  • Checking lifter bore heights and checking the large chamfer in the tops of the non roller 304 lifter bores. The crane hydraulic roller lifters are approximately 0.050" shorter than the lunati lifters, but on some blocks with deep chamfers, bronze bushing and lifter true may still be required for the conversion with off the shelf CRANE hydraulic roller cams.

After seeing this I am glad I stayed with a flat tappet cam. Had no idea you can't do a straight swap without potential issues. But if I do another build I'll look for a roller block or get the thing sleeved when the other machine work is done. Thanks for the vid!

No problem. Flat tappet cams can save expense, but since the governments are reducing the amount of zinc allowed in engine oils, its becoming a serious issue. Zinc is one of the key players in flat tappet lobe and lifter life. The other issues are lifter face profiles, lobe profiles, and quality of materials. In my opinion, they are hit and miss. Ive got and seen old cams that have run 20 years in engines and look new. They dont make them like they used to. Keep in mind the lifters MUST rotate to live. You have to check this on a build these days by rotating the cam by hand and checking mark up on each lifter, lobe, and lifter bore.
So yes, roller cam is expensive, but cheaper for a professional workshop than pulling the engine or cam out after 20 minutes running for a warranty job on a flat tappet cam.
Sorry to those below who have commented and i havent replied.

I've been researching roller cam retrofits, and this is the first time I've heard this issue mentioned so thank you for pointing it out. I have a roller short block Chevy 350 that needs rebuilt and a 207 350 non roller block freshly rebuilt that I'm trying to decide which to put my 062 Vortec heads on to go in my 1981 C30. Looks like I'll be rebuilding the roller block.... dammit.

You must be using LUNATI 72334 Pontiac V8 Retro Fit Hyd Roller Lifters,..Apparently they are the Holden VS series 3 & the VT series lifters but with are different code,..Same seat height etc

How big do you drill the oil feed holes in the bushings ?

Great video, very informative. Quick question, can I use a roller cam and lifter package designated for a pre VT in a VT block? Or do I need to get a VT specific roller cam and lifter package?

Top video mate, I have always wondered why rollers cant fit in to a nonroller block. thinking back to when i had a 5ltr VS ute I wish i did see this video back then, i do much prefer a bronzed lifter bore anyway.

hi Lachy, i think crane have done a shorter lifter now, and so have lunati, so my video is becoming obsolete but still worth checking these things in any build

Hi mate where did you get the machining done for the roller cam?

Hi mate what are the specs on the cam ? I've just installed a 888271 roller hydraulic with morel roller lifters pretty much identical to the lunati , the cam has .365 on intake lobe and .371 on ex installed in a non roller vr block unsleeved with no unmasking issues dial indicator shows up to .400 before any issues .

Jeremy Paynter, hi mate. Yes I believe you. Like I said in the video some blocks are ok, some not. It's just got to be checked. I'll dig up the cam specs on that cam I used. Reduced base circle can help this but I prefer std base circle for reduced side loads on lifters.
I'm doing a red 308 ATM that needed lifter bushing.
