    • @jwstek

      Aside from cutting it to my desired length, no prep whatsoever.

    • @jwstek
      @jwstek  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      However, I will say that when I come across a piece that’s particularly nasty with grease I have been known to soak a length overnight in kerosene just to play it safe. This piece though came from an entire spool I bought new.

    • @jwstek
      @jwstek  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fryscountrylifechannel4437 no, I think it would oxidize the steel and make welding a real pain in the ass if not impossible!

      JW I wish I did know the name of it but I don't
      I jumped on e-bay a while back looking at old
      body and fender hammers and it had three of them for sale , but were beyond what I wanted to pay , , .. JW .. the best thing for making a hollow grind on a blade when you don't have a belt grinder . ( 2) 1.1/2 Ball bearings set up on what they call a black smiths helper they line up on one another , and for a 3.5 to 4" skinning blade or drop point ,, can come out damn nice , need a slot where you can slide the hot blade behind the bearings and get your edge started where you want it .. better than trying to beat one out
      on the with a ball peen on an anvil .. ( Tip of the day )

    • @FrostJarl
      @FrostJarl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +miloš benčič I would never use galvanized steel for smithing, the zinc coating on the steel will release toxic fumes when heated.

      @JStekervetz1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry Dusty, don't know how I missed this.. oh wait, my daughter had just been born and through our life into blissful chaos for a few days! Anyway, yes, that's just straight 20 mule team borax, nothing special, fresh out of the box.

    • @Troublemasta
      @Troublemasta 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      J Stekervetz As far as my knowledge goes Borax is not something you want to have skin contact with......ever.....just a heads up. Just do a quick google search on it.....

    • @JStekervetz1
      @JStekervetz1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yorozuya it's sodium tetraborate not to be confused with boric acid. While it can be a mild skin irritant for some, its also used in shampoo and more commonly in laundry products, which incidentally it is sold as in the form I use. I'm personally calloused to hell and have never had any issues with it in the 20+ years I've been smithing. That being said, I'm sure there are people who would be irritated by it and I would recommend a spoon of some sort for anyone else. On a side note, the structure of the mineral itself is a major irritant to fleas and will actually shred their exoskeleton causing them to die - a good way to get them out of furniture I'm told.. (Just another use) :)

    • @Troublemasta
      @Troublemasta 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      J Stekervetz "revised classification of borax as toxic for reproduction category 1B under the CLP Regulations." Taken from the wikipedia page. It can't go through skin easily BUT any cuts will make it enter your body..........inhaling it is probably bad too....Also it apparently won't buildup inside the body which makes it quite safe. So here my revised advice: Don't do it when you have any cuts on your hand.....(and sorry for barking before actually knowing about it :D) :P

    • @JStekervetz1
      @JStekervetz1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yorozuya you'll get the same issues with another alkaline powder known as table salt. :)

    the audio on this is the only complaint i have. you speak too quietly, and the sounds of the tools drown you out.
    and you're narrating this in post.
    otherwise totally enjoyable.

  • @robertwinkel9209

    Why do you not wear safety glasses?

    • @JStekervetz1
      @JStekervetz1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert Winkel There's two main reasons for this in this video. A) Lighting for shooting, I couldn't see beyond the glare with my current glasses at the time. B) I cut my teeth doing this as historical demonstrations where anachronisms, such as a face shield, earmuffs or even a handy pair of vice grips were severely forbidden. I've always worked slower, more controlled and at a rather large distance from the anvil. Unless I'm giving tiny correction taps to nudge a piece one way or another, my head never goes near a certain area around the anvil and certainly not over it. It's a little hard to see that with the camera angle, it's a little deceiving. But my safety glasses do make an appearance at about 13:32 when I'm grinding. With powertools it doesn't matter how you've been trained or how cautious you are, something is going to go wrong, it's just a matter of when.
