My wife and I found some in the woods end of August. She cut some up into strips, seasoned it and fried it in butter. I came out like scrambled eggs and was delicious. If you have vegan friends, they'll really get a kick out of it. We were so stoked to find 10 pounds of free food just sitting by the trail.
My favorite way to cook giant puffballs is to cut them in big slabs, about twice as thick as you've done, and then drege them in beaten eggs and flour, and then cook them slowly in butter in a cast iron skillet. A big puffball steak! Yours look pretty good, too! Giant puffballs are pretty unmistakable, especially at the giant sizes. But if the insides have started turning yellow, they are too old. Thanks for featuring a really special part of autumn!
I found my first Puff ball! It was smaller and when I broke it open it looked like it was already spoiling - happy to have found it but also happy to leave it to go back into the soil ♡
Today is June 17th and I picked a giant puffball mushroom at a friend's house and will cook some of it up for breakfast tomorrow with garlic and eggs. Yum!
Tim, this is probably this best video on YT on how to cook giant puffballs (exactly as my dear mom did). Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the delicious GIANT PUFFBALL!
You can also cut the giant puffballs into slices with the skin and freeze them. The taste and consistency with the skin are better preserved. greetings from Germany
This is such a good video. I seen these in the woods, and my mom did too. We searched for some videos, used this one, and it came out sooo good. Thanks for the great idea Tim!
Thank you for this wonderful video. I recently found some puff balls and fried them in olive oil and butter. It was the best egg white substitute ever! My wife and son waited 24 hours to see if there where any side effects😅🤣🤣😅.
Hey Tim, Hurricane Helene brought us four days and four inches of rain here in S.E. Indiana after a bit of a drought. Went on a walkabout this morning looking to see what mushrooms might have popped up. Found a few giant puffballs not far from the house. I hurried home to do a search online and there you are! No need to look further. Thanks!
We have these mushrooms all over the place ib front of our house! We just pulled a few and I'm so happy to hear we can eat them! (Better than my husband running them over with the lawn mower! LOL)
This was a great vid. I love how you wanted to surprise your lady! Awesome. I found smaller ones- is it okay to pick them small? I halved them and they were like hot marshmallows.
When i was in primary school, these were all over the play field back in the 80s after it rains, we use to pick them up and stone each other with it lol. Its plentiful in Jamaica
Thank You for sharing!...this is The Best video I’ve seen on these lovely Puffballs yet!..and I’ve seen a lot!...GOD bless You and Yours in JESUS name!
When they have a little bit of dirt on them how do you get that off you Pat it with a wet towel or just slightly rinse that section it's a great video by the way I appreciate you
On your opening theme (Love your theme) when you say “try some food you’ve never tried before” I use to hunt those mushrooms with an old girlfriend but could never find them. We live in Carter County Kentucky. When is the best time to hunt those mushrooms
Nature is just overwhelming sometimes. The older I get the more amazed I am by the sheer diversity of life. And we get hung up on a few races and cultures? It's laughable and sad at the same time.
There are plenty of ways to educate yourself. When you spend the time to key out particular parts of the mushroom, and understand the varieties, it will become very clear. The awards are amazing. Next week we include a chicken of the woods mushroom with our meal. It was outstanding. If you know what to look for, you cannot make a mistake. Diligence and research is worth the effort.

Yup....we are from the south. No apology necessary. Normally I don't reply to people who don't use their real name.

As they start to deteriorate, they will turn yellowish.
When i was in primary school, these were all over the play field back in the 80s after it rains, we use to pick them up and stone each other with it lol. Its plentiful in Jamaica

On your opening theme (Love your theme) when you say “try some food you’ve never tried before” I use to hunt those mushrooms with an old girlfriend but could never find them. We live in Carter County Kentucky. When is the best time to hunt those mushrooms
I always notice them starting around the middle of September
Nature is just overwhelming sometimes. The older I get the more amazed I am by the sheer diversity of life. And we get hung up on a few races and cultures? It's laughable and sad at the same time.
These grow in my backyard every summer
Unfortunately the slugs got to them by the time I learned what they are.
How exactly would I know if a mushroom is poison or no?
By educating yourself, reading, observing, talking with experts, looking up websites dedicated to mushroom ID.
NGL I thought Mel Gibson was out in the woods teaching us about mushrooms
I would never be able to eat a wild mushroom. Maybe with the exception of a morel... Just the thought of mushroom poisoning...

Why is there no date on this video??
Does the texture inside stay the same once cooked?
The texture is the same. Inside and out.
They remind me of angel food cake
Wild Mushroom is way better than cultured. But never seen this thing in the Philippines.
the puffballs look like huge marshmallows
You can also grill them, like a big piece of meat. 🥩
One of our favorite mushrooms
It looks like a mozzarella cheese ball
Where's your other hand???!!!!!
