    This is one of my very first videos so thank you for understanding that I am learning how to shoot and edit. Yep! Music was loud as it played on my desktop audio. It is what it is in this video. Enjoy the video and stay tuned for another video on these tiles. New batches and use ideas coming soon.

    Such a fun and creative way to upcycle. Based on the earlier comments from your viewers, you are brand new at sharing your art on YT. Just wanted to let you know, the subject matter was so good (exciting, really) it didn't matter to me about the music or the tempo of your presentation. Good enough to be only the second one to be saved in my WOW file of artistic inspiration. Keep at it, lean into improving your video presence each new time, but Do Not let any comments (good or bad) cause you to stop. I am excited for you!!

    Great video and so utterly creative! But I must admit, I did “fast forward” a lot of the chit chat and just watched the “action” parts! Lol! Your voice is great, just keep in mind less is more. The tiles are so amazing that I want to make like 200 and ornament my kitchen wall- put them amongst the bigger tiles, creating a cute pattern with them!! You got my creative juices flowing!!! And I love you for it!!🤗❤️🙏 More, please!!😁

    Very nice project really liked it and will practice. But the music is so hipnotizing and video is way to long. Nevertheless I love the mosaics.

    of course ear rings come to mind, dangling ear rings, some chained together. And putting tiny dried flowers between the two plastic pieces come to mind as well. Do the painting and all, then drop some very small dried flowers onto the wet paint. Also using old finger nail polish in between the plastic comes to mind too. Since you are melting the plastic together, I was thinking of perhaps using some fine copper wire up in one corner or something like that. I like your stamping technique. Great video and thank you for sharing. Peace to you your family and your pets. You know, heck...even wind chimes would work.

      I was thinking I could leave the CD whole, two together back to back, do the melt and use them in my CD curtain where CD are hung from wire to make a curtain effect or use them in my whirling collection ! Love this ! 😍

And the tiles are just beautiful. This is a lovely chilled out relaxing video to watch - thanks for taking time to explain everything so well.

      Hello Daryl, thank you. I do feel like I need to create daily. I have always been a creating sort of maker type but had not always created each day. Once I focused on creating something each day, even a doodle or a brainstorm, It inspired me to created something that wasn't here yesterday everyday. I hope your new year brings many more opportunities to make beautiful things.

    Thank you for the video. I hate to be the odd one out, but I liked the music. It was soothing to me. Perhaps because I taught for 30 plus years, I could hear you around/in spite of the music. I appreciated your telling us all the steps, as I am new to the process you are demonstrating. Thank you

      Me too. In my day we called this new age music. I'm not sure what it's called now. am surprised how many people have criticized this video even if they feel it is constructive. I think some of these people could have gotten their message across in a polite way. This young lady is GIVING us her time for free. You can fast forward through all those parts you felt were unnecessary Also, remember we all learn at different levels. Some viewers may appreciate all the CHIT CHAT as some viewers called it. To each their own but give this young lady the respect she deserves for sharing and if you have your own great TH-cam channel and want to share how you can help her do better then message her in private or ask her if she wants your critique.

      Thank you Sandy Poteet. Most my family were/are teachers. I was the odd one out and went into nursing. Thank you for the 30 plus years of inspiring people to want to learn. Learning new things is what my channel is all about. This is a really fun project to do. It's not a quick one, but taking the time to explain I thought was important for not only safety reasons but for the outcome. The music was unintentional as it is but I do enjoy it also. I appreciate your comments and kindness.

      I was going to say the same thing.....less chattering. Constructive criticism is not always hateful rhetoric just something to help along the way. I can't tell you how many videos I've stopped because people were chattering and rambling. I understand it is the FIRST video and I wish her the best of luck....but too much chattering is a turn off.

I bet they can't even make a video themselves, and are happy you didn't charge them anything for sharing this great idea :) I watched it twice, ffed where I thought I know what you do :) I must have missed the part where you use the mica powder.. what did you do with that?

    • @MugsyMakes
      @MugsyMakes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Ellie. Thank you for the kind comments and for the love. I will keep doing me, and keep sharing it with you all on my channel.I've got so many things to share with you all. The mica powder I used on top of the paint I put on the tile then squished together. If you mix the powder into the paint it mutes the glimmer. If you put it on top of the paint, it will melt into the cd and stay 'afloat ' the paint. So I just dusted the tile with the mica powder with a fluffy makeup brush tapping it over the wet paint on the tile. then placed the top cd tile on top and squashed then dried then melted. Let me know when you make these, I want to see what you all create. Again Ellie, thank you. I appreciate you watching and commenting.

    I love this idea! When I cut mine, I had the grid drawn out, then stamp inked. To cut, I used a rubber backed ruler and an Olfa snap blade knife. I made 8 scores on both sides of the cd's, and then they just snapped off cleanly. Really saved my thumb knuckle, because I was no longer using scissors. Your video gave me different ideas as far as shapes. I watch different videos, and then I get ideas to do similar, yet very different things. Thank you for posting this!

    • @MugsyMakes
      @MugsyMakes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Ooh I was wondering about scoring them. I had one sore thumb knuckle the first time I did this project. Thank you for the info. I would love to see what you come up with.

      I have been playing with the temps in my toaster oven, but I've also been painting and baking whole cd's, and then taking smaller cut pieces to hang from the bottom. I'm a perfectionist, so when I get it the way I want it, I'll show you. When I do use scissors, I've been using Fisker's original multia media scissors.

    I love what you've done here, and I very much applaud your recycling efforts, but those efforts are rather negated by the fact that you're using more plastic as disposable palettes. Please consider using a glass dish or something, instead of the throw away contact paper. Acrylic paints will soak right off of a glass or ceramic dish with some warm water. If you don't have the time (or energy) to clean up right away it's still an easy clean up once things are dry. sometimes they'll even peel right off without soaking. I hope you consider trying out an alternate palette... I personally love using an old turntable plate from a junked microwave! ;) Again, your work is BEAUTIFUL - and thank you very much for sharing your technique. I do appreciate it!
    **Edit** I hope I don't sound too critical... I was aMAzed at your idea to use the sticky tape with the holographic film as other things, and to smear the paint in your journal... I just thought you could appreciate my thoughts on being even greener. I really do like this video!

      If she used a glass plate or micro base dish then she won't be able to smear her journal page, so yes you are too critical. Go more green? If you use more that 4 squares to wipe after voiding you are not going green...
      I liked the entire thing. I know nothing about this & seeing the entire process (including the choices of what paints you put together) and the outcome of those mixes was wonderful. My 17 year old may be very interested in this. I'm forwarding her to your site.

    • @MugsyMakes
      @MugsyMakes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ooooh I love love this idea. I was throwing around this with the husband and we thought of a few things we want to try. I am thinking you could mount the tiles onto a mesh that way grouting would be easier. Also/ot the backsplash could be created on a thin board that is attached to the wall. You could use velcro on the few tiles that you would need to put screws into the wall to anchor the board. That way you can pull the velcro tiles up in the corners and can remove the backsplash if needed. So many ideas. I do hope to see your finished backsplash. Thank you for watching and commenting.

    I'm like you...I need to be crafting everyday, especially since I am now mostly bed ridden. I have discovered that a piece of plywood makes for a good work surface in my king-size bed, lol. About these tiles, first of all may I say GENIUS! I haven't tried making any yet, but as I watched you I got to wondering how it might be possible to insert photographs in-between. Perhaps wet the back of the photo and carefully scrape away the paper, leaving just the photo film with the image? Another idea I am wondering about...I am envisioning linking these tiles with jewelry jump rings thus creating a bracelet. So how to create the small holes for the rings to go through would be the challenge. So there you have it, a couple of ideas to ponder. Thank you very much for taking the time to share your creativity with us. Good luck in 2018!

      Hi. First off love the name. Thank you for subscribing and commenting. I am doing a follow up video and have put these ideas to the test. The video is still a few weeks out, but here's the low down. I succeeded in putting a piece of paper in between the tiles after a few tries. You can read the word clearly enough. I could not get a transfer to look any good so no on the one. As far as linking these, yes I was able to both punch a hole and to lay jewelry wire in the tile. The punching of the hole was done with a heavy duty punch I use for book binding. It punched great holes but they did crack and split. I found that remelting the tiles the splits fused again.
      Being mostly bedridden has to put a slow down on creating. I've had some times where my bed became my hub because of health issues and I know first hand how awesome a board can become an awesome bed table. I do hope you are doing more creating and having some relief.

      I got my nickname from one of my nieces a long time ago, when she was little. To this day I have no idea why she came up with it and now she doesn't remember, lol, but over the years it's just kinda stuck with me.
      My hubs made a suggestion on making the holes in the tiles. A small drill bit...so danged simple, eh? LOL!!! Great chatting with you and I look forward to your next video. Take care!!

      Hello Martine, Thank you. Yes they do take patience. I've done a few batches now and each time I do a little more then last one so they add up. I agree these would make great buttons. I really want to be able to find a way to cut different uniform shapes like circles. I've done some free hand cutting and it's not the easiest thing to do. I did though successfully make some with holes with a heavy duty hole puncher, a Cropadile I believe. Although some of the finished tiles did crack or split in the process I was able to reheat and fuse the cracks. I have another video on some new processes I am currently working on and go over in more detail. In the meantime if you have any questions on the project feel free to ask. Have a great rest of your week.

    HELLO new subbie. first time I ever watched anything about making tiles loved your turtorial. What temp for a oven not a toaster oven. @MugsyMakes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and welcome Lori. I love your ideas and excitement. I am working on some new batches of these tiles and a follow up video with new tips and uses. Stay tuned. Yes Permanent markers work. I've used sharpies to doodle on some. The image distorts in the melting process but as you can tell with the stamped image you can still see it. Also the marker will make more fumes so I ventilate well. I have a new oven now and my temps have been adjusted down to 365 fahrenheit to 380 fahrenheit. If you don't use paint you will want some type of adhesive in between the tiles so they don't slide while melting. Never be sorry for questions. I love questions they lead to experimenting and new ideas. Have a great week.

    One could glue sheets of wrapping paper, post cards, images cut from magazines, napkins, etc. on the cd and let dry. Moisten with water and rub off the paper leaving the image. Then finish as you showed us.

The bubbles on on some of your tiles look cool but I don’t want any bubbles in my tiles because I want to use them for a mosaic. Love this! I baked my first ones today. It was a “use what’s on hand” scenario though. The tray for the toaster oven wasn’t flat so I tried layers of foil on the rack. This wasn’t a good idea. I also think I had the rack too low. I also tried adding glitter to some of them. Has anyone else tried this? If so - how did it work out for you. I am very excited about this and will continue working on getting the kinks out. Thank you so much for this video!!

Most people probably shut you down after a few minutes. Would have been just fine if you painted one and let us guess that you did the rest. Same thing with every step. Some people were born to criticize others just because they haven't thought of this idea. Keep up the good work misses. I did have one question; Did you say allow the paint to dry completely before you place the tiles into your toaster oven? Maybe you mentioned it already in your video, but I have an option to watch it again. I just love this idea and you just sparked another idea for me on what to do with the scotch packaging tape after you used it to remove the foil from the an old CD. I saw that same idea of removing the foil from the old CDs done by a gentleman from India. He painted Mandala designs on the old cd's.

    Ever thought of making Buttons of these tiles? Either pre-Drill the Button Holes in the CDs in the center of the squares before you even cut them apart using a template so the holes will line up evenly once you stack the 2 cut squares. Another option is drill the button holes after you melted the tiles. Everything else to do to create the tiles remains the same They will make nice tile buttons.

    • @MugsyMakes
      @MugsyMakes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andrea these are great ideas. I will give them a try next time I make a batch of tiles. Drilling holes may be the best idea. I punched some with a heavy duty punch, but they cracked. Although setting them back into the oven to reseal around the cracks worked to make them sturdy again. Love your ideas new friend!

    • @MugsyMakes
      @MugsyMakes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Vivian thank you for the comment and question. I am currently using a oven to do a batch of trial tiles and yes you can use a oven as long as you ventilate well, put pets in another area, and adjust your time and temperature. Honestly I have tried a few methods and each stove I have used has been notably different with melt temp and time. Right now in a newer oven I can achieve melt point at a much lower temp then in my previous toaster oven. Last batch melted at 280 fahrenheit. I even turned it up higher because I though for sure that was too low but it was obvious that was too hot. I have gotten a much nicer, smoother tile with lower temperature and a long melt time up to an hour. Also a plus is the polycarbonate that the CD is made of is in it's melt range and I notice very little smell. Of course not meaning you should not ventilate. ( I really wouldn't want anyone not to take precautions and I like overkill on safety ) Again thank you for watching and I am happy to hear you plan on making in the future. I would love to see what you make. Have a great rest of your week.

    Do you think that drying them on their own before melting in oven makes a big difference? I've made these and had a heck of a time getting them melted but until your video I wasn't positive of the temp to bake them on. But I know I am one of those impatient people and do them and put them in the oven the same time. Yours are very pretty. Mine aren's as "melted" looking They either are very melted like into a puddle or the sides aren't totally sealed.
    I have to find my and show a pic sometime and maybe you tell me what the problem is.

    • @MugsyMakes
      @MugsyMakes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lori /wave I just finished a test on this exact question "Do you think that drying them on their own before melting in oven makes a big difference?" And in short, yes. I did the melt process on some freshly painted tiles, a day of drying tiles, larger pieces and one cd that after weeks in dry time still managed to be wet and bubble up like crazy. I think the dry time is important for a clearer tile. I also tired alternative ways of drying and found that using a dehydrator can dry the tiles over night. I now have a craft dehydrator to use in my art because that revelation of using it has saved me time for sure. Also I've found that ovens vary temperature a lot. A lot a lot. I was able to melt a more recent batch at 280 fahrenheit at a longer time of almost an hour. I feel that the slower longer melt may be the way to go from now on. The tiles are coming out clean with flatter surfaces. I would be happy to see how yours turned out

    Girls, here's a tip: want revenge on that old boyfriend? Rip the film off his CDs with packaging tape.

    I do a lot of painting and crafting, and for my paint pallets, I like to use the Styrofoam meat trays from meats that I buy at the grocery. I just wash them with dish soap just like I do when washing dishes. The great thing about using the Styrofoam meat trays, is that you can keep reusing them over and over until they fall apart and it's time to put in the recycle bin. If you don't eat meat; ask your meat eating friends to save them for you. I re-wash them after every use with paint.

    Just watched your video. These tiles are very pretty but I am getting no sound and no verbal instruction. Would really like to make these. Darn.

    I'm sorry you seem very nice but you speak very slow, move slow and made worse by that hypnotic sleep music in the background.

    Great video lots of detail. Love the music, so peaceful. I remember doing shrink wrap jewellery years ago but they don't use the same plastic in packaging these days. This will be much better. Thanks.
