- This week on Rangeless we are celebrating the Thai New Year by participating in the annual water festival of Songkran, in Bangkok, Thailand.
What is Songkran?
Songkran is Thailand's most famous festival. An important event on the Buddhist calendar, this water festival marks the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year.
Why are there water fights during Songkran?
What began as a tradition of the Songkran festival to sprinkle water on the hands of elders, in a symbol of cleansing and reverence to mark the new year, has evolved into huge water fights that draw tourists from across the world.
Songkran is a three day festival the takes places all over Thailand. Some of the busiest places are Bangkok, Phuket, and Chang Mai but there are celebrations throughout the country with the water fights lasting the whole month.
We loved partaking in the festival and would encourage anyone planning a trip to Thailand to try and get there for this. Songkran takes place for the three days following the first full moon in April. But double check by googling, the dates will pop right up.
Do plan early and book your accommodation in advance because things book out with both international and domestic tourist coming into the city to celebrate.

We had so much fun!
I recommend that if you want to play aggressively. Large diving goggles and earplugs
It protects against water from all directions.
That would have been a good idea! There was a couple times we got sprayed in the ears and eyes and it hurts and could be dangerous some of the bigger sprayers are very powerful!
