Everybody loved my soup but now I'll have to try it with the additional vegetables. Never thought of putting dumplings in the soup, I make turkey and dumplings with turkey legs or chicken and dumplings. I do add carrots and celery to those dishes. I'm really not a good cook, I just like to read recipes.

    Hello Bonita thank you so much for posting Newfoundland recipes, I'm a westerner but live near a lot of "newfies" and like their traditional food.
    I have two questions #1 can I use pickled pork riblets instead of the beef and ham, and do I need to soak and drain that to get some of the salt off? And #2 how long is the soup good for in the fridge after it's been sealed in the bottles (jars) ?

    • @bonitaskitchen
      @bonitaskitchen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Treasure Cooper Hi and thank you for your message and questions, I'm glad you are enjoying our traditional recipes. To answer your first question yes you can use pickled pork ribs and yes you will need to soak for at less 4 hours or put then in the cold water in the morning and drain the water off after work and start the boiling first with the pork for about half hour then add the peas. Next question, bottle the hot soup and your are sure it will seal and the let it cool totally, label and date and they will be good in the fridge for 3 to 4 weeks. I hope that helps and thank you once again for visiting my channel. Enjoy Bonita

    are dough boys the east coast version of dumplings!
    and can a person use rutabaga in place of turnup??

    • @bonitaskitchen
      @bonitaskitchen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes and yes! Of course rutabaga is what we used in this tasty soup but here in Newfoundland and Labrador we call them turnips. Of course we know the difference but that's what we grow up with knowing. The dough boys is the same as dumplings but we call them dough boys....:) Thank you so much for stopping by and enjoy our soup recipe and all our recipes to the fullest. :) Bonita

      Hi Roberta: I'm thinking you live in the states, because when we were in florida I couldn't get yellow split peas and I bought the green and they taste the same. We love peas soup in our family, green or yellow it don't matter. In Newfoundland Canada we can get both. This is a lovely recipe and the dough boys are so good. I hope that helps. Bonita

    I just found your channel while researching Duff recipes. I was hoping to try your soup recipe this week--we are helping my mother in law with her travel club next weekend, showing pictures of our trip to Newfoundland, and making a couple of NL recipes to share. The group is vegetarian, and I'm sure the salt beef and ham adds delicious flavor, but is there a way to make it vegetarian and still tasty? How much salt would you recommend adding in?

    • @bonitaskitchen
      @bonitaskitchen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kate: Thank you for your message and for visiting my channel, just checking first to see if you are going to make the full bag of split yellow peas. If so use vegetable broth and about 1/2 teaspoon or more of sea salt to the broth or stock in your boiler with your split peas. Building flavours without using meat of any type, also after your peas soup is almost done chop up some of the celery leaves and parsley to put over the top and stir in with the peas soup. This will taste so good, enjoy to the fullest and don't forget to subscribe so you can get a notification each time we post a new video. :) Bonita

    • @bonitaskitchen
      @bonitaskitchen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No but they are two similar beefs, one is salted with course salt and the other got peppercorns and more seasonings. If you don't have access to salted beef use a ham bone of pieces of ham. Enjoy Bonita

      Hi Howard: Thank you for your message and for visiting my channel, I drain the soaked water off the peas because you don't need that extra starch. My Mom would always say soaking your peas over night takes away some of the gas effect it makes afterwards. :) I hope this answers your question and you make this delicious peas soup with doughboys, it is a lovely soup.
