I completely agree with this video. I walked on to a D1 team last year and was never asked to travel. I had to struggle and compete against my teammates to earn a conference spot. I was the only one on my team to make the finals in my event the 400hurdles and we ended up winning the America East Conference. This along with my big improvements in the offseason I'm finally getting positive attention from my coaches! If you are willing to work your ass off, have a chip on your shoulder, and do the things(recover super hard) that everyone else isn't willing to do you can get the attention you want.

I have the same story although I competed with one of the best Division 3 colleges in the nation. I definitely had a chip on my shoulder😆, worked harder than anyone else and wasn’t going to let anyone tell me what I couldn’t do. It actually motivated me to do even more. I finished 10x All American in track (mid distance 800/1500) and 1x in cross-country that I never wanted to do but my coach told me I’d be competing with the top 7 after winning a 2 mile time trial.

If you have a choice to go somewhere that wants you then you should go there. If however nobody wants you because you didn't perform in HS because of injuries or bad grades, and you truly believe you have what it takes then I think being a walk-on is fine. Treat your first year like a job interview to show what you can do. You may not travel, but you will be doing the same workouts as the top performers on the team do.

Thank you for your comment. The times do appear to have gotten faster in the past decade, but some of the athletes on the performance list will not run if they are focusing on the 200 or 400, so the numbers can fluctuate in my experience.
